The monodromy of meromorphic projective structures

We study projective structures on a surface having poles of prescribed orders. We obtain a monodromy map from a complex manifold parameterising such structures to the stack of framed $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ local systems on the associated marked bordered surface. We prove that the image of this map is contained in the union of the domains of the cluster charts. We discuss a number of open questions concerning this monodromy map.

Fourier-Mukai transforms for K3 and elliptic fibrations

Given a non-singular variety with a K3 fibration f : X --> S we construct dual fibrations Y --> S by replacing each fibre X_s of f by a two-dimensional moduli space of stable sheaves on X_s. In certain cases we prove that the resulting scheme Y is a non-singular variety and construct an equivalence of derived categories of coherent sheaves Φ: D(Y) --> D(X). Our methods also apply to elliptic and abelian surface fibrations. As an application we show how the equivalences Φidentify certain moduli spaces of stable bundles on elliptic threefolds with Hilbert schemes of curves.

Derived categories of coherent sheaves

We discuss derived categories of coherent sheaves on algebraic varieties. We focus on the case of non-singular Calabi-Yau varieties and consider two unsolved problems: proving that birational varieties have equivalent derived categories, and computing the group of derived autoequivalences. We also introduce the space of stability conditions on a triangulated category and explain its relevance to these two problems.

Complex surfaces with equivalent derived categories

We examine the extent to which a smooth minimal complex projective surface X is determined by its derived category of coherent sheaves D(X). To do this we find, for each such surface X, the set of surfaces Y for which there exists a Fourier-Mukai transform D(Y) --> D(X).

Derived automorphism groups of K3 surfaces of Picard rank 1

We give a complete description of the group of exact autoequivalences of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a K3 surface of Picard rank 1. We do this by proving that a distinguished connected component of the space of stability conditions is preserved by all autoequivalences, and is contractible.

Quadratic differentials as stability conditions

We prove that moduli spaces of meromorphic quadratic differentials with simple zeroes on compact Riemann surfaces can be identified with spaces of stability conditions on a class of CY3 triangulated categories defined using quivers with potential associated to triangulated surfaces. We relate the finite-length trajectories of such quadratic differentials to the stable objects of the corresponding stability condition.

Quantum groups via Hall algebras of complexes

We describe quantum enveloping algebras of symmetric Kac-Moody Lie algebras via a finite field Hall algebra construction involving Z_2-graded complexes of quiver representations.

Stability conditions and Stokes factors

Let A be the category of modules over a complex, finite-dimensional algebra. We show that the space of stability conditions on A parametrises an isomonodromic family of irregular connections on P^1 with values in the Hall algebra of A. The residues of these connections are given by the holomorphic generating function for counting invariants in A constructed by D. Joyce.

An introduction to motivic Hall algebras

We give an introduction to Joyce's construction of the motivic Hall algebra of coherent sheaves on a variety M. When M is a Calabi-Yau threefold we define a semi-classical integration map from a Poisson subalgebra of this Hall algebra to the ring of functions on a symplectic torus. This material will be used in arxiv:1002.4374 to prove some basic properties of Donaldson-Thomas curve-counting invariants on Calabi-Yau threefolds.

Helices on del Pezzo surfaces and tilting Calabi-Yau algebras

We study tilting for a class of Calabi-Yau algebras associated to helices on Fano varieties. We do this by relating the tilting operation to mutations of exceptional collections. For helices on del Pezzo surfaces the algebras are of dimension three, and using an argument of Herzog, together with results of Kuleshov and Orlov, we obtain a complete description of the tilting process in terms of quiver mutations.

Stability conditions on K3 surfaces

This paper contains a description of one connected component of the space of stability conditions on the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a complex algebraic K3 surface.

Spaces of stability conditions

Stability conditions are a mathematical way to understand $Π$-stability for D-branes in string theory. Spaces of stability conditions seem to be related to moduli spaces of conformal field theories. This is a survey article describing what is currently known about spaces of stability conditions, and giving some pointers for future research.

A criterion for regularity of local rings

It is proved that a noetherian commutative local ring A containing a field is regular if there is a complex M of free A-modules with the following properties: M_i=0 for i not in [0,dim A]; the homology of M has finite length; H_0(M) contains the residue field of A as a direct summand. This result is an essential component in the proofs of the McKay correspondence in dimension 3 and of the statement that threefold flops induce equivalences of derived categories.

Stability conditions on a non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold

We study the space of stability conditions $\Stab(X)$ on the non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ which is the total space of the canonical bundle of $\PP^2$. We give a combinatorial description of an open subset of $\Stab(X)$ and state a conjecture relating $\Stab(X)$ to the Frobenius manifold obtained from the quantum cohomology of $\PP^2$. We give some evidence from mirror symmetry for this conjecture.

Stability conditions on triangulated categories

This paper introduces the notion of a stability condition on a triangulated category. The motivation comes from the study of Dirichlet branes in string theory, and especially from M.R. Douglas's notion of $Π$-stability. From a mathematical point of view, the most interesting feature of the definition is that the set of stability conditions $\Stab(\T)$ on a fixed category $\T$ has a natural topology, thus defining a new invariant of triangulated categories. After setting up the necessary definitions I prove a deformation result which shows that the space $\Stab(\T)$ with its natural topology is a manifold, possibly infinite-dimensional.

T-structures on some local Calabi-Yau varieties

Let $Z$ be a Fano variety satisfying the condition that the rank of the Grothendieck group of $Z$ is one more than the dimension of $Z$. Let $ω_Z$ denote the total space of the canonical line bundle of $Z$, considered as a non-compact Calabi-Yau variety. We use the theory of exceptional collections to describe t-structures on the derived category of coherent sheaves on $ω_Z$. The combinatorics of these t-structures is determined by a natural action of an affine braid group, closely related to the well-known action of the Artin braid group on the set of exceptional collections on $Z$.

Flops and derived categories

This paper contains some applications of Fourier-Mukai techniques to the birational geometry of threefolds. In particular, we prove that birational Calabi-Yau threefolds have equivalent derived categories. To do this we show how flops arise naturally as moduli spaces of perverse coherent sheaves.
