Muon decay in a linearly polarized laser field

In a previous paper, we showed that the decay rate of a muon is only slightly affected by the presence of a circularly polarized laser and we gave an analytic expression for the correction. In this paper, we present the analytical result for the case of a linearly polarized laser. Again the effect of the laser is small.

Muon decay in a laser field

We investigate the change in the decay rate of a muon caused by embedding it in the field of a laser. A previous paper found that the change could be large, as much as an order of magnitude. We find the more intuitive result that the change is small and give analytic expressions for the small corrections.

Pair production with neutrinos in an intense background magnetic field

We present a detailed calculation of the electron-positron production rate using neutrinos in an intense background magnetic field. The computation is done for the process nu -> nu e- e+ (where nu can be nu_e, nu_mu, or nu_tau) within the framework of the Standard Model. Results are given for various combinations of Landau-levels over a range of possible incoming neutrino energies and magnetic field strengths.

Pair production with neutrinos and high-intensity laser fields

We present a detailed calculation of the electron-positron production rate using neutrinos in an intense laser field. The computation is done for the process neutrino to neutrino + electron + positron via the neutral channel and within the framework of the Standard Model. The production rates are tabulated for a range of incoming neutrino energies in an electromagnetic field similar to what can be attained by current high-intensity lasers.

Comment on "Evolution of a Quasi-Stationary State"

Approximately forty years ago it was realized that the time development of decaying systems might not be precisely exponential. Rolf Winter (Phys. Rev. {\bf 123}, 1503 (1961)) analyzed the simplest nontrivial system - a particle tunneling out of a well formed by a wall and a delta-function. He calculated the probability current just outside the well and found irregular oscillations on a short time scale followed by an exponential decrease followed by more oscillations and finally by a decrease as a power of the time. We have reanalyzed this system, concentrating on the survival probability of the particle in the well rather than the probability current, and find a different short time behavior.

Z decay into two massless gauge bosons in a magnetic field

An investigation of the processes Z to gluon-gluon and Z to photon-photon in a background magnetic field is presented. For homogeneous fields corrections to the charged fermion propagator can be calculated in leading orders of the magnetic field. This work examines the first order contributions of the corrected propagator to decays that are otherwise zero. Results of the decay rates for varying field strengths are included.
