Extremes and Recurrence in Dynamical Systems

This book provides a comprehensive introduction for the study of extreme events in the context of dynamical systems. The introduction provides a broad overview of the interdisciplinary research area of extreme events, underlining its relevance for mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, and social sciences. After exploring the basics of the classical theory of extreme events, the book presents a careful examination of how a dynamical system can serve as a generator of stochastic processes, and explores in detail the relationship between the hitting and return time statistics of a dynamical system and the possibility of constructing extreme value laws for given observables. Explicit derivation of extreme value laws are then provided for selected dynamical systems. The book then discusses how extreme events can be used as probes for inferring fundamental dynamical and geometrical properties of a dynamical system and for providing a novel point of view in problems of physical and geophysical relevance. A final summary of the main results is then presented along with a discussion of open research questions. Finally, an appendix with software in Matlab programming language allows the readers to develop further understanding of the presented concepts.

Approximation of a free Poisson process by systems of freely independent particles

Let $σ$ be a non-atomic, infinite Radon measure on $\mathbb R^d$, for example, $dσ(x)=z\,dx$ where $z>0$. We consider a system of freely independent particles $x_1,\dots,x_N$ in a bounded set $Λ\subset\mathbb R^d$, where each particle $x_i$ has distribution $\frac1{σ(Λ)}\,σ$ on $Λ$ and the number of particles, $N$, is random and has Poisson distribution with parameter $σ(Λ)$. If the particles were classically independent rather than freely independent, this particle system would be the restriction to $Λ$ of the Poisson point process on $\mathbb R^d$ with intensity measure $σ$. In the case of free independence, this particle system is not the restriction of the free Poisson process on $\mathbb R^d$ with intensity measure $σ$. Nevertheless, we prove that this is true in an approximative sense: if bounded sets $Λ^{(n)}$ ($n\in\mathbb N$) are such that $Λ^{(1)}\subsetΛ^{(2)}\subsetΛ^{(3)}\subset\dotsm$ and $\bigcup_{n=1}^\infty Λ^{(n)}=\mathbb R^d$, then the corresponding particle system in $Λ^{(n)}$ converges (as $n\to\infty$) to the free Poisson process on $\mathbb R^d$ with intensity measure $σ$. We also prove the following $N/V$-limit: Let $N^{(n)}$ be a determinstic sequence of natural numbers such that $\lim_{n\to\infty}N^{(n)}/σ(Λ^{(n)})=1$. Then the system of $N^{(n)}$ freely independent particles in $Λ^{(n)}$ converges (as $n\to\infty$) to the free Poisson process. We finally extend these results to the case of a free Lévy white noise (in particular, a free Lévy process) without free Gaussian part.

A moment problem for random discrete measures

Let $X$ be a locally compact Polish space. A random measure on $X$ is a probability measure on the space of all (nonnegative) Radon measures on $X$. Denote by $\mathbb K(X)$ the cone of all Radon measures $η$ on $X$ which are of the form $η=\sum_{i}s_iδ_{x_i}$, where, for each $i$, $s_i>0$ and $δ_{x_i}$ is the Dirac measure at $x_i\in X$. A random discrete measure on $X$ is a probability measure on $\mathbb K(X)$. The main result of the paper states a necessary and sufficient condition (conditional upon a mild a priori bound) when a random measure $μ$ is also a random discrete measure. This condition is formulated solely in terms of moments of the random measure $μ$. Classical examples of random discrete measures are completely random measures and additive subordinators, however, the main result holds independently of any independence property. As a corollary, a characterisation via a moments is given when a random measure is a point process.

The full infinite dimensional moment problem on semi-algebraic sets of generalized functions

We consider a generic basic semi-algebraic subset $\mathcal{S}$ of the space of generalized functions, that is a set given by (not necessarily countably many) polynomial constraints. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for an infinite sequence of generalized functions to be realizable on $\mathcal{S}$, namely to be the moment sequence of a finite measure concentrated on $\mathcal{S}$. Our approach combines the classical results about the moment problem on nuclear spaces with the techniques recently developed to treat the moment problem on basic semi-algebraic sets of $\mathbb{R}^d$. In this way, we determine realizability conditions that can be more easily verified than the well-known Haviland type conditions. Our result completely characterizes the support of the realizing measure in terms of its moments. As concrete examples of semi-algebraic sets of generalized functions, we consider the set of all Radon measures and the set of all the measures having bounded Radon-Nikodym density w.r.t. the Lebesgue measure.

Towards a General Theory of Extremes for Observables of Chaotic Dynamical Systems

In this paper we provide a connection between the geometrical properties of a chaotic dynamical system and the distribution of extreme values. We show that the extremes of so-called physical observables are distributed according to the classical generalised Pareto distribution and derive explicit expressions for the scaling and the shape parameter. In particular, we derive that the shape parameter does not depend on the chosen observables, but only on the partial dimensions of the invariant measure on the stable, unstable, and neutral manifolds. The shape parameter is negative and is close to zero when high-dimensional systems are considered. This result agrees with what was derived recently using the generalized extreme value approach. Combining the results obtained using such physical observables and the properties of the extremes of distance observables, it is possible to derive estimates of the partial dimensions of the attractor along the stable and the unstable directions of the flow. Moreover, by writing the shape parameter in terms of moments of the extremes of the considered observable and by using linear response theory, we relate the sensitivity to perturbations of the shape parameter to the sensitivity of the moments, of the partial dimensions, and of the Kaplan-Yorke dimension of the attractor. Preliminary numerical investigations provide encouraging results on the applicability of the theory presented here. The results presented here do not apply for all combinations of Axiom A systems and observables, but the breakdown seems to be related to very special geometrical configurations.

Relevance of sampling schemes in light of Ruelle's linear response theory

We reconsider the theory of the linear response of non-equilibrium steady states to perturbations. We first show that by using a general functional decomposition for space-time dependent forcings, we can define elementary susceptibilities that allow to construct the response of the system to general perturbations. Starting from the definition of SRB measure, we then study the consequence of taking different sampling schemes for analysing the response of the system. We show that only a specific choice of the time horizon for evaluating the response of the system to a general time-dependent perturbation allows to obtain the formula first presented by Ruelle. We also discuss the special case of periodic perturbations, showing that when they are taken into consideration the sampling can be fine-tuned to make the definition of the correct time horizon immaterial. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results in terms of strategies for analyzing the outputs of numerical experiments by providing a critical review of a formula proposed by Reick.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for realizability of point processes

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a pair of (generalized) functions $ρ_1(\mathbf{r}_1)$ and $ρ_2(\mathbf{r}_1,\mathbf{r}_2)$, $\mathbf{r}_i\in X$, to be the density and pair correlations of some point process in a topological space $X$, for example, $\mathbb {R}^d$, $\mathbb {Z}^d$ or a subset of these. This is an infinite-dimensional version of the classical "truncated moment" problem. Standard techniques apply in the case in which there can be only a bounded number of points in any compact subset of $X$. Without this restriction we obtain, for compact $X$, strengthened conditions which are necessary and sufficient for the existence of a process satisfying a further requirement---the existence of a finite third order moment. We generalize the latter conditions in two distinct ways when $X$ is not compact.

A note on an integration by parts formula for the generators of uniform translations on configuration space

An integration by parts formula is derived for the first order differential operator corresponding to the action of translations on the space of locally finite simple configurations of infinitely many points on R^d. As reference measures, tempered grand canonical Gibbs measures are considered corresponding to a non-constant non-smooth intensity (one-body potential) and translation invariant potentials fulfilling the usual conditions. It is proven that such Gibbs measures fulfill the intuitive integration by parts formula if and only if the action of the translation is not broken for this particular measure. The latter is automatically fulfilled in the high temperature and low intensity regime.

Spectral gap for Glauber type dynamics for a special class of potentials

We consider an equilibrium birth and death type process for a particle system in infinite volume, the latter is described by the space of all locally finite point configurations on $\R^d$. These Glauber type dynamics are Markov processes constructed for pre-given reversible measures. A representation for the "carré du champ" and "second carré du champ" for the associate infinitesimal generators $L$ are calculated in infinite volume and a corresponding coercivity identity is derived. The latter is used to give explicit sufficient conditions for the appearance and bounds for the size of the spectral gap of $L$. These techniques are applied to Glauber dynamics associated to Gibbs measure and conditions are derived extending all previous known results. In the high temperature regime now potentials also with a non-trivial negative part can be treated. Furthermore, a special class of potentials is defined for which the size of the spectral gap is as least as large as for the free system and, surprisingly, is independent of the activity. This type of potentials should not show any phase transition for a given temperature at any activity.

Marked Gibbs measures via cluster expansion

We give a sufficiently detailed account on the construction of marked Gibbs measures in the high temperature and low fugacity regime. This is proved for a wide class of underlying spaces and potentials such that stability and integrability conditions are satisfied. That is, for state space we take a locally compact separable metric space $X$ and a separable metric space $S$ for the mark space. This framework allowed us to cover several models of classical and quantum statistical physics. Furthermore, we also show how to extend the construction for more general spaces as e.g., separable standard Borel spaces. The construction of the marked Gibbs measures is based on the method of cluster expansion.
