Diagonal-preserving graded isomorphisms of Steinberg algebras

We study Steinberg algebras constructed from ample Hausdorff groupoids over commutative integral domains with identity. We reconstruct (graded) groupoids from (graded) Steinberg algebras and use this to characterise when there is a diagonal-preserving (graded) isomorphism between two (graded) Steinberg algebras. We apply this characterisation to groupoids of directed graphs in order to study diagonal-preserving (graded) isomorphisms of Leavitt path algebras and graph $C^*$-algebras.

Flow equivalence and isotopy for subshifts

We study basic properties of flow equivalence on one-dimensional compact metric spaces with a particular emphasis on isotopy in the group of (self-) flow equivalences on such a space. In particular, we show that an orbit-preserving such map is not always an isotopy, but that this always is the case for suspension flows of irreducible shifts of finite type. We also provide a version of the fundamental discretization result of Parry and Sullivan which does not require that the flow maps are either injective or surjective. Our work is motivated by applications in the classification theory of sofic shift spaces, but has been formulated to supply a solid and accessible foundation for other purposes.

Orbit equivalence of graphs and isomorphism of graph groupoids

We show that the groupoids of two directed graphs are isomorphic if and only if the two graphs are orbit equivalent by an orbit equivalence that preserves isolated eventually periodic points. We also give a complete description of the (topological) isolated points of the boundary path space of a graph. As a result, we are able to show that the groupoids of two directed graphs with finitely many vertices and no sinks are isomorphic if and only if the two graphs are orbit equivalent, and that the groupoids of the stabilisations of two such graphs are isomorphic if and only if the stabilisations of the graphs are orbit equivalent.

Diagonal-preserving gauge-invariant isomorphisms of graph $C^*$-algebras

We study graph $C^*$-algebras equipped with generalised gauge actions, and characterise in terms of groupoids and groupoid cocycles when two graph $C^*$-algebras are isomorphic by a diagonal-preserving isomorphism that intertwines the generalised gauge actions. We apply this characterisation to show that two Cuntz-Krieger algebras are isomorphic by a diagonal-preserving isomorphism that intertwines the gauge actions if and only if the corresponding one-sided subshifts are eventually conjugate, and that the stabilisation of two Cuntz-Krieger algebras are isomorphic by a diagonal-preserving isomorphism that intertwines the gauge actions if and only if the corresponding two-sided subshifts are conjugate.

Equivalence and stable isomorphism of groupoids, and diagonal-preserving stable isomorphisms of graph C*-algebras and Leavitt path algebras

We prove that ample groupoids with sigma-compact unit spaces are equivalent if and only if they are stably isomorphic in an appropriate sense, and relate this to Matui's notion of Kakutani equivalence. We use this result to show that diagonal-preserving stable isomorphisms of graph C*-algebras or Leavitt path algebras give rise to isomorphisms of the groupoids of the associated stabilised graphs. We deduce that the Leavitt path algebras $L_Z(E_2)$ and $L_Z(E_{2-})$ are not stably *-isomorphic.

Strong classification of purely infinite Cuntz-Krieger algebras

In 2006, Restorff completed the classification of all Cuntz-Krieger algebras with finitely many ideals (i.e., those that are purely infinite) up to stable isomorphism. He left open the questions concerning strong classification up to stable isomorphism and unital classification. In this paper, we address both questions. We show that any isomorphism between the reduced filtered K-theory of two Cuntz-Krieger algebras with finitely many ideals lifts to a *-isomorphism between the stabilized Cuntz-Krieger algebras. As a result, we also obtain strong unital classification.

$C^*$-algebras associated to Boolean dynamical systems

The goal of these notes is to present the C*-algebra $C^*(B,L,θ)$ of a Boolean dynamical system $(B,L,θ)$, that generalizes the $C^*$-algebra associated to Labelled graphs introduced by Bates and Pask, and to determine its simplicity, its gauge invariant ideals, as well as compute its K-Theory

Flow equivalence of sofic shifts

We classify certain sofic shifts (the irreducible Point Extension Type, or PET, sofic shifts) up to flow equivalence, using invariants of the canonical Fischer cover. There are two main ingredients: (1) An extension theorem, for extending flow equivalences of subshifts to flow equivalent irreducible shifts of finite type which contain them. (2) The classification of certain constant to one maps from SFTs via algebraic invariants of associated G-SFTs.

$C^*$-algebras of labelled graphs III - $K$-theory computations

In this paper we give a formula for the $K$-theory of the $C^*$-algebra of a weakly left-resolving labelled space. This is done by realising the $C^*$-algebra of a weakly left-resolving labelled space as the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a $C^*$-correspondence. As a corollary we get a gauge invariant uniqueness theorem for the $C^*$-algebra of any weakly left-resolving labelled space. In order to achieve this we must modify the definition of the $C^*$-algebra of a weakly left-resolving labelled space. We also establish strong connections between the various classes of $C^*$-algebras which are associated with shift spaces and labelled graph algebras. Hence, by computing the $K$-theory of a labelled graph algebra we are providing a common framework for computing the $K$-theory of graph algebras, ultragraph algebras, Exel-Laca algebras, Matsumoto algebras and the $C^*$-algebras of Carlsen. We provide an inductive limit approach for computing the $K$-groups of an important class of labelled graph algebras, and give examples.

Graph algebras and orbit equivalence

We introduce the notion of orbit equivalence of directed graphs, following Matsumoto's notion of continuous orbit equivalence for topological Markov shifts. We show that two graphs in which every cycle has an exit are orbit equivalent if and only if there is a diagonal-preserving isomorphism between their $C^*$-algebras. We show that it is necessary to assume that every cycle has an exit for the forward implication, but that the reverse implication holds for arbitrary graphs. As part of our analysis of arbitrary graphs $E$ we construct a groupoid $\mathcal{G}_{(C^*(E),\mathcal{D}(E))}$ from the graph algebra $C^*(E)$ and its diagonal subalgebra $\mathcal{D}(E)$ which generalises Renault's Weyl groupoid construction applied to $(C^*(E),\mathcal{D}(E))$. We show that $\mathcal{G}_{(C^*(E),\mathcal{D}(E))}$ recovers the graph groupoid $\mathcal{G}_E$ without the assumption that every cycle in $E$ has an exit, which is required to apply Renault's results to $(C^*(E),\mathcal{D}(E))$. We finish with applications of our results to out-splittings of graphs and to amplified graphs.

The primitive ideals of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of a row-finite higher-rank graph with no sources

We catalogue the primitive ideals of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of a row-finite higher-rank graph with no sources. Each maximal tail in the vertex set has an abelian periodicity group of finite rank at most that of the graph; the primitive ideals in the Cuntz-Krieger algebra are indexed by pairs consisting of a maximal tail and a character of its periodicity group. The Cuntz-Krieger algebra is primitive if and only if the whole vertex set is a maximal tail and the graph is aperiodic.

Simple Cuntz-Pimsner rings

Necessary and sufficient conditions for when every non-zero ideal in a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring contains a non-zero graded ideal, when a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring is simple, and when every ideal in a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring is graded, are given. A "Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem" for relative Cuntz-Pimsner rings is also given and condition (L) and condition (K) for relative Cuntz-Pimsner rings are introduced.

Co-universal algebras associated to product systems, and gauge-invariant uniqueness theorems

Let X be a product system over a quasi-lattice ordered group. Under mild hypotheses, we associate to X a C*-algebra which is co-universal for injective Nica covariant Toeplitz representations of X which preserve the gauge coaction. Under appropriate amenability criteria, this co-universal C*-algebra coincides with the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra introduced by Sims and Yeend. We prove two key uniqueness theorems, and indicate how to use our theorems to realise a number of reduced crossed products as instances of our co-universal algebras. In each case, it is an easy corollary that the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra is isomorphic to the corresponding full crossed product.

Algebraic Cuntz-Pimsner rings

From a system consisting of a right non-degenerate ring $R$, a pair of $R$-bimodules $Q$ and $P$ and an $R$-bimodule homomorphism $ψ:P\otimes Q\longrightarrow R$ we construct a $\Z$-graded ring $\mathcal{T}_{(P,Q,ψ)}$ called the Toeplitz ring and (for certain systems) a $\Z$-graded quotient $\mathcal{O}_{(P,Q,ψ)}$ of $\mathcal{T}_{(P,Q,ψ)}$ called the Cuntz-Pimsner ring. These rings are the algebraic analogs of the Toeplitz $C^*$-algebra and the Cuntz-Pimsner $C^*$-algebra associated to a $C^*$-correspondence (also called a Hilbert bimodule). This new construction generalizes for example the algebraic crossed product by a single automorphism, corner skew Laurent polynomial ring by a single corner automorphism and Leavitt path algebras. We also describe the structure of the graded ideals of our graded rings in terms of pairs of ideals of the coefficient ring.

On the Exel crossed product of topological covering maps

For dynamical systems defined by a covering map of a compact Hausdorff space and the corresponding transfer operator, the associated crossed product $C^*$-algebras $\cros$ introduced by Exel and Vershik are considered. An important property for homeomorphism dynamical systems is topological freeness. It can be extended in a natural way to in general non-invertible dynamical systems generated by covering maps. In this article, it is shown that the following four properties are equivalent: the dynamical system generated by a covering map is topologically free; the canonical imbedding of $C(X)$ into $\cros$ is a maximal abelian $C^*$-subalgebra of $\cros$; any nontrivial two sided ideal of $\cros$ has non-zero intersection with the imbedded copy of $C(X)$; a certain natural representation of $\cros$ is faithful. This result is a generalization to non-invertible dynamics of the corresponding results for crossed product $C^*$-algebras of homeomorphism dynamical systems.

C*-algebras associated to shift spaces

These are some notes I wrote for the summer school "Symbolic dynamics and homeomorphisms of the Cantor set" at the University of Copenhagen, 23 - 27 June 2008. The notes contain the definition of the C*-algebra associated to a shift space and some basic facts about these. The notes furthermore contain a proof of the fact that the C*-algebra associated to a shift space is a one-sided conjugacy invariant, and a proof of the fact that the Morita equivalence class of the C*-algebra associated to a shift space is a two-sided conjugacy and a flow invariant. The notes also contain a section (without proofs) about the K-theory of C*-algebras associated to shift spaces. The notes are written for people without a background in operator algebra and contains a short appendix about C*-algebras, Morita equivalence and K-theory of C*-algebras.

Symbolic Dynamics, Partial Dynamical Systems, Boolean Algebras and C*-algebras Generated by Partial Isometries

We associate to each discrete partial dynamical system a universal C*-algebra generated by partial isometries satisfying relations given by a Boolean algebra connected to the discrete partial dynamical system in question. We show that for symbolic dynamical systems like one-sided and two-sided shift spaces and topological Markov chains with an arbitrary state space the C*-algebras usually associated to them, can be obtained in this way. As a consequence of this, we will be able to show that for two-sided shift spaces having a certain property, the crossed product of the two-sided shift space is a quotient of the C*-algebra associated to the corresponding one-sided shift space.
