The spectral boundary of the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP) -- free fermions, Bethe ansatz and random matrix theory

In non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP) serves as a paradigmatic example. We investigate the spectral characteristics of the ASEP, focusing on the spectral boundary of its generator matrix. We examine finite ASEP chains of length $L$, under periodic (pbc) and open boundary conditions (obc). Notably, the spectral boundary exhibits $L$ spikes for pbc and $L+1$ spikes for obc. Treating the ASEP generator as an interacting non-Hermitian fermionic model, we extend the model to have tunable interaction. In the non-interacting case, the analytically computed many-body spectrum shows a spectral boundary with prominent spikes. For pbc, we use the coordinate Bethe ansatz to interpolate between the noninteracting case to the ASEP limit, and show that these spikes stem from clustering of Bethe roots. The robustness of the spikes in the spectral boundary is demonstrated by linking the ASEP generator to random matrices with trace correlations or, equivalently, random graphs with distinct cycle structures, both displaying similar spiked spectral boundaries.

Universal anomalous fluctuations in charged single-file systems

Introducing a general class of one-dimensional single-file systems (meaning that particle crossings are prohibited) of interacting hardcore particles with internal degrees of freedom (called charge), we exhibit a novel type of dynamical universality reflected in anomalous statistical properties of macroscopic fluctuating observables such as charge transfer. We find that stringent dynamical constraints lead to universal anomalous statistics of cumulative charge currents manifested both on the timescale characteristic of typical fluctuations and also in the rate function describing rare events. By computing the full counting statistics of net transferred charge between two extended subsystems, we establish a number of unorthodox dynamical properties in an analytic fashion. Most prominently, typical fluctuations in equilibrium are governed by a universal distribution that markedly deviates from the expected Gaussian statistics, whereas large fluctuations are described by an exotic large-deviation rate function featuring an exceptional triple critical point. Far from equilibrium, competition between dynamical phases leads to dynamical phase transitions of first and second order and spontaneous breaking of fluctuation symmetry of the univariate charge large-deviation function. The rich phenomenology of the outlined dynamical universality is exemplified on an exactly solvable classical cellular automaton of charged hardcore particles. We determine the dynamical phase diagram in the framework of Lee-Yang's theory of phase transitions and exhibit a hyper-dimensional diagram of distinct dynamical regimes. Our findings lead us to conclude that the conventional classification of dynamical universality classes based on the algebraic dynamical exponents and asymptotic scaling functions that characterize hydrodynamic relaxation of the dynamical structure factor is incomplete and calls for refinement.

Dual symplectic classical circuits: An exactly solvable model of many-body chaos

We propose a general exact method of calculating dynamical correlation functions in dual symplectic brick-wall circuits in one dimension. These are deterministic classical many-body dynamical systems which can be interpreted in terms of symplectic dynamics in two orthogonal (time and space) directions. In close analogy with quantum dual-unitary circuits, we prove that two-point dynamical correlation functions are non-vanishing only along the edges of the light cones. The dynamical correlations are exactly computable in terms of a one-site Markov transfer operator, which is generally of infinite dimensionality. We test our theory in a specific family of dual-symplectic circuits, describing the dynamics of a classical Floquet spin chain. Remarkably, expressing these models in the form of a composition of rotations leads to a transfer operator with a block diagonal form in the basis of spherical harmonics. This allows us to obtain analytical predictions for simple local observables. We demonstrate the validity of our theory by comparison with Monte Carlo simulations, displaying excellent agreement with the latter for different choices of observables.

Dynamical criticality of magnetization transfer in integrable spin chains

Recent studies have found that fluctuations of magnetization transfer in integrable spin chains violate the central limit property. Here we revisit the problem of anomalous counting statistics in the Landau-Lifshitz field theory by specializing to two distinct anomalous regimes featuring a dynamical critical point. By performing optimized numerical simulations using an integrable space-time discretization we extract the algebraic growth exponents of time-dependent cumulants which attain their threshold values. The distinctly non-Gaussian statistics of magnetization transfer in the easy-axis regime is found to converge towards the universal distribution of charged single-file systems. At the isotropic point we infer a weakly non-Gaussian distribution, corroborating the view that superdiffusive spin transport in integrable spin chains does not belong to any known dynamical universality class.

Spectral and steady-state properties of fermionic random quadratic Liouvillians

We study spectral and steady-state properties of generic Markovian dissipative systems described by quadratic fermionic Liouvillian operators of the Lindblad form. The Hamiltonian dynamics is modeled by a generic random quadratic operator, i.e., as a featureless superconductor of class D, whereas the Markovian dissipation is described by $M$ random linear jump operators. By varying the dissipation strength and the ratio of dissipative channels per fermion, $m=M/(2N_F)$, we find two distinct phases where the support of the single-particle spectrum has one or two connected components. In the strongly dissipative regime, this transition occurs for $m=1/2$ and is concomitant with a qualitative change in both the steady-state and the spectral gap that rules the large-time dynamics. Above this threshold, the spectral gap and the steady-state purity qualitatively agree with the fully generic (i.e., non-quadratic) case studied recently. Below $m=1/2$, the spectral gap closes in the thermodynamic limit and the steady-state decouples into an ergodic and a nonergodic sector yielding a non-monotonic steady-state purity as a function of the dissipation strength. Our results show that some of the universal features previously observed for fully random Liouvillians are generic for a sufficiently large number of jump operators. On the other hand, if the number of dissipation channels is decreased the system can exhibit nonergodic features, rendering it possible to suppress dissipation in protected subspaces even in the presence of strong system-environment coupling.

Anomalous diffusion in the Long-Range Haken-Strobl-Reineker model

We analyze the propagation of excitons in a $d$-dimensional lattice with power-law hopping $\propto 1/r^α$ in the presence of dephasing, described by a generalized Haken-Strobl-Reineker model. We show that in the strong dephasing (quantum Zeno) regime the dynamics is described by a classical master equation for an exclusion process with long jumps. In this limit, we analytically compute the spatial distribution, whose shape changes at a critical value of the decay exponent $α_{\rm cr} = (d+2)/2$. The exciton always diffuses anomalously: a superdiffusive motion is associated to a Lévy stable distribution with long-range algebraic tails for $α\leqα_{\rm cr}$, while for $α> α_{\rm cr}$ the distribution corresponds to a surprising mixed Gaussian profile with long-range algebraic tails, leading to the coexistence of short-range diffusion and long-range Lévy-flights. In the many-exciton case, we demonstrate that, starting from a domain-wall exciton profile, algebraic tails appear in the distributions for any $α$, which affects thermalization: the longer the hopping range, the faster equilibrium is reached. Our results are directly relevant to experiments with cold trapped ions, Rydberg atoms and supramolecular dye aggregates. They provide a way to realize an exclusion process with long jumps experimentally.

Symmetry Classification of Many-Body Lindbladians: Tenfold Way and Beyond

We perform a systematic symmetry classification of many-body Lindblad superoperators describing general (interacting) open quantum systems coupled to a Markovian environment. Our classification is based on the behavior of the many-body Lindbladian under antiunitary symmetries and unitary involutions. We find that Hermiticity preservation reduces the number of symmetry classes, while trace preservation and complete positivity do not, and that the set of admissible classes depends on the presence of additional unitary symmetries: in their absence or in symmetry sectors containing steady states, many-body Lindbladians belong to one of ten non-Hermitian symmetry classes; if however, there are additional symmetries and we consider non-steady-state sectors, they belong to a different set of 19 classes. In both cases, it does not include classes with Kramer's degeneracy. Remarkably, our classification admits a straightforward generalization to the case of non-Markovian, and even non-trace-preserving, open quantum dynamics. While the abstract classification is completely general, we then apply it to general (long-range, interacting, spatially inhomogeneous) spin-$1/2$ chains. We explicitly build examples in all ten classes of Lindbladians in steady-state sectors, describing standard physical processes such as dephasing, spin injection and absorption, and incoherent hopping, thus illustrating the relevance of our classification for practical physics applications. Finally, we show that the examples in each class display unique random-matrix correlations. To fully resolve all symmetries, we employ the combined analysis of bulk complex spacing ratios and the overlap of eigenvector pairs related by symmetry operations. We further find that statistics of levels constrained onto the real and imaginary axes or close to the origin are not universal due to spontaneous breaking of Lindbladian PT symmetry.

Extending third quantization with commuting observables: a dissipative spin-boson model

We consider the spectral and initial value problem for the Lindblad-Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan master equation describing an open quantum system of bosons and spins, where the bosonic parts of the Hamiltonian and Lindblad jump operators are quadratic and linear respectively, while the spins couple to bosons via mutually commuting spin operators. Needless to say, the spin degrees of freedom can be replaced by any set of finite-level quantum systems. A simple, yet non-trivial example of a single open spin-boson model is worked out in some detail.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling in the Hubbard model

We explore the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) scaling in the one-dimensional Hubbard model, which exhibits global $SU_c(2)\otimes SU_s(2)$ symmetry at half-filling, for the pseudo-charge and the total spin. We analyze dynamical scaling properties of high temperature charge and spin correlations and transport. At half-filling, we observe a clear KPZ scaling in both charge and spin sectors. Away from half-filling, the $SU_c(2)$ charge symmetry is reduced to $U_c(1)$, while the $SU_s(2)$ symmetry for the total spin is retained. Consequently, transport in the charge sector becomes ballistic, while KPZ scaling is preserved in the spin sector. These findings confirm the link between non-abelian symmetries and KPZ scaling in the presence of integrability. We study two settings of the model: one involving a quench from a bi-partitioned state asymptotically close to the $T=\infty$ equilibrium state of the system, and another where the system is coupled to two markovian reservoirs at the two edges of the chain.

Boundary Chaos: Exact Entanglement Dynamics

We compute the dynamics of entanglement in the minimal setup producing ergodic and mixing quantum many-body dynamics, which we previously dubbed {\em boundary chaos}. This consists of a free, non-interacting brickwork quantum circuit, in which chaos and ergodicity is induced by an impurity interaction, i.e., an entangling two-qudit gate, placed at the system's boundary. We compute both the conventional bipartite entanglement entropy with respect to a connected subsystem including the impurity interaction for initial product states as well as the so-called operator entanglement entropy of initial local operators. Thereby we provide exact results in a particular scaling limit of both time and system size going to infinity for either very small or very large subsystems. We show that different classes of impurity interactions lead to very distinct entanglement dynamics. For impurity gates preserving a local product state forming the bulk of the initial state, entanglement entropies of states show persistent spikes with period set by the system size and suppressed entanglement in between, contrary to the expected linear growth in ergodic systems. We observe similar dynamics of operator entanglement for generic impurities. In contrast, for T-dual impurities, which remain unitary under partial transposition, we find entanglement entropies of both states and operators to grow linearly in time with the maximum possible speed allowed by the geometry of the system. The intensive nature of interactions in all cases cause entanglement to grow on extensive time scales proportional to system size.

Localization challenges quantum chaos in the finite two-dimensional Anderson model

It is believed that the two-dimensional (2D) Anderson model exhibits localization for any nonzero disorder in the thermodynamic limit and it is also well known that the finite-size effects are considerable in the weak disorder limit. Here we numerically study the quantum-chaos to localization transition in the finite 2D Anderson model using standard indicators used in the modern literature such as the level spacing ratio, spectral form factor, variances of observable matrix elements, participation entropy and the eigenstate entanglement entropy. We show that many features of these indicators may indicate emergence of robust single-particle quantum chaos at weak disorder. However, we argue that a careful numerical analysis is consistent with the single-parameter scaling theory and predicts the breakdown of quantum chaos at any nonzero disorder value in the thermodynamic limit. Among the hallmarks of this breakdown are the universal behavior of the spectral form factor at weak disorder, and the universal scaling of various indicators as a function of the parameter $u = \left(W \ln V\right)^{-1}$ where $W$ is the disorder strength and $V$ is the number of lattice sites.

Spectral form factor in a minimal bosonic model of many-body quantum chaos

We study spectral form factor in periodically-kicked bosonic chains. We consider a family of models where a Hamiltonian with the terms diagonal in the Fock space basis, including random chemical potentials and pair-wise interactions, is kicked periodically by another Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor hopping and pairing terms. We show that for intermediate-range interactions, random phase approximation can be used to rewrite the spectral form factor in terms of a bi-stochastic many-body process generated by an effective bosonic Hamiltonian. In the particle-number conserving case, i.e., when pairing terms are absent, the effective Hamiltonian has a non-abelian $SU(1,1)$ symmetry, resulting in universal quadratic scaling of the Thouless time with the system size, irrespective of the particle number. This is a consequence of degenerate symmetry multiplets of the subleading eigenvalue of the effective Hamiltonian and is broken by the pairing terms. In the latter case, we numerically find a nontrivial systematic system-size dependence of the Thouless time, in contrast to a related recent study for kicked fermionic chains.

Lindbladian dissipation of strongly-correlated quantum matter

We propose the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Lindbladian as a paradigmatic solvable model of dissipative many-body quantum chaos. It describes $N$ strongly coupled Majorana fermions with random all-to-all interactions, with unitary evolution given by a quartic Hamiltonian and the coupling to the environment described by $M$ quadratic jump operators, rendering the full Lindbladian quartic in the Majorana operators. Analytical progress is possible by developing a dynamical mean-field theory for the Liouvillian time evolution on the Keldysh contour. By disorder-averaging the interactions, we derive an (exact) effective action for two collective fields (Green's function and self-energy). In the large-$N$, large-$M$ limit, we obtain the saddle-point equations satisfied by the collective fields, which determine the typical timescales of the dissipative evolution, particularly, the spectral gap that rules the relaxation of the system to its steady state. We solve the saddle-point equations numerically and find that, for strong or intermediate dissipation, the system relaxes exponentially, with a spectral gap that can be computed analytically, while for weak dissipation, there are oscillatory corrections to the exponential relaxation. In this letter, we illustrate the feasibility of analytical calculations in strongly correlated dissipative quantum matter.

Dual unitary circuits in random geometries

Recently introduced dual unitary brickwork circuits have been recognised as paradigmatic exactly solvable quantum chaotic many-body systems with tunable degree of ergodicity and mixing. Here we show that regularity of the circuit lattice is not crucial for exact solvability. We consider a circuit where random 2-qubit dual unitary gates sit at intersections of random arrangements of straight lines in two dimensions (mikado) and analytically compute the variance of the spatio-temporal correlation function of local operators. Note that the average correlator vanishes due to local Haar randomness of the gates. The result can be physically motivated for two random mikado settings. The first corresponds to the thermal state of free particles carrying internal qubit degrees of freedom which experience interaction at kinematic crossings, while the second represents rotationally symmetric (random euclidean) space-time.

Boundary Chaos

Scrambling in many-body quantum systems causes initially local observables to spread uniformly over the whole available Hilbert space under unitary dynamics, which in lattice systems causes exponential suppression of dynamical correlation functions with system size. Here, we present a perturbed free quantum circuit model, in which ergodicity is induced by an impurity interaction placed on the system's boundary, that allows for demonstrating the underlying mechanism. This is achieved by mapping dynamical correlation functions of local operators acting at the boundary to a partition function with complex weights defined on a two dimensional lattice with a helical topology. We evaluate this partition function in terms of transfer matrices, which allow for numerically treating system sizes far beyond what is accessible by exact diagonalization and whose spectral properties determine the asymptotic scaling of correlations. Combining analytical arguments with numerical results we show that for impurities which remain unitary under partial transpose correlations are exponentially suppressed with system size in a particular scaling limit. In contrast for generic impurities or generic locations of the local operators correlations show persistent revivals with a period given by the system size.

Exact anomalous current fluctuations in a deterministic interacting model

We analytically compute the full counting statistics of charge transfer in a classical automaton of interacting charged particles. Deriving a closed-form expression for the moment generating function with respect to a stationary equilibrium state, we employ asymptotic analysis to infer the structure of charge current fluctuations for a continuous range of timescales. The solution exhibits several unorthodox features. Most prominently, on the timescale of typical fluctuations the probability distribution of the integrated charge current in a stationary ensemble without bias is distinctly non-Gaussian despite diffusive behavior of dynamical charge susceptibility. While inducing a charge imbalance is enough to recover Gaussian fluctuations, we find that higher cumulants grow indefinitely in time with different exponents, implying singular scaled cumulants. We associate this phenomenon with the lack of a regularity condition on moment generating functions and the onset of a dynamical critical point. In effect, the scaled cumulant generating function does not, irrespectively of charge bias, represent a faithful generating function of the scaled cumulants, yet the associated Legendre dual yields the correct large-deviation rate function. Our findings hint at novel types of dynamical universality classes in deterministic many-body systems.

Quantum chaos in triangular billiards

We present an extensive numerical study of spectral statistics and eigenfunctions of quantized triangular billiards. We compute two million consecutive eigenvalues for six representative cases of triangular billiards, three with generic angles with irrational ratios with $π$, whose classical dynamics is presumably mixing, and three with exactly one angle rational with $π$, which are presumably only weakly mixing or even only non-ergodic in case of right-triangles. We find excellent agreement of short and long range spectral statistics with the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrix theory for the most irrational generic triangle, while the other cases show small but significant deviations which are attributed either to scarring or super-scarring mechanism. This result, which extends the quantum chaos conjecture to systems with dynamical mixing in the absence of hard (Lyapunov) chaos, has been corroborated by analysing distributions of phase-space localisation measures of eigenstates and inspecting the structure of characteristic typical and atypical eigenfunctions.

Simulating Lindbladian evolution with non-abelian symmetries: Ballistic front propagation in the $SU(2)$ Hubbard model with a localized loss

We develop a non-Abelian time evolving block decimation (NA-TEBD) approach to study of open systems governed by Lindbladian time evolution, while exploiting an arbitrary number of abelian or non-abelian symmetries. We illustrate this method in a one-dimensional fermionic $SU(2)$ Hubbard model on a semi-infinite lattice with localized particle loss at one end. We observe a ballistic front propagation with strongly renormalized front velocity, and a hydrodynamic current density profile. For large loss rates, a suppression of the particle current is observed, as a result of the quantum Zeno effect. Operator entanglement is found to propagate faster than the depletion profile, preceding the latter.
