Moduli space of principal sheaves over projective varieties

Let G be a connected reductive group. The late Ramanathan gave a notion of (semi)stable principal G-bundle on a complex projective curve and constructed a projective moduli space of such objects. We generalize Ramanathan's notion and construction to the case of higher dimension, allowing also objects which we call semistable principal G-sheaves.

Projective moduli space of semistable principal sheaves for a reductive group

Let X be a smooth projective complex variety, and let G be an algebraic reductive complex group. We define the notion of principal G-sheaf, that generalises the notion of principal G-bundle. Then we define a notion of semistability, and construct the projective moduli space of semistable principal G-sheaves on X. This is a natural compactification of the moduli space of principal G-bundles. This is the announcement note presented by the second author in the conference held at Catania (11-13 April 2001), dedicated to the 60th birthday of Silvio Greco. Detailed proofs will appear elsewhere.

A Torelli theorem for the moduli space of Higgs bundles on a curve

Let X be a smooth projective complex curve, and let M be the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles on X (with genus g>1), with rank n and fixed determinant ξ, with n and deg(ξ) coprime. Let X' and ξ' be another such curve and line bundle, and M' the corresponding moduli space. We prove that if M and M' are isomorphic as algebraic varieties, then X and X' are isomorphic.

Extensions of Higgs Bundles

We prove a Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence for extensions of Higgs bundles. The results generalize known results for extensions of holomorphic bundles. Using Simpson's methods, we construct moduli spaces of stable objects. In an appendix we construct Bott-Chern forms for Higgs bundles

Irreducibility of the moduli space of vector bundles on surfaces and Brill-Noether theory on singular curves

We prove the irreducibility of the moduli space of rank 2 semistable torsion free sheaves (with a generic polarization and any value of c_2) on a K3 or a del Pezzo surface. In the case of a K3 surface, we need to prove a result on the connectivity of the Brill-Noether locus for singular curves on the surface. In the case of a del Pezzo surface, we reduce the problem to the case of P^2 by first relating the moduli spaces of the plane and the blown-up plane, and then studying how the moduli space changes when we change the polarization.

Affine representations of the fundamental group (with an appendix on parabolic representations)

Unitary representations of the fundamental group of a Kahler manifold correspond to polystable vector bundles (with vanishing Chern classes). Semisimple linear representations correspond to polystable Higgs bundles. In this paper we find the objects corresponding to affine representations: the linear part gives a Higgs bundle and the translation part corresponds to an element of a generalized de Rham cohomology.

Parabolic bundles and representations of the fundamental group

Let X be as smooth complex projective variety with Neron-Severi group isomorphic to Z, and D an irreducible divisor with normal crossing singularities. Assume r is equal to 2 or 3. We prove that if the fundamental group of X doesn't have irreducible PU(r) representations, then the fundamental group of X-D doesn't have irreducible U(r) representations. The proof uses the non-existence of certain stable parabolic bundles. We also obtain a similar result for GL(2) when D is smooth and X is a complex surface.
