Mott glass in site-diluted S=1 antiferromagnets with single-ion anisotropy

The interplay between site dilution and quantum fluctuations in S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the square lattice is investigated using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Quantum fluctuations are tuned by a single-ion anisotropy D. In the clean limit, a sufficiently large D>D_c = 5.65(2) J forces each spin into its m_S=0 state, and thus destabilizes antiferromagnetic order. In the presence of site dilution, quantum fluctuations are found to destroy Néel order before the percolation threshold of the lattice is reached, if D exceeds a critical value D^* = 2.3(2) J. This mechanism opens up an extended quantum-disordered Mott glass phase on the percolated lattice, characterized by a gapless spectrum and vanishing uniform susceptibility.

Field-induced quantum disordered phases in S=1/2 weakly-coupled dimer systems with site dilution

In the present paper we discuss the rich phase diagram of S=1/2 weakly coupled dimer systems with site dilution as a function of an applied uniform magnetic field. Performing quantum Monte Carlo simulations on a site-diluted bilayer system, we find a sequence of three distinct quantum-disordered phases induced by the field. Such phases divide a doping-induced order-by-disorder phase at low fields from a field-induced ordered phase at intermediate fields. The three quantum disordered phases are: a gapless disordered-free-moment phase, a gapped plateau phase, and two gapless Bose-glass phases. Each of the quantum-disordered phases have distinct experimental signatures that make them observable through magnetometry and neutron scattering measurements. In particular the Bose-glass phase is characterized by an unconventional magnetization curve whose field-dependence is exponential. Making use of a local-gap model, we directly relate this behavior to the statistics of rare events in the system.

Scaling Behavior of Entanglement in Two- and Three-Dimensional Free Fermions

Exactly solving a spinless fermionic system in two and three dimensions, we investigate the scaling behavior of the block entropy in critical and non-critical phases. The scaling of the block entropy crucially depends on the nature of the excitation spectrum of the system and on the topology of the Fermi surface. Noticeably, in the critical phases the scaling violates the area law and acquires a logarithmic correction \emph{only} when a well defined Fermi surface exists in the system. When the area law is violated, we accurately verify a conjecture for the prefactor of the logarithmic correction, proposed by D. Gioev and I. Klich [quant-ph/0504151].

Quantum disorder and Griffiths singularities in bond-diluted two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We investigate quantum phase transitions in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on square lattices with inhomogeneous bond dilution. It is shown that quantum fluctuations can be continuously tuned by inhomogeneous bond dilution, eventually leading to the destruction of long-range magnetic order on the percolating cluster. Two multicritical points are identified at which the magnetic transition separates from the percolation transition, introducing a novel quantum phase transition. Beyond these multicritical points a quantum-disordered phase appears, characterized by an infinite percolating cluster with short ranged antiferromagnetic order. In this phase, the low-temperature uniform susceptibility diverges algebraically with non-universal exponents. This is a signature that the novel quantum-disordered phase is a quantum Griffiths phase, as also directly confirmed by the statistical distribution of local gaps. This study thus presents evidence of a genuine quantum Griffiths phenomenon in a two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

Reading entanglement in terms of spin configurations in quantum magnets

We consider a quantum many-body system made of $N$ interacting $S{=}1/2$ spins on a lattice, and develop a formalism which allows to extract, out of conventional magnetic observables, the quantum probabilities for any selected spin pair to be in maximally entangled or factorized two-spin states. This result is used in order to capture the meaning of entanglement properties in terms of magnetic behavior. In particular, we consider the concurrence between two spins and show how its expression extracts information on the presence of bipartite entanglement out of the probability distributions relative to specific sets of two-spin quantum states. We apply the above findings to the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model in a uniform magnetic field, both on a chain and on a two-leg ladder. Using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain the above probability distributions and the associated entanglement, discussing their evolution under application of the field.

Quantum localization in bilayer Heisenberg antiferromagnets with site dilution

The field-induced antiferromagnetic ordering in systems of weakly coupled S=1/2 dimers at zero temperature can be described as a Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet quasiparticles (singlet quasiholes) in the ground state. For the case of a Heisenberg bilayer, it is here shown how the above picture is altered in the presence of site dilution of the magnetic lattice. Geometric randomness leads to quantum localization of the quasiparticles/quasiholes and to an extended Bose-glass phase in a realistic disordered model. This localization phenomenon drives the system towards a quantum-disordered phase well before the classical geometric percolation threshold is reached.

Quantum percolation in two-dimensional antiferromagnets

The interplay of geometric randomness and strong quantum fluctuations is an exciting topic in quantum many-body physics, leading to the emergence of novel quantum phases in strongly correlated electron systems. Recent investigations have focused on the case of homogeneous site and bond dilution in the quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice, reporting a classical geometric percolation transition between magnetic order and disorder. In this study we show how inhomogeneous bond dilution leads to percolative quantum phase transitions, which we have studied extensively by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Quantum percolation introduces a new class of two-dimensional spin liquids, characterized by an infinite percolating network with vanishing antiferromagnetic order parameter.

Quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets: a survey of the activity in Firenze

Over the years the research group in Firenze has produced a number of theoretical results concerning the statistical mechanics of quantum antiferromagnetic models, which range from the theory of two-magnon Raman scattering to the characterization of the phase transitions in quantum low-dimensional antiferromagnetic models. Our research activity was steadily aimed to the understanding of experimental observations.

Entanglement and factorized ground states in two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets

Making use of exact results and quantum Monte Carlo data for the entanglement of formation, we show that the ground state of anisotropic two-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnets in a uniform field takes the classical-like form of a product state for a particular value and orientation of the field, at which the purely quantum correlations due to entanglement disappear. Analytical expressions for the energy and the form of such states are given, and a novel type of exactly solvable two-dimensional quantum models is therefore singled out. Moreover, we show that the field-induced quantum phase transition present in the models is unambiguously characterized by a cusp minimum in the pairwise-to-global entanglement ratio R, marking the quantum-critical enhancement of \emph{multipartite} entanglement. A detailed discussion is provided on the universality of the cusp in R as a signature of quantum critical behavior entirely based on entanglement.

Entanglement in quantum critical spin systems

We study the field dependence of the entanglement of formation in anisotropic S=1/2 antiferromagnetic chains and two-leg ladders displaying a T=0 field-driven quantum phase transition. The analysis is carried out via Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. At zero temperature the entanglement estimators show abrupt changes at and around criticality, vanishing below the critical field, in correspondence with an exactly factorized state, and then immediately recovering a finite value upon passing through the quantum phase transition. At the quantum critical point, a deep minimum in the pairwise-to-global entanglement ratio shows that multi-spin entanglement is strongly enhanced; moreover this signature represents a novel way of detecting the quantum phase transition of the system, relying entirely on entanglement estimators.

Anisotropy-induced ordering in the quantum J1-J2 antiferromagnet

We study the effect of spin anisotropies on a frustrated quantum antiferromagnet using the J_1-J_2^{XXZ} model on the square lattice. The T=0 and finite-T phase diagrams of this model are obtained utilizing spin-wave theory, exact diagonalization, and quantum Monte Carlo. We find that anisotropic frustration tends to stabilize XY- and Ising-like ordered phases, while the disordered spin-liquid phase is restricted to a small region of the phase diagram. The ordered phases are separated by first-order transitions and exhibit a non-trivial reentrance phenomenon.

Ising transition in the two-dimensional quantum $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model

We study the thermodynamics of the spin-$S$ two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice with nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) neighbor couplings in its collinear phase ($J_2/J_1>0.5$), using the pure-quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation. Our results show the persistence of a finite-temperature Ising phase transition for every value of the spin, provided that the ratio $J_2/J_1$ is greater than a critical value corresponding to the onset of collinear long-range order at zero temperature. We also calculate the spin- and temperature-dependence of the collinear susceptibility and correlation length, and we discuss our results in light of the experiments on Li$_2$VOSiO$_4$ and related compounds.

Detection of XY behaviour in weakly anisotropic quantum antiferromagnets on the square lattice

We consider the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice with S=1/2 and very weak easy-plane exchange anisotropy; by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method, based on the continuous-time loop algorithm, we find that the thermodynamics of the model is highly sensitive to the presence of tiny anisotropies and is characterized by a crossover between isotropic and planar behaviour. We discuss the mechanism underlying the crossover phenomenon and show that it occurs at a temperature which is characteristic of the model. The expected Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is observed below the crossover: a finite range of temperatures consequently opens for experimental detection of non-critical 2D XY behaviour. Direct comparison is made with uniform susceptibility data relative to the S=1/2 layered antiferromagnet Sr2CuO2Cl2.

Anisotropy and Ising-like transition of the S=5/2 two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet Mn-formate di-Urea

Recently reported measurements of specific heat on the compound Mn-formate di-Urea (Mn-f-2U) by Takeda et al. [Phys. Rev. B 63, 024425 (2001)] are considered. As a model to describe the overall thermodynamic behavior of such compound, the easy-axis two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet is proposed and studied by means of the 'pure quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation' (PQSCHA). In particular it is shown that, when the temperature decreases, the compound exhibits a crossover from 2D-Heisenberg to 2D-Ising behavior, followed by a 2D-Ising-like phase transition, whose location allows to get a reliable estimate of the easy-axis anisotropy driving the transition itself. Below the critical temperature T_N=3.77 K, the specific heat is well described by the two-dimensional easy-axis model down to a temperature T*=1.47 K where a T^3-law sets in, possibly marking a low-temperature crossover of magnetic fluctuations from two to three dimensions.

Field-induced XY behavior in the S=1/2 antiferromagnet on the square lattice

Making use of the quantum Monte Carlo method based on the worm algorithm, we study the thermodynamic behavior of the S=1/2 isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice in a uniform magnetic field varying from very small values up to the saturation value. The field is found to induce a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at a finite temperature, above which a genuine XY behavior in an extended temperature range is observed. The phase diagram of the system is drawn, and the thermodynamic behavior of the specific heat and of the uniform and staggered magnetization is discussed in sight of an experimental investigation of the field-induced XY behavior.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of S=1/2 weakly-anisotropic antiferromagnets on the square lattice

We study the finite-temperature behaviour of two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets with very weak easy-axis and easy-plane exchange anisotropies. By means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, based on the continuous-time loop and worm algorithm, we obtain a rich set of data that allows us to draw conclusions about both the existence and the type of finite-temperature transition expected in the considered models. We observe that the essential features of the Ising universality class, as well as those of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) one, are preserved even for anisotropies as small as 10^{-3} times the exchange integral; such outcome, being referred to the most quantum case S=1/2, rules out the possibility for quantum fluctuations to destroy the long or quasi-long range order, whose onset is responsible for the Ising or BKT transition, no matter how small the anisotropy. Besides this general issue, we use our results to extract, out of the isotropic component, the features which are peculiar to weakly anisotropic models, with particular attention for the temperature region immediately above the transition. By this analysis we aim to give a handy tool for understanding the experimental data relative to those real compounds whose anisotropies are too weak for a qualitative description to accomplish the goal of singling out the genuinely two-dimensional critical behaviour.
