Continuous-time quantum walk-based ans\"atze on neutral atom hardware

Continuous-time quantum walks offer provable speedups for certain computational problems, yet translating these advantages to near-term hardware remains challenging. We realize variational ans\"atze based on continuous-time quantum walks on an analog neutral-atom processor. For unentangled targets, we derive closed-form expressions for near-optimal control parameters that transfer directly to hardware with minimal calibration. On QuEra's Aquila processor we observe the super-quadratic convergence characteristic of efficient quantum walk algorithms, visible at low circuit depth, with theory predicting stronger speedups as hardware improves. For entangled targets, specifically symmetric superpositions in the Rydberg-blockaded subspace, we introduce an optimization protocol exploiting spectral properties of the walk dynamics. The required evolution time scales inversely with the spectral gap, offering an advantage over adiabatic protocols, whose evolution time scales as the inverse square of the spectral gap. We verify this scaling behavior on Aquila and confirm that the prepared states are coherent superpositions via quench dynamics. Our results establish a practical pathway from abstract quantum walk algorithms to analog quantum processors, demonstrating that the dynamics underlying their potential for super-quadratic quantum speedup are accessible on current devices.

Domain Aligned CLIP for Few-shot Classification

Large vision-language representation learning models like CLIP have demonstrated impressive performance for zero-shot transfer to downstream tasks while largely benefiting from inter-modal (image-text) alignment via contrastive objectives. This downstream performance can further be enhanced by full-scale fine-tuning which is often compute intensive, requires large labelled data, and can reduce out-of-distribution (OOD) robustness. Furthermore, sole reliance on inter-modal alignment might overlook the rich information embedded within each individual modality. In this work, we introduce a sample-efficient domain adaptation strategy for CLIP, termed Domain Aligned CLIP (DAC), which improves both intra-modal (image-image) and inter-modal alignment on target distributions without fine-tuning the main model. For intra-modal alignment, we introduce a lightweight adapter that is specifically trained with an intra-modal contrastive objective. To improve inter-modal alignment, we introduce a simple framework to modulate the precomputed class text embeddings. The proposed few-shot fine-tuning framework is computationally efficient, robust to distribution shifts, and does not alter CLIP's parameters. We study the effectiveness of DAC by benchmarking on 11 widely used image classification tasks with consistent improvements in 16-shot classification upon strong baselines by about 2.3% and demonstrate competitive performance on 4 OOD robustness benchmarks.

Ground state and excitation properties of soft-core bosons

We study the physics of soft-core bosons at zero temperature in two dimensions for a class of potentials that could be realised in experiments with Rydberg dressed Bose-Einstein condensates. We analyze the ground state properties of the system in detail and provide a complete description of the excitation spectra in both superfluid, supersolid and crystalline phase for a wide range of interaction strengths and densities. In addition we describe a method to extract the transverse gapless excitation modes in the phases with broken translational symmetry within the framework of path integral Monte Carlo methods.

Rydberg-dressing of atoms in optical lattices

We study atoms in optical lattices whose electronic ground state is off-resonantly coupled to a highly excited state with strong binary interactions. We present a time-dependent treatment of the resulting quantum dynamics, which -- contrary to recent predictions [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 213005 (2013)] -- proves that the strong repulsion between the weakly admixed Rydberg states does not lead to atomic trap-loss. This finding provides an important basis for creating and manipulating coherent long-range interactions in optical lattice experiments.

Tunneling of polarized fermions in 3D double wells

We study the tunneling of a spin polarized Fermi gas in a three-dimensional double well potential, focusing on the time dynamics starting from an initial state in which there is an imbalance in the number of particles in the two wells. Although fermions in different doublets of the double well tunnel with different frequencies, we point out that (incoherent) oscillations of a large number of particles can arise, as a consequence of the presence of transverse degrees of freedom. Estimates of the doublet structure and of the occupation of transverse eigenstates for a realistic experimental setup are provided.

Elementary excitations of ultracold soft-core bosons across the superfluid-supersolid phase transition

We investigate the zero-temperature excitation spectrum of two-dimensional soft-core bosons for a wide range parameters and across the phase transition from a superfluid to a supersolid state. Based on mean field calculations and recent Quantum Monte Carlo results, we demonstrate the applicability of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, even at high interaction strengths where the system forms an insulating cluster crystal. Interestingly, our study reveals that the maximum energy of the longitudinal phonon band in the supersolid phase connects to the maxon energy of the superfluid at the phase transition.

Modulational instabilities in lattices with power-law hoppings and interactions

We study the occurrence of modulational instabilities in lattices with non-local, power-law hoppings and interactions. Choosing as a case study the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we consider one-dimensional chains with power-law decaying interactions (with exponent α) and hoppings (with exponent β): An extensive energy is obtained for α, β>1. We show that the effect of power-law interactions is that of shifting the onset of the modulational instabilities region for α>1. At a critical value of the interaction strength, the modulational stable region shrinks to zero. Similar results are found for effectively short-range nonlocal hoppings (β> 2): At variance, for longer-ranged hoppings (1 < β< 2) there is no longer any modulational stability. The hopping instability arises for q = 0 perturbations, thus the system is most sensitive to the perturbations of the order of the system's size. We also discuss the stability regions in the presence of the interplay between competing interactions - (e.g., attractive local and repulsive nonlocal interactions). We find that noncompeting nonlocal interactions give rise to a modulational instability emerging for a perturbing wave vector q = πwhile competing nonlocal interactions may induce a modulational instability for a perturbing wave vector 0 < q < π. Since for α> 1 and β> 2 the effects are similar to the effect produced on the stability phase diagram by finite range interactions and/or hoppings, we conclude that the modulational instability is "genuinely" long-ranged for 1 < β< 2 nonlocal hoppings.

Dipole Oscillations in Fermionic Mixtures

We study dipole oscillations in a general fermionic mixture: starting from the Boltzmann equation, we classify the different solutions in the parameter space through the number of real eigenvalues of the small oscillations matrix. We discuss how this number can be computed using the Sturm algorithm and its relation with the properties of the Laplace transform of the experimental quantities. After considering two components in harmonic potentials having different trapping frequencies, we study dipole oscillations in three-component mixtures. Explicit computations are done for realistic experimental setups using the classical Boltzmann equation without intra-species interactions. A brief discussion of the application of this classification to general collective oscillations is also presented.
