A Payne-Weinberger inequality for quantum dot Dirac operators

In this work we prove a Payne-Weinberger type inequality for quantum dot Dirac operators defined on bounded and simply connected planar domains. This is a sharp upper bound for their first positive eigenvalue depending only on the isoperimetric deficit of the domain. To this end, we use a recently studied connection with the so-called $\overline\partial$-Robin Laplacian and we establish an analogous inequality for its first eigenvalue, relying on the corresponding inequality for the Robin Laplacian.

A fractional De Giorgi isoperimetric type inequality

We establish an isoperimetric type inequality for the level sets of functions in fractional Sobolev spaces. This answers a question posed by the first author in a previous paper. To obtain it, we work out a slight modification of some estimates for nonlocal interaction functionals established by Savin and Valdinoci. We also show how said isoperimetric inequality leads to the Hölder continuity of functions in (weak) fractional De Giorgi classes.

A connection between quantum dot Dirac operators and $\overline\partial$-Robin Laplacians in the context of shape optimization problems

This work addresses Faber-Krahn-type inequalities for quantum dot Dirac operators with nonnegative mass on bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We show that this family of inequalities is equivalent to a family of Faber-Krahn-type inequalities for $\overline\partial$-Robin Laplacians. Thanks to this, we prove them in the case of simply connected domains for quantum dot boundary conditions asymptotically close to zigzag boundary conditions. Finally, we also study the case of negative mass.

On the existence of solutions to some singular parabolic free boundary problems

We construct nonnegative weak solutions to the singular parabolic free boundary problem \[ \partial_t u - Δu = - \frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d} u} u_+^γ, \] where $γ\in (0,1]$, $u_+ := \max\{u,0\}$, and the term in the right-hand side denotes the formal derivative of the non-smooth function $u \mapsto u_+^γ$. Weak solutions are obtained as limits of a suitable approximation procedure. We show uniform optimal regularity, optimal growth and nondegeneracy estimates, and a Weiss-type monotonicity formula for solutions to the approximating problem. Such uniform estimates are then passed to limit: we prove the existence of a class of weak solutions to the free boundary problem which is closed under blow-up and whose weak formulation encodes the sharp free boundary condition. Finally, we construct several examples of weak solutions with self-similar and traveling wave form.

Stable cones in the Alt-Phillips free boundary problem

In this paper we prove a classification result for axially symmetric one phase minimizers of the Alt-Phillips free boundary problem in dimensions 3, 4, and 5. To accomplish this, we establish a stability inequality that extends the one for the Alt-Caffarelli problem.

Stable solutions to fractional semilinear equations: uniqueness, classification, and approximation results

We study stable solutions to fractional semilinear equations $(-Δ)^s u = f(u)$ in $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, for convex nonlinearities $f$, and under the Dirichlet exterior condition $u=g$ in $\mathbb{R}^n \setminus Ω$ with general $g$. We establish a uniqueness and a classification result, and we show that weak (energy) stable solutions can be approximated by a sequence of bounded (and hence regular) stable solutions to similar problems. As an application of our results, we establish the interior regularity of weak (energy) stable solutions to the problem for the half-Laplacian in dimensions $1 \leq n \leq 4$.

Elliptic regularization of some semilinear parabolic free boundary problems

We prove existence of strong solutions to a family of some semilinear parabolic free boundary problems by means of elliptic regularization. Existence of solutions is obtained in two steps: we first show some uniform energy estimates and then we pass to the weak limit. To carry out this second step, we establish uniform non-degeneracy estimates for the approximating sequence as well as parabolic non-degeneracy and optimal regularity for the limit solution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the elliptic regularization approach is used in the context of parabolic obstacle problems.

Eigenvalue curves for generalized MIT bag models

We study spectral properties of Dirac operators on bounded domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ with boundary conditions of electrostatic and Lorentz scalar type and which depend on a parameter $τ\in\mathbb{R}$; the case $τ= 0$ corresponds to the MIT bag model. We show that the eigenvalues are parametrized as increasing functions of $τ$, and we exploit this monotonicity to study the limits as $τ\to \pm \infty$. We prove that if $Ω$ is not a ball then the first positive eigenvalue is greater than the one of a ball with the same volume for all $τ$ large enough. Moreover, we show that the first positive eigenvalue converges to the mass of the particle as $τ\downarrow -\infty$, and we also analyze its first order asymptotics.

A universal Hölder estimate up to dimension 4 for stable solutions to half-Laplacian semilinear equations

We study stable solutions to the equation $(-Δ)^{1/2} u = f(u)$, posed in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$. For nonnegative convex nonlinearities, we prove that stable solutions are smooth in dimensions $n\leq 4$. This result, which was known only for $n=1$, follows from a new interior Hölder estimate that is completely independent of the nonlinearity $f$. A main ingredient in our proof is a new geometric form of the stability condition. It is still unknown for other fractions of the Laplacian and, surprisingly, it requires convexity of the nonlinearity. From it, we deduce higher order Sobolev estimates that allow us to extend the techniques developed by Cabré, Figalli, Ros-Oton, and Serra for the Laplacian. In this way we obtain, besides the Hölder bound for $n\leq 4$, a universal $H^{1/2}$ estimate in all dimensions. Our $L^\infty$ bound is expected to hold for $n\leq 8$, but this has been settled only in the radial case or when $f(u) = λe^u$. For other fractions of the Laplacian, the expected optimal dimension for boundedness of stable solutions has been reached only when $f(u) = λe^u$, even in the radial case.

Semilinear integro-differential equations, II: one-dimensional and saddle-shaped solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation

This paper addresses saddle-shaped solutions to the semilinear equation $L_K u = f(u)$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2m}$, where $L_K$ is a linear elliptic integro-differential operator with a radially symmetric kernel $K$, and $f$ is of Allen-Cahn type. Saddle-shaped solutions are doubly radial, odd with respect to the Simons cone $\{(x', x'') \in \mathbb{R}^m \times \mathbb{R}^m \, : \, |x'| = |x''|\}$, and vanish only in this set. We establish the uniqueness and the asymptotic behavior of the saddle-shaped solution. For this, we prove a Liouville type result, the one-dimensional symmetry of positive solutions to semilinear problems in a half-space, and maximum principles in "narrow" sets. The existence of the solution was already proved in part I of this work.

Semilinear integro-differential equations, I: odd solutions with respect to the Simons cone

This is the first of two papers concerning saddle-shaped solutions to the semilinear equation $L_K u = f(u)$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2m}$, where $L_K$ is a linear elliptic integro-differential operator and $f$ is of Allen-Cahn type. Saddle-shaped solutions are doubly radial, odd with respect to the Simons cone $\{(x', x'') \in \mathbb{R}^m \times \mathbb{R}^m \, : \, |x'| = |x''|\}$, and vanish only on this set. By the odd symmetry, $L_K$ coincides with a new operator $L_K^{\mathcal{O}}$ which acts on functions defined only on one side of the Simons cone, $\{|x'|>|x''|\}$, and that vanish on it. This operator $L_K^{\mathcal{O}}$, which corresponds to reflect a function oddly and then apply $L_K$, has a kernel on $\{|x'|>|x''|\}$ which is different from $K$. In this first paper, we characterize the kernels $K$ for which the new kernel is positive and therefore one can develop a theory on the saddle-shaped solution. The necessary and sufficient condition for this turns out to be that $K$ is radially symmetric and $τ\mapsto K(\sqrt τ)$ is a strictly convex function. Assuming this, we prove an energy estimate for doubly radial odd minimizers and the existence of saddle-shaped solution. In a subsequent article, part II, further qualitative properties of saddle-shaped solutions will be established, such as their asymptotic behavior, a maximum principle for the linearized operator, and their uniqueness.

Uniqueness and stability of the saddle-shaped solution to the fractional Allen-Cahn equation

In this paper we prove the uniqueness of the saddle-shaped solution to the semilinear nonlocal elliptic equation $(-Δ)^γu = f(u)$ in $\mathbb R^{2m}$, where $γ\in (0,1)$ and $f$ is of Allen-Cahn type. Moreover, we prove that this solution is stable whenever $2m\geq 14$. As a consequence of this result and the connection of the problem with nonlocal minimal surfaces, we show that the Simons cone $\{(x', x'') \in \mathbb R^{m}\times \mathbb R^m \ : \ |x'| = |x''|\}$ is a stable nonlocal $(2γ)$-minimal surface in dimensions $2m\geq 14$. Saddle-shaped solutions of the fractional Allen-Cahn equation are doubly radial, odd with respect to the Simons cone, and vanish only in this set. It was known that these solutions exist in all even dimensions and are unstable in dimensions $2$, $4$ and $6$. Thus, after our result, the stability remains an open problem only in dimensions $8$, $10$, and $12$. The importance of studying this type of solution is due to its relation with the fractional version of a conjecture by De Giorgi. Saddle-shaped solutions are the simplest non 1D candidates to be global minimizers in high dimensions, a property not yet established in any dimension.

Regularity of radial stable solutions to semilinear elliptic equations for the fractional Laplacian

We study the regularity of stable solutions to the problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{rcll} (-Δ)^s u &=& f(u) & \text{in} \quad B_1\,, u &\equiv&0 & \text{in} \quad \mathbb R^n\setminus B_1\,, \end{array} \right. $$ where $s\in(0,1)$. Our main result establishes an $L^\infty$ bound for stable and radially decreasing $H^s$ solutions to this problem in dimensions $2 \leq n < 2(s+2+\sqrt{2(s+1)})$. In particular, this estimate holds for all $s\in(0,1)$ in dimensions $2 \leq n\leq 6$. It applies to all nonlinearities $f\in C^2$. For such parameters $s$ and $n$, our result leads to the regularity of the extremal solution when $f$ is replaced by $λf$ with $λ> 0$. This is a widely studied question for $s=1$, which is still largely open in the nonradial case both for $s=1$ and $s<1$.

The wave equation for stiff strings and piano tuning

We study the wave equation for a string with stiffness. We solve the equation and provide a uniqueness theorem with suitable boundary conditions. For a pinned string we compute the spectrum, which is slightly inharmonic. Therefore, the widespread scale of 12 equal divisions of the just octave is not the best choice to tune instruments like the piano. Basing on the theory of dissonance, we provide a way to tune the piano in order to improve its consonance. A good solution is obtained by tuning a note and its fifth by minimizing their beats.
