The Ascending Chain Condition for log canonical thresholds on l.c.i. varieties

Shokurov's ACC Conjecture says that the set of all log canonical thresholds on varieties of bounded dimension satisfies the Ascending Chain Condition. This conjecture was proved for log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties in [EM1]. Here we use this result and inversion of adjunction to establish the conjecture for locally complete intersection varieties.

Singularities on normal varieties

In this paper we generalize the definitions of singularities of pairs and multiplier ideal sheaves to pairs on arbitrary normal varieties, without any assumption on the variety being Q-Gorenstein or the pair being log Q-Gorenstein. The main features of the theory extend to this setting in a natural way.

Ample subvarieties and rationally connected fibrations

Under some positivity assumptions, extension properties of rationally connected fibrations from a submanifold to its ambient variety are studied. Given a family of rational curves on a complex projective manifold X inducing a covering family on a submanifold Y with ample normal bundle in X, the main results relate, under suitable conditions, the associated rational connected fiber structures on X and on Y. Applications of these results include an extension theorem for Mori contractions of fiber type and a classification theorem in the case Y has a structure of projective bundle or quadric fibration.

Stringy Chern classes of singular varieties

Motivic integration and MacPherson's transformation are combined in this paper to construct a theory of "stringy" Chern classes for singular varieties. These classes enjoy strong birational invariance properties, and their definition encodes data coming from resolution of singularities. The singularities allowed in the theory are those typical of the minimal model program; examples are given by quotients of manifolds by finite groups. For the latter an explicit formula is proven, assuming that the canonical line bundle of the manifold descends to the quotient. This gives an expression of the stringy Chern class of the quotient in terms of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of the fixed-point set data.

Higher cohomology of divisors on a projective variety

We consider a Cartier divisor L on a d-dimensional complex projective variety X. It is well-known that the dimensions of the cohomomology groups H^i(X,O_X(mL)) grow at most like m^d, and it is natural to ask when one of these actually has maximal growth. For i = 0, this happens by definition exactly when L is big. Here we focus on the question of when one or more of the higher cohomology groups grows maximally. Our main result is that if one considers also small perturbations of the divisor in question, then the maximal growth of higher cohomology characterizes non-ample divisors. This criterion can also be phrased in terms of the vanishing of continuous functions on the Neron-Severi space of X that measure the growth of higher cohomology groups.

Negative curves on very general blow-ups of P^2

A conjecture, related to the Nagata conjecture and the Segre-Harbourne-Gimigliano-Hirschowitz conjecture, states that every integral curve with negative self-intersection on the blow-up of $¶^2$ at a set of points in very general position is a (-1)-curve. In this paper we verify this conjecture for all curves whose image on $¶^2$ is a curve with a singularity of multiplicity two at one of the centers of the blow-up.

A Localization Principle for Orbifold Theories

In this article, written primarily for physicists and geometers, we survey several manifestations of a general localization principle for orbifold theories such as $K$-theory, index theory, motivic integration and elliptic genera.

Bad loci of free linear systems

The bad locus of a base-point free linear system L on a normal complex projective variety X is defined as the subset B(L) of X of points that are not contained in any irreducible and reduced member of L. In this paper we provide a geometric description of such locus in terms of the morphism defined by L. In particular, assume that the dimension of X is at least 2, and that L is the complete linear system associated to an ample and spanned line bundle. It is known that in this case B(L) is empty unless X is a surface. Then we prove that, when the latter occurs, B(L) is not empty if and only if L defines a morphism onto a two dimensional cone, in which case B(L) is the inverse image of the vertex of the cone.

Length, multiplicity, and multiplier ideals

Let (R,m) be an n-dimensional regular local ring, essentially of finite type over a field of characteristic zero. In this paper we study the relationship between the singularities of the scheme defined by an m-primary ideal I of R and the multiplier ideals J(I^c), with c varying among the positive rational numbers. In particular, we prove that, for every nonnegative integer k, the Samuel multiplicity of I is greater or equal to (n+k)^n/c^n whenever J(I^c) is contained in the (k+1)-th power of the maximal ideal m. This formula generalizes an inequality on log canonical thresholds previously obtained by Ein, Mustaţǎ and the author of this paper (arXiv:math.AG/0205171). A refined inequality is also shown to hold for small dimensions, and similar results valid for a generalization of test ideals in positive characteristics are presented.

On planar Cremona maps of prime order

This paper contains a new proof of the classification of elements of prime order in the Cremona group Bir(P^2), up to conjugation. In addition, we give explicit geometric constructions of these Cremona transformations, and provide a parameterization of their conjugacy classes. Analogous constructions in higher dimensions are also discussed.

Bounds for log canonical thresholds with applications to birational rigidity

We use intersection theory, degeneration techniques and jet schemes to study log canonical thresholds. Our first result gives a lower bound for the log canonical threshold of a pair in terms of the log canonical threshold of the image by a suitable smooth morphism. This in turn is based on an inequality relating the log canonical threshold and the Samuel multiplicity, generalizing our previous result from math.AG/0205171. We then give a lower bound for the log canonical threshold of an affine scheme defined by homogeneous equations of the same degree in terms of the dimension of the non log terminal locus (this part supersedes math.AG/0105113). As an application of our results, we prove the birational superrigidity of every smooth hypersurface of degree N in P^N, if 4\leq N\leq 12.

Multiplicities and log canonical threshold

If R is a local ring of dimension n, of a smooth complex variety, and if I is a zero dimensional ideal in R, then we prove that e(I)\geq n^n/lc(I)^n. Here e(I) is the Samuel multiplicity along I, and lc(I) is the log canonical threshold of (R,I). We show that equality is achieved if and only if the integral closure of I is a power of the maximal ideal. When I is an arbitrary ideal, but n=2, we give a similar bound involving the Segre numbers of I.
