Exact solution of the Floquet-PXP cellular automaton

We study the dynamics of a bulk deterministic Floquet model, the Rule 201 synchronous one-dimensional reversible cellular automaton (RCA201). The system corresponds to a deterministic, reversible, and discrete version of the PXP model, whereby a site flips only if both its nearest neighbours are unexcited. We show that the RCA201/Floquet-PXP model exhibits ballistic propagation of interacting quasiparticles - or solitons - corresponding to the domain walls between non-trivial three-fold vacuum states. Starting from the quasiparticle picture, we find the exact matrix product state form of the non-equilibrium stationary state for a range of boundary conditions, including both periodic and stochastic. We discuss further implications of the integrability of the model.

Matrix product state of multi-time correlations

For an interacting spatio-temporal lattice system we introduce a formal way of expressing multi-time correlation functions of local observables located at the same spatial point with a time state, i.e. a statistical distribution of configurations observed along a time lattice. Such a time state is defined with respect to a particular equilibrium state that is invariant under space and time translations. The concept is developed within the Rule 54 reversible cellular automaton, for which we explicitly construct a matrix product form of the time state, with matrices that act on the 3-dimensional auxiliary space. We use the matrix-product state to express equal-space time-dependent density-density correlation function, which, for special maximum-entropy values of equilibrium parameters, agrees with the previous results. Additionally, we obtain an explicit expression for the probabilities of observing all multi-time configurations, which enables us to study distributions of times between consecutive excitations and prove the absence of decoupling of timescales in the Rule 54 model.

Random Matrix Spectral Form Factor in Kicked Interacting Fermionic Chains

We study quantum chaos and spectral correlations in periodically driven (Floquet) fermionic chains with long-range two-particle interactions, in the presence and absence of particle number conservation ($U(1)$) symmetry. We analytically show that the spectral form factor precisely follows the prediction of random matrix theory in the regime of long chains, and for timescales that exceed the so-called Thouless/Ehrenfest time which scales with the size $L$ as ${\cal O}(L^2)$, or ${\cal O}(L^0)$, in the presence, or absence of $U(1)$ symmetry, respectively. Using random phase assumption which essentially requires long-range nature of interaction, we demonstrate that the Thouless time scaling is equivalent to the behavior of the spectral gap of a classical Markov chain, which is in the continuous-time (Trotter) limit generated, respectively, by a gapless $XXX$, or gapped $XXZ$, spin-1/2 chain Hamiltonian.

Inhomogeneous MPA and exact steady states of boundary driven spin chains at large dissipation

We find novel site-dependent Lax operators in terms of which we demonstrate exact solvability of a dissipatively driven XYZ spin-1/2 chain in the Zeno limit of strong dissipation, with jump operators polarizing the boundary spins in arbitrary directions. We write the corresponding nonequilibrium steady state using an inhomogeneous MPA, where the constituent matrices satisfy a simple set of linear recurrence relations. Although these matrices can be embedded into an infinite-dimensional auxiliary space, we have verified that they cannot be simultaneously put into a tridiagonal form, not even in the case of axially symmetric (XXZ) bulk interactions and general nonlongitudinal boundary dissipation. We expect our results to have further fundamental applications for the construction of nonlocal integrals of motion for the open XYZ model with arbitrary boundary fields, or the eight-vertex model.

Exact nonequilibrium steady state of open XXZ/XYZ spin-1/2 chain with Dirichlet boundary conditions

We investigate a dissipatively driven XYZ spin-1/2 chain in the Zeno limit of strong dissipation, described by Lindblad master equation. The nonequilibrium steady state is expressed in terms of a matrix product ansatz using novel site-dependent Lax operators. The components of Lax operators satisfy a simple set of linear recurrence equations that generalize the defining algebraic relations of the quantum group $U_q(sl_2)$. We reveal connection between the nonequilibrium steady state of the nonunitary dynamics and the respective integrable model with edge magnetic fields, described by coherent unitary dynamics.

Ergodicity Breaking Transition in Finite Disordered Spin Chains

We study disorder-induced ergodicity breaking transition in high-energy eigenstates of interacting spin-1/2 chains. Using exact diagonalization we introduce a cost function approach to quantitatively compare different scenarios for the eigenstate transition. We study ergodicity indicators such as the eigenstate entanglement entropy and the spectral level spacing ratio, and we consistently find that an (infinite-order) Kosterlitz-Thouless transition yields a lower cost function when compared to a finite-order transition. Interestingly, we observe that the transition point in finite systems exhibits nearly thermal properties, i.e., ergodicity indicators at the transition are close to the random matrix theory predictions.

Two-species hardcore reversible cellular automaton: matrix ansatz for dynamics and nonequilibrium stationary state

In this paper we study the statistical properties of a reversible cellular automaton in two out-of-equilibrium settings. In the first part we consider two instances of the initial value problem, corresponding to the inhomogeneous quench and the local quench. Our main result is an exact matrix product expression of the time evolution of the probability distribution, which we use to determine the time evolution of the density profiles analytically. In the second part we study the model on a finite lattice coupled with stochastic boundaries. Once again we derive an exact matrix product expression of the stationary distribution, as well as the particle current and density profiles in the stationary state. The exact expressions reveal the existence of different phases with either ballistic or diffusive transport depending on the boundary parameters.

Ballistic spin transport in a periodically driven integrable quantum system

We demonstrate ballistic spin transport of an integrable unitary quantum circuit, which can be understood either as a paradigm of an integrable periodically driven (Floquet) spin chain, or as a Trotterized anisotropic ($XXZ$) Heisenberg spin-1/2 model. We construct an analytic family of quasi-local conservation laws that break the spin-reversal symmetry and compute a lower bound on the spin Drude weight which is found to be a fractal function of the anisotropy parameter. Extensive numerical simulations of spin transport suggest that this fractal lower bound is in fact tight.

Exact large deviation statistics and trajectory phase transition of a deterministic boundary driven cellular automaton

We study the statistical properties of the long-time dynamics of the rule 54 reversible cellular automaton (CA), driven stochastically at its boundaries. This CA can be considered as a discrete-time and deterministic version of the Fredrickson-Andersen kinetically constrained model (KCM). By means of a matrix product ansatz, we compute the exact large deviation cumulant generating functions for a wide range of time-extensive observables of the dynamics, together with their associated rate functions and conditioned long-time distributions over configurations. We show that for all instances of boundary driving the CA dynamics occurs at the point of phase coexistence between competing active and inactive dynamical phases, similar to what happens in more standard KCMs. We also find the exact finite size scaling behaviour of these trajectory transitions, and provide the explicit "Doob-transformed" dynamics that optimally realises rare dynamical events.

Super-diffusion in one-dimensional quantum lattice models

We identify a class of one-dimensional spin and fermionic lattice models which display diverging spin and charge diffusion constants, including several paradigmatic models of exactly solvable strongly correlated many-body dynamics such as the isotropic Heisenberg spin chains, the Fermi-Hubbard model, and the t-J model at the integrable point. Using the hydrodynamic transport theory, we derive an analytic lower bound on the spin and charge diffusion constants by calculating the curvature of the corresponding Drude weights at half filling, and demonstrate that for certain lattice models with isotropic interactions some of the Noether charges exhibit super-diffusive transport at finite temperature and half filling.

Non-equilibrium quantum transport in presence of a defect: the non-interacting case

We study quantum transport after an inhomogeneous quantum quench in a free fermion lattice system in the presence of a localised defect. Using a new rigorous analytical approach for the calculation of large time and distance asymptotics of physical observables, we derive the exact profiles of particle density and current. Our analysis shows that the predictions of a semiclassical approach that has been extensively applied in similar problems match exactly with the correct asymptotics, except for possible finite distance corrections close to the defect. We generalise our formulas to an arbitrary non-interacting particle-conserving defect, expressing them in terms of its scattering properties.

Integrable quantum dynamics of open collective spin models

We consider a collective quantum spin-$s$ in contact with Markovian spin-polarized baths. Using a conserved super-operator charge, a differential representation of the Liouvillian is constructed to find its exact spectrum and eigen-modes. We study the spectral properties of the model in the large-$s$ limit using a semi-classical quantization condition and show that the spectral density may diverge along certain curves in the complex plane. We exploit our exact solution to characterize steady-state properties, in particular at the discontinuous phase transition that arises for unpolarized environments, and to determine the decay rates of coherences and populations. Our approach provides a systematic way of finding integrable Liouvillian operators with non-trivial steady-states as well as a way to study their spectral properties and eigen-modes.

Slow Dynamics in Translation-Invariant Quantum Lattice Models

Many-body quantum systems typically display fast dynamics and ballistic spreading of information. Here we address the open problem of how slow the dynamics can be after a generic breaking of integrability by local interactions. We develop a method based on degenerate perturbation theory that reveals slow dynamical regimes and delocalization processes in general translation invariant models, along with accurate estimates of their delocalization time scales. Our results shed light on the fundamental questions of robustness of quantum integrable systems and the possibility of many-body localization without disorder. As an example, we construct a large class of one-dimensional lattice models where, despite the absence of asymptotic localization, the transient dynamics is exceptionally slow, i.e., the dynamics is indistinguishable from that of many-body localized systems for the system sizes and time scales accessible in experiment and numerical simulations.

Integrable Trotterization: Local Conservation Laws and Boundary Driving

We discuss a general procedure to construct an integrable real-time trotterization of interacting lattice models. As an illustrative example we consider a spin-$1/2$ chain, with continuous time dynamics described by the isotropic ($XXX$) Heisenberg Hamiltonian. For periodic boundary conditions local conservation laws are derived from an inhomogeneous transfer matrix and a boost operator is constructed. In the continuous time limit these local charges reduce to the known integrals of motion of the Heisenberg chain. In a simple Kraus representation we also examine the nonequilibrium setting, where our integrable cellular automaton is driven by stochastic processes at the boundaries. We show explicitly, how an exact nonequilibrium steady state density matrix can be written in terms of a staggered matrix product ansatz. This simple trotterization scheme, in particular in the open system framework, could prove to be a useful tool for experimental simulations of the lattice models in terms of trapped ion and atom optics setups.

Strongly correlated non-equilibrium steady states with currents --- quantum and classical picture

In this minireview we will discuss recent progress in the analytical study of current-carrying non-equilibrium steady states (NESS) that can be constructed in terms of a matrix product ansatz. We will focus on one-dimensional exactly solvable strongly correlated cases, and will study both quantum models, and classical models which are deterministic in the bulk. The only source of classical stochasticity in the time-evolution will come from the boundaries of the system. Physically, these boundaries may be understood as Markovian baths, which drive the current through the system. The examples studied include the open XXZ Heisenberg spin chain, the open Hubbard model, and a classical integrable reversible cellular automaton, namely the Rule 54 of Bobenko {\em et al}. [Commun. Math. Phys. {\bf 158}, 127 (1993)] with stochastic boundaries. The quantum NESS can be at least partially understood through the Yang-Baxter integrability structure of the underlying integrable bulk Hamiltonian, whereas for the Rule 54 model NESS seems to come from a seemingly unrelated integrability theory. In both the quantum and the classical case, the underlying matrix product ansatz defining the NESS also allows for construction of novel conservation laws of the bulk models themselves. In the classical case, a modification of the matrix product ansatz also allows for construction of states beyond the steady state (i.e., some of the decay modes -- Liouvillian eigenvectors of the model). We hope that this article will help further the quest to unite different perspectives of integrability of NESS (of both quantum and classical models) into a single unified framework.

Fisher information approach to non-equilibrium phase transitions in quantum XXZ spin chain with boundary noise

We investigated quantum critical behaviours in the non-equilibrium steady state of a $XXZ$ spin chain with boundary Markovian noise using the Fisher information. The latter represents the distance between two infinitesimally close states, and its superextensive size scaling witnesses a critical behaviour due to a phase transition, since all the interaction terms are extensive. Perturbatively in the noise strength, we found superextensive Fisher information at anisotropy $|Δ|\leqslant1$ and irrational $\frac{\arccosΔ}π$ irrespective of the order of two non-commuting limits, i.e. the thermodynamic limit and the limit of sending $\frac{\arccosΔ}π$ to an irrational number via a sequence of rational approximants. From this result we argue the existence of a non-equilibrium quantum phase transition with a critical phase $|Δ|\leqslant1$. From the non-superextensivity of the Fisher information of reduced states, we infer that this non-equilibrium quantum phase transition does not have local order parameters but has non-local ones, at least at $|Δ|=1$. In the non-perturbative regime for the noise strength, we numerically computed the reduced Fisher information which lower bounds the full state Fisher information, and is superextensive only at $|Δ|=1$. Form the latter result, we derived local order parameters at $|Δ|=1$ in the non-perturbative case. The existence of critical behaviour witnessed by the Fisher information in the phase $|Δ|<1$ is still an open problem. The Fisher information also represents the best sensitivity for any estimation of the control parameter, in our case the anisotropy $Δ$, and its superextensivity implies enhanced estimation precision which is also highly robust in the presence of a critical phase.

Convergence radius of perturbative Lindblad driven non-equilibrium steady states

We address the problem of analyzing the radius of convergence of perturbative expansion of non-equilibrium steady states of Lindblad driven spin chains. A simple formal approach is developed for systematically computing the perturbative expansion of small driven systems. We consider the paradigmatic model of an open $XXZ$ spin 1/2 chain with boundary supported ultralocal Lindblad dissipators and treat two different perturbative cases: (i) expansion in system-bath coupling parameter and (ii) expansion in driving (bias) parameter. In the first case (i) we find that the radius of convergence quickly shrinks with increasing the system size, while in the second case (ii) we find that the convergence radius is always larger than $1$, and in particular it approaches $1$ from above as we change the anisotropy from easy plane ($XY$) to easy axis (Ising) regime.

Weak Quantum Chaos

Out-of-time-ordered correlation functions (OTOC's) are presently being extensively debated as quantifiers of dynamical chaos in interacting quantum many-body systems. We argue that in quantum spin and fermionic systems, where all local operators are bounded, an OTOC of local observables is bounded as well and thus its exponential growth is merely transient. As a better measure of quantum chaos in such systems, we propose, and study, the density of the OTOC of extensive sums of local observables, which can exhibit indefinite growth in the thermodynamic limit. We demonstrate this for the kicked quantum Ising model by using large-scale numerical results and an analytic solution in the integrable regime. In a generic case, we observe the growth of the OTOC density to be linear in time. We prove that this density in general, locally interacting, non-integrable quantum spin and fermionic dynamical systems exhibits growth that is at most polynomial in time---a phenomenon, which we term weak quantum chaos. In the special case of the model being integrable and the observables under consideration quadratic, the OTOC density saturates to a plateau.
