Impact of Open Heavy-Flavour Production on nCTEQ Nuclear PDFs

We present nCTEQ26OHF, a global analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) within the nCTEQ framework. In this analysis, constrasting the main nCTEQ26 release, we replace the Crystal-Ball function, an effective matrix element that is used in nCTEQ26 for open heavy-flavor (OHF) and quarkonium production, by an SACOT GM-VFNS calculation for the OHF predictions. The resulting nCTEQ26OHF PDFs are compatible with the nCTEQ26 PDFs within uncertainties, implying that the OHF data alone provide ample constraint.

PineAPPLv1: fast and flexible theory predictions for present and future colliders

We present PineAPPLv1, a library designed to provide accurate and flexible interpolation tables of partonic cross sections that can be convolved with parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) for the fast evaluation of high-energy physical observables. The core feature of the new release is the support of multiple convolutions involving initial- and final-state hadronic particles, with any polarisation, that are associated with PDFs and FFs. The library simultaneously supports polarised and unpolarised distributions that obey space-like or time-like evolution, and is developed for an arbitrary number of them, even if physical processes typically only require a few. Control of scale choices when more than one scale characterises a scattering process is also possible. We describe the technical details of the new representation of interpolation coefficients stored in the grid, and we demonstrate the capabilities of the library in a few phenomenological cases of interest. Specifically, we compute predictions for single-inclusive pion production in unpolarised and polarised proton-proton collisions and in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. We show how, in each case, PDF, FF, and scale uncertainties compare to each other and highlight the potential of PineAPPL as an essential ingredient for precision physics at current and future colliders.

Conversion of photons to dileptons in the Kroll-Wada and parton shower approaches

The study of dileptons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions provides critical insights into the properties of the quark-gluon plasma and the thermal radiation emitted throughout its evolution. In the low-mass region, dileptons originate from both direct photon conversion and hadronic decays, with the Kroll-Wada equation traditionally used to relate direct real and direct virtual photon production. In this work, we explore the possibility of using parton shower event generators to model this conversion process, leveraging their unitary treatment of internal photon conversions that naturally preserves normalisation, as well as their ability to incorporate higher-order corrections, recoil kinematics, and realistic experimental selection criteria. We compare the Kroll-Wada approach to simulations using the Pythia8 simple shower, the Vincia sector shower, and the POWHEG shower matched NLO event generator. Our results reveal that the parton shower approach offers improved accuracy in describing the dilepton spectrum, particularly towards larger invariant masses where phase-space suppression effects become relevant.

Dijet Photoproduction in POWHEG BOX

Photoproduction processes have gained a renewed interest following the approval of the EIC, making their implementation in Monte Carlo event generators highly desirable. We present recent efforts to develop a POWHEG BOX extension simulating dijet production from direct and resolved photons at next-to-leading order in QCD merged to parton showers, employing the Weizsäcker-Williams Approximation. It will facilitate event generation for collisions involving leptons, protons and heavy ions. Thus, it will be particularly useful for the study of ultra-peripheral collisions at CERN's LHC and for making predictions relevant to BNL's EIC.

Prompt photon production with two jets in POWHEG

Prompt photon production is highly sensitive to the distribution of quarks and gluons in free protons and nuclei and an important baseline for phenomenological studies of the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. In this paper, we present a new calculation of the production of prompt photons in association with two jets at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics matched to parton showers with the POWHEG method. This calculation extends our previous analysis of prompt photon production in association with one jet using \texttt{POWHEG+PYTHIA}. We investigate the role of the parton shower as an alternative description of the parton-to-photon fragmentation process and analyse correlations between the photon and the jets. In addition, we compare \texttt{POWHEG+PYTHIA} with \texttt{POWHEG+HERWIG} predictions, experimental ATLAS data for isolated photons, and a perturbative calculation at next-to-next-to-leading order. Both parton shower models bring the next-to-leading order prediction into good agreement with the experimental data and the next-to-next-to-leading order calculation.

PineAPPL Grids of Open Heavy-Flavor Production in the GM-VFNS

Many next-to-leading order QCD predictions are available through Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Usually, multiple CPU hours are needed to calculate predictions at a required precision, which is unfeasible for global PDF analyses. This problem is solved by a process known as gridding: The values of the hard-scattering cross-section are calculated only once with the MC program, and then interpolated and stored in look-up tables (grids) of the kinematical variables. To obtain the physical predictions, they are convolved with the PDFs (e.g. during the fitting stage in a PDF global analysis), which takes a tiny fraction of the time needed to calculate the MC results. This is possible with PineAPPL, a library tackling the aforementioned process of grid creation and convolution. In this work, we use PineAPPL to grid the predictions for open heavy-flavor production in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme (GM-VFNS). In the GM-VFNS, the differential cross-section interpolates between the fixed-flavor-number scheme (FFNS) and the zero-mass variable-flavor-number scheme (ZM-VFNS). These are each only valid in different kinematical regions, in which the GM-VFNS cross-section reproduces the FFNS and ZM-VFNS as the limiting cases of high energies and small masses, respectively. Better than permille agreement is achieved between the grids and the MC predictions, while at the same time not substantially increasing the time of the MC calculations.

Di-electron production at the LHC: Unravelling virtual-photon and heavy-flavour contributions

The production of virtual photons is a very sensitive probe of the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. As they are experimentally detected by lepton pairs, they suffer from a large background arising from hadron decays. Light-flavour hadrons dominate at low invariant masses below $m_{ee}\sim0.5$ GeV and heavy flavours above. These contributions must therefore also be taken into account in experimental analyses at the LHC. In this paper, we calculate the direct contribution from virtual photons produced in the Drell-Yan process with an additional jet in POWHEG and find that it is significant at low invariant masses. We also simulate the background contributions from $c\bar c$ and $b \bar b$ production with POWHEG and quantify the theoretical uncertainties due to variations of the perturbative scales and parton distribution functions. We find larger relative and absolute uncertainties for the lighter $c$ quarks than for heavier $b$ quarks.

Resonance-aware NLOPS matching for off-shell $t\bar t+tW$ production with semileptonic decays

The increasingly high accuracy of top-quark studies at the LHC calls for a theoretical description of $t\bar t$ production and decay in terms of exact matrix elements for the full $2\to 6$ process that includes the off-shell production and the chain decays of $t\bar t$ and $tW$ intermediate states, together with their quantum interference. Corresponding NLO QCD calculations matched to parton showers are available for the case of dileptonic channels and are implemented in the bb4l Monte Carlo generator, which is based on the resonance-aware POWHEG method. In this paper, we present the first NLOPS predictions of this kind for the case of semileptonic channels. In this context, the interplay of off-shell $t\bar t+tW$ production with various other QCD and electroweak subprocesses that yield the same semileptonic final state is discussed in detail. On the technical side, we improve the resonance-aware POWHEG procedure by means of new resonance histories based on matrix elements, which enable a realistic separation of $t\bar t$ and $tW$ contributions. Moreover, we introduce a general approach which makes it possible to avoid certain spurious terms that arise from the perturbative expansion of decay widths in any off-shell higher-order calculation, and which are large enough to jeopardise physical finite-width effects. These methods are implemented in a new version of the bb4l Monte Carlo generator, which is applicable to all dileptonic and semileptonic channels, and can be extended to fully hadronic channels. The presented results include a NLOPS comparison of off-shell against on-shell $t\bar t+tW$ production and decay, where we highlight various non-trivial aspects related to NLO and parton-shower radiation in leptonic and hadronic top decays.

Hadroproduction of four top quarks in the POWHEG BOX

We present a new Monte Carlo event generator for the hadronic production of four top quarks in the POWHEG BOX framework. Besides the dominant next-to-leading order QCD corrections at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^5)$ we also include all subleading electroweak productions channels at leading-order accuracy. We validate our theoretical predictions by comparing to parton-shower matched predictions obtained within the MC@NLO framework for stable top quarks. Furthermore, we investigate in detail the various sources of theoretical uncertainties. Finally, we investigate a single lepton plus jets signature to study for the first time the impact of the electroweak production modes as well as spin-correlation effects at the fiducial level.

Non-resonant and offshell effects in top-pair observables

In these proceedings we investigate the impact of offshell and non-resonant contributions to kinematic distributions in $t\bar{t}$ final states by comparing several next-to-leading-order~(NLO) + parton shower (PS) generators which differ in the way they model these effects. We focus on distributions traditionally used for measurements of fundamental top-quark properties such as its Yukawa coupling or its mass. Given the current experimental uncertainties, we find that such effects can have relatively large impact on the shape of these distributions and are thus mandatory for accurate measurements.

Electroweak $t \bar t$ hadroproduction in the presence of heavy $Z'$ and $W'$ bosons at NLO QCD in POWHEG

We extend and improve upon our previous calculation of electroweak top-quark pair hadroproduction in extensions of the Standard Model with extra heavy neutral and charged spin-1 resonances. In particular, we allow for flavour-non-diagonal $Z'$ couplings and take into account non-resonant production in the SM and beyond including the contributions with $t$-channel $W$ and $W'$ bosons. All amplitudes are generated using the Recola2 package. As in our previous work, we include NLO QCD corrections and consistently match to parton showers with the POWHEG method fully taking into account the interference effects between SM and new physics amplitudes. We consider the Sequential Standard Model, the Topcolour model, as well as the Third Family Hypercharge Model featuring non-flavour-diagonal $Z'$ couplings which has been proposed recently to explain the anomalies in $B$ decays. We present numerical results for $t \bar t$ cross sections at hadron colliders with a centre-of-mass energy up to 100 TeV.

Extracting the Top-Quark Width from Non-Resonant Production

In the context of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, the relationship between the top-quark mass and width ($Γ_t$) has been precisely calculated. However, the uncertainty from current direct measurements of the width is nearly 50%. A new approach for directly measuring the top-quark width using events away from the resonance peak is presented. By using an orthogonal dataset to traditional top-quark width extractions, this new method may enable significant improvements in the experimental sensitivity in a method combination. Recasting a recent ATLAS differential cross section measurement, we find $Γ_t$ = 1.28 $\pm$ 0.30 GeV (1.33 $\pm$ 0.29 GeV expected), providing the most precise direct measurement of the width.

State of the art POWHEG generators for top mass measurements at the LHC

We study the theoretical uncertainties in the determination of the top-quark mass using next-to-leading-order (NLO) generators, that describe the top-quark decay at different levels of accuracy, interfaced to parton showers (PS). Specifically we consider one generator that implements NLO corrections only in the production dynamics, one that also takes them into account in the top-quark decay in the narrow width approximation (NWA) and one that implements them exactly, including finite-width and interference effects. We aim at assessing the errors in top-mass determinations of purely theoretical origin. We do so by measuring relative peak position shifts of $Wb$-jet mass distributions. Besides the theoretical errors due to the use of less accurate NLO+PS generators, we also explore uncertainties related to shower and modelling of non-perturbative effects by comparing the results obtained by interfacing our generators to both Pythia and Herwig shower Monte Carlos (SMCs).

NLO matching for $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ production with massive $b$ quarks

Measurements of $t\bar{t} H$ production in the $H\to b\bar{b}$ channel depend in a critical way on the theoretical uncertainty associated with the irreducible QCD $t\bar{t}+b$-jet background. We introduce a new $pp\to t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ POWHEG generator in the 4F scheme based on POWHEG-BOX-RES and on OpenLoops for fast evaluation of the scattering amplitudes. We present predictions and uncertainties for $t\bar{t}+b$-jet observables at the 13 TeV LHC. We also consider theoretical uncertainties related to the POWHEG matching method and to the parton shower (PS) modelling, with emphasis on $g\to b\bar{b}$ splittings. In general, matching and shower uncertainties turn out to be remarkably small. This is confirmed by a consistent comparison against SHERPA+OpenLoops.

New NLOPS predictions for $\boldsymbol{t\bar{t}+b}$-jet production at the LHC

Measurements of $t\bar{t} H$ production in the $H\to b\bar{b}$ channel depend in a critical way on the theoretical uncertainty associated with the irreducible $t\bar{t}+b$-jet background. In this paper, analysing the various topologies that account for $b$-jet production in association with a $t\bar{t}$ pair, we demonstrate that the process at hand is largely driven by final-state $g\to b\bar{b}$ splittings. We also show that in five-flavour simulations based on $t\bar{t}+$multi-jet merging $b$-jet production is mostly driven by the parton shower, while matrix elements play only a marginal role in the description of $g\to b\bar{b}$ splittings. Based on these observations we advocate the use of NLOPS simulations of $pp\to t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ in the four-flavour scheme, and we present a new POWHEG generator of this kind. Predictions and uncertainties for $t\bar{t}+b$-jet observables at the 13 TeV LHC are presented both for the case of stable top quarks and with spin-correlated top decays. Besides QCD scale variations we consider also theoretical uncertainties related to the POWHEG matching method and to the parton shower modelling, with emphasis on $g\to b\bar{b}$ splittings. In general, matching and shower uncertainties turn out to be remarkably small. This is confirmed also by a tuned comparison against Sherpa+OpenLoops.

Top quark modelling in POWHEG BOX

We review recent theoretical improvements of Monte Carlo event generators for top-quark pair production and decay at the LHC based on the POWHEG method. We present an event generator that implements spin correlations and off-shell effects in top-decay chains described in terms of exact matrix elements for $pp\to \ell^+ν_{\ell}\, l^-\barν_{l} \,b \,\bar b$ at order $α^4 α_s^2$, including full NLO QCD corrections and interference effects with single-top and non-resonant topologies yielding to the same final state. We then compare its predictions to previous generators that implement NLO corrections only in the top-pair production dynamics. We consider the mass distributions of the $Wj_{\rm B}$ and $\ell j_{\rm B}$ systems, proxies for direct top-mass determinations, and jet-vetoed cross section, a probe of the $Wt$ single top contribution.

An NLO+PS generator for $t\bar{t}$ and $Wt$ production and decay including non-resonant and interference effects

We present a Monte Carlo generator that implements significant theoretical improvements in the simulation of top-quark pair production and decay at the LHC. Spin correlations and off-shell effects in top-decay chains are described in terms of exact matrix elements for $p p \to \ell^+ν_{\scriptscriptstyle\ell}\, l^-\barν_{\scriptscriptstyle l} b \bar{b}$ at NLO QCD, where the leptons $\ell$ and $l$ belong to different families, and $b$ quarks are massive. Thus, the contributions from $t\bar{t}$ and $Wt$ single-top production as well as their quantum interference are fully included. Matrix elements are matched to the Pythia8 parton shower using a recently proposed method that allows for a consistent treatment of resonances in the POWHEG framework. These theoretical improvements are especially important for the interpretation of precision measurements of the top-quark mass, for single-top analyses in the $Wt$ channel, and for $t\bar{t}$ and $Wt$ backgrounds in the presence of jet vetoes or cuts that enhance off-shell effects. The new generator is based on a process-independent interface of the OpenLoops amplitude generator with the POWHEGBOX framework.

On the Treatment of Resonances in Next-to-Leading Order Calculations Matched to a Parton Shower

In this work we present a new subtraction method for next-to-leading order calculations that is particularly convenient even when narrow resonances are present. The method is particularly suitable for the implementation of next-to-leading order calculations matched to parton shower generators. It allows at the same time for the inclusion of all finite width effects, including interferences, and for a consistent treatment of resonances in the shower approach, preserving the mass of resonances near their peak. We implement our method, in a fully general and automatic way, within the POWHEG BOX framework, and illustrate it using as a test case the process of $p p \to μ^+ ν_μj_b j$, that is dominated by $t$-channel single top production.
