Channels that Heat Up

This work considers an additive noise channel where the time-k noise variance is a weighted sum of the channel input powers prior to time k. This channel is motivated by point-to-point communication between two terminals that are embedded in the same chip. Transmission heats up the entire chip and hence increases the thermal noise at the receiver. The capacity of this channel (both with and without feedback) is studied at low transmit powers and at high transmit powers. At low transmit powers, the slope of the capacity-vs-power curve at zero is computed and it is shown that the heating-up effect is beneficial. At high transmit powers, conditions are determined under which the capacity is bounded, i.e., under which the capacity does not grow to infinity as the allowed average power tends to infinity.

On Multipath Fading Channels at High SNR

This paper studies the capacity of discrete-time multipath fading channels. It is assumed that the number of paths is finite, i.e., that the channel output is influenced by the present and by the L previous channel inputs. A noncoherent channel model is considered where neither transmitter nor receiver are cognizant of the fading's realization, but both are aware of its statistic. The focus is on capacity at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). In particular, the capacity pre-loglog - defined as the limiting ratio of the capacity to loglog SNR as SNR tends to infinity - is studied. It is shown that, irrespective of the number paths L, the capacity pre-loglog is 1.

Gaussian Fading is the Worst Fading

The capacity of peak-power limited, single-antenna, non-coherent, flat-fading channels with memory is considered. The emphasis is on the capacity pre-log, i.e., on the limiting ratio of channel capacity to the logarithm of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), as the SNR tends to infinity. It is shown that, among all stationary and ergodic fading processes of a given spectral distribution function whose law has no mass point at zero, the Gaussian process gives rise to the smallest pre-log.

Multipath Channels of Bounded Capacity

The capacity of discrete-time, non-coherent, multipath fading channels is considered. It is shown that if the delay spread is large in the sense that the variances of the path gains do not decay faster than geometrically, then capacity is bounded in the signal-to-noise ratio.

Strong dipolar effects in a quantum ferrofluid

We report on the realization of a Chromium Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with strong dipolar interaction. By using a Feshbach resonance, we reduce the usual isotropic contact interaction, such that the anisotropic magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between 52Cr atoms becomes comparable in strength. This induces a change of the aspect ratio of the cloud, and, for strong dipolar interaction, the inversion of ellipticity during expansion - the usual "smoking gun" evidence for BEC - can even be suppressed. These effects are accounted for by taking into account the dipolar interaction in the superfluid hydrodynamic equations governing the dynamics of the gas, in the same way as classical ferrofluids can be described by including dipolar terms in the classical hydrodynamic equations. Our results are a first step in the exploration of the unique properties of quantum ferrofluids.

A Hot Channel

This paper studies on-chip communication with non-ideal heat sinks. A channel model is proposed where the variance of the additive noise depends on the weighted sum of the past channel input powers. It is shown that, depending on the weights, the capacity can be either bounded or unbounded in the input power. A necessary condition and a sufficient condition for the capacity to be bounded are presented.

A Channel that Heats Up

Motivated by on-chip communication, a channel model is proposed where the variance of the additive noise depends on the weighted sum of the past channel input powers. For this channel, an expression for the capacity per unit cost is derived, and it is shown that the expression holds also in the presence of feedback.

Comparing contact and dipolar interaction in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We have measured the relative strength $ε_dd$ of the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction compared to the contact interaction in a chromium Bose-Einstein condensate. We analyze the asymptotic velocities of expansion of a dipolar chromium BEC with different orientations of the atomic magnetic dipole moments. By comparing them with numerical solutions of the hydrodynamic equations for dipolar condensates, we are able to determine $ε_dd = 0.159\pm0.034$ with high accuracy. Since the absolute strength of the dipole-dipole interaction is known exactly, the relative strength of the dipoledipole interaction can be used to determine the s-wave scattering length $a = 5.08\pm1.06\cdot10^-9 m = 96\pm20 a0$ of 52Cr. This is fully consistent with our previous measurements on the basis of Feshbach resonances.
