Kinetic energy represented in terms of moments of vorticity and applications

We study 2d vortex sheets with unbounded support. First we show a version of the Biot- Savart law related to a class of objects including such vortex sheets. Next, we give a formula associating the kinetic energy of a very general class of ows with certain moments of their vorticities. It allows us to identify a class of vortex sheets of unbounded support being only ?-finite measures (in particluar including measures ωsuch that ω(R2) = \infty), but with locally finite kinetic energy. One of such examples are celebrated Kaden approximations. We study them in details. In particular our estimates allow us to show that the kinetic energy of Kaden approximations in the neighbourhood of an origin is dissipated, actually we show that the energy is pushed out of any ball centered in the origin of the Kaden spiral. The latter result can be interpreted as an artificial viscosity in the center of a spiral.

Boundedness of solutions to the critical fully parabolic quasilinear one-dimensional Keller-Segel system

In this paper we consider a one-dimensional fully parabolic quasilinear Keller-Segel system with critical nonlinear diffusion. We show uniform-in-time boundedness of solutions, which means, that unlike in higher dimensions, there is no critical mass phenomenon in the case of critical diffusion. To this end we utilize estimates from a well-known Lyapunov functional and a recently introduced new Lyapunov-like functional in [3].

No critical nonlinear diffusion in 1D quasilinear fully parabolic chemotaxis system

This paper deals with the fully parabolic 1d chemotaxis system with diffusion 1/(1 + u). We prove that the above mentioned nonlinearity, despite being a natural candidate, is not critical. It means that for such a diffusion any initial condition, independently on the magnitude of mass, generates global-in-time solution. In view of our theorem one sees that one-dimensional Keller- Segel system is essentially different than its higher-dimensional versions. In order to prove our theorem we establish a new Lyapunov-like functional associated to the system. The information we gain from our new functional (together with some estimates based on the well-known old Lyapunov functional) turns out to be rich enough to establish global existence for the initial-boundary value problem.

Global existence in the 1D quasilinear parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with critical nonlinearity

The paper should be viewed as complement of an earlier result in [8]. In the paper just mentioned it is shown that 1d case of a quasilinear parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system is very special. Namely, unlike in higher dimensions, there is no critical nonlinearity. Indeed, for the nonlinear diffusion of the form 1/u all the solutions, independently on the magnitude of initial mass, stay bounded. However, the argument presented in [8] deals with the Jager-Luckhaus type system. And is very sensitive to this restriction. Namely, the change of variables introduced in [8], being a main step of the method, works only for the Jager-Luckhaus modification. It does not seem to be applicable in the usual version of the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system. The present paper fulfils this gap and deals with the case of the usual parabolic-elliptic version. To handle it we establish a new Lyapunov-like functional (it is related to what was done in [8]), which leads to global existence of the initial-boundary value problem for any initial mass.

Local criteria for blowup in two-dimensional chemotaxis models

We consider two-dimensional versions of the Keller--Segel model for the chemotaxis with either classical (Brownian) or fractional (anomalous) diffusion. Criteria for blowup of solutions in terms of suitable Morrey spaces norms are derived. Moreover, the impact of the consumption term on the global-in-time existence of solutions is analyzed for the classical Keller--Segel system.

Maximal dissipation in Hunter-Saxton equation for bounded energy initial data

In [Zhang and Zheng, 2005] it was conjectured by Zhang and Zheng that dissipative solutions of the Hunter-Saxton equation, which are known to be unique in the class of weak solutions, dissipate the energy at the highest possible rate. The conjecture of Zhang and Zheng was proven in [Dafermos, 2012] by Dafermos for monotone increasing initial data with bounded energy. In this note we prove the conjecture in [Zhang and Zheng, 2005] in full generality. To this end we examine the evolution of the energy of any weak solution of the Hunter-Saxton equation. Our proof shows in fact that for every time $t>0$ the energy of the dissipative solution is not greater than the energy of any weak solution with the same initial data.

New critical exponents in a fully parabolic quasilinear Keller-Segel and applications to volume filling models

We carry on our studies related to the fully parabolic quasilinear Keller-Segel system started in [6] and continued in [7]. In the above mentioned papers we proved finite-time blowup of radially symmetric solutions to the quasilinear Keller-Segel system if the nonlinear chemosensitivity is strong enough and an adequate relation between nonlinear diffusion and chemosensitivity holds. On the other hand we proved that once chemosensitivity is weak enough solutions exist globally in time. The present paper is devoted to looking for critical exponents distinguishing between those two behaviors. Moreover, we apply our results to the so-called volume filling models with a power-type probability jump function. The most important consequence of our investigations of the latter is a critical mass phenomenon found in dimension 2. Namely we find a value m0 such that when the solution to the two-dimensional volume filling Keller-Segel system starts with mass smaller than m0, then it is bounded, while for initial data with mass exceeding m0 solutions are unbounded, though being defined for any positive time.

Unboundedness of solutions to a supercritical quasilinear parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system in dimension 1 and to a critical one in higher dimensions

Unboundedness of solutions is shown to occur in a one-dimensional quasilinear parabolicparabolic chemotaxis system for any initial mass. Our result is also independent of the relation between the speeds of the diffusion of cells and chemoattractant. The proof is achieved by contradiction. It uses a virial type inequality together with a boundedness from below of the Liapunov functional associated to the system. Moreover, the same method is applied also in higher dimensions and an unboundedness result is shown in the case of critical quasilinear fully parabolic Keller-Segel system for mass large enough in dimensions n\geq 3. Key words: chemotaxis, infinite-time blowup.

Finite-time blowup in a supercritical quasilinear parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system in dimension 2

In this paper we prove finite-time blowup of radially symmetric solutions to the quasilinear parabolic-parabolic two-dimensional Keller-Segel system for any positive mass. This is done in case of nonlinear diffusion and also in the case of nonlinear cross-diffusion provided the nonlinear chemosensitivity term is assumed not to decay. Moreover, it is shown that the above-mentioned lack of non-decay assumption is essential with respect to keeping the dichotomy finite-time blowup against boundedness of solutions. Namely, we prove that without the non-decay assumption possible asymptotic behaviour of solutions includes also infinite-time blowup.

Finite-time blowup and global-in-time unbounded solutions to a parabolic-parabolic quasilinear Keller-Segel system in higher dimensions

In this paper we consider quasilinear Keller-Segel type systems of two kinds in higher dimensions. In the case of a nonlinear diffusion system we prove an optimal (with respect to possible nonlinear diffusions generating explosion in finite time of solutions) finite-time blowup result. In the case of a cross-diffusion system we give results which are optimal provided one assumes some proper non-decay of a nonlinear chemical sensitivity. Moreover, we show that once we do not assume the above mentioned non-decay, our result cannot be as strong as in the case of nonlinear diffusion without nonlinear cross-diffusion terms. To this end we provide an example, interesting by itself, of global-in-time unbounded solutions to the nonlinear cross-diffusion Keller-Segel system with chemical sensitivity decaying fast enough, in a range of parameters in which there is a finite-time blowup result in a corresponding case without nonlinear cross-diffusion.

Does the fully parabolic quasilinear 1D Keller-Segel system enjoy long-time asymptotics analogous to its parabolic-elliptic simplification?

We show that the one-dimensional fully parabolic Keller-Segel system with nonlinear diffusion possesses global-in-time solutions, provided the nonlinear diffusion is equal to (1+u)^{-α}, for α< 1, independently on the volume of the initial data. We also show that in the critical case, i.e. for α= 1, the same result holds for initial masses smaller than a prescribed constant. Additionally, we prove existence of initial data for which solution blows up in a finite time for any nonlinear diffusion integrable at infinity. Thus we generalize the known blowup result of parabolic-elliptic case to the fully parabolic one. However, in the parabolic-elliptic case the above mentioned integrability condition on nonlinear diffusion sharply distinguishes between global existence and blowup cases. We are unable to recover the entire global existence counterpart of this result in a fully parabolic case.

Looking for critical nonlinearity in the one-dimensional quasilinear Smoluchowski-Poisson system

It is known that classical solutions to the one-dimensional quasilinear Smoluchowski-Poisson system with nonlinear diffusion $a(u)=(1+u)^{-p}$ may blow up in finite time if $p>1$ and exist globally if $p<1$. The case $p=1$ thus appears to be critical but it turns out that all solutions are global also in that case. Two classes of diffusion coefficients are actually identified in this paper, one for which all solutions to the corresponding quasilinear Smoluchowski-Poisson system are global and the other one leading to finite time blow-up for sufficiently concentrated initial data. The cornerstone of the proof are an alternative formulation of the Smoluchowski-Poisson system which relies on a novel change of variables and a virial identity.

Finite time blow-up for a one-dimensional quasilinear parabolic-parabolic chemotaxis system

Finite time blow-up is shown to occur for solutions to a one-dimensional quasilinear parabolic-parabolic chemotaxis system as soon as the mean value of the initial condition exceeds some threshold value. The proof combines a novel identity of virial type with the boundedness from below of the Liapunov functional associated to the system, the latter being peculiar to the one-dimensional setting.
