Quasi-topological gravity for 4-dimensional Taub-NUT, near-horizon extreme Kerr, and swirling symmetries

We classify 4-dimensional gravitational theories with integrability properties analogous to quasi-topological gravity, but for metrics with the symmetries of spherical, hyperbolic, and planar Schwarzschild and Taub-NUT solutions, their double-Wick-rotated counterparts - the B-metrics, the near-horizon extreme Kerr, and the swirling universe - and the Eguchi-Hanson instanton. These are the symmetries that allow consistent reductions (principle of symmetric criticality) with 4 Killing vectors and 3-dimensional orbits. Considering theories depending only on the Riemann tensor, we show that, for these metrics, only those with third-order equations (second-order after trivial integration) can be analytic in the Riemann tensor. We show that there is a unique theory with first-order field equations (algebraic after trivial integration, with the same integrability as general relativity) at each order in curvature and construct regular static black holes from infinite towers of these high-energy corrections to general relativity. For these theories, we obtain closed-form solutions for all the symmetries listed above, which we analyze to ensure they have a clear physical interpretation.

Double Wick rotations between symmetries of Taub-NUT, near-horizon extreme Kerr, and swirling spacetimes

We explicitly show that certain 4-dimensional infinitesimal group actions with 3-dimensional orbits are related by double Wick rotations. In particular, starting with the symmetries of the spherical/hyperbolic/planar Taub-NUT spacetimes, one can obtain symmetries of the near-horizon extreme Kerr (NHEK) geometry or swirling universe by complex analytic continuations of coordinates. Similarly, the static spherical/hyperbolic/planar symmetries (i.e., symmetries of the Schwarzschild spacetime and other A-metrics) are mapped to symmetries of the B-metrics (or Melvin spacetime). All these mappings are theory-independent -- they constitute relations among symmetries themselves, and, hence among the classes of symmetry-invariant metrics and electromagnetic field strengths, rather than among specific solutions. Consequently, finding, e.g., vacuum Taub-NUT-type solutions in a given gravitational theory automatically yields vacuum NHEK- or swirling-type solutions of that theory, with a possible extension to the electromagnetic case.

Symmetry reduction of gravitational Lagrangians

We analyze all possible symmetry reductions of Lagrangians that yield fully equivalent field equations for any 4-dimensional metric theory of gravity. Specifically, we present a complete list of infinitesimal group actions obeying the principle of symmetric criticality, identify the corresponding invariant metrics (and $l$-chains), discuss relations among them, and analyze simplifications allowed by the residual diffeomorphism group and Noether identities before and after variation of the reduced Lagrangian. We employ rigorous treatment of the symmetry reduction by Fels and Torre and use the Hicks classification of infinitesimal group actions by means of Lie algebras pairs of isometries and their isotropy subalgebras. The classification is recast in the coordinates in which the well-known symmetries and geometries are easily recognizable and relatable to each other. The paper is accompanied by a code for the symmetry reduction of Lagrangians that we developed in \texttt{xAct} package of \textsc{Mathematica}.

Propagators in AdS for higher-derivative and nonlocal gravity: Heat kernel approach

We present a new covariant method of construction of the (position space) propagators in the $N$-dimensional (Euclidean) anti-de Sitter background for any gravitational theory with the Lagrangian that is an analytic expression in the metric, curvature, and covariant derivative. We show that the propagators (in Landau gauge) for all such theories can be expressed using the heat kernels for scalars and symmetric transverse-traceless rank-2 tensors on the hyperbolic $N$-space. The latter heat kernels are constructed explicitly and shown to be directly related to the former if an improved bi-scalar representation is used. Our heat kernel approach is first tested on general relativity, where we find equivalent forms of the propagators. Then it is used to obtain explicit expressions for propagators for various higher-derivative as well as infinite-derivative/nonlocal theories of gravity. As a by-product, we also provide a new derivation of the equivalent action (correcting a mistake in the original derivation) and an extension of the quadratic action to arbitrary ${N\geq 3}$ dimensions.

Infinite derivative gravity resolves nonscalar curvature singularities

We explicitly demonstrate that the nonlocal ghost-free ultraviolet modification of general relativity (GR) known as the infinite derivative gravity (IDG) resolves nonscalar curvature singularities in exact solutions of the full theory. We analyze exact pp-wave solutions of GR and IDG describing gravitational waves generated by null radiation. Curvature of GR and IDG solutions with the same energy-momentum tensor is compared in parallel-propagated frames along timelike and null geodesics at finite values of the affine parameter. While the GR pp-wave solution contains a physically problematic nonscalar curvature singularity at the location of the source, the curvature of its IDG counterpart is finite.

On well-posedness and algebraic type of the five-dimensional charged rotating black hole with two equal-magnitude angular momenta

We study various mathematical aspects of the charged rotating black hole with two equal-magnitude angular momenta in five dimensions. We introduce a coordinate system that is regular on the horizon and in which Einstein-Maxwell equations reduce to an autonomous system of ODEs. Employing Bondi and Kruskal-like coordinates, we analyze the geometric regularity of the black hole metric at infinity and the horizon, respectively, and the well-posedness of the corresponding boundary value problem. We also study the algebraic types of the electromagnetic and curvature tensors. While outside the horizon the electromagnetic and Ricci tensors are of type D, the Weyl tensor is algebraically general. The Weyl tensor simplifies to type~II on the horizon and type~D on the bifurcation sphere. These results imply inconsistency of the metric with the Kerr--Schild form with a geodesic Kerr-Schild vector. This feature is shared by the four-dimensional Kerr-Newman metric and the vacuum Myers-Perry or charged Schwarzschild-Tangherlini geometries in arbitrary dimension, but hence not by the black hole we have considered here.

Exact gyratons in higher and infinite derivative gravity

We study solutions describing spinning null sources called gyratons in generic theories of gravity with terms that are quadratic in curvature and contain an arbitrary number of covariant derivatives. In particular, we show that the properties of pp-waves of the algebraic type III allow for extreme simplification of the field equations. It turns out that the resulting differential equations are exactly solvable due to partial decoupling and linearity of the equations. This is demonstrated explicitly by finding axially symmetric gyraton solutions in Stelle's fourth derivative gravity and the non-local gravity with an infinite number of derivatives.

Exact solutions of non-local gravity in a class of almost universal spacetimes

We study exact solutions of the infinite derivative gravity with null radiation which belong to the class of almost universal Weyl type III/N Kundt spacetimes. This class is defined by the property that all rank-2 tensors ${B_{ab}}$ constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives have traceless part of type N of the form $\mathcal{B}(\square)S_{ab}$ and the trace part constantly proportional to the metric. Here, $\mathcal{B}(\square)$ is an analytic operator and $S_{ab}$ is the traceless Ricci tensor. We show that the convoluted field equations reduce to a single non-local but linear equation, which contains only the Laplace operator $\triangle$ on 2-dimensional spaces of constant curvature. Such a non-local linear equation is always exactly solvable by eigenfunction expansion or using the heat kernel method for the non-local form-factor $\exp(-\ell^2\triangle)$ (with $\ell$ being the length scale of non-locality) as we demonstrate on several examples. We find the non-local analogues of the Aichelburg--Sexl and the Hotta--Tanaka solutions, which describe gravitational waves generated by null sources propagating in Minkowski, de Sitter, and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. They reduce to the solutions of the local theory far from the sources or in the local limit, ${\ell\to0}$. In the limit ${\ell\to\infty}$, they become conformally flat. We also discuss possible hints suggesting that the non-local solutions are regular at the locations of the sources in contrast to the local solutions; all curvature components in the natural null frame are finite and specifically the Weyl components vanish.

Almost universal spacetimes in higher-order gravity theories

We study almost universal spacetimes - spacetimes for which the field equations of any generalized gravity with the Lagrangian constructed from the metric, the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives of arbitrary order reduce to one single differential equation and one algebraic condition for the Ricci scalar. We prove that all d-dimensional Kundt spacetimes of Weyl type III and traceless Ricci type N are almost universal. Explicit examples of Weyl type II almost universal Kundt metrics are also given. The considerable simplification of the field equations of higher-order gravity theories for almost universal spacetimes is then employed to study new Weyl type II, III, and N vacuum solutions to quadratic gravity in arbitrary dimension and six-dimensional conformal gravity. Necessary conditions for almost universal metrics are also studied.

Universal Walker metrics

We consider four dimensional spaces of neutral signature and give examples of universal spaces of Walker type. These spaces have no analogue in other signatures in four dimensions and provide with a new class of spaces being universal.

Type II universal spacetimes

We study type II universal metrics of the Lorentzian signature. These metrics simultaneously solve vacuum field equations of all theories of gravitation with the Lagrangian being a polynomial curvature invariant constructed from the metric, the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives of an arbitrary order. We provide examples of type II universal metrics for all composite number dimensions. On the other hand, we have no examples for prime number dimensions and we prove the non-existence of type II universal spacetimes in five dimensions. We also present type II vacuum solutions of selected classes of gravitational theories, such as Lovelock, quadratic and L(Riemann) gravities.

Extended Kerr-Schild spacetimes: General properties and some explicit examples

We study extended Kerr-Schild (xKS) spacetimes, i.e. an extension of the Kerr-Schild (KS) ansatz where, in addition to the null KS vector, a spacelike vector field appears in the metric. In contrast to the KS case, we obtain only a necessary condition under which the KS vector is geodetic. However, it is shown that this condition becomes sufficient if we appropriately restrict the geometry of the null KS and spacelike vector. It turns out that xKS spacetimes with a geodetic KS vector are of Weyl type I and the KS vector has the same optical properties in the full and background spacetimes. In the case of Kundt xKS spacetimes, the compatible Weyl types are further restricted and a few examples of such metrics are provided. The relation of pp -waves to the class of Kundt xKS spacetimes is briefly discussed. We also show that the CCLP black hole, as an example of an expanding xKS spacetime, is of Weyl type Ii, which specializes to type D in the uncharged or non-rotating limit, and that its optical matrix satisfies the optical constraint.

Exact Solutions of General Relativity and Quadratic Gravity in Arbitrary Dimension

In the first part of this thesis, Kerr-Schild metrics and extended Kerr-Schild metrics are analyzed in the context of higher dimensional general relativity. Employing the higher dimensional generalizations of the Newman-Penrose formalism and the algebraic classification of spacetimes based on the existence and multiplicity of Weyl aligned null directions, we establish various geometrical properties of the Kerr-Schild congruences, determine compatible Weyl types and in the expanding case discuss the presence of curvature singularities. We also present known exact solutions admitting these Kerr-Schild forms and construct some new ones using the Brinkmann warp product. In the second part, the influence of quantum corrections consisting of quadratic curvature invariants on the Einstein-Hilbert action is considered and exact vacuum solutions of these quadratic gravities are studied in arbitrary dimension. We investigate classes of Einstein spacetimes and spacetimes with a null radiation term in the Ricci tensor satisfying the vacuum field equations of quadratic gravity and provide examples of these metrics.

Type III and N solutions to quadratic gravity

We study exact vacuum solutions to quadratic gravity (QG) of the Weyl types N and III. We show that in an arbitrary dimension all Einstein spacetimes of the Weyl type N with an appropriately chosen effective cosmological constant $Λ$ are exact solutions to QG and we refer to explicitly known metrics within this class. For type III Einstein spacetimes, an additional constraint follows from the field equations of QG and examples of spacetimes obeying such constraint are given. However, type III pp-waves do not satisfy this constraint and thus do not solve QG. For type N, we also study a wider class of spacetimes admitting a pure radiation term in the Ricci tensor. In contrast to the Einstein case, the field equations of generic QG determine optical properties of the geometry and restrict such exact solutions to the Kundt class. We provide examples of these metrics.

Kerr-Schild spacetimes with (A)dS background

General properties of Kerr-Schild spacetimes with (A)dS background in arbitrary dimension are studied. It is shown that the geodetic Kerr-Schild vector k is a multiple WAND of the spacetime. Einstein Kerr-Schild spacetimes with non-expanding k are shown to be of Weyl type N, while the expanding spacetimes are of type II or D. It is shown that this class of spacetimes obeys the optical constraint. This allows us to solve Sachs equation, determine r-dependence of boost weight zero components of the Weyl tensor and discuss curvature singularities.
