Blow-up exponents and a semilinear elliptic equation for the fractional Laplacian on hyperbolic spaces

Let $\mathbb{H}^n$ be the $n$-dimensional real hyperbolic space, $\Delta$ its nonnegative Laplace--Beltrami operator whose bottom of the spectrum we denote by $\lambda_{0}$, and $\sigma \in (0,1)$. The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, we determine the Fujita exponent for the fractional heat equation \[\partial_{t} u + \Delta^{\sigma}u = e^{\beta t}|u|^{\gamma-1}u,\] by proving that nontrivial positive global solutions exist if and only if $\gamma\geq 1 + \beta/ \lambda_{0}^{\sigma}$. On the other hand, we prove the existence of non-negative, bounded and finite energy solutions of the semilinear fractional elliptic equation \[ \Delta^{\sigma} v - \lambda^{\sigma} v - v^{\gamma}=0 \] for $0\leq \lambda \leq \lambda_{0}$ and $1<\gamma< \frac{n+2\sigma}{n-2\sigma}$. The two problems are known to be connected and the latter, aside from its independent interest, is actually instrumental to the former. \smallskip At the core of our results stands a novel fractional Poincar\'e-type inequality expressed in terms of a new scale of $L^{2}$ fractional Sobolev spaces, which sharpens those known so far, and which holds more generally on Riemannian symmetric spaces of non-compact type. We also establish an associated Rellich--Kondrachov-like compact embedding theorem for radial functions, along with other related properties.

Boundedness properties of the maximal operator in a nonsymmetric inverse Gaussian setting

We introduce a generalized inverse Gaussian setting and consider the maximal operator associated with the natural analogue of a nonsymmetric Ornstein--Uhlenbeck semigroup. We prove that it is bounded on $L^{p}$ when $p\in (1,\infty]$ and that it is of weak type $(1,1)$, with respect to the relevant measure. For small values of the time parameter $t$, the proof hinges on the "forbidden zones" method previously introduced in the Gaussian context. But for large times the proof requires new tools.

Pointwise convergence to initial data for some evolution equations on symmetric spaces

Let $\mathscr{L}$ be either the Laplace--Beltrami operator, its shift without spectral gap, or the distinguished Laplacian on a symmetric space of noncompact type $\mathbb{X}$ of arbitrary rank. We consider the heat equation, the fractional heat equation, and the Caffarelli--Silvestre extension problem associated with $\mathscr{L}$, and in each of these cases we characterize the weights $v$ on $\mathbb{X}$ for which the solution converges pointwise a.e. to the initial data when the latter is in $L^{p}(v)$, $1\leq p < \infty$. As a tool, we also establish vector-valued weak type $(1,1)$ and $L^{p}$ estimates ($1<p<\infty$) for the local Hardy--Littlewood maximal function on $\mathbb{X}$.

Pointwise multipliers for Triebel--Lizorkin and Besov spaces on Lie groups

On a general Lie group $G$ endowed with a sub-Riemannian structure and of local dimension $d$, we characterize the pointwise multipliers of Triebel--Lizorkin spaces $F^{p,q}_α$ for $p,q\in (1,\infty)$ and $α>d/p$, and those of Besov spaces $B^{p,q}_α$ for $q\in [1,\infty]$, $p>d$ and $d/p< α<1$. When $G$ is stratified, we extend the latter characterization to all $p,q\in [1,\infty]$ and $α>d/p$.

Optimal heat kernel bounds and asymptotics on Damek--Ricci spaces

We give optimal bounds for the radial, space and time derivatives of arbitrary order of the heat kernel of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on Damek--Ricci spaces. In the case of symmetric spaces of rank one, these complete and actually improve conjectured estimates by Anker and Ji. We also provide asymptotics at infinity of all the radial and time derivates of the kernel. Along the way, we provide sharp bounds for all the derivatives of the Riemannian distance and obtain analogous bounds for those of the heat kernel of the distinguished Laplacian.

The Sobolev embedding constant on Lie groups

In this paper we estimate the Sobolev embedding constant on general noncompact Lie groups, for sub-Riemannian inhomogeneous Sobolev spaces endowed with a left invariant measure. The bound that we obtain, up to a constant depending only on the group and its sub-Riemannian structure, reduces to the best known bound for the classical inhomogeneous Sobolev embedding constant on $\mathbb{R}^d$. As an application, we prove local and global Moser--Trudinger inequalities.

Homogeneous algebras via heat kernel estimates

We study homogeneous Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces defined on doubling metric measure spaces in terms of a self-adjoint operator whose heat kernel satisfies Gaussian estimates together with its derivatives. When the measure space is a smooth manifold and such operator is a sum of squares of smooth vector fields, we prove that their intersection with $L^\infty$ is an algebra for pointwise multiplication. Our results apply to nilpotent Lie groups and Grushin settings.

Schrödinger operators on Lie groups with purely discrete spectrum

On a Lie group $G$, we investigate the discreteness of the spectrum of Schrödinger operators of the form $\mathcal{L} +V$, where $\mathcal{L}$ is a subelliptic sub-Laplacian on $G$ and the potential $V$ is a locally integrable function which is bounded from below. We prove general necessary and sufficient conditions for arbitrary potentials, and we obtain explicit characterizations when $V$ is a polynomial on $G$ or belongs to a local Muckenhoupt class. We finally discuss how to transfer our results to weighted sub-Laplacians on $G$.

Local and nonlocal Poincaré inequalities on Lie groups

We prove a local $L^p$-Poincaré inequality, $1\leq p < \infty$, on noncompact Lie groups endowed with a sub-Riemannian structure. We show that the constant involved grows at most exponentially with respect to the radius of the ball, and that if the group is nondoubling, then its growth is indeed, in general, exponential. We also prove a nonlocal $L^2$-Poincaré inequality with respect to suitable finite measures on the group.

On the Riesz Transforms for the inverse Gauss measure

Let $γ_{-1}$ be the absolutely continuous measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$ whose density is the reciprocal of a Gaussian function. Let further $\mathscr{A}$ be the natural self-adjoint Laplacian on $L^2(γ_{-1})$. In this paper, we prove that the Riesz transforms associated with $\mathscr{A}$ of order one or two are of weak type $(1,1)$, but that those of higher order are not.

Estimates for matrix coefficients of representations

Estimates for matrix coefficients of unitary representations of semisimple Lie groups have been studied for a long time, starting with the seminal work by Bargmann, by Ehrenpreis and Mautner, and by Kunze and Stein. Two types of estimates have been established: on the one hand, $L^p$ estimates, which are a dual formulation of the Kunze--Stein phenomenon, and which hold for all matrix coefficients, and on the other pointwise estimates related to asymptotic expansions at infinity, which are more precise but only hold for a restricted class of matrix coefficients. In this paper we prove a new type of estimate for the irreducibile unitary representations of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and for the so-called metaplectic representation, which we believe has the best features of, and implies, both forms of estimate described above. As an application outside representation theory, we prove a new $L^2$ estimate of dispersive type for the free Schrödinger equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Potential spaces on Lie groups

In this paper we discuss function spaces on a general noncompact Lie group, namely the scales of Triebel--Lizorkin and Besov spaces, defined in terms of a sub-Laplacian with drift. The sub-Laplacian is written as negative the sum of squares of a collection of left-invariant vector fields satisfying Hörmander's condition. These spaces were recently introduced by the authors. In this paper we prove a norm characterization in terms of finite differences, the density of test functions, and related isomorphism properties.

Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces on Lie groups

In this paper we develop a theory of Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces on general noncompact Lie groups endowed with a sub-Riemannian structure. Such spaces are defined by means of hypoelliptic sub-Laplacians with drift, and endowed with a measure whose density with respect to a right Haar measure is a continuous positive character of the group. We prove several equivalent characterizations of their norms, we establish comparison results also involving Sobolev spaces of recent introduction, and investigate their complex interpolation and algebra properties.

Maximal Hypoellipticity for Left-Invariant Differential Operators on Lie Groups

Given a differential operator defined in terms of left-invariant vector fields on a Lie group, we prove that the local condition defining maximal hypoellipticity is equivalent to a global estimate if the operator is left invariant. As a consequence, we characterize the domain of the closure in $L^p$ of certain maximal hypoelliptic differential operators on test functions on Lie groups.

Sobolev spaces on Lie groups: embedding theorems and algebra properties

Let $G$ be a noncompact connected Lie group, denote with $ρ$ a right Haar measure and choose a family of linearly independent left-invariant vector fields $\mathbf{X}$ on $G$ satisfying Hörmander's condition. Let $χ$ be a positive character of $G$ and consider the measure $μ_χ$ whose density with respect to $ρ$ is $χ$. In this paper, we introduce Sobolev spaces $L^p_α(μ_χ)$ adapted to $\mathbf{X}$ and $μ_χ$ ($1<p<\infty$, $α\geq 0$) and study embedding theorems and algebra properties of these spaces. As an application, we prove local well-posedness and regularity results of solutions of some nonlinear heat and Schrödinger equations on the group.

Endpoint results for Fourier integral operators on noncompact symmetric spaces

Let X be a noncompact symmetric space of rank one and let h^1(X) be a local atomic Hardy space. We prove the boundedness from h^1(X) to L^1(X) and on h^1(X) of some classes of Fourier integral operators related to the wave equation associated with the Laplacian on X and we estimate the growth of their norms depending on time.

Singular integrals and Hardy type spaces for the inverse Gauss measure

Let $γ_{-1}$ be the absolutely continuous measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$ whose density is the reciprocal of a Gaussian and consider the natural weighted Laplacian $\mathcal{A}$ on $L^2(γ_{-1})$. In this paper, we prove boundedness and unboundedness results for the purely imaginary powers and the first order Riesz transforms associated with the translated operators $\mathcal{A}+λI$, $λ\geq0$, from certain new Hardy-type spaces adapted to $γ_{-1}$ to $L^1(γ_{-1})$. We also investigate the weak type $(1,1)$ of these operators.
