Spectrum of the Maxwell Equations for a Flat Interface between Non-Homogeneous Dispersive Media in 2D and 3D

The present work concerns the time-harmonic Maxwell equations in two- and three-dimensional space, divided into two half-spaces by a flat interface. The two half-spaces are filled with media whose electric permittivity is frequency-dependent and varies as a function of the distance from the interface only; this dependence is assumed to satisfy a regularity condition in each half-space but may be discontinuous at the interface. No specific model for the frequency dependence is assumed. For the associated operator pencil, we characterise subsets of the resolvent set and separate subsets of the Weyl spectrum corresponding to radiation away from the interface and along the interface, respectively. The characterisation of the sets is via conditions on the fundamental solutions. If the media are periodic in the direction orthogonal to the interface, a more explicit description of these sets can be given in terms of Floquet theory of related Sturm-Liouville equations. These results generalise earlier work in one and two dimensions where the media were assumed to be homogeneous in each half-space.

Spectrum of the Maxwell Equations for a Flat Interface between Homogeneous Dispersive Media

The paper determines and classifies the spectrum of a non-self-adjoint operator pencil generated by the time-harmonic Maxwell problem with a nonlinear dependence on the frequency for the case of two homogeneous materials joined at a planar interface. We study spatially one-dimensional and two-dimensional reductions in the whole space $\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{R}^2$. The dependence on the spectral parameter, i.e. the frequency, is in the dielectric function and we make no assumptions on its form. These function values determine the spectral sets. In order to allow also for non-conservative media, the dielectric function is allowed to be complex, yielding a non-self-adjoint problem. The whole spectrum consists of eigenvalues and the essential spectrum, but the various standard types of essential spectra do not coincide in all cases. The main tool for determining the essential spectra are Weyl sequences.

Bifurcation and Asymptotics of Cubically Nonlinear Transverse Magnetic Surface Plasmon Polaritons

Linear Maxwell equations for transverse magnetic (TM) polarized fields support single frequency surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) localized at the interface of a metal and a dielectric. Metals are typically dispersive, i.e. the dielectric function depends on the frequency. We prove the bifurcation of localized SPPs in dispersive media in the presence of a cubic nonlinearity and provide an asymptotic expansion of the solution and the frequency. The problem is reduced to a system of nonlinear differential equations in one spatial dimension by assuming a plane wave dependence in the direction tangential to the (flat) interfaces. The number of interfaces is arbitrary and the nonlinear system is solved in a subspace of functions with the $H^1$-Sobolev regularity in each material layer. The corresponding linear system is an operator pencil in the frequency parameter due to the material dispersion. Because of the TM-polarization the problem cannot be reduced to a scalar equation. The studied bifurcation occurs at a simple isolated eigenvalue of the pencil. For geometries consisting of two or three homogeneous layers we provide explicit conditions on the existence of eigenvalues and on their simpleness and isolatedness. Real frequencies are shown to exist in the nonlinear setting in the case of PT-symmetric materials. We also apply a finite difference numerical method to the nonlinear system and compute bifurcating curves.

Well-Posedness and Exponential Stability of Nonlinear Maxwell Equations for Dispersive Materials with Interface

In this paper we consider an abstract Cauchy problem for a Maxwell system modelling electromagnetic fields in the presence of an interface between optical media. The electric polarization is in general time-delayed and nonlinear, turning the macroscopic Maxwell equations into a system of nonlinear integro-differential equations. Within the framework of evolutionary equations, we obtain well-posedness in function spaces exponentially weighted in time and of different spatial regularity and formulate various conditions on the material functions, leading to exponential stability on a bounded domain.

Eigenvalue Bifurcation in Doubly Nonlinear Problems with an Application to Surface Plasmon Polaritons

We consider a class of generally non-self-adjoint eigenvalue problems which are nonlinear in the solution as well as in the eigenvalue parameter ("doubly" nonlinear). We prove a bifurcation result from simple isolated eigenvalues of the linear problem using a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction and provide an expansion of both the nonlinear eigenvalue and the solution. We further prove that if the linear eigenvalue is real and the nonlinear problem $\mathcal P\mathcal T$-symmetric, then the bifurcating nonlinear eigenvalue remains real. These general results are then applied in the context of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), i.e. localized solutions for the nonlinear Maxwell's equations in the presence of one or more interfaces between dielectric and metal layers. We obtain the existence of transverse electric SPPs in certain $\mathcal P\mathcal T$-symmetric configurations.

Rigorous Envelope Approximation for Interface Wave-Packets in Maxwell's Equations with 2D Localization

We study transverse magnetic (vector valued) wave-packets in the time dependent Kerr nonlinear Maxwell's equations at the interface of two inhomogeneous dielectrics with an instantaneous material response. The resulting model is quasilinear. The problem is solved on each side of the interface and the fields are coupled via natural interface conditions. The wave-packet is localized at the interface and propagates in the tangential direction. For a slowly modulated envelope approximation the nonlinear Schrödinger equation is formally derived as an amplitude equation for the envelope. We rigorously justify the approximation in a Sobolev space norm on the corresponding asymptotically large time intervals. The well-posedness result for the quasilinear Maxwell problem builds on the local theory of [R. Schnaubelt und M. Spitz, Local wellposedness of quasilinear Maxwell equations with conservative interface conditions, \textit{Commun. Math. Sci.}, accepted, 2022] and extends this to asymptotically large time intervals for small data using an involved bootstrapping argument.

A quasilinear transmission problem with application to Maxwell equations with a divergence-free $\mathcal D$-field

Maxwell equations in the absence of free charges require initial data with a divergence free displacement field $\mathcal D$. In materials in which the dependence $\mathcal D=\mathcal D(\mathcal E)$ is nonlinear the quasilinear problem $\nabla\cdot\mathcal D(\mathcal E)=0$ is hence to be solved. In many applications, e.g. in the modelling of wave-packets, an approximative asymptotic ansatz of the electric field $\mathcal E$ is used, which satisfies this divergence condition at $t=0$ only up to a small residual. We search then for a small correction of the ansatz to enforce $\nabla\cdot\mathcal D(\mathcal E)=0$ at $t=0$ and choose this correction in the form of a gradient field. In the usual case of a power type nonlinearity in $\mathcal D(\mathcal E)$ this leads to the sum of the Laplace and $p$-Laplace operators. We also allow for the medium to consist of two different materials so that a transmission problem across an interface is produced. We prove the existence of the correction term for a general class of nonlinearities and provide regularity estimates for its derivatives, independent of the $L^2$-norm of the original ansatz. In this way, when applied to the wave-packet setting, the correction term is indeed asymptotically smaller than the original ansatz. We also provide numerical experiments to support our analysis.

Justification of the Asymptotic Coupled Mode Approximation of Out-of-Plane Gap Solitons in Maxwell Equations

In periodic media gap solitons with frequencies inside a spectral gap but close to a spectral band can be formally approximated by a slowly varying envelope ansatz. The ansatz is based on the linear Bloch waves at the edge of the band and on effective coupled mode equations (CMEs) for the envelopes. We provide a rigorous justification of such CME asymptotics in two-dimensional photonic crystals described by the Kerr nonlinear Maxwell system. We use a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction procedure and a nested fixed point argument in the Bloch variables. The theorem provides an error estimate in $H^2(\mathbb R^2)$ between the exact solution and the envelope approximation. The results justify the formal and numerical CME-approximation in [Dohnal and Dörfler, Multiscale Model. Simul., p. 162-191, 11 (2013)].

NLS approximation for wavepackets in periodic cubically nonlinear wave problems in $\mathbb{R}^d$

The dynamics of single carrier wavepackets in nonlinear wave problems over periodic structures can be often formally approximated by the constant coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) as an effective model for the wavepacket envelope. We provide a detailed proof of this approximation result for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GP) and a semilinear wave equation, both with periodic coefficients in $\mathbb{N}\ni d$ spatial dimensions and with cubic nonlinearities. The proof is carried out in Bloch expansion variables with estimates in an $L^1$-type norm, which translates to an estimate of the supremum norm of the error. The regularity required from the periodic coefficients in order to ensure a small residual and a small error is discussed. We also present a numerical example in two spatial dimensions confirming the approximation result and presenting an approximate traveling solitary wave in the GP with periodic coefficients.

A Bloch wave numerical scheme for scattering problems in periodic wave-guides

We present a new numerical scheme to solve the Helmholtz equation in a wave-guide. We consider a medium that is bounded in the $x_2$-direction, unbounded in the $x_1$-direction and $\varepsilon$-periodic for large $|x_1|$, allowing different media on the left and on the right. We suggest a new numerical method that is based on a truncation of the domain and the use of Bloch wave ansatz functions in radiation boxes. We prove the existence and a stability estimate for the infinite dimensional version of the proposed problem. The scheme is tested on several interfaces of homogeneous and periodic media and it is used to investigate the effect of negative refraction at the interface of a photonic crystal with a positive effective refractive index.

Justification of the Coupled Mode Asymptotics for Localized Wavepackets in the Periodic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We consider wavepackets composed of two modulated carrier Bloch waves with opposite group velocities in the one dimensional periodic Nonlinear Schroedinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation. These can be approximated by first order coupled mode equations (CMEs) for the two slowly varying envelopes. Under a suitably selected periodic perturbation of the periodic structure the CMEs possess a spectral gap of the corresponding spatial operator and allow families of exponentially localized solitary waves parametrized by velocity. This leads to a family of approximate solitary waves in the periodic nonlinear Schroedinger equation. Besides a formal derivation of the CMEs a rigorous justification of the approximation and an error estimate in the supremum norm are provided. Several numerical tests corroborate the analysis.

Bifurcation of Nonlinear Bloch Waves from the Spectrum in the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation

We rigorously analyze the bifurcation of stationary so called nonlinear Bloch waves (NLBs) from the spectrum in the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with a periodic potential, in arbitrary space dimensions. These are solutions which can be expressed as finite sums of quasi-periodic functions, and which in a formal asymptotic expansion are obtained from solutions of the so called algebraic coupled mode equations. Here we justify this expansion by proving the existence of NLBs and estimating the error of the formal asymptotics. The analysis is illustrated by numerical bifurcation diagrams, mostly in 2D. In addition, we illustrate some relations of NLBs to other classes of solutions of the GP equation, in particular to so called out--of--gap solitons and truncated NLBs, and present some numerical experiments concerning the stability of these solutions.

Ground States of a Nonlinear Curl-Curl Problem in Cylindrically Symmetric Media

We consider the nonlinear curl-curl problem $\nabla\times\nabla\times U + V(x) U= Γ(x)|U|^{p-1}U$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ related to the nonlinear Maxwell equations for monochromatic fields. We search for solutions as minimizers (ground states) of the corresponding energy functional defined on subspaces (defocusing case) or natural constraints (focusing case) of $H(\mathrm{curl};\mathbb{R}^3)$. Under a cylindrical symmetry assumption on the functions $V$ and $Γ$ the variational problem can be posed in a symmetric subspace of $H(\mathrm{curl};\mathbb{R}^3)$. For a strongly defocusing case $\mathrm{esssup}\, Γ<0$ with large negative values of $Γ$ at infinity we obtain ground states by the direct minimization method. For the focusing case $\mathrm{essinf}\, Γ>0$ the concentration compactness principle produces ground states under the assumption that zero lies outside the spectrum of the linear operator $\nabla \times \nabla \times +V(x)$. Examples of cylindrically symmetric functions $V$ are provided for which this holds.

Surface Gap Soliton Ground States for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation $(-Δ+V(x))u = Γ(x) |u|^{p-1}u$, $x\in \R^n$ with $V(x) = V_1(x) χ_{\{x_1>0\}}(x)+V_2(x) χ_{\{x_1<0\}}(x)$ and $Γ(x) = Γ_1(x) χ_{\{x_1>0\}}(x)+Γ_2(x) χ_{\{x_1<0\}}(x)$ and with $V_1, V_2, Γ_1, Γ_2$ periodic in each coordinate direction. This problem describes the interface of two periodic media, e.g. photonic crystals. We study the existence of ground state $H^1$ solutions (surface gap soliton ground states) for $0<\min σ(-Δ+V)$. Using a concentration compactness argument, we provide an abstract criterion for the existence based on ground state energies of each periodic problem (with $V\equiv V_1, Γ\equiv Γ_1$ and $V\equiv V_2, Γ\equiv Γ_2$) as well as a more practical criterion based on ground states themselves. Examples of interfaces satisfying these criteria are provided. In 1D it is shown that, surprisingly, the criteria can be reduced to conditions on the linear Bloch waves of the operators $-\tfrac{d^2}{dx^2} +V_1(x)$ and $-\tfrac{d^2}{dx^2} +V_2(x)$.

Families of Surface Gap Solitons and their Stability via the Numerical Evans Function Method

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a linear periodic potential and a nonlinearity coefficient $Γ$ with a discontinuity supports stationary localized solitary waves with frequencies inside spectral gaps, so called surface gap solitons (SGSs). We compute families of 1D SGSs using the arclength continuation method for a range of values of the jump in $Γ$. Using asymptotics, we show that when the frequency parameter converges to the bifurcation gap edge, the size of the allowed jump in $Γ$ converges to 0 for SGSs centered at any $x_c\in \R$. Linear stability of SGSs is next determined via the numerical Evans function method, in which the stable and unstable manifolds corresponding to the 0 solution of the linearized spectral ODE problem need to be evolved. Zeros of the Evans function coincide with eigenvalues of the linearized operator. Far from the SGS center the manifolds are spanned by exponentially decaying/increasing Bloch functions. Evolution of the manifolds suffers from stiffness but a numerically stable formulation is possible in the exterior algebra formulation and with the use of Grassmanian preserving ODE integrators. Eigenvalues with positive real part above a small constant are then detected using the complex argument principle and a contour parallel to the imaginary axis. The location of real eigenvalues is found via a straightforward evaluation of the Evans function along the real axis and several complex eigenvalues are located using Müller's method. The numerical Evans function method is described in detail. Our results show the existence of both unstable and stable SGSs (possibly with a weak instability), where stability is obtained even for some SGSs centered in the domain half with the less focusing nonlinearity. Direct simulations of the PDE for selected SGS examples confirm the results of Evans function computations.

Coupled Mode Equations and Gap Solitons for the 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a non-separable periodic potential

Gap solitons near a band edge of a spatially periodic nonlinear PDE can be formally approximated by solutions of Coupled Mode Equations (CMEs). Here we study this approximation for the case of the 2D Periodic Nonlinear Schrödinger / Gross-Pitaevskii Equation with a non-separable potential of finite contrast. We show that unlike in the case of separable potentials [T. Dohnal, D. Pelinovsky, and G. Schneider, J. Nonlin. Sci. {\bf 19}, 95--131 (2009)] the CME derivation has to be carried out in Bloch rather than physical coordinates. Using the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction we then give a rigorous justification of the CMEs as an asymptotic model for reversible non-degenerate gap solitons and even potentials and provide $H^s$ estimates for this approximation. The results are confirmed by numerical examples including some new families of CMEs and gap solitons absent for separable potentials.

Perfectly Matched Layers for Coupled Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations with Mixed Derivatives

This paper constructs perfectly matched layers (PML) for a system of 2D Coupled Nonlinear Schrödinger equations with mixed derivatives which arises in the modeling of gap solitons in nonlinear periodic structures with a non-separable linear part. The PML construction is performed in Laplace Fourier space via a modal analysis and can be viewed as a complex change of variables. The mixed derivatives cause the presence of waves with opposite phase and group velocities, which has previously been shown to cause instability of layer equations in certain types of hyperbolic problems. Nevertheless, here the PML is stable if the absorption function $σ$ lies below a specified threshold. The PML construction and analysis are carried out for the linear part of the system. Numerical tests are then performed in both the linear and nonlinear regimes checking convergence of the error with respect to the layer width and showing that the PML performs well even in many nonlinear simulations.

Localized Modes of the Linear Periodic Schrödinger Operator with a Nonlocal Perturbation

We consider the existence of localized modes corresponding to eigenvalues of the periodic Schrödinger operator $-\partial_x^2+ V(x)$ with an interface. The interface is modeled by a jump either in the value or the derivative of $V(x)$ and, in general, does not correspond to a localized perturbation of the perfectly periodic operator. The periodic potentials on each side of the interface can, moreover, be different. As we show, eigenvalues can only occur in spectral gaps. We pose the eigenvalue problem as a $C^1$ gluing problem for the fundamental solutions (Bloch functions) of the second order ODEs on each side of the interface. The problem is thus reduced to finding matchings of the ratio functions $R_\pm=\frac{ψ_\pm'(0)}{ψ_\pm(0)}$, where $ψ_\pm$ are those Bloch functions that decay on the respective half-lines. These ratio functions are analyzed with the help of the Prüfer transformation. The limit values of $R_\pm$ at band edges depend on the ordering of Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues at gap edges. We show that the ordering can be determined in the first two gaps via variational analysis for potentials satisfying certain monotonicity conditions. Numerical computations of interface eigenvalues are presented to corroborate the analysis.
