Universal decay of classical Loschmidt echo of neutrally stable but mixing dynamics

We provide analytical and numerical evidence that classical mixing systems which lack exponential sensitivity on initial conditions, exhibit universal decay of Loschmidt echo which turns out to be a function of a single scaled time variable delta^(2/5)t, where delta is the strength of perturbation. The role of dynamical instability and entropy production is discussed.

Quantum chaos and the double-slit experiment

We report on the numerical simulation of the double-slit experiment, where the initial wave-packet is bounded inside a billiard domain with perfectly reflecting walls. If the shape of the billiard is such that the classical ray dynamics is regular, we obtain interference fringes whose visibility can be controlled by changing the parameters of the initial state. However, if we modify the shape of the billiard thus rendering classical (ray) dynamics fully chaotic, the interference fringes disappear and the intensity on the screen becomes the (classical) sum of intensities for the two corresponding one-slit experiments. Thus we show a clear and fundamental example in which transition to chaotic motion in a deterministic classical system, in absence of any external noise, leads to a profound modification in the quantum behaviour.

Quantum freeze of fidelity decay for chaotic dynamics

We show that the mechanism of quantum freeze of fidelity decay for perturbations with zero time-average, recently discovered for a specific case of integrable dynamics [New J. Phys. 5 (2003) 109], can be generalized to arbitrary quantum dynamics. We work out explicitly the case of chaotic classical counterpart, for which we find semi-classical expressions for the value and the range of the plateau of fidelity. After the plateau ends, we find explicit expressions for the asymptotic decay, which can be exponential or Gaussian depending on the ratio of the Heisenberg time to the decay time. Arbitrary initial states can be considered, e.g. we discuss coherent states and random states.

Faster than Lyapunov decays of classical Loshcmidt echo

We show that in the classical interaction picture the echo-dynamics, namely the composition of perturbed forward and unperturbed backward hamiltonian evolution, can be treated as a time-dependent hamiltonian system. For strongly chaotic (Anosov) systems we derive a cascade of exponential decays for the classical Loschmidt echo, starting with the leading Lyapunov exponent, followed by a sum of two largest exponents, etc. In the loxodromic case a decay starts with the rate given as twice the largest Lyapunov exponent. For a class of perturbations of symplectic maps the echo-dynamics exhibits a drift resulting in a super-exponential decay of the Loschmidt echo.

Quantum freeze of fidelity decay for a class of integrable dynamics

We discuss quantum fidelity decay of classically regular dynamics, in particular for an important special case of a vanishing time averaged perturbation operator, i.e. vanishing expectation values of the perturbation in the eigenbasis of unperturbed dynamics. A complete semiclassical picture of this situation is derived in which we show that the quantum fidelity of individual coherent initial states exhibits three different regimes in time: (i) first it follows the corresponding classical fidelity up to time t1=hbar^(-1/2), (ii) then it freezes on a plateau of constant value, (iii) and after a time scale t_2=min[hbar^(1/2) delta^(-2),hbar^(-1/2) delta^(-1)] it exhibits fast ballistic decay as exp(-const. delta^4 t^2/hbar) where delta is a strength of perturbation. All the constants are computed in terms of classical dynamics for sufficiently small effective value hbar of the Planck constant. A similar picture is worked out also for general initial states, and specifically for random initial states, where t_1=1, and t_2=delta^(-1). This prolonged stability of quantum dynamics in the case of a vanishing time averaged perturbation could prove to be useful in designing quantum devices. Theoretical results are verified by numerical experiments on the quantized integrable top.

Fourier law in the alternate mass hard-core potential chain

We study energy transport in a one-dimensional model of elastically colliding particles with alternate masses $m$ and $M$. In order to prevent total momentum conservation we confine particles with mass $M$ inside a cell of finite size. We provide convincing numerical evidence for the validity of Fourier law of heat conduction in spite of the lack of exponential dynamical instability. Comparison with previous results on similar models shows the relevance of the role played by total momentum conservation.

Estimating purity in terms of correlation functions

We prove a rigorous inequality estimating the purity of a reduced density matrix of a composite quantum system in terms of cross-correlation of the same state and an arbitrary product state. Various immediate applications of our result are proposed, in particular concerning Gaussian wave-packet propagation under classically regular dynamics.

Theory of quantum Loschmidt echoes

In this paper we review our recent work on the theoretical approach to quantum Loschmidt echoes, i.e. various properties of the so called echo dynamics -- the composition of forward and backward time evolutions generated by two slightly different Hamiltonians, such as the state autocorrelation function (fidelity) and the purity of a reduced density matrix traced over a subsystem (purity fidelity). Our main theoretical result is a linear response formalism, expressing the fidelity and purity fidelity in terms of integrated time autocorrelation function of the generator of the perturbation. Surprisingly, this relation predicts that the decay of fidelity is the slower the faster the decay of correlations. In particular for a static (time-independent) perturbation, and for non-ergodic and non-mixing dynamics where asymptotic decay of correlations is absent, a qualitatively different and faster decay of fidelity is predicted on a time scale 1/delta as opposed to mixing dynamics where the fidelity is found to decay exponentially on a time-scale 1/delta^2, where delta is a strength of perturbation. A detailed discussion of a semi-classical regime of small effective values of Planck constant is given where classical correlation functions can be used to predict quantum fidelity decay. Note that the correct and intuitively expected classical stability behavior is recovered in the classical limit, as the perturbation and classical limits do not commute. The theoretical results are demonstrated numerically for two models, the quantized kicked top and the multi-level Jaynes Cummings model. Our method can for example be applied to the stability analysis of quantum computation and quantum information processing.

Evolution of entanglement under echo dynamics

Echo dynamics and fidelity are often used to discuss stability in quantum information processing and quantum chaos. Yet fidelity yields no information about entanglement, the characteristic property of quantum mechanics. We study the evolution of entanglement in echo dynamics. We find qualitatively different behavior between integrable and chaotic systems on one hand and between random and coherent initial states for integrable systems on the other. For the latter the evolution of entanglement is given by a classical time scale. Analytic results are illustrated numerically in a Jaynes Cummings model.

Fidelity and Purity Decay in Weakly Coupled Composite Systems

We study the stability of unitary quantum dynamics of composite systems (for example: central system + environment) with respect to weak interaction between the two parts. Unified theoretical formalism is applied to study different physical situations: (i) coherence of a forward evolution as measured by purity of the reduced density matrix, (ii) stability of time evolution with respect to small coupling between subsystems, and (iii) Loschmidt echo measuring dynamical irreversibility. Stability has been measured either by fidelity of pure states of a composite system, or by the so-called reduced fidelity of reduced density matrices within a subsystem. Rigorous inequality among fidelity, reduced-fidelity and purity is proved and a linear response theory is developed expressing these three quantities in terms of time correlation functions of the generator of interaction. The qualitatively different cases of regular (integrable) or mixing (chaotic in the classical limit) dynamics in each of the subsystems are discussed in detail. Theoretical results are demonstrated and confirmed in a numerical example of two coupled kicked tops.

Anomalous Heat Conduction in a Di-atomic One-Dimensional Ideal Gas

We provide firm convincing evidence that the energy transport in a one-dimensional gas of elastically colliding free particles of unequal masses is anomalous, i.e. the Fourier Law does not hold. Our conclusions are based on the analysis of the dependence of the heat current on the number of particles, of the internal temperature profile and on the Green-Kubo formalism.

Decoherence of spin echoes

We define a quantity, the so-called purity fidelity, which measures the rate of dynamical irreversibility due to decoherence, observed e.g in echo experiments, in the presence of an arbitrary small perturbation of the total (system + environment) Hamiltonian. We derive a linear response formula for the purity fidelity in terms of integrated time correlation functions of the perturbation. Our relation predicts, similarly to the case of fidelity decay, faster decay of purity fidelity the slower decay of time correlations is. In particular, we find exponential decay in quantum mixing regime and faster, initially quadratic and later typically gaussian decay in the regime of non-ergodic, e.g. integrable quantum dynamics. We illustrate our approach by an analytical calculation and numerical experiments in the Ising spin 1/2 chain kicked with tilted homogeneous magnetic field where part of the chain is interpreted as a system under observation and part as an environment.

Stability of quantum motion and correlation decay

We derive a simple and general relation between the fidelity of quantum motion, characterizing the stability of quantum dynamics with respect to arbitrary static perturbation of the unitary evolution propagator, and the integrated time auto-correlation function of the generator of perturbation. Surprisingly, this relation predicts the slower decay of fidelity the faster decay of correlations is. In particular, for non-ergodic and non-mixing dynamics, where asymptotic decay of correlations is absent, a qualitatively different and faster decay of fidelity is predicted on a time scale 1/delta as opposed to mixing dynamics where the fidelity is found to decay exponentially on a time-scale 1/delta^2, where delta is a strength of perturbation. A detailed discussion of a semi-classical regime of small effective values of Planck constant is given where classical correlation functions can be used to predict quantum fidelity decay. Note that the correct and intuitively expected classical stability behavior is recovered in the classical limit hbar->0, as the two limits delta->0 and hbar->0 do not commute. In addition we also discuss non-trivial dependence on the number of degrees of freedom. All the theoretical results are clearly demonstrated numerically on a celebrated example of a quantized kicked top.

On general relation between quantum ergodicity and fidelity of quantum dynamics

General relation is derived which expresses the fidelity of quantum dynamics, measuring the stability of time evolution to small static variation in the hamiltonian, in terms of ergodicity of an observable generating the perturbation as defined by its time correlation function. Fidelity for ergodic dynamics is predicted to decay exponentially on time-scale proportional to delta^(-2) where delta is the strength of perturbation, whereas faster, typically gaussian decay on shorter time scale proportional to delta^(-1) is predicted for integrable, or generally non-ergodic dynamics. This surprising result is demonstrated in quantum Ising spin-1/2 chain periodically kicked with a tilted magnetic field where we find finite parameter-space regions of non-ergodic and non-integrable motion in thermodynamic limit.

$\hbar \to 0$ in Kicked Harper Model: Reassurances and Surprises

We investigate classical-quantum correspondence for kicked Harper model for extremely small values of the Planck constant $\hbar$. In the asymmetric case a pure quantum state shows clear signature of classical diffusive as well as super diffusive transitions asymptotically independent of $\hbar$. However, for the symmetric case, the $\hbar$ independent behavior occurs only for renormalized parameter $\bar{K}=K/(2\hbar)$ with intriguing features such as a sharp transition from integrable to non-integrable transport at $\bar{K}=π/2$, a series of transitions at multiples of $π$ and periodicity of the transmission probability. These results add new puzzles to the frontiers of quantum chaos.

Can quantum chaos enhance stability of quantum computation?

We consider stability of a general quantum algorithm with respect to a fixed but unknown residual interaction between qubits, and show a surprising fact, namely that the average fidelity of quantum computation increases by decreasing average time correlation function of the perturbing operator in sequences of consecutive quantum gates. Our thinking is applied to the quantum Fourier transformation where an alternative 'less regular' quantum algorithm is devised which is qualitatively more robust against static random residual n-qubit interaction.

Random-Matrix Ensembles for Semi-Separable Systems

Many models for chaotic systems consist of joining two integrable systems with incompatible constants of motion. The quantum counterparts of such models have a propagator which factorizes into two integrable parts. Each part can be diagonalized. The two eigenvector bases are related by an orthogonal (or unitary) transformation. We construct a random matrix ensemble that mimics this situation and consists of a product of a diagonal, an orthogonal, another diagonal and the transposed orthogonal matrix. The diagonal phases are chosen at random and the orthogonal matrix from Haar's measure. We derive asymptotic results (dimension N -> \infty) using Wick contractions. A new approximation for the group integration yields the next order in 1/N. We obtain a finite correction to the circular orthogonal ensemble, important in the long-range part of spectral correlations.

Anomalous diffusion and dynamical localization in a parabolic map

We study numerically classical and quantum dynamics of a piecewise parabolic area preserving map on a cylinder which emerges from the bounce map of elongated triangular billiards. The classical map exhibits anomalous diffusion. Quantization of the same map results in a system with dynamical localization and pure point spectrum.
