Exactly solvable model of two interacting Rydberg-dressed atoms confined in a two-dimensional harmonic trap

Exactly solvable model of two Rydberg-dressed atoms moving in a quasi-two-dimensional harmonic trap is introduced and its properties are investigated. Depending on the strength of inter-particle interactions and the critical range of the potential, the two-particle eigenstates are classified with respect to the excitations of the center-of-mass motion, relative angular momentum, and relative distance variable. Having these solutions in hand, we discuss inter-particle correlations as functions of interaction parameters. We also present a straightforward prescription of how to generalize obtained solutions to higher dimensions.

Momentum correlations of a few ultra-cold bosons escaping from an open well

The dynamical properties of a one-dimensional system of two and three bosons escaping from an open potential well are studied in terms of the momentum distributions of particles. In the case of a two-boson system, it is shown that the single- and two-particle momentum distributions undergo a specific transition as the interaction strength is tuned through the point where tunneling switches from the pair tunneling to the sequential one. Characteristic features in the momentum spectra can be used to quantitatively determine the participation of specific decay processes. A corresponding analysis is also performed for the three-boson system, showing a scheme for generalizations to higher particle numbers. For completeness, the time-dependent Tan's contact of the system is also examined and its dynamics is found to undergo a similar transition. The results provide insight into the dynamics of decaying few-body systems and offer potential interest for experimental research.

Intercomponent correlations in attractive one-dimensional mass-imbalanced few-body mixtures

Ground-state properties of a few attractively interacting ultra-cold atoms of different mass confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap are studied in terms of the correlation noise. Depending on the mass ratio between the components' atoms, the inter-particle correlations change their properties significantly from a strong pair-like correlation to an almost uncorrelated phase. This change is accompanied by the undergoing change in the structure of the many-body ground state. A crucial role of the quantum statistics is emphasized by comparing properties of the Fermi-Fermi mixture with a corresponding Fermi-Bose system.

Variational approach for interacting ultra-cold atoms in arbitrary one-dimensional confinement

Standard analytical construction of the many-body wave function of interacting particles in one dimension, beyond mean-field theory, is based on the Jastrow approach. The many-body interacting ground state is build up from the ground state of the non-interacting system and the product of solutions of the corresponding interacting two-body problem. However, this is possible only if the center-of-mass motion is decoupled from the mutual interactions. In our work, based on the general constraints given by contact nature of the atom-atom interactions, we present an alternative approach to the standard construction of the \textit{pair-correlation} wave-function. Within the proposed ansatz, we study the many-body properties of trapped bosons as well as fermionic mixtures and we compare these predictions with the exact diagonalization approach in a wide range of particle numbers, interaction strengths, and different trapping potentials.

Dynamics of a few interacting bosons escaping from an open well

The dynamics of a few ultra-cold bosons tunneling from a one-dimensional potential well into open space is studied. In such a system several decay channels can be distinguished, each corresponding to a different number of bosons escaping simultaneously. We show that as the interparticle interaction strength is changed, the system undergoes transitions between distinct regimes characterized by the dominance of different decay channels. These transitions are reflected in the behavior of the decay rate of the system, which is measurable experimentally. By means of a simple theoretical description we show that the transitions occur at the points where a new decay channel becomes energetically viable. The results provide insight into the behavior of decaying few-body systems and may have potential interest to experiments.

Simulating polaron biophysics with Rydberg atoms

Transport of excitations along proteins can be formulated in a quantum physics context, based on the periodicity and vibrational modes of the structures. Exact solutions are very challenging to obtain on classical computers, however, approximate solutions based on the Davydov ansatz have demonstrated the possibility of stabilized solitonic excitations along the protein. We propose an alternative study based on a chain of ultracold atoms. We investigate the experimental parameters to control such a quantum simulator based on dressed Rydberg atoms. We show that there is a feasible range of parameters where a quantum simulator can directly mimic the Davydov equations and their solutions. Such a quantum simulator opens up new directions for the study of transport phenomena in a biophysical context.

Few-fermion thermometry

Potential realization of a quantum thermometer operating in the nanokelvin regime, formed by a few-fermionic mixture confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap, is proposed. Thermal states of the system are studied theoretically from the point of view of fundamental sensitivity to temperature changes. It is pointed out that the ability to control the interaction strength in such systems allows obtaining high-temperature sensitivity in the regime where the temperature is much lower than the characteristic temperature scale determined by a harmonic confinement. This sensitivity is very close to the fundamental bound that involves optimal engineering of level separations. The performance of practical measurement schemes and the possible experimental coupling of the thermometer to the probe are discussed.

Numerically exact approach to few-body problems far from a perturbative regime

Recent developments of experimental techniques in the field of ultra-cold gases open a path to study the crossover from 'few' to 'many' on the quantum level. In this case, accurate description of inter-particle correlations is very important since it is believed that they can be utilized by quantum engineers in quantum metrology, quantum thermometry, quantum heat engines, {\it etc}. Unfortunately, a theoretical description of these correlations is very challenging since they are far beyond any variational approaches. By contrast, the exact many-body description rapidly hits numerical limitations due to an exponential increase of the many-body Hilbert space. In this work, we brush up a very effective method of constructing a many-body basis which originates in the physical argumentation. We show that, in contrast to the commonly used approach of a straightforward cut-off, it enables one to perform exact calculations with very limited numerical resources. As examples, we study quantum correlations in systems of spinless bosons and two-component mixtures of fermions confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap being far from the perturbative regime.

Global optimization for quantum dynamics of few-fermion systems

Quantum state preparation is vital to quantum computation and quantum information processing tasks. In adiabatic state preparation, the target state is theoretically obtained with nearly perfect fidelity if the control parameter is tuned slowly enough. As this, however, leads to slow dynamics, it is often desirable to be able to do processes faster. In this work, we employ two global optimization methods to estimate the quantum speed limit for few-fermion systems confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. Such systems can be produced experimentally in a well controlled manner. We determine the optimized control fields and achieve a reduction in the ramping time of more than a factor of four compared to linear ramping. We also investigate how robust the fidelity is to small variations of the control fields away from the optimized shapes.

Ground-State Magnetization in Mixtures of a Few Ultra-Cold Fermions in One-Dimensional Traps

Ground-state properties of a few spin-$1/2$ ultra-cold fermions confined in a one-dimensional trap are studied by the exact diagonalization method. In contrast to previous studies, it is not assumed that the projection of a spin of individual particles is fixed. Therefore, the spin is treated as an additional degree of freedom and the global magnetization of the system is established spontaneously. Depending on the shape of the trap, inter-particle interactions, and an external magnetic field, the phase diagram of the system is determined. It is shown that, for particular confinements, some values of the magnetization cannot be reached by the ground-state of the system.

Effective three-body interactions for bosons in a double-well confinement

When describing the low-energy physics of bosons in a double-well potential with a high barrier between the wells and sufficiently weak atom-atom interactions, one can to a good approximation ignore the high energy states and thereby obtain an effective two-mode model. Here, we show that the regime in which the two-mode model is valid can be extended by adding an on-site three-body interaction term and a three-body interaction-induced tunneling term to the two-mode Hamiltonian. These terms effectively account for virtual transitions to the higher energy states. We determine appropriate strengths of the three-body terms by an optimization of the minimal value of the wave function overlap within a certain time window. Considering different initial states with three or four atoms, we find that the resulting model accurately captures the dynamics of the system for parameters where the two-mode model without the three-body terms is poor. We also investigate the dependence of the strengths of the three-body terms on the barrier height and the atom-atom interaction strength. The optimal three-body interaction strengths depend on the initial state of the system.

Exactly solvable model of two trapped quantum particles interacting via finite-range soft-core interactions

The exactly solvable model of two indistinguishable quantum particles (bosons or fermions) confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap and interacting via finite-range soft-core interaction is presented and many properties of the system are examined. Particularly, it is shown that independently on the potential range, in the strong interaction limit bosonic and fermionic solutions become degenerate. For sufficiently large ranges a specific crystallization appears in the system. The results are compared to predictions of the celebrated Busch {\it et al.} model and those obtained in the Tonks-Girardeau limit. The assumed inter-particle potential is very similar to the potential between ultra-cold dressed Rydberg atoms. Therefore, the model can be examined experimentally.

Effective two-mode description of a few ultra-cold bosons in a double-well potential

We present a construction of an improved two-mode model for modeling the dynamics of interacting ultra-cold bosons confined in a one-dimensional double well trap. Unlike in the typically used two-mode model based on the lowest single-particle eigenstates of the external potential, the improved model uses a basis of properly chosen effective wave functions originating in the many-body model. Accuracy of the improved model is examined and it is shown that within a certain limit of inter-particle interaction strength, the model recovers an exact evolution of the wells' populations much more closely than the traditional two-mode model.

Experimentally accessible invariants encoded in interparticle correlations of harmonically trapped ultra-cold few-fermion mixtures

System of a two-flavor mixture of ultra-cold fermions confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap is studied in the frame of the center of mass. We present a numerical method of obtaining energetic spectra in this frame for an arbitrary mass ratio of fermionic species. We identify a specific invariant encoded in many-body correlations which enable one to determine an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian and to label excitations of the center of mass. The tool presented may be particularly useful in experimental analysis of the interparticle interactions which do not affect the center of mass excitations in a harmonic potential.

On the observability of Pauli crystals

The best known manifestation of the Fermi-Dirac statistics is the Pauli exclusion principle: no two identical fermions can occupy the same one-particle state. This principle enforces high order correlations in systems of many identical fermions and is responsible for a particular geometric arrangement of trapped particles even when all mutual interactions are absent [1]. These geometric structures, called Pauli crystals, are predicted for a system of $N$ identical atoms trapped in a harmonic potential. They emerge as the most frequent configurations in a collection of single-shot pictures of the system. Here we study how fragile Pauli crystals are when realistic experimental limitations are taken into account. The influence of the number of single-shots pictures available to analysis, thermal fluctuations and finite efficiency of detection are considered. The role of these sources of noise on the possibility of experimental observation of Pauli crystals is shown and conditions necessary for the detection of the geometrical arrangements of particles are identified.

Four fermions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap: Accuracy of a variational-ansatz approach

Detailed analysis of the system of four interacting ultra-cold fermions confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap is performed. The analysis is done in the framework of a simple variational ansatz for the many-body ground state and its predictions are confronted with the results of numerically exact diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian. Short discussion on the role of the quantum statistics, i.e. Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi mixtures is also presented. It is concluded that the variational ansatz, although seemed to be oversimplified, gives surprisingly good predictions of many different quantities for mixtures of equal as well as different mass systems. The result may have some experimental importance since it gives quite simple and validated method for describing experimental outputs.

Two bosonic quantum walkers in one-dimensional optical lattices

Dynamical properties of two bosonic quantum walkers in a one-dimensional lattice are studied theoretically. Depending on the initial state, interactions, lattice tilting, and lattice disorder, whole plethora of different behaviors are observed. Particularly, it is shown that two bosons system manifests the many-body localization like behavior in the presence of a quenched disorder. The whole analysis is based on a specific decomposition of the temporal density profile into different contributions from singly and doubly occupied sites. In this way, the role of interactions is extracted. Since the contributions can be directly measured in experiments with ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices, the predictions presented may have some importance for upcoming experiment.

Few strongly interacting ultracold fermions in one-dimensional traps of different shapes

The ground-state properties of a few spin-1/2 fermions with different masses and interacting via short-range contact forces are studied within an exact diagonalization approach. It is shown that, depending on the shape of the external confinement, different scenarios of the spatial separation between components manifested by specific shapes of the density profiles can be obtained in the strong interaction limit. We find that the ground-state of the system undergoes a specific transition between orderings when the confinement is changed adiabatically from a uniform box to a harmonic oscillator shape. We study the properties of this transition in the framework of the finite-size scaling method adopted to few-body systems.
