Critical Percolation as a Synthetic Data Model for Interpretability

Neural networks learn features that reflect the hierarchical, multi-scale structure of natural data. Synthetic datasets used to evaluate interpretability methods typically lack this structure, limiting their value as realistic toy models. To close this gap, we introduce a family of synthetic datasets consisting of hierarchical functions defined on critical mean-field percolation clusters embedded in a high-dimensional data space. The percolation data consists of sparse, low-dimensional fractal clusters with a power-law size distribution. Latent variables modeling a taxonomic hierarchy generate each data point's target value. The data model is analytically tractable with known critical exponents that fix its properties without requiring hyperparameter tuning. We leverage a mapping between percolation clusters, random trees, and additive coalescence to propose an almost linear-time algorithm to jointly sample a random tree and its hierarchical latent decomposition, enabling data generation at arbitrary scale. Using probing experiments, we find that the model's ground-truth latent variables can be linearly decoded from neural network activations. Together, sparsity, self-similarity, power-law statistics, and analytical tractability make critical percolation a principled testbed for interpretability research.

Harnessing Higgs Kinematics for HEFT Constraints

We present a momentum-dependent reweighting strategy to extend current LHC di-Higgs analyses within the $κ$-framework and SMEFT into the bosonic sector of the Higgs Effective Field Theory (HEFT). Unlike SMEFT, where symmetry constraints tightly correlate multi-Higgs processes, HEFT allows for a broader range of momentum-dependent deviations that can substantially impact di-Higgs kinematics and offer a powerful probe of non-linear Higgs dynamics. We generalise the interpretation of existing experimental analyses by integrating HEFT operators up to chiral dimension four into differential Monte Carlo reweighting. We quantify the sensitivity to representative HEFT operators using multi-dimensional likelihoods for Run 3 and project the reach at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). Particular emphasis is placed on how different exclusive final states, such as $b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ and $b\bar{b}γγ$, respond to momentum enhancements and how their complementary event selections drive exclusion limits. We further explore how rare final states, especially four-top production, can provide orthogonal constraints on HEFT-induced modifications, thereby enhancing global sensitivity to new physics effects in the Higgs sector.

Effective Field Theory descriptions of Higgs boson pair production

Higgs boson pair production is traditionally considered to be of particular interest for a measurement of the trilinear Higgs self-coupling. Yet it can offer insights into other couplings as well, since - in an effective field theory (EFT) parameterisation of potential new physics - both the production cross section and kinematical properties of the Higgs boson pair depend on various other Wilson coefficients of EFT operators. This note summarises the ongoing efforts related to the development of EFT tools for Higgs boson pair production in gluon fusion, and provides recommendations for the use of distinct EFT parameterisations in the Higgs boson pair production process. This document also outlines where further efforts are needed and provides a detailed analysis of theoretical uncertainties. Additionally, benchmark scenarios are updated. We also re-derive a parameterisation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in terms of the EFT Wilson coefficients both for the total cross section and the distribution in the invariant mass of the Higgs boson pair, providing for the first time also the covariance matrix. A reweighting procedure making use of the newly derived coefficients is validated, which can be used to significantly speed up experimental analyses.
