A Sharp Gaussian Tail Bound for Sums of Uniforms

We prove that the tail probabilities of sums of independent uniform random variables, up to a multiplicative constant, are dominated by the Gaussian tail with matching variance and find the sharp constant for such stochastic domination.

From simplex slicing to sharp reverse Hölder inequalities

Simplex slicing (Webb, 1996) is a sharp upper bound on the volume of central hyperplane sections of the regular simplex. We extend this to sharp bounds in the probabilistic framework of negative moments, and beyond, of centred log-concave random variables, establishing a curious phase transition of the extremising distribution for new sharp reverse Hölder-type inequalities.

Moments of sums of exponentials, beyond CHS

We establish a sharp lower bound on the $L_p$-norm of sums of independent exponential random variables with fixed variance, for $p \geq 2$, thus extending Hunter's positivity theorem (1976) for completely homogeneous polynomials. We determine the exact regime of $p$ where such sums enjoy Schur-monotonicity.

Negative Moments of Steinhaus Sums

We prove a sharp upper bound on negative moments of sums of independent Steinhaus random variables (that is uniform on circles in the plane). Together with the series of earlier works: König-Kwapień (2001), Baernstein II-Culverhouse (2002), and König (2014), this closes the investigation of sharp $L_p-L_2$ Khinchin-type inequalities for the Steinhaus sums. Incidentally, we fix a mistake in an earlier paper, as well as provide an application to sharp bounds on Rényi entropy.

Stability of simplex slicing

We establish dimension-free stability of Webb's sharp simplex slicing (1996). Incidentally, we investigate Lipschitzness of volume of hyperplane central sections of arbitrary (not necessarily symmetric) convex bodies.

A Rényi entropy interpretation of anti-concentration and noncentral sections of convex bodies

We extend Bobkov and Chistyakov's (2015) upper bounds on concentration functions of sums of independent random variables to a multivariate entropic setting. The approach is based on pointwise estimates on densities of sums of independent random vectors uniform on centred Euclidean balls. In this vein, we also obtain sharp bounds on volumes of noncentral sections of isotropic convex bodies.

Stability of polydisc slicing

We prove a dimension-free stability result for polydisc slicing due to Oleszkiewicz and Pelczyński (2000). Intriguingly, compared to the real case, there is an additional asymptotic maximiser. In addition to Fourier-analytic bounds, we crucially rely on a self-improving feature of polydisc slicing, established via probabilistic arguments.

Resilience of cube slicing in $\ell_p$

Ball's celebrated cube slicing (1986) asserts that among hyperplane sections of the cube in $\mathbb{R}^n$, the central section orthogonal to $(1,1,0,\dots,0)$ has the greatest volume. We show that the same continues to hold for slicing $\ell_p$ balls when $p > 10^{15}$, as well as that the same hyperplane minimizes the volume of projections of $\ell_q$ balls for $1 < q < 1 + 10^{-12}$. This extends Szarek's optimal Khinchin inequality (1976) which corresponds to $q=1$. These results thus address the resilience of the Ball--Szarek hyperplane in the ranges $2 < p < \infty$ and $1 < q < 2$, where analysis of the extremizers has been elusive since the works of Koldobsky (1998), Barthe--Naor (2002) and Oleszkiewicz (2003).

Distributional stability of the Szarek and Ball inequalities

We prove an extension of Szarek's optimal Khinchin inequality (1976) for distributions close to the Rademacher one, when all the weights are uniformly bounded by a $1/\sqrt2$ fraction of their total $\ell_2$-mass. We also show a similar extension of the probabilistic formulation of Ball's cube slicing inequality (1986). These results establish the distributional stability of these optimal Khinchin-type inequalities. The underpinning to such estimates is the Fourier-analytic approach going back to Haagerup (1981).

Extremal sections and projections of certain convex bodies: a survey

We survey results concerning sharp estimates on volumes of sections and projections of certain convex bodies, mainly $\ell_p$ balls, by and onto lower dimensional subspaces. This subject emerged from geometry of numbers several decades ago and since then has seen development of a variety of probabilistic and analytic methods, showcased in this survey.

Haagerup's phase transition at polydisc slicing

We establish a sharp comparison inequality between the negative moments and the second moment of the magnitude of sums of independent random vectors uniform on three-dimensional Euclidean spheres. This provides a probabilistic extension of the Oleszkiewicz-Pelczyński polydisc slicing result. The Haagerup-type phase transition occurs exactly when the p-norm recovers volume, in contrast to the real case. We also obtain partial results in higher dimensions.

Typical values of extremal-weight combinatorial structures with independent symmetric weights

Suppose that the edges of a complete graph are assigned weights independently at random and we ask for the weight of the minimal-weight spanning tree, or perfect matching, or Hamiltonian cycle. For these and several other common optimisation problems, we establish asymptotically tight bounds when the weights are independent copies of a symmetric random variable (satisfying a mild condition on tail probabilities), in particular when the weights are Gaussian.

Complex Hanner's Inequality for Many Functions

We establish Hanner's inequality for arbitrarily many functions in the setting where the Rademacher distribution is replaced with higher dimensional random vectors uniform on Euclidean spheres.

Entropies of sums of independent gamma random variables

We establish several Schur-convexity type results under fixed variance for weighted sums of independent gamma random variables and obtain nonasymptotic bounds on their Rényi entropies. In particular, this pertains to the recent results by Bartczak-Nayar-Zwara as well as Bobkov-Naumov-Ulyanov, offering simple proofs of the former and extending the latter.
