Composition-dependent ultrafast luminescence in Cu-Ni alloys: Combined experimental and ab initio study

Properties of Cu-Ni solid solutions have long been studied in physical and materials sciences. Yet, their many-body properties have not been well understood. Here, we investigate ultrafast luminescence in near infrared region for Cu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$ alloys. The luminescence intensity was the highest in Cu and decreased dramatically by adding Ni, approaching close to the value for pure Ni at $x=0.45$. This composition dependence was well reproduced by calculations assuming two body scattering of the energetic electrons. The luminescent decay rate was not straightforward, i.e., it decreased first by adding Ni up to $x=0.17$ and then started to increase approaching twice the initial value at $x=0.45$. This behavior was in good agreement with ab initio calculations of electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling strength. This work provides a new perspective on the electron relaxation dynamics in solid solutions systems.

Terahertz field-induced nonlinear coupling of two magnon modes in an antiferromagnet

Magnons are quantized collective spin-wave excitations in magnetically ordered materials. Revealing their interactions among these collective modes is crucial for the understanding of fundamental many-body effects in such systems and the development of high-speed information transport and processing devices based on them. Nevertheless, identifying couplings between individual magnon modes remains a long-standing challenge. Here, we demonstrate spectroscopic fingerprints of anharmonic coupling between distinct magnon modes in an antiferromagnet, as evidenced by coherent photon emission at the sum and difference frequencies of the two modes. This discovery is enabled by driving two magnon modes coherently with a pair of tailored terahertz fields and then disentangling a mixture of nonlinear responses with different origins. Our approach provides a route for generating nonlinear magnon-magnon mixing.

Spin canting in nonlinear terahertz magnon dynamics revealed by magnetorefractive probing in orthoferrite

We excite the spin precession in rare-earth orthoferrite YFeO3 by the magnetic field of intense terahertz pulse and probe its dynamics by transient absorption change in the near infrared. The observed waveforms contain quasi-ferromagnetic-mode magnon oscillation and its second harmonics with a comparably strong amplitude. The result can be explained by dielectric function derived from magnetorefractive Hamiltonian. We reveal that the strong second harmonic signal microscopically originates from novel dynamics of the quasi-ferromagnetic mode magnon at nonlinear regime, wherein spin canting angle periodically oscillates.

Ultrafast photoluminescence in metals: Theory and its application to silver

We study the transient photoluminescence (PL) of photoexcited metals by solving the Boltzmann equation considering the effects of electron-electron (e-e) and electron-phonon (e-ph) collisions, where the e-ph coupling function is calculated from first-principles in order to account for the energy transfer rate between electrons and phonons accurately. We apply the present scheme to the transient PL of silver and demonstrate that the agreement between the theory and experiment is good, where the effect of nonequilibrium electron distribution is significant to fit the experimental data. The effects of the nanoscale roughness at metal surfaces and the e-e umklapp scattering on ultrafast electron dynamics are also discussed.

Two-dimensional terahertz magnetic resonance spectroscopy of collective spin waves

Nonlinear manipulation of nuclear and electron spins is the basis for all advanced methods in magnetic resonance including multidimensional nuclear magnetic and electron spin resonance spectroscopies, magnetic resonance imaging, and in recent years, quantum control over individual spins. The methodology is facilitated by the ease with which the regime of strong coupling can be reached between radiofrequency or microwave magnetic fields and nuclear or electron spins respectively, typified by sequences of magnetic pulses that control the magnetic moment directions. The capabilities meet a bottleneck, however, for far-infrared magnetic resonances characteristic of correlated electron materials, molecular magnets, and proteins that contain high-spin transition metal ions. Here we report the development of two-dimensional terahertz magnetic resonance spectroscopy and its use for direct observation of the nonlinear responses of collective spin waves (magnons). The spectra show magnon spin echoes and 2-quantum signals that reveal pairwise correlations between magnons at the Brillouin zone center. They also show resonance-enhanced second-harmonic and difference-frequency signals. Our methods are readily generalizable to multidimensional magnetic resonance spectroscopy and nonlinear coherent control of terahertz-frequency spin systems in molecular complexes, biomolecules, and materials.

Nonlinear Photoluminescence Properties of Trions in Hole-doped Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes

We studied the excitation density dependence of photoluminescence (PL) spectra of excitons and trions (charged excitons) in hole-doped single-walled carbon nanotubes. We found that the PL intensity of trions exhibited a strong nonlinear saturation behavior as the excitation density increased, whereas that of excitons exhibited a weak sublinear behavior. The strong PL saturation of trions is attributed to depletion of doped holes that are captured by excitons in the formation processes. Moreover, the effective radiative lifetime of a trion was evaluated to be approximately 20 ns.

Mechanism of enhanced optical second-harmonic generation in the conducting pyrochlore-type Pb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7-x}$ oxide compound

The structural, electronic, and optical properties of pyrochlore-type Pb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{6}$O'$_{0.55}$, which is a metal without spatial inversion symmetry at room temperature, were investigated. Structural analysis revealed that the structural distortion relevant to the breakdown of the inversion symmetry is dominated by the Pb-O' network but is very small in the Ir-O network. At the same time, gigantic second-harmonic generation signals were observed, which can only occur if the local environment of the Ir 5$d$ electrons features broken inversion symmetry. First-principles electronic structure calculations reveal that the underlying mechanism for this phenomenon is the induction of the noncentrosymmetricity in the Ir 5$d$ bands by the strong hybridization with O' 2$p$ orbitals. Our results stimulate theoretical study of inversion-broken iridates, where exotic quantum states such as a topological insulator and Dirac semimetal are anticipated.
