Ground-state stability and excitation spectrum of a one-dimensional dipolar supersolid

We study the behavior of the excitation spectrum across the quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a supersolid phase of a dipolar Bose gas confined to a one-dimensional geometry. Including the leading beyond-mean-field effects within an effective Hamiltonian, the analysis is based on Bogoliubov theory with several order parameters accounting for the superfluid as well as solid structure. We find fast convergence of the ground-state energy in the supersolid with the number of order parameters and demonstrate a stable excitation spectrum with two Goldstone modes and an amplitude mode in the low-energy regime. Our results suggest that there exists an experimentally achievable parameter regime for dysprosium atoms, where the supersolid phase exhibits a stable excitation spectrum in the thermodynamic limit and the transition into the supersolid phase is of second order driven by the roton instability.

Quantum fluctuations in one-dimensional supersolids

In one-dimension, quantum fluctuations prevent the appearance of long-range order in a supersolid, and only quasi long-range order can survive. We derive this quantum critical behavior and study its influence on the superfluid response and properties of the solid. The analysis is based on an effective low-energy description accounting for the two coupled Goldstone modes. We find that the quantum phase transition from the superfluid to the supersolid is shifted by quantum fluctuations from its mean-field prediction. However, for current experimental parameters with dipolar atomic gases, this shift is not observable and the transition appears to be mean-field like.

Dimensional crossover for the beyond-mean-field correction in Bose gases

We present a detailed beyond-mean-field analysis of a weakly interacting Bose gas in the crossover from three to low dimensions. We find an analytical solution for the energy and provide a clear qualitative picture of the crossover in the case of a box potential with periodic boundary conditions. We show that the leading contribution of the confinement-induced resonance is of beyond-mean-field order and calculate the leading corrections in the three- and low-dimensional limits. We also characterize the crossover for harmonic potentials in a model system with particularly chosen short- and long-range interactions and show the limitations of the local-density approximation. Our analysis is applicable to Bose-Bose mixtures and gives a starting point for developing the beyond-mean-field theory in inhomogeneous systems with long-range interactions such as dipolar particles or Rydberg-dressed atoms.

Dynamics of Solitons in the One-Dimensional Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We investigate bright solitons in the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation in the framework of an extended variational approach. We apply the latter to the stationary ground state of the system as well as to coherent collisions between two or more solitons. Using coupled Gaussian trial wave functions, we demonstrate that the variational approach is a powerful method to calculate the soliton dynamics. This method has the advantage that it is computationally faster compared to numerically exact grid calculations. In addition, it goes far beyond the capability of analytical ground state solutions, because the variational approach provides the ability to treat excited solitons as well as dynamical interactions between different wave packets. To demonstrate the power of the variational approach, we calculate the stationary ground state of the soliton and compare it with the analytical solution showing the convergence to the exact solution. Furthermore, we extend our calculations to nonstationary solitons by investigating the breathing oscillations of excited solitons and the coherent collisions of several wave packets in both the low- and high-energy regime. Comparisons of the variational approach with numerically exact simulations on grids reveal excellent agreement in the high-energy regime while deviations can be observed for low energies.
