Phenomenology of inclusive $\bar{B}\to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ for the Belle II era

With the first data being recorded at Belle II, we are at the brink of a new era in quark flavour physics. The many exciting new opportunities for Belle~II include a full angular analysis of inclusive ${\bar B \to X_{s} \, \ell^+\ell^-}$ which has the potential to reveal new physics, in particular by its interplay with the exclusive $b \to s \ell^+\ell^-$ counterparts studied extensively at LHCb. In this paper, we present fully updated Standard Model predictions for all angular observables necessary for this endeavour. These predictions are tailored to Belle II and include an elaborate study of the treatment of collinear photons which become crucial when aiming for the highest precision. In addition, we present a phenomenological study of the potential for Belle II to reveal possible new physics in the inclusive decay channel, both in an independent manner and in combination with exclusive modes.

Singularities of invariant densities for random switching between two linear ODEs in 2D

We consider a planar dynamical system generated by two stable linear vector fields with distinct fixed points and random switching between them. We characterize singularities of the invariant density in terms of the switching rates and contraction rates. We prove boundedness away from those singularities. We also discuss some motivating biological examples.

Long distance effects in inclusive rare $B$ decays and phenomenology of $\bar{B}\to X_d \ell^+\ell^-$

Rare inclusive $B$ decays such as $\bar{B}\to X_{s(d)} \ell^+\ell^-$ are interesting probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. Due to the complementarity to their exclusive counterparts, they might shed light on the anomalies currently seen in exclusive $b \to s$ transitions. Distinguishing new-physics effects from the Standard Model requires precise predictions and necessitates the control of long distance effects. In the present work we revisit and improve the description of various long distance effects in inclusive decays such as charmonium and light-quark resonances, nonfactorisable power corrections, and cascade decays. We then apply these results to a state-of-the-art phenomenological study of $\bar{B}\to X_d \ell^+\ell^-$, including also logarithmically enhanced QED corrections and the recently calculated five-body contributions. To fully exploit the new-physics potential of inclusive flavour-changing neutral current decays, the $\bar{B}\to X_d \ell^+\ell^-$ observables should be measured in a dedicated Belle II analysis.

Matching for FCNC effects in the flavour-symmetric SMEFT

We calculate the complete tree and one-loop matching of the dimension 6 Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with unbroken $U(3)^5$ flavour symmetry to the operators of the Weak Effective Theory (WET) which are responsible for flavour changing neutral current effects among down-type quarks. We also explicitly calculate the effects of SMEFT corrections to input observables on the WET Wilson coefficients, a necessary step on the way to a well-defined, complete prediction. These results will enable high-precision flavour data to be incorporated into global fits of the SMEFT at high energies, where the flavour symmetry assumption is widespread.

Random Switching near Bifurcations

The interplay between bifurcations and random switching processes of vector fields is studied. More precisely, we provide a classification of piecewise deterministic Markov processes arising from stochastic switching dynamics near fold, Hopf, transcritical and pitchfork bifurcations. We prove the existence of invariant measures for different switching rates. We also study, when the invariant measures are unique, when multiple measures occur, when measures have smooth densities, and under which conditions finite-time blow-up occurs. We demonstrate the applicability of our results for three nonlinear models arising in applications.

Invariant densities for dynamical systems with random switching

We consider a non-autonomous ordinary differential equation on a smooth manifold, with right-hand side that randomly switches between the elements of a finite family of smooth vector fields. For the resulting random dynamical system, we show that Hörmander type hypoellipticity conditions are sufficient for uniqueness and absolute continuity of an invariant measure.

A user-friendly condition for exponential ergodicity in randomly switched environments

We consider random switching between finitely many vector fields leaving positively invariant a compact set. Recently, Li, Liu and Cui showed that if one the vector fields has a globally asymptotically stable (G.A.S.) equilibrium from which one can reach a point satisfying a weak Hörmander-bracket condition, then the process converges in total variation to a unique invariant probability measure. In this note, adapting the proof of Li, Liu and Cui and using results of Benaïm, Le Borgne, Malrieu and Zitt, the assumption of a G.A.S. equilibrium is weakened to the existence of an accessible point at which a barycentric combination of the vector fields vanishes. Some examples are given which demonstrate the usefulness of this condition.

Smooth invariant densities for random switching on the torus

We consider a random dynamical system obtained by switching between the flows generated by two smooth vector fields on the 2d-torus, with the random switchings happening according to a Poisson process. Assuming that the driving vector fields are transversal to each other at all points of the torus and that each of them allows for a smooth invariant density and no periodic orbits, we prove that the switched system also has a smooth invariant density, for every switching rate. Our approach is based on an integration by parts formula inspired by techniques from Malliavin calculus.

Resolved Power Corrections to the Inclusive Decay $\bar B \to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$

We identify the correct power counting of all the variables in the low-$q^2$ window of the inclusive decay $\bar B \to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ within the effective theory SCET if a hadronic mass cut is imposed. Furthermore we analyse the resolved power corrections at the order $1/m_b$ in a systematic way. As a special feature, the resolved contributions stay nonlocal when the hadronic mass cut is released. Therefore they represent an irreducible uncertainty independent of the hadronic mass cut.

Subleading Power Factorization in $\bar B \to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$

We analyze the factorization to subleading power in the flavor changing neutral current process $\bar B\to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$. In particular, we compute the so-called resolved contributions and explore the numerical impact on observables. In these contributions the virtual photon couples to light partons instead of connecting directly to the effective weak-interaction vertex. They represent an irreducible uncertainty in the inclusive $\bar B \to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ decay which cannot be removed by relaxing the experimentally necessary cuts in the hadronic mass spectrum.

Flavour, Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Dark Matter: state of the art and future prospects

With the discovery of the Higgs boson the Standard Model has become a complete and comprehensive theory, which has been verified with unparalleled precision and in principle might be valid at all scales. However, several reasons remain why we firmly believe that there should be physics beyond the Standard Model. Experiments such as the LHC, new $B$ factories, and earth- and space-based astro-particle experiments provide us with unique opportunities to discover a coherent framework for many of the long-standing puzzles of our field. Here we explore several significant interconnections between the physics of the Higgs boson, the physics of flavour, and the experimental clues we have about dark matter.

Inclusive B -> X_s l^+ l^-: Complete angular analysis and a thorough study of collinear photons

We investigate logarithmically enhanced electromagnetic corrections of all angular observables in inclusive B -> X_s l^+ l^-. We present analytical results, which are supplemented by a dedicated Monte Carlo study on the treatment of collinear photons in order to determine the size of the electromagnetic logarithms. We then give the Standard Model predictions of all observables, considering all available NNLO QCD, NLO QED and power corrections, and investigate their sensitivity to New Physics. Since the structure of the double differential decay rate is modified in the presence of QED corrections, we also propose new observables which vanish if only QCD corrections are taken into account. Moreover, we study the experimental sensitivity to these new observables at Belle II.

Optimizing the basis of B->K*ll observables in the full kinematic range

We discuss the observables for the B->K*(->K pi)ll decay, focusing on both CP-averaged and CP-violating observables at large and low hadronic recoil with special emphasis on their low sensitivity to form-factor uncertainties. We identify an optimal basis of observables that balances theoretical and experimental advantages, which will guide the New Physics searches in the short term. We discuss some advantages of the observables in the basis, and in particular their improved sensitivity to New Physics compared to other observables. We present predictions within the Standard Model for the observables of interest, integrated over the appropriate bins including lepton mass corrections. Finally, we present bounds on the S-wave contribution to the distribution coming from the B->K_0*ll decay, which will help to establish the systematic error associated to this pollution.

B ->K*ll: The New Frontier of New Physics searches in Flavor

The exclusive decay mode B ->K*ll has become one of the key players in the search for New Physics in flavor. An increasing number of observables are being studied experimentally, and with increasing precision. Its theoretical description is well under control, and an interesting set of clean observables have been identified, reducing further the theoretical uncertainties. Model-independent analyses show that in the near future this mode will either reveal NP through a pattern of correlated deviations from the SM, or pose very stringent constraints on radiative and semileptonic operators.
