$K\toπγ^*γ^*$ transitions at leading order and beyond

The transition amplitude of a kaon to a pion and two off-shell photons is studied. First, it is computed at leading order (one-loop level) of the Chiral Perturbation Theory expansion. Explicit analytical results for the leading-order amplitude are presented, constituting the first complete calculation for the doubly off-shell case. Subsequently, it is reevaluated by employing a refined diagrammatic notation and a generic ansatz incorporating effects beyond leading order. The dependence on the underlying $KπPP$ vertex parameters is analyzed. This offers valuable insights into amplitude properties and allows inclusion of unitarity corrections from $K\to3π$, yielding the complete $K\toπγ^*γ^*$ amplitude structure. Both the charged and neutral channels are treated in parallel. The presented results provide crucial input for phenomenological studies of related rare decays like $K\toπ\ell^+\ell^-[γ]$ or $K\toπ\ell_1^+\ell_1^-\ell_2^+\ell_2^-$ and support ongoing precision measurements at experiments like NA62 at CERN. These results may also find application in other related processes, including $η^{(\prime)}$ decays.

Proposal of the KOTO II experiment

The KOTO II experiment is proposed to measure the branching ratio of the decay $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ at J-PARC. With a beamline to extract long-lived neutral kaons at 5 degrees from a production target, the single event sensitivity of the decay is $8.5\times 10^{-13}$, which is much smaller than the Standard Model prediction $3\times 10^{-11}$. This allows searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model and the first discovery of the decay with a significance exceeding $5σ$. As the only experiment proposed in the world dedicated to rare kaon decays, KOTO II will be indispensable in the quest for a complete understanding of flavor dynamics in the quark sector. Moreover, by combining efforts from the kaon community worldwide, we plan to develop the KOTO II detector further and expand the physics reach of the experiment to include measurements of the branching ratio of the $K_L\toπ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ decays, studies of other $K_L$ decays, and searches for dark photons, axions, and axion-like particles. KOTO II will therefore obtain a comprehensive understanding of $K_L$ decays, providing further constraints on new physics scenarios with existing $K^+$ results.

Neutral-pion decay into an electron-positron pair: A review and update

This work aims to review several aspects of the current status of the rare $π^0\to e^+e^-$ decay. A particular emphasis is made on radiative corrections and detailed interpretation of related quantities, some numbers appearing in the literature are updated, and the connection with the Dalitz decay, $π^0\to e^+e^-γ$, is discussed. This comes timely as it is aligned with an announcement of a preliminary result of a new branching-ratio measurement done by the NA62 Collaboration, which brings new light into an earlier-reported discrepancy between the Standard Model prediction and the (until-recently latest) precise KTeV result.

The three-pion $K$-matrix at NLO in ChPT

The three-particle $K$-matrix, $\mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df},3}$, is a scheme-dependent quantity that parametrizes short-range three-particle interactions in the relativistic-field-theory three-particle finite-volume formalism. In this work, we compute its value for systems of three pions in all isospin channels through next-to-leading order in Chiral Perturbation Theory, generalizing previous work done at maximum isospin. We obtain analytic expressions through quadratic order (or cubic order, in the case of zero isospin) in the expansion about the three-pion threshold.

Three-pion scattering: From the chiral Lagrangian to the lattice

In recent years, detailed studies of three-pion systems have become possible in lattice QCD. This has in turn led to interest in 3-to-3 scattering of pions in the chiral perturbation theory framework. In addition to being an interesting study of multi-meson dynamics in its own right, it provides a valuable handle on finite-volume effects and the pion mass dependence, thus complementing the lattice results. I present our derivation of the next-to-leading order amplitude for this process, as well as its conversion into the three-particle K-matrix, which enables direct comparison to the lattice. Our results significantly improve the agreement between theory and lattice, which was poor when only leading-order effects were taken into account.

Radiative Corrections: From Medium to High Energy Experiments

Radiative corrections are crucial for modern high-precision physics experiments, and are an area of active research in the experimental and theoretical community. Here we provide an overview of the state of the field of radiative corrections with a focus on several topics: lepton-proton scattering, QED corrections in deep-inelastic scattering, and in radiative light-hadron decays. Particular emphasis is placed on the two-photon exchange, believed to be responsible for the proton form-factor discrepancy, and associated Monte-Carlo codes. We encourage the community to continue developing theoretical techniques to treat radiative corrections, and perform experimental tests of these corrections.

The isospin-3 three-particle $K$-matrix at NLO in ChPT

The three-particle $K$-matrix, $\mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df},3}$, is a scheme-dependent quantity that parametrizes short-range three-particle interactions in the relativistic-field-theory three-particle finite-volume formalism. In this work, we compute its value for systems of three pions at maximal isospin through next-to-leading order (NLO) in Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). We compare the values to existing lattice QCD results and find that the agreement between lattice QCD data and ChPT in the first two coefficients of the threshold expansion of $\mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df},3}$ is significantly improved with respect to leading order once NLO effects are incorporated.

Radiative modes $K^+\toπ^+γ^*γ^{(*)}$ and the $K^+\toπ^+4e$ decay

We discuss radiative transitions of a charged kaon to a pion and two photons. In particular, we have a closer look at radiative corrections for the $K^+\toπ^+\ell^+\ell^-$ decays and present the branching ratio of the $K^+\toπ^+e^+e^-e^+e^-$ process calculated for the first time at leading order in the Standard Model.

Standard Model estimate of $K^+\toπ^+4e$ branching ratio

The branching ratio of the $K^+\toπ^+e^+e^-e^+e^-$ ($K^+\toπ^+4e$) decay is calculated at leading order in the Standard Model. The dominance of the neutral-pion pole determines the overall branching ratio to be $B(K^+\toπ^+4e)=B(K^+\toπ^+π^0)B(π^0\to4e)\approx7.0(3)\times10^{-6}$. The significance of this contribution is very much concentrated in the context of the whole available phase space, throughout most of which the one-photon-exchange topology is prevalent in turn. It is thus interesting to present branching ratios for only parts of the allowed kinematical region. We find, for instance, $B(K^+\toπ^+4e,\,m_{4e}>150\,\text{MeV})=6.0(6)\times10^{-11}$.

Six-meson amplitude in QCD-like theories

We calculate the relativistic six-meson scattering amplitude at low energy within the framework of QCD-like theories with $n$ degenerate quark flavors at next-to-leading order in the chiral counting. We discuss the cases of complex, real and pseudo-real representations, i.e. with global symmetry and breaking patterns $\text{SU}(n)\times\text{SU}(n)/\text{SU}(n)$ (extending the QCD case), $\text{SU}(2n)/\text{SO}(2n)$, and $\text{SU}(2n)/\text{Sp}(2n)$. In case of the one-particle-irreducible part, we obtain analytical expressions in terms of 10 six-meson subamplitudes based on the flavor and group structures. We extend on our previous results obtained within the framework of the $\text{O}(N+1)/\text{O}(N)$ non-linear sigma model, with $N$ being the number of meson flavors. This work allows for studying a number of properties of six-particle amplitudes at one-loop level.

Snowmass 2021 White Paper: Charged lepton flavor violation in the tau sector

Charged lepton flavor violation has long been recognized as unambiguous signature of New Physics. Here we describe the physics capabilities and discovery potential of New Physics models with charged lepton flavor violation in the tau sector as its experimental signature. Current experimental status from the B-Factory experiments BaBar, Belle and Belle II, and future prospects at Super Tau Charm Factory, LHC, EIC and FCC-ee experiments to discover New Physics via charged lepton flavor violation in the tau sector are discussed in detail. Submitted to the Proceedings of the US Community Study on the Future of Particle Physics (Snowmass 2021)

Three-pion scattering in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We present the results on the relativistic six-pion scattering amplitude at low energy, calculated at $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ within the framework of the massive $\text{O}(N)$ nonlinear sigma model extended to the next-to-leading order in the chiral counting. For $N=3$, this approach corresponds to the two(-quark)-flavor Chiral Perturbation Theory. We also present the expressions for the pion mass, pion decay constant and the four-pion amplitude in the case of $N$ (meson) flavors at $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$.

Six-pion amplitude

Within the framework of the massive O($N$) nonlinear sigma model extended to the next-to-leading order in the chiral counting (for $N=3$ corresponding to the two(-quark)-flavor Chiral Perturbation Theory), we calculate the relativistic six-pion scattering amplitude at low energy up to and including terms $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$. Results for the pion mass, decay constant and the four-pion amplitude in the case of $N$ (meson) flavors at $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ are also presented.

Radiative corrections for the decay $Σ^0\toΛe^+e^-$

Electromagnetic form factors serve to explore the intrinsic structure of nucleons and their strangeness partners. For the decay $Σ^0\toΛe^+e^-$, due to limited phase space, the effects caused by the Sigma-to-Lambda transition form factors compete with the QED radiative corrections. These corrections are addressed in the present work, evaluated beyond the soft-photon approximation, i.e., over the whole range of the Dalitz plot and with no restrictions on the energy of the radiative photon.

Lepton-flavour violation in hadronic tau decays and $\ell$-$τ$ conversion in nuclei

Within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework, with operators up to dimension 6, we perform a model-independent analysis of the lepton-flavour-violating processes involving tau leptons. Namely, we study hadronic tau decays and $\ell$-$τ$ conversion in nuclei ($\ell=e,μ$). Based on available experimental limits, we establish constraints on the Wilson coefficients of the operators contributing to these processes. The related information from Belle II and foreseen future experiments can be easily incorporated into the resulting framework.

Radiative corrections for the decay $Σ^0\toΛe^+e^-$

Electromagnetic form factors serve to explore the intrinsic structure of nucleons and their strangeness partners. With electron scattering at low energies the electromagnetic moments and radii of nucleons can be deduced. The corresponding experiments for hyperons are limited because of the unstable nature of the hyperons. Only for one process this turns to an advantage: the decay of the neutral Sigma hyperon to a Lambda hyperon and a real or virtual photon. Due to limited phase space the effects caused by the Sigma-to-Lambda transition form factors compete with the QED radiative corrections for the decay $Σ^0\toΛe^+e^-$. These QED corrections are addressed in the present work, evaluated beyond the soft-photon approximation, i.e., over the whole range of the Dalitz plot and with no restrictions on the energy of the radiative photon.

Radiative corrections for Dalitz decays of $π^0$, $η^{(\prime)}$ and $Σ^0$

We briefly summarize current experimental and theoretical results on the $π^0$ Dalitz decay, including the new value for the ratio $R={Γ(π^0\to e^+e^-γ(γ))}/{Γ(π^0\toγγ)}=11.978(6)\times10^{-3}$, which is by two orders of magnitude more precise than the current PDG average. Furthermore, we discuss radiative corrections for the Dalitz decays $η^{(\prime)}\to\ell^+\ell^-γ$ beyond the soft-photon approximation. The corrections inevitably depend on the $η^{(\prime)}\toγ^*γ^{(*)}$ transition form factors. Finally, we present (inclusive) radiative corrections for the $Σ^0\toΛe^+e^-$ decay, evaluated as well beyond the soft-photon approximation, i.e., over the whole range of the Dalitz plot and with no restrictions on the energy of the radiative photon. Here, we also calculate explicitly the 1$γ$IR contribution and the correction to the $Σ^0Λγ$ vertex and confirm that these can be neglected.
