Abundance of mode-locking for quasiperiodically forced circle maps

We study the phenomenon of mode-locking in the context of quasiperiodically forced non-linear circle maps. As a main result, we show that under certain C1-open condition on the geometry of twist parameter families of such systems, the closure of the union of modelocking plateaus has positive measure. In particular, this implies the existence of infinitely many mode-locking plateaus (open Arnold tongues). The proof builds on multiscale analysis and parameter exclusion methods in the spirit of Benedicks and Carleson, which were previously developed for quasiperiodic SL(2,R)-cocycles by Young and Bjerklöv. The methods apply to a variety of examples, including a forced version of the classical Arnold circle map.

Non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations II: dimensions of strange attractors

We study the geometric and topological properties of strange non-chaotic attractors created in non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations of quasiperiodically forced interval maps. By interpreting the attractors as limit objects of the iterates of a continuous curve and controlling the geometry of the latter, we determine their Hausdorff and box-counting dimension and show that these take distinct values. Moreover, the same approach allows to describe the topological structure of the attractors and to prove their minimality.

Rotation sets and almost periodic sequences

We study the rotational behaviour on minimal sets of torus homeomorphisms and show that the associated rotation sets can be any type of line segments as well as non-convex and even plane-separating continua. This shows that restrictions holding for rotation sets on the whole torus are not valid on minimal sets. The proof uses a construction of rotational horseshoes by Kwapisz to transfer the problem to a symbolic level, where the desired rotational behaviour is implemented by means of suitable irregular Toeplitz sequences.

On Torus Homeomorphisms Semiconjugate to irrational Rotations

In the context of the Franks-Misiurewicz Conjecture, we study homeomorphisms of the two-torus semiconjugate to an irrational rotation of the circle. As a special case, this conjecture asserts uniqueness of the rotation vector in this class of systems. We first characterise these maps by the existence of an invariant foliation by essential annular continua (essential subcontinua of the torus whose complement is an open annulus) which are permuted with irrational combinatorics. This result places the considered class close to skew products over irrational rotations. Generalising a well-known result of M. Herman on forced circle homeomorphisms, we provide a criterion, in terms of topological properties of the annular continua, for the uniqueness of the rotation vector. As a byproduct, we obtain a simple proof for the uniqueness of the rotation vector on decomposable invariant annular continua with empty interior. In addition, we collect a number of observations on the topology and rotation intervals of invariant annular continua with empty interior.

A model for the nonautonomous Hopf bifurcation

Inspired by an example of Grebogi et al [1], we study a class of model systems which exhibit the full two-step scenario for the nonautonomous Hopf bifurcation, as proposed by Arnold [2]. The specific structure of these models allows a rigorous and thorough analysis of the bifurcation pattern. In particular, we show the existence of an invariant 'generalised torus' splitting off a previously stable central manifold after the second bifurcation point. The scenario is described in two different settings. First, we consider deterministically forced models, which can be treated as continuous skew product systems on a compact product space. Secondly, we treat randomly forced systems, which lead to skew products over a measure-preserving base transformation. In the random case, a semiuniform ergodic theorem for random dynamical systems is required, to make up for the lack of compactness.

Random minimality and continuity of invariant graphs in random dynamical systems

We study dynamical systems forced by a combination of random and deterministic noise and provide criteria, in terms of Lyapunov exponents, for the existence of random attractors with continuous structure in the fibres. For this purpose, we provide suitable random versions of the semiuniform ergodic theorem and also introduce and discuss some basic concepts of random topological dynamics.

A construction of almost automorphic minimal sets

We describe a general procedure to construct topological extensions of given skew product maps with one-dimensional fibres, by blowing up a countable number of single points to vertical segments. This allows to produce various examples of unusual dynamics, including almost automorphic minimal sets of almost periodically forced systems, point-distal but non-distal homeomorpisms of the torus (as first constructed by Rees) or minimal sets of quasiperiodically forced interval maps which are not filled-in.

Almost periodic structures and the semiconjugacy problem

The description of almost periodic or quasiperiodic structures has a long tradition in mathematical physics, in particular since the discovery of quasicrystals in the early 80's. Frequently, the modelling of such structures leads to different types of dynamical systems which include, depending on the concept of quasiperiodicity being considered, skew products over quasiperiodic or almost-periodic base flows, mathematical quasicrystals or maps of the real line with almost-periodic displacement. An important problem in this context is to know whether the considered system is semiconjugate to a rigid translation. We solve this question in a general setting that includes all the above-mentioned examples and also allows to treat scalar differential equations that are almost-periodic both in space and time. To that end, we study a certain class of flows that preserve a one-dimensional foliation and show that a semiconjugacy to a minimal translation flow exists if and only if a boundedness condition, concerning the distance of orbits of the flow to those of the translation, holds.

Nonautonomous saddle-node bifurcations: random and deterministic forcing

We study the effect of external forcing on the saddle-node bifurcation pattern of interval maps. By replacing fixed points of unperturbed maps by invariant graphs, we obtain direct analogues to the classical result both for random forcing by measure-preserving dynamical systems and for deterministic forcing by homeomorphisms of compact metric spaces. Additional assumptions like ergodicity or minimality of the forcing process then yield further information about the dynamics. The main difference to the unforced situation is that at the critical bifurcation parameter, two alternatives exist. In addition to the possibility of a unique neutral invariant graph, corresponding to a neutral fixed point, a pair of so-called pinched invariant graphs may occur. In quasiperiodically forced systems, these are often referred to as 'strange non-chaotic attractors'. The results on deterministic forcing can be considered as an extension of the work of Novo, Nunez, Obaya and Sanz on nonautonomous convex scalar differential equations. As a by-product, we also give a generalisation of a result by Sturman and Stark on the structure of minimal sets in forced systems.
