A Graphop Analysis of Graph Neural Networks on Sparse Graphs: Generalization and Universal Approximation

Generalization and approximation capabilities of message passing graph neural networks (MPNNs) are often studied by defining a compact metric on a space of input graphs under which MPNNs are equicontinuous. Such analyses are of two varieties: 1) when the metric space includes graphs of unbounded sizes, the theory is only appropriate for dense graphs, and, 2) when studying sparse graphs, the metric space only includes graphs of uniformly bounded size. In this work, we present a unified approach, defining a compact metric on the space of graphs of all sizes, both sparse and dense, under which MPNNs are equicontinuous. This leads to more powerful universal approximation theorems and generalization bounds than previous works. The theory is based on, and extends, a recent approach to graph limit theory called graphop analysis.

Smooth Surfaces via Nets of Geodesics

The goal of this study is to provide a method for computing the following: Given a network of curves in 3d (satisfying a condition at the intersection points), compute efficiently a smooth surface such that the curves are geodesics on it. This work can serve as a base for engineers who wish to implement computations of such surfaces in Computer Aided Design (CAD) software or other applications. The motivation for this study was the following hypothesis and observation together with the desire to improve CAD interfaces. The hypothesis and observation is that artists draw projections of geodesics to illustrate 3d objects: for example projections of nets of curves can be seen in drawings of Rembrandt. In addition, this observation is supported by research in cognitive sciences: in a seminal work by the late David Knill he suggested that the human visual system incorporates a geodesic constraint in the processing of reflected contours.

Minimal Gaussian Curvature Surface

This paper deals with finding surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which are as close as possible to being flat and span a given contour such that the contour is a geodesic on the sought surface. We look for a surface which minimizes the total Gaussian curvature squared. We show that by a change of coordinates the curvature of the optimal surface is controlled by a PDE which can be reduced to the biharmonic equation with an easy-to-define Dirichlet boundary condition and Neumann boundary condition zero. We then state a system of PDEs for the function whose graph is the optimal surface.

Fast Conformal Parameterization of Disks and Sphere Sectors

We prove a novel method for the embedding of a 3-fold rotationally symmetric sphere-type mesh onto a subset of the plane with 3-fold rotational symmetry. The embedding is free-boundary with the only additional constraint on the image set is that its translations tile the plane, in turn this forces the angles at the embedding of the branch points in the construction. These parameterizations are optimal with respect to the Dirichlet energy functional defined on simplicial complexes. Since the parameterization is over a fixed area domain, it is conformal (i.e. a minimizer of the LSCM energy). The embedding is done by a novel construction of a torus from 63 copies of the original sphere. As a foundation for this result we first prove the optimality of the embedding of disk-type meshes onto special types of triangles in the plane, and rectangles. The embedding of the 3-fold symmetric torus is full rank and so cannot be reduced by simpler constructions. 3-fold symmetric surfaces appear in nature, for example the surface of the 3-fold symmetric proteins PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 which are an important target of current studies.

Decomposition of random walk measures on the one-dimensional torus

The main result of this paper is a decomposition theorem for a measure on the one-dimensional torus. Given a sufficiently large subset $S$ of the positive integers, an arbitrary measure on the torus is decomposed as the sum of two measures. The first one $\mu_1$ has the property that the random walk with initial distribution $\mu_1$ evolved by the action of $S$ equidistributes very fast. The second measure $\mu_2$ in the decomposition is concentrated on very small neighborhoods of a small number of points.
