Deterministic Photon Pairs via Coherent Optical Control of a Single Quantum Dot

The strong confinement of semiconductor excitons in a quantum dot gives rise to atom-like behavior. The full benefit of such a structure is best observed in resonant excitation where the excited state can be deterministically populated and coherently manipulated. Due to large refractive index and device geometry it remains challenging to observe resonantly excited emission that is free from laser scattering in III/V self-assembled quantum dots. Here we exploit the biexciton binding energy to create an extremely clean single photon source via two-photon resonant excitation of an InAs/GaAs quantum dot. We observe complete suppression of the excitation laser and multi-photon emissions. Additionally, we perform full coherent control of the ground-biexciton state qubit and observe an extended coherence time using an all-optical echo technique. The deterministic coherent photon pair creation makes this system suitable for the generation of time-bin entanglement and experiments on the interaction of photons from dissimilar sources.

The Sudakov form factor to three loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills

We review the results for the Sudakov form factor in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory up to the three-loop level. At each loop order, the form factor is expressed as a linear combination of only a handful scalar integrals, with small integer coefficients. Working in dimensional regularisation, the expansion coefficients of each integral exhibit homogeneous transcendentality in the Riemann zeta-function. We find that the logarithm of the form factor reproduces the correct values of the cusp and collinear anomalous dimensions. Moreover, the form factor in N=4 super Yang-Mills can be related to the leading transcendentality pieces of the QCD quark and gluon form factor. Finally, we comment briefly on the ultraviolet properties of the N=4 form factor in D>4 dimensions.

The three-loop form factor in N=4 super Yang-Mills

In this paper we study the Sudakov form factor in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory to the three-loop order. The latter is expressed in terms of planar and non-planar loop integrals. We show that it is possible to choose a representation in which each loop integral has uniform transcendentality. We verify analytically the expected exponentiation of the infrared divergences with the correct values of the three-loop cusp and collinear anomalous dimensions in dimensional regularisation. We find that the form factor in N=4 super Yang-Mills can be related to the leading transcendentality part of the quark and gluon form factors in QCD. We also study the ultraviolet properties of the form factor in D>4 dimensions, and find unexpected cancellations, resulting in an improved ultraviolet behaviour.

Logarithmically Enhanced Corrections to the Decay Rate and Forward Backward Asymmetry in anti-B --> X(s) l+ l-

We study logarithmically enhanced electromagnetic corrections to the decay rate in the high dilepton invariant mass region as well as corrections to the forward backward asymmetry (FBA) of the inclusive rare decay $\bar{B} \to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$. As expected, the relative effect of these corrections in the high dilepton mass region is around -8% for the muonic final state and therefore much larger than in the low dilepton mass region. We also present a complete phenomenological analysis, to improved NNLO accuracy, of the dilepton mass spectrum and the FBA integrated in the low dilepton mass region, including a new approach to the zero of the FBA. The latter represents one of the most precise predictions in flavour physics with a theoretical uncertainty of order 5%. We find $(q_0^2)_{μμ} = (3.50 \pm 0.12) \gev^2$. For the high dilepton invariant mass region, we have ${\cal B}(\bar B\to X_sμμ)_{\rm high} = (2.40^{+0.69}_{-0.62}) \times 10^{-7}$. The dominant uncertainty is due to the $1/m_b$ corrections and can be significantly reduced in the future. For the low dilepton invariant mass region, we confirm previous results up to small corrections.

Long distance effects and strangeness in the nucleon

We discuss the calculation of the strange magnetic radius of the proton in chiral perturbation theory. In particular we investigate the low energy component of the loop integrals involving kaons. We separate the chiral calculation into a low energy part and a high energy component through use of a momentum space separation scale. This separation shows that most of the chiral calculation comes from high energies where the effective field theory treatment is not valid. The resulting low energy prediction is in better agreement with dispersive treatments. Finally, we briefly discuss magnetic moments and show how our techniques can help resolve an old puzzle in understanding the magnetic moments of the proton and Sigma^+.
