Technological implementation of a photonic Bier-Glass cavity

In this paper, we introduce a novel quantum photonic device, which we term photonic Bier-Glass cavity. We discuss its fabrication and functionality, which is based on the coupling of integrated In(Ga)As quantum dots to a broadband photonic cavity resonance. By design, the device architecture uniquely combines the Purcell enhancement of a photonic micropillar structure with broadband photonic mode shaping of a vertical, tapered waveguide, making it an interesting candidate to enable the efficient extraction of entangled photon pairs. We detail the epitaxial growth of the heterostructure and the necessary lithography steps to approach a GaAs-based photonic device with a height exceeding 15 $μ$m, supported on a pedestal that can be as thin as 20 nm. We present an optical characterization, which confirms the presence of broadband optical resonances, in conjunction with amplified spontaneous emission of single photons.

Three-Body Non-Leptonic Heavy-to-heavy $B$ Decays at NNLO in QCD

Exclusive non-leptonic two-body decays of $B$ mesons have been studied extensively in the past two decades within the framework of factorization. However, the exploration of the corresponding three-body case has only started recently, in part motivated by new data. We consider here the simplest non-leptonic three-body $B$ decays from the point of view of factorization, namely heavy-to-heavy transitions. We provide a careful derivation of the SCET/QCDF factorized amplitudes to NNLO in $α_s$, and discuss the numerical impact of NLO and NNLO corrections. We then study the narrow-width limit, showing that the three-body amplitude reproduces analytically the known quasi-two-body decay amplitudes, and compute finite-width corrections. Finally, we discuss certain observables that are sensitive to perturbative NLO and NNLO corrections and to higher Gegenbauer moments of the dimeson LCDAs. This is the first study of non-leptonic three-body $B$ decays to NNLO in QCD.

Local and Global Explanations of Agent Behavior: Integrating Strategy Summaries with Saliency Maps

With advances in reinforcement learning (RL), agents are now being developed in high-stakes application domains such as healthcare and transportation. Explaining the behavior of these agents is challenging, as the environments in which they act have large state spaces, and their decision-making can be affected by delayed rewards, making it difficult to analyze their behavior. To address this problem, several approaches have been developed. Some approaches attempt to convey the $\textit{global}$ behavior of the agent, describing the actions it takes in different states. Other approaches devised $\textit{local}$ explanations which provide information regarding the agent's decision-making in a particular state. In this paper, we combine global and local explanation methods, and evaluate their joint and separate contributions, providing (to the best of our knowledge) the first user study of combined local and global explanations for RL agents. Specifically, we augment strategy summaries that extract important trajectories of states from simulations of the agent with saliency maps which show what information the agent attends to. Our results show that the choice of what states to include in the summary (global information) strongly affects people's understanding of agents: participants shown summaries that included important states significantly outperformed participants who were presented with agent behavior in a randomly set of chosen world-states. We find mixed results with respect to augmenting demonstrations with saliency maps (local information), as the addition of saliency maps did not significantly improve performance in most cases. However, we do find some evidence that saliency maps can help users better understand what information the agent relies on in its decision making, suggesting avenues for future work that can further improve explanations of RL agents.

Opto-Mechanical Tuning of the Polarization Properties of Micropillar Cavity Systems with embedded Quantum Dots

Strain tuning emerged as an appealing tool to tune fundamental optical properties of solid state quantum emitters. In particular, the wavelength and fine structure of quantum dot states could be tuned using hybrid semiconductor-piezoelectric devices. Here, we show how an applied external stress can directly impact the polarization properties of coupled InAs quantum dot-micropillar cavity systems. In our experiment, we find that we can reversibly tune the anisotropic polarization splitting of the fundamental microcavity mode by approximately 60 $μ\text{eV}$. We discuss the origin of this tuning mechanism, which arises from an interplay between elastic deformation and the photoelastic effect in our micropillar. Finally, we exploit this effect to tune the quantum dot polarization opto-mechanically via the polarization-anisotropic Purcell effect. Our work paves the way for optomechanical and reversible tuning of the polarization and spin properties of light-matter coupled solid state systems.

Two-loop non-leptonic penguin amplitude in QCD factorization

We complete the calculation of the QCD penguin amplitude at next-to-next-to-leading order in the QCD factorization approach to non-leptonic B-meson decays. This provides the last missing piece in the computation of the QCD correction to direct CP asymmetries at leading power in the heavy-quark expansion.

The Four-Loop Cusp Anomalous Dimension from the $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Sudakov Form Factor

We present an analytic derivation of the full four-loop cusp anomalous dimension of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory from the Sudakov form factor. To extract the cusp anomalous dimension, we calculate the $ε^{-2}$ pole of the form factor using parametric integrations of finite integrals. We provide uniformly transcendental results for the master integrals through to weight six and confirm a very recent independent analytic result for the full four-loop cusp anomalous dimension of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ model.

Non-leptonic B-decays at two loops in QCD Factorization

We report on the calculation of the two-loop penguin amplitudes in non-leptonic B decays in the framework of QCD factorization. We discuss the computation of this genuine two-loop, two-scale problem and provide details on the matching from QCD onto SCET, the evaluation of the master integrals, and the convolution of the hard scattering kernels with the light-cone distribution amplitude of the light meson. Preliminary results on the size of the two-loop correction are given.

Completing the four-body contributions to $\bar{B}\rightarrow X_s γ$ at NLO

We report on the status of the ongoing calculation of multiparticle contributions to the inclusive radiative $\bar{B} \rightarrow X_s γ$ decay at next-to leading order. This effort amounts to the evaluation of the four-particle process $b\rightarrow s \bar{q} q γ$ at the one-loop level, supplemented by the corresponding five-particle tree-level cuts $b\rightarrow s \bar{q} q γ+ g$ of the gluon bremsstrahlung. Knowledge of these pieces will formally complete the $\bar{B} \rightarrow X_s γ$ decay at the next-to-leading order. The different steps such as the generation of the amplitude, its renormalization, and the treatment of occurring IR-divergences are discussed. Moreover, we elaborate on the subtleties that arise when treating $γ_5$ in $D$ dimensions.

Filter-free single-photon quantum dot resonance fluorescence in an integrated cavity-waveguide device

Semiconductor quantum dots embedded in micro-pillar cavities are excellent emitters of single photons when pumped resonantly. Often, the same spatial mode is used to both resonantly excite a quantum dot and to collect the emitted single photons, requiring cross-polarization to reduce the uncoupled scattered laser light. This inherently reduces the source brightness to 50 %. Critically, for some quantum applications the total efficiency from generation to detection must be over 50 %. Here, we demonstrate a resonant-excitation approach to creating single photons that is free of any cross-polarization, and in fact any filtering whatsoever. It potentially increases single-photon rates and collection efficiencies, and simplifies operation. This integrated device allows us to resonantly excite single quantum-dot states in several cavities in the plane of the device using connected waveguides, while the cavity-enhanced single-photon fluorescence is directed vertical (off-chip) in a Gaussian mode. We expect this design to be a prototype for larger chip-scale quantum photonics.

Long distance effects in inclusive rare $B$ decays and phenomenology of $\bar{B}\to X_d \ell^+\ell^-$

Rare inclusive $B$ decays such as $\bar{B}\to X_{s(d)} \ell^+\ell^-$ are interesting probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. Due to the complementarity to their exclusive counterparts, they might shed light on the anomalies currently seen in exclusive $b \to s$ transitions. Distinguishing new-physics effects from the Standard Model requires precise predictions and necessitates the control of long distance effects. In the present work we revisit and improve the description of various long distance effects in inclusive decays such as charmonium and light-quark resonances, nonfactorisable power corrections, and cascade decays. We then apply these results to a state-of-the-art phenomenological study of $\bar{B}\to X_d \ell^+\ell^-$, including also logarithmically enhanced QED corrections and the recently calculated five-body contributions. To fully exploit the new-physics potential of inclusive flavour-changing neutral current decays, the $\bar{B}\to X_d \ell^+\ell^-$ observables should be measured in a dedicated Belle II analysis.

Observation of chiral photocurrent transport in the quantum Hall regime in graphene

Optical excitation provides a powerful tool to investigate non-equilibrium physics in quantum Hall systems. Moreover, the length scale associated with photo-excited charge carries lies between that of local probes and global transport measurements. Here, we investigate non-equilibrium physics of optically-excited charge carriers in graphene through photocurrent measurements in the integer quantum Hall regime. We observe that the photocurrent oscillates as a function of Fermi level, revealing the Landau-level quantization, and that the photocurrent oscillations are different for Fermi levels near and distant from the Dirac point. Our observation qualitatively agrees with a model that assumes the photocurrent is dominated by chiral edge transport of non-equilibrium carriers. Our experimental results are consistent with electron and hole chiralities being the same when the Fermi level is distant from the Dirac point, and opposite when near the Dirac point.

The Sudakov form factor at four loops in maximal super Yang-Mills theory

The four-loop Sudakov form factor in maximal super Yang-Mills theory is analysed in detail. It is shown explicitly how to construct a basis of integrals that have a uniformly transcendental expansion in the dimensional regularisation parameter, further elucidating the number-theoretic properties of Feynman integrals. The physical form factor is expressed in this basis for arbitrary colour factor. In the nonplanar sector the required integrals are integrated numerically using a mix of sector-decomposition and Mellin-Barnes representation methods. Both the cusp as well as the collinear anomalous dimension are computed. The results show explicitly the violation of quadratic Casimir scaling at the four-loop order. A thorough analysis concerning the reliability of reported numerical uncertainties is carried out.

Four-Loop Nonplanar Cusp Anomalous Dimension in N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

The light-like cusp anomalous dimension is a universal function that controls infrared divergences in quite general quantum field theories. In the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory this function is fixed fully by integrability to the three-loop order. At four loops a non-planar correction appears which we obtain for the first time from a numerical computation of the Sudakov form factor. Key ingredients are widely applicable methods to control the number-theoretic aspects of the appearing integrals. Our result shows explicitly that quadratic Casimir scaling breaks down at four loops.

Five-particle contributions to the inclusive rare $\bar B \to X_{s(d)} \, \ell^+\ell^-$ decays

We calculate tree-level contributions to the inclusive rare $\bar B \to X_{s(d)} \, \ell^+\ell^-$ decays. At the partonic level they stem from the five-particle process $b \to s(d) \, q \bar q \, \ell^+\ell^-$, with $q \in \{u,d,s\}$. While for $b \to d$ transitions such five-body final states contribute at the same order in the Wolfenstein expansion compared to the three-body partonic decay, they are CKM suppressed in $b \to s$ decays. In the perturbative expansion, we include all leading-order contributions, as well as partial next-to-leading order QCD and QED effects. In the case of the differential branching ratio, we present all results completely analytically in terms of polylogarithmic functions of at most weight three. We also consider the differential forward-backward asymmetry, where all except one interference could be obtained analytically. From a phenomenological point of view the newly calculated contributions are at the percent level or below.

Are Bitcoin Bubbles Predictable? Combining a Generalized Metcalfe's Law and the LPPLS Model

We develop a strong diagnostic for bubbles and crashes in bitcoin, by analyzing the coincidence (and its absence) of fundamental and technical indicators. Using a generalized Metcalfe's law based on network properties, a fundamental value is quantified and shown to be heavily exceeded, on at least four occasions, by bubbles that grow and burst. In these bubbles, we detect a universal super-exponential unsustainable growth. We model this universal pattern with the Log-Periodic Power Law Singularity (LPPLS) model, which parsimoniously captures diverse positive feedback phenomena, such as herding and imitation. The LPPLS model is shown to provide an ex-ante warning of market instabilities, quantifying a high crash hazard and probabilistic bracket of the crash time consistent with the actual corrections; although, as always, the precise time and trigger (which straw breaks the camel's back) being exogenous and unpredictable. Looking forward, our analysis identifies a substantial but not unprecedented overvaluation in the price of bitcoin, suggesting many months of volatile sideways bitcoin prices ahead (from the time of writing, March 2018).

The nonplanar cusp and collinear anomalous dimension at four loops in ${\mathcal N} = 4$ SYM theory

We present numerical results for the nonplanar lightlike cusp and collinear anomalous dimension at four loops in ${\mathcal N} = 4$ SYM theory, which we infer from a calculation of the Sudakov form factor. The latter is expressed as a rational linear combination of uniformly transcendental integrals for arbitrary colour factor. Numerical integration in the nonplanar sector reveals explicitly the breakdown of quadratic Casimir scaling at the four-loop order. A thorough analysis of the reported numerical uncertainties is carried out.

A solid state source of photon triplets based on quantum dot molecules

Producing advanced quantum states of light is a priority in quantum information technologies. While remarkable progress has been made on single photons and photon pairs, multipartite correlated photon states are usually produced in purely optical systems by post-selection or cascading, with extremely low efficiency and exponentially poor scaling. Multipartite states enable improved tests of the foundations of quantum mechanics as well as implementations of complex quantum optical networks and protocols. It would be favorable to directly generate these states using solid state systems, for better scaling, simpler handling, and the promise of reversible transfer of quantum information between stationary and flying qubits. Here we use the ground states of two optically active coupled quantum dots to directly produce photon triplets. The wavefunctions of photogenerated excitons localized in these ground states are correlated via molecular hybridization and Coulomb interactions. The formation of a triexciton leads to a triple cascade recombination and sequential emission of three photons with strong correlations. The quantum dot molecule is embedded in an epitaxially grown nanowire engineered for single-mode waveguiding and improved extraction efficiency at the emission wavelength. We record 65.62 photon triplets per minute, surpassing rates of all earlier reported sources, in spite of the moderate efficiency of our detectors. Our structure and data represent a breakthrough towards implementing multipartite photon entanglement and multi-qubit readout schemes in solid state devices, suitable for integrated quantum information processing.

Interfacing a quantum dot with a spontaneous parametric down-conversion source

Quantum networks require interfacing stationary and flying qubits. These flying qubits are usually nonclassical states of light. Here we consider two of the leading source technologies for nonclassical light, spontaneous parametric down-conversion and single semiconductor quantum dots. Down-conversion delivers high-grade entangled photon pairs, whereas quantum dots excel at producing single photons. We report on an experiment that joins these two technologies and investigates the conditions under which optimal interference between these dissimilar light sources may be achieved.
