Inverse problems for symmetric doubly stochastic matrices whose Suleĭmanova spectra are bounded below by 1/2

A new sufficient condition for a list of real numbers to be the spectrum of a symmetric doubly stochastic matrix is presented; this is a contribution to the classical spectral inverse problem for symmetric doubly stochastic matrices that is still open in its full generality. It is proved that whenever $λ_2, \ldots, λ_n$ are non-positive real numbers with $1 + λ_2 + \ldots + λ_n \geqslant 1/2$, then there exists a symmetric, doubly stochastic matrix whose spectrum is precisely $(1, λ_2, \ldots, λ_n)$. We point out that this criterion is incomparable to the classical sufficient conditions due to Perfect-Mirsky, Soules, and their modern refinements due to Nader et al. We also provide some examples and applications of our results.

Law equivalence of Ornstein--Uhlenbeck processes driven by a Lévy process

We demonstrate that two Ornstein--Uhlenbeck processes, that is, solutions to certain stochastic differential equations that are driven by a Lévy process L have equivalent laws as long as the eigenvalues of the covariance operator associated to the Wiener part of L are strictly positive. Moreover, we show that in the case where the underlying Lévy process is a purely jump process, which means that neither it has a Wiener part nor the drift, the absolute continuity of the law of one solution with respect to another forces equality of the solutions almost surely.

A letter concerning Leonetti's paper `Continuous Projections onto Ideal Convergent Sequences'

Leonetti proved that whenever $\mathcal I$ is an ideal on $\mathbb N$ such that there exists an~uncountable family of sets that are not in $\mathcal I$ with the property that the intersection of any two distinct members of that family is in $\mathcal I$, then the space $c_{0,\mathcal I}$ of sequences in $\ell_\infty$ that converge to 0 along $\mathcal I$ is not complemented. We provide a shorter proof of a more general fact that the quotient space $\ell_\infty / c_{0,\mathcal I}$ does not even embed into $\ell_\infty$.

Embedding Banach spaces into the space of bounded functions with countable support

We prove that a WLD subspace of the space $\ell_\infty^c(Γ)$ consisting of all bounded, countably supported functions on a set $Γ$ embeds isomorphically into $\ell_\infty$ if and only if it does not contain isometric copies of $c_0(ω_1)$. Moreover, a subspace of $\ell_\infty^c(ω_1)$ is constructed that has an unconditional basis, does not embed into $\ell_\infty$, and whose every weakly compact subset is separable (in particular, it cannot contain any isomorphic copies of $c_0(ω_1)$).

When is multiplication in a Banach algebra open?

We develop the theory of Banach algebras whose multiplication (regarded as a bilinear map) is open. We demonstrate that such algebras must have topological stable rank 1, however the latter condition is strictly weaker and implies only that products of non-empty open sets have non-empty interior. We then investigate openness of convolution in semigroup algebras resolving in the negative a problem of whether convolution in $\ell_1(\mathbb{N}_0)$ is open. By appealing to ultraproduct techniques, we demonstrate that neither in $\ell_1(\mathbb{Z})$ nor in $\ell_1(\mathbb Q)$ convolution is uniformly open. The problem of openness of multiplication in Banach algebras of bounded operators on Banach spaces and their Calkin algebras is also discussed.

Restricting uniformly open surjections

We employ the theory of elementary submodels to improve a recent result by Aron, Jaramillo and Le Donne (Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn. Math., to appear) concerning restricting uniformly open, continuous surjections to smaller subspaces where they remain surjective. To wit, suppose that $X$ and $Y$ are metric spaces and let $f\colon X\to Y$ be a continuous surjection. If $X$ is complete and $f$ is uniformly open, then $X$ contains a~closed subspace $Z$ with the same density as $Y$ such that $f$ restricted to $Z$ is still uniformly open and surjective. Moreover, if $X$ is a Banach space, then $Z$ may be taken to be a closed linear subspace. A counterpart of this theorem for uniform spaces is also established.

On bases that are closed under multiplication

It is well known that there is no basis of the field for real numbers regarded as a vector space over any proper subfield that is closed under multiplication. Mabry has extended this result to bases of arbitrary proper field extensions. The aim of this short communication is to notice that the proof of the result concerning the reals may be adjusted to a larger class of algebras (including full matrix algebras); thereby we subsume Mabry's result.

Vector-valued invariant means revisited once again

Banach spaces that are complemented in the second dual are characterised precisely as those spaces $X$ which enjoy the property that for every amenable semigroup $S$ there exists an $X$-valued analogue of an invariant mean defined on the Banach space of all bounded $X$-valued functions on $S$. This was first observed by Bustos Domecq (J. Math. Anal. Appl., 2002), however the original proof was slightly flawed as remarked by Lipecki. The primary aim of this note is to present a corrected version of the proof. We also demonstrate that universally separably injective spaces always admit invariant means with respect to countable amenable semigroups, thus such semigroups are not rich enough to capture complementation in the second dual as spaces falling into this class need not be complemented in the second dual.

Steinhaus' lattice-point problem for Banach spaces

Steinhaus proved that given a~positive integer $n$, one may find a circle surrounding exactly $n$ points of the integer lattice. This statement has been recently extended to Hilbert spaces by Zwoleński, who replaced the integer lattice by any infinite set that intersects every ball in at most finitely many points. We investigate Banach spaces satisfying this property, which we call (S), and characterise them by means of a new geometric property of the unit sphere which allows us to show, e.g., that all strictly convex norms have (S), nonetheless, there are plenty of non-strictly convex norms satisfying (S). We also study the corresponding renorming problem.

A singular, admissible extension which splits algebraically, but not strongly, of the algebra of bounded operators on a Banach space

Let $E$ be the Banach space constructed by Read (J. London Math. Soc. 1989) such that the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(E)$ of bounded operators on $E$ admits a discontinuous derivation. We show that $\mathscr{B}(E)$ has a singular, admissible extension which splits algebraically, but does not split strongly. This answers a natural question going back to the work of Bade, Dales, and Lykova (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 1999), and complements recent results of Laustsen and Skillicorn (C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris, to appear).

Uncountable sets of unit vectors that are separated by more than 1

Let $X$ be a Banach space. We study the circumstances under which there exists an uncountable set $\mathcal A\subset X$ of unit vectors such that $\|x-y\|>1$ for distinct $x,y\in \mathcal A$. We prove that such a set exists if $X$ is quasi-reflexive and non-separable; if $X$ is additionally super-reflexive then one can have $\|x-y\|\geqslant 1+\varepsilon$ for some $\varepsilon>0$ that depends only on $X$. If $K$ is a non-metrisable compact, Hausdorff space, then the unit sphere of $X=C(K)$ also contains such a subset; if moreover $K$ is perfectly normal, then one can find such a set with cardinality equal to the density of $X$; this solves a problem left open by S. K. Mercourakis and G. Vassiliadis.

Closed ideals of operators on and complemented subspaces of Banach spaces of functions with countable support

Let $λ$ be an infinite cardinal number and let $\ell_\infty^c(λ)$ denote the subspace of $\ell_\infty(λ)$ consisting of all functions that assume at most countably many non-zero values. We classify all infinite dimensional complemented subspaces of $\ell_\infty^c(λ)$, proving that they are isomorphic to $\ell_\infty^c(κ)$ for some cardinal number $κ$. Then we show that the Banach algebra of all bounded linear operators on $\ell_\infty^c(λ)$ or $\ell_\infty(λ)$ has the unique maximal ideal consisting of operators through which the identity operator does not factor. Using similar techniques, we obtain an alternative to Daws' approach description of the lattice of all closed ideals of $\mathscr{B}(X)$, where $X = c_0(λ)$ or $X=\ell_p(λ)$ for some $p\in [1,\infty)$, and we classify the closed ideals of $\mathscr{B}(\ell_\infty^c(λ))$ that contains the ideal of weakly compact operators.

Ideal structure of the algebra of bounded operators acting on a Banach space

We construct a Banach space $Z$ such that the lattice of closed two-sided ideals of the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(Z)$ of bounded operators on $Z$ is as follows: $$ \{0\}\subset \mathscr{K}(Z)\subset\mathscr{E}(Z) \raisebox{-.5ex}% {\ensuremath{\overset{\begin{turn}{30}$\subset$\end{turn}}% {\begin{turn}{-30}$\subset$\end{turn}}}}\!\!% \begin{array}{c}\mathscr{M}_1\\[1mm]\mathscr{M}_2\end{array}\!\!\!% \raisebox{-1.25ex}% {\ensuremath{\overset{\raisebox{1.25ex}{\ensuremath{\begin{turn}{-30}$\subset$\end{turn}}}}% {\raisebox{-.25ex}{\ensuremath{\begin{turn}{30}$\subset$\end{turn}}}}}}\,\mathscr{B}(Z) $$ We then determine which kinds of approximate identities (bounded/left/right), if any, each of the four non-trivial closed ideals of $\mathscr{B}(Z)$ contain, and we show that the maximal ideal $\mathscr{M}_1$ is generated as a left ideal by two operators, but not by a single operator, thus answering a question left open in our collaboration with Dales, Kochanek and Koszmider (\emph{Studia Math.} 2013). In contrast, the other maximal ideal $\mathscr{M}_2$ is not finitely generated as a left ideal. The Banach space $Z$ is the direct sum of Argyros and Haydon's Banach space $X_{\text{AH}}$ which has very few operators and a certain subspace $Y$ of $X_{\text{AH}}$. The key property of~$Y$ is that every bounded operator from $Y$ into $X_{\text{AH}}$ is the sum of a scalar multiple of the inclusion mapping and a compact operator.

Chains of functions in $C(K)$-spaces

The Bishop property ($\symbishop$), introduced recently by K.P. Hart, T. Kochanek and the first-named author, was motivated by Pełczy{ń}ski's classical work on weakly compact operators on $C(K)$-spaces. This property asserts that certain chains of functions in said spaces, with respect to a particular partial ordering, must be countable. There are two versions of ($\symbishop$): one applies to linear operators on $C(K)$-spaces and the other to the compact Hausdorff spaces themselves. We answer two questions that arose after ($\symbishop$) was first introduced. We show that if $\mathscr{D}$ is a class of compact spaces that is preserved when taking closed subspaces and Hausdorff quotients, and which contains no non-metrizable linearly ordered space, then every member of $\mathscr{D}$ has ($\symbishop$). Examples of such classes include all $K$ for which $C(K)$ is Lindelöf in the topology of pointwise convergence (for instance, all Corson compact spaces) and the class of Gruenhage compact spaces. We also show that the set of operators on a $C(K)$-space satisfying ($\symbishop$) does not form a right ideal in $\mathscr{B}(C(K))$. Some results regarding local connectedness are also presented.
