Nanofiber based displacement sensor

We report on the realization of a displacement sensor based on an optical nanofiber. A single gold nano-sphere is deposited on top of a nanofiber and the system is placed within a standing wave which serves as a position ruler. Scattered light collected within the guided mode of the fiber gives a direct measure of the nanofiber displacement. We calibrated our device and found a sensitivity up to 1.2~nm/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$. A mechanical model based on the Mie scattering theory is then used to evaluate the optically induced force on the nanofiber by an external laser. With our sensing system, we demonstrate that an external force of 1~pN applied at the nanofiber waist can be detected.

Coherent and Incoherent Multiple Scattering

We compare two different models of transport of light in a disordered system with a spherical Gaussian distribution of scatterers. A coupled dipole model, keeping into account all interference effects, is compared to an incoherent model, using a random walk of particles. Besides the well known coherent backscattering effect and a well pronounced forward lobe, the incoherent model reproduces extremely well all scattering features. In an experiment with cold atoms, we use the momentum recoil imparted on the center of mass of the sample as a partial probe of the light scattering properties. We find that the force acting on the center of mass of the atoms is not well suited to exhibit the coherence effects in light propagation under multiple scattering conditions.

Interplay between radiation pressure force and scattered light intensity in the cooperative scattering by cold atoms

The interplay between the superradiant emission of a cloud of cold two-level atoms and the radiation pressure force is discussed. Using a microscopic model of coupled atomic dipoles driven by an external laser, the radiation field and the average radiation pressure force are derived. A relation between the far-field scattered intensity and the force is derived, using the optical theorem. Finally, the scaling of the sample scattering cross section with the parameters of the system is studied.

Fast compression of a cold atomic cloud using a blue detuned crossed dipole trap

We present the experimental realization of a compressible blue detuned crossed dipole trap for cold atoms allowing for fast dynamical compression (~ 5 - 10 ms) of 5x10^7 Rubidium atoms up to densities of ~ 10^13 cm^-3. The dipole trap consists of two intersecting tubes of blue-detuned laser light. These tubes are formed using a single, rapidly rotating laser beam which, for sufficiently fast rotation frequencies, can be accurately described by a quasi-static potential. The atomic cloud is compressed by dynamically reducing the trap volume leading to densities close to the Ioffe-Reggel criterion for light localization.

Cooperativity in light scattering by cold atoms

A cloud of cold N two-level atoms driven by a resonant laser beam shows cooperative effects both in the scattered radiation field and in the radiation pressure force acting on the cloud center-of-mass. The induced dipoles synchronize and the scattered light presents superradiant and/or subradiant features. We present a quantum description of the process in terms of a master equation for the atomic density matrix in the scalar, Born-Markov approximations, reduced to the single-excitation limit. From a perturbative approach for weak incident field, we derive from the master equation the effective Hamiltonian, valid in the linear regime. We discuss the validity of the driven timed Dicke ansatz and of a partial wave expansion for different optical thicknesses and we give analytical expressions for the scattered intensity and the radiation pressure force on the center of mass. We also derive an expression for collective suppression of the atomic excitation and the scattered light by these correlated dipoles.

Atom and photon measurement in cooperative scattering by cold atoms

In this paper, we study cooperative scattering of low intensity light by a cloud of N two-level systems. We include the incident laser field driving these two-level systems and compute the radiation pressure force on the center of mass of the cloud. This signature is of particular interest for experiments with laser cooled atoms. Including the complex coupling between dipoles in a scalar model for dilute clouds of two-level systems, we obtain expression for cooperative scattering forces taking into account the collective Lamb shift. We also derive the expression of the radiation pressure force on a large cloud of two-level systems from an heuristic approach and show that at lowest driving intensities this force is identical for a product and an entangled state.

Controlled Dicke Subradiance from a Large Cloud of Two-Level Systems

Dicke superradiance has been observed in many systems and is based on constructive interferences between many scattered waves. The counterpart of this enhanced dynamics, subradiance, is a destructive interference effect leading to the partial trapping of light in the system. In contrast to the robust superradiance, subradiant states are fragile and spurious decoherence phenomena hitherto obstructed the observation of such metastable states. We show that a dilute cloud of cold atoms is an ideal system to look for subradiance in free space and study various mechanisms to control this subradiance.

Observation of a Cooperative Radiation Force in the Presence of Disorder

Cooperative scattering of light by an extended object such as an atomic ensemble or a dielectric sphere is fundamentally different from scattering from many point-like scatterers such as single atoms. Homogeneous distributions tend to scatter cooperatively, whereas fluctuations of the density distribution increase the disorder and suppress cooperativity. In an atomic cloud, the amount of disorder can be tuned via the optical thickness, and its role can be studied via the radiation force exerted by the light on the atomic cloud. Monitoring cold $^{87}\text{Rb}$ atoms released from a magneto-optical trap, we present the first experimental signatures of radiation force reduction due to cooperative scattering. The results are in agreement with an analytical expression interpolating between the disorder and the cooperativity-dominated regimes.

Modification of radiation pressure due to cooperative scattering of light

Cooperative spontaneous emission of a single photon from a cloud of N atoms modifies substantially the radiation pressure exerted by a far-detuned laser beam exciting the atoms. On one hand, the force induced by photon absorption depends on the collective decay rate of the excited atomic state. On the other hand, directional spontaneous emission counteracts the recoil induced by the absorption. We derive an analytical expression for the radiation pressure in steady-state. For a smooth extended atomic distribution we show that the radiation pressure depends on the atom number via cooperative scattering and that, for certain atom numbers, it can be suppressed or enhanced.

Localization for one-dimensional random potentials with large local fluctuations

We study the localization of wave functions for one-dimensional Schrödinger Hamiltonians with random potentials $V(x)$ with short range correlations and large local fluctuations such that $\int\D{x} \smean{V(x)V(0)}=\infty$. A random supersymmetric Hamiltonian is also considered. Depending on how large the fluctuations of $V(x)$ are, we find either new energy dependences of the localization length, $\ell_\mathrm{loc}\propto{}E/\ln{E}$, $\ell_\mathrm{loc}\propto{}E^{μ/2}$ with $0<μ<2$ or $\ell_\mathrm{loc}\propto\ln^{μ-1}E$ for $μ>1$, or superlocalization (decay of the wave functions faster than a simple exponential).
