A coalgebraic take on regular and $ω$-regular behaviours

We present a general coalgebraic setting in which we define finite and infinite behaviour with Büchi acceptance condition for systems whose type is a monad. The first part of the paper is devoted to presenting a construction of a monad suitable for modelling (in)finite behaviour. The second part of the paper focuses on presenting the concepts of a (coalgebraic) automaton and its ($ω$-) behaviour. We end the paper with coalgebraic Kleene-type theorems for ($ω$-) regular input. The framework is instantiated on non-deterministic (Büchi) automata, tree automata and probabilistic automata.

Two modes of recognition: algebra, coalgebra, and languages

The aim of the paper is to build a connection between two approaches towards categorical language theory: the coalgebraic and algebraic language theory for monads. For a pair of monads modelling the branching and the linear type we defined regular maps that generalize regular languages known in classical non-deterministic automata theory. These maps are behaviours of certain automata (i.e. they possess a coalgebraic nature), yet they arise from Eilenberg-Moore algebras and their homomorphisms (by exploiting duality between the category of Eilenberg-Moore algebras and saturated coalgebras). Given some additional assumptions, we show that regular maps form a certain subcategory of the Kleisli category for the monad which is the composition of the branching and linear type. Moreover, we state a Kleene-like theorem characterising the regular morphisms category in terms of the smallest subcategory closed under certain operations. Additionally, whenever the branching type monad is taken to be the powerset monad, we show that regular maps are described as maps recognized by certain functors whose codomains are categories with all finite hom-sets. We instantiate our framework on classical non-deterministic automata, tree automata, fuzzy automata and weighted automata.

Behavioural equivalences for timed systems

Timed transition systems are behavioural models that include an explicit treatment of time flow and are used to formalise the semantics of several foundational process calculi and automata. Despite their relevance, a general mathematical characterisation of timed transition systems and their behavioural theory is still missing. We introduce the first uniform framework for timed behavioural models that encompasses known behavioural equivalences such as timed bisimulations, timed language equivalences as well as their weak and time-abstract counterparts. All these notions of equivalences are naturally organised by their discriminating power in a spectrum. We prove that this result does not depend on the type of the systems under scrutiny: it holds for any generalisation of timed transition system. We instantiate our framework to timed transition systems and their quantitative extensions such as timed probabilistic systems.

Lax functors and coalgebraic weak bisimulation

We generalize the work by Sobociński on relational presheaves and their connection with weak (bi)simulation for labelled transistion systems to a coalgebraic setting. We show that the coalgebraic notion of saturation studied in our previous work can be expressed in the language of lax functors in terms of existence of a certain adjunction between categories of lax functors. This observation allows us to generalize the notion of the coalgebraic weak bisimulation to lax functors. We instantiate this definition on two examples of timed systems and show that it coincides with their time-abstract behavioural equivalence.

Behavioural equivalences for coalgebras with unobservable moves

We introduce a general categorical framework for the definition of weak behavioural equivalences, building on and extending recent results in the field. This framework is based on parametrized saturation categories, i.e. categories whose hom-sets are endowed with complete orders and a suitable iteration operators; this structure allows us to provide the abstract definitions of various (weak) behavioural equivalence. We show that the Kleisli categories of many common monads are categories of this kind. This allows us to readily instantiate the abstract definitions to a wide range of existing systems (weighted LTS, Segala systems, calculi with names, etc.), recovering the corresponding notions of weak behavioural equivalences. Moreover, we can provide neatly new weak behavioural equivalences for more complex behaviours, like those definable on topological spaces, measurable spaces, etc.

Weak bisimulation for coalgebras over order enriched monads

The paper introduces the notion of a weak bisimulation for coalgebras whose type is a monad satisfying some extra properties. In the first part of the paper we argue that systems with silent moves should be modelled coalgebraically as coalgebras whose type is a monad. We show that the visible and invisible part of the functor can be handled internally inside a monadic structure. In the second part we introduce the notion of an ordered saturation monad, study its properties, and show that it allows us to present two approaches towards defining weak bisimulation for coalgebras and compare them. We support the framework presented in this paper by two main examples of models: labelled transition systems and simple Segala systems.

On coalgebras with internal moves

In the first part of the paper we recall the coalgebraic approach to handling the so-called invisible transitions that appear in different state-based systems semantics. We claim that these transitions are always part of the unit of a certain monad. Hence, coalgebras with internal moves are exactly coalgebras over a monadic type. The rest of the paper is devoted to supporting our claim by studying two important behavioural equivalences for state-based systems with internal moves, namely: weak bisimulation and trace semantics. We continue our research on weak bisimulations for coalgebras over order enriched monads. The key notions used in this paper and proposed by us in our previous work are the notions of an order saturation monad and a saturator. A saturator operator can be intuitively understood as a reflexive, transitive closure operator. There are two approaches towards defining saturators for coalgebras with internal moves. Here, we give necessary conditions for them to yield the same notion of weak bisimulation. Finally, we propose a definition of trace semantics for coalgebras with silent moves via a uniform fixed point operator. We compare strong and weak bisimilation together with trace semantics for coalgebras with internal steps.

An algebraic approach to weak and delay bismulation in coalgebra

The aim of this paper is to introduce an algebraic structure on the set of all coalgebras with the same state space over the given type which allows us to present definitions of weak and delay bisimulation for coalgebras. Additionally, we introduce an algebraic structure on the carrier set of the final coalgebra and characterize a special subcoalgebra of the final coalgebra which is used in the formulation of the weak coinduction principle. Finally, the new algebraic setting allows us to present a definition of an approximated weak bisimulation, study its properties and compare it with previously defined weak bisimulation for coalgebras.
