Finite fields whose members are the sum of a potent and a 4-potent

We classify those finite fields $\mathbb{F}_q$, for $q$ a power of some fixed prime number, whose members are the sum of an $n$-potent element with $n>1$ and a 4-potent element. It is shown that there are precisely ten non-trivial pairs $(q,n)$ for which this is the case. This continues a recent publication by Cohen-Danchev et al. in Turk. J. Math. (2024) in which the tripotent version was examined in-depth as well as it extends recent results of this branch established by Abyzov-Tapkin in Sib. Math. J. (2024).

The distribution of $k$-free numbers

Let $R_k(x)$ denote the error incurred by approximating the number of $k$-free integers less than $x$ by $x/ζ(k)$. It is well known that $R_k(x)=Ω(x^{\frac{1}{2k}})$, and widely conjectured that $R_k(x)=O(x^{\frac{1}{2k}+ε})$. By establishing weak linear independence of some subsets of zeros of the Riemann zeta function, we establish an effective proof of the lower bound, with significantly larger bounds on the constant compared to those obtained in prior work. For example, we show that $R_k(x)/x^{1/2k} > 3$ infinitely often and that $R_k(x)/x^{1/2k} < -3$ infinitely often, for $k=2$, $3$, $4$, and $5$. We also investigate $R_2(x)$ and $R_3(x)$ in detail and establish that our bounds far exceed the oscillations exhibited by these functions over a long range: for $0<x\leq10^{18}$ we show that $|R_2(x)| < 1.12543x^{1/4}$ and $|R_3(x)| < 1.27417x^{1/6}$. We also present some empirical results regarding gaps between square-free numbers and between cube-free numbers.

Linear combinations of primitive elements of a finite field

We examine linear sums of primitive roots and their inverses in finite fields. In particular, we refine a result by Li and Han, and show that every $p> 13$ has a pair of primitive roots $a$ and $b$ such that $a+ b$ and $a^{-1} + b^{-1}$ are also primitive roots mod $p$.

On Grosswald's conjecture on primitive roots

Grosswald's conjecture is that $g(p)$, the least primitive root modulo $p$, satisfies $g(p) \leq \sqrt{p} - 2$ for all $p>409$. We make progress towards this conjecture by proving that $g(p) \leq \sqrt{p} -2$ for all $409 3.67\times 10^{71}$.

On consecutive primitive elements in a finite field

For $q$ an odd prime power with $q>169$ we prove that there are always three consecutive primitive elements in the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. Indeed, there are precisely eleven values of $q \leq 169$ for which this is false. For $4\leq n \leq 8$ we present conjectures on the size of $q_{0}(n)$ such that $q>q_{0}(n)$ guarantees the existence of $n$ consecutive primitive elements in $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, provided that $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ has characteristic at least~$n$. Finally, we improve the upper bound on $q_{0}(n)$ for all $n\geq 3$.
