Motivic colimits and extended powers

We define a notion of colimit for diagrams in a motivic category indexed by a presheaf of spaces (e.g. an étale classifying space), and we study basic properties of this construction. As a case study, we construct the motivic analogs of the classical extended and generalized powers, which refine the categorical versions of these constructions as special cases. We also offer more computationally tractable models of these constructions using equivariant motivic homotopy theory. This is the first in a series of papers on power operations in motivic stable homotopy theory.

Nilpotence in normed MGL-modules

We establish a motivic version of the May Nilpotence Conjecture: if E is a normed motivic spectrum that satisfies $E \wedge HZ \simeq 0$, then also $E \wedge MGL \simeq 0$. In words, motivic homology detects vanishing of normed modules over the algebraic cobordism spectrum.

Motivic spectral Mackey functors

We show that if G is a finite constant group acting on a scheme X such that the order of G is invertible in the residue fields of X, then the G-equivariant motivic stable homotopy category of X is equivalent to the stabilization of the category of motivic G-spaces with finite étale transfers over X at the trivial representation sphere. Along the way we obtain several results of independent interest, among them: we construct and study norms in the motivic homotopy theory of stacks, and we extend the homotopy t-structure to DM-stacks and establish some favorable properties.

Milnor-Witt Motives

We develop the theory of Milnor-Witt motives and motivic cohomology. Compared to Voevodsky's theory of motives and his motivic cohomology, the first difference appears in our definition of Milnor-Witt finite correspondences, where our cycles come equipped with quadratic forms. This yields a weaker notion of transfers and a derived category of motives that is closer to the stable homotopy theory of schemes. We prove a cancellation theorem when tensoring with the Tate object, we compare the diagonal part of our Milnor-Witt motivic cohomology to Minor-Witt K-theory and we provide spectra representing various versions of motivic cohomology in the $\mathbb{A}^1$-derived category or the stable homotopy category of schemes.

$η$-periodic motivic stable homotopy theory over Dedekind domains

We construct well-behaved extensions of the motivic spectra representing generalized motivic cohomology and connective Balmer--Witt K-theory (among others) to mixed characteristic Dedekind schemes on which 2 is invertible. As a consequence we lift the fundamental fiber sequence of $η$-periodic motivic stable homotopy theory established in [arxiv:2005.06778] from fields to arbitrary base schemes, and use this to determine (among other things) the $η$-periodized algebraic symplectic and SL-cobordism groups of mixed characteristic Dedekind schemes containing 1/2.

Motivic Tambara Functors

Let k be a field and denote by SH(k) the motivic stable homotopy category. Recall its full subcategory HI_0(k) of effective homotopy modules. Write NAlg(HI_0(k)) for the category of normed motivic spectra with underlying spectrum an effective homotopy module. In this article we provide an explicit description of NAlg(HI_0(k)) as the category of sheaves with generalized transfers and étale norms, and explain how this is closely related to the classical notion of Tambara functors.

The zeroth P^1-stable homotopy sheaf of a motivic space

We establish a kind of "degree zero Freudenthal Gm-suspension theorem" in motivic homotopy theory. From this we deduce results about the conservativity of the P^1-stabilization functor. In order to establish these results, we show how to compute certain pullbacks in the cohomology of a strictly homotopy invariant sheaf in terms of the Rost--Schmid complex. This establishes the main conjecture of [BY18], which easily implies the aforementioned results.

Rigidity in etale motivic stable homotopy theory

For a scheme X, denote by SH(X_et^hyp) the stabilization of the hypercompletion of its etale infty-topos, and by SH_et(X) the localization of the stable motivic homotopy category SH(X) at the (desuspensions of) etale hypercovers. For a stable infty-category C, write C_p^comp for the p-completion of C. We prove that under suitable finiteness hypotheses, and assuming that p is invertible on X, the canonical functor e_p^comp: SH(X_et^hyp)_p^comp -> SH_et(X)_p^comp is an equivalence of infty-categories. The primary novelty of our argument is that we use the pro-etale topology to construct directly an invertible object Sptw[1] in SH(X_et^hyp)_p^comp with the property that e_p^comp(Sptw[1]) = Sigma^infty Gm.

Cancellation theorem for motivic spaces with finite flat transfers

We show that the category of motivic spaces with transfers along finite flat morphisms, over a perfect field, satisfies all the properties we have come to expect of good categories of motives. In particular we establish the analog of Voevodsky's cancellation theorem.

On étale motivic spectra and Voevodsky's convergence conjecture

We prove a new convergence result for the slice spectral sequence, following work by Levine and Voevodsky. This verifies a derived variant of Voevodsky's conjecture on convergence of the slice spectral sequence. This is, in turn, a necessary ingredient for our main theorem: a Thomason-style étale descent result for the Bott-inverted motivic sphere spectrum, which generalizes and extends previous étale descent results for special examples of motivic cohomology theories. Combined with first author's étale rigidity results, we obtain a complete structural description of the étale motivic stable category.

The Chow $t$-structure on the $\infty$-category of motivic spectra

We define the Chow $t$-structure on the $\infty$-category of motivic spectra $SH(k)$ over an arbitrary base field $k$. We identify the heart of this $t$-structure $SH(k)^{c\heartsuit}$ when the exponential characteristic of $k$ is inverted. Restricting to the cellular subcategory, we identify the Chow heart $SH(k)^{cell, c\heartsuit}$ as the category of even graded $MU_{2*}MU$-comodules. Furthermore, we show that the $\infty$-category of modules over the Chow truncated sphere spectrum is algebraic. Our results generalize the ones in Gheorghe--Wang--Xu in three aspects: To integral results; To all base fields other than just $C$; To the entire $\infty$-category of motivic spectra $SH(k)$, rather than a subcategory containing only certain cellular objects. We also discuss a strategy for computing motivic stable homotopy groups of (p-completed) spheres over an arbitrary base field $k$ using the Postnikov tower associated to the Chow $t$-structure and the motivic Adams spectral sequences over $k$.

Voevodsky's slice conjectures via Hilbert schemes

Using recent development in motivic infinite loop space theory, we offer short and conceptual reproofs of some conjectures of Voevodsky's on the slice filtration using the birational geometry of Hilbert schemes. The original proofs were due to Marc Levine using very different methods, namely, the homotopy coniveau tower.

On the infinite loop spaces of algebraic cobordism and the motivic sphere

We obtain geometric models for the infinite loop spaces of the motivic spectra $\mathrm{MGL}$, $\mathrm{MSL}$, and $\mathbf{1}$ over a field. They are motivically equivalent to $\mathbb{Z}\times \mathrm{Hilb}_\infty^\mathrm{lci}(\mathbb{A}^\infty)^+$, $\mathbb{Z}\times \mathrm{Hilb}_\infty^\mathrm{or}(\mathbb{A}^\infty)^+$, and $\mathbb{Z}\times \mathrm{Hilb}_\infty^\mathrm{fr}(\mathbb{A}^\infty)^+$, respectively, where $\mathrm{Hilb}_d^\mathrm{lci}(\mathbb{A}^n)$ (resp. $\mathrm{Hilb}_d^\mathrm{or}(\mathbb{A}^n)$, $\mathrm{Hilb}_d^\mathrm{fr}(\mathbb{A}^n)$) is the Hilbert scheme of lci points (resp. oriented points, framed points) of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{A}^n$, and $+$ is Quillen's plus construction. Moreover, we show that the plus construction is redundant in positive characteristic.

$η$-periodic motivic stable homotopy theory over fields

Over any field of characteristic not 2, we establish a 2-term resolution of the $η$-periodic, 2-local motivic sphere spectrum by shifts of the connective 2-local Witt K-theory spectrum. This is curiously similar to the resolution of the K(1)-local sphere in classical stable homotopy theory. As applications we determine the $η$-periodized motivic stable stems and the $η$-periodized algebraic symplectic and SL-cobordism groups. Along the way we construct Adams operations on the motivic spectrum representing Hermitian K-theory and establish new completeness results for certain motivic spectra over fields of finite virtual 2-cohomological dimension. In an appendix, we supply a new proof of the homotopy fixed point theorem for the Hermitian K-theory of fields.

Remarks on étale motivic stable homotopy theory

We strengthen some results in étale (and real étale) motivic stable homotopy theory, by eliminating finiteness hypotheses, additional localizations and/or extending to spectra from HZ-modules.

Topological models for stable motivic invariants of regular number rings

For an infinity of number rings we express stable motivic invariants in terms of topological data determined by the complex numbers, the real numbers, and finite fields. We use this to extend Morel's identification of the endomorphism ring of the motivic sphere with the Grothendieck-Witt ring of quadratic forms to deeper base schemes.

Norms in motivic homotopy theory

If $f:S' \to S$ is a finite locally free morphism of schemes, we construct a symmetric monoidal "norm" functor $f_\otimes: \mathcal H_*(S') \to\mathcal H_*(S)$, where $\mathcal H_*(S)$ is the pointed unstable motivic homotopy category over $S$. If $f$ is finite étale, we show that it stabilizes to a functor $f_\otimes: \mathcal{SH}(S') \to \mathcal{SH}(S)$, where $\mathcal{SH}(S)$ is the $\mathbb P^1$-stable motivic homotopy category over $S$. Using these norm functors, we define the notion of a normed motivic spectrum, which is an enhancement of a motivic $E_\infty$-ring spectrum. The main content of this text is a detailed study of the norm functors and of normed motivic spectra, and the construction of examples. In particular: we investigate the interaction of norms with Grothendieck's Galois theory, with Betti realization, and with Voevodsky's slice filtration; we prove that the norm functors categorify Rost's multiplicative transfers on Grothendieck-Witt rings; and we construct normed spectrum structures on the motivic cohomology spectrum $H\mathbb Z$, the homotopy K-theory spectrum $KGL$, and the algebraic cobordism spectrum $MGL$. The normed spectrum structure on $H\mathbb Z$ is a common refinement of Fulton and MacPherson's mutliplicative transfers on Chow groups and of Voevodsky's power operations in motivic cohomology.
