EXAGREE: Mitigating Explanation Disagreement with Stakeholder-Aligned Models

Conflicting explanations, arising from different attribution methods or model internals, limit the adoption of machine learning models in safety-critical domains. We turn this disagreement into an advantage and introduce EXplanation AGREEment (EXAGREE), a two-stage framework that selects a Stakeholder-Aligned Explanation Model (SAEM) from a set of similar-performing models. The selection maximizes Stakeholder-Machine Agreement (SMA), a single metric that unifies faithfulness and plausibility. EXAGREE couples a differentiable mask-based attribution network (DMAN) with monotone differentiable sorting, enabling gradient-based search inside the constrained model space. Experiments on six real-world datasets demonstrate simultaneous gains of faithfulness, plausibility, and fairness over baselines, while preserving task accuracy. Extensive ablation studies, significance tests, and case studies confirm the robustness and feasibility of the method in practice.

Shapley Based Residual Decomposition for Instance Analysis

In this paper, we introduce the idea of decomposing the residuals of regression with respect to the data instances instead of features. This allows us to determine the effects of each individual instance on the model and each other, and in doing so makes for a model-agnostic method of identifying instances of interest. In doing so, we can also determine the appropriateness of the model and data in the wider context of a given study. The paper focuses on the possible applications that such a framework brings to the relatively unexplored field of instance analysis in the context of Explainable AI tasks.

Using Restart Heuristics to Improve Agent Performance in Angry Birds

Over the past few years the Angry Birds AI competition has been held in an attempt to develop intelligent agents that can successfully and efficiently solve levels for the video game Angry Birds. Many different agents and strategies have been developed to solve the complex and challenging physical reasoning problems associated with such a game. However none of these agents attempt one of the key strategies which humans employ to solve Angry Birds levels, which is restarting levels. Restarting is important in Angry Birds because sometimes the level is no longer solvable or some given shot made has little to no benefit towards the ultimate goal of the game. This paper proposes a framework and experimental evaluation for when to restart levels in Angry Birds. We demonstrate that restarting is a viable strategy to improve agent performance in many cases.

Stochastic Resonance for a Model with Two Pathways

In this thesis we consider stochastic resonance for a diffusion with drift given by a potential, which has two metastable states and two pathways between them. Depending on the direction of the forcing the height of the two barriers, one for each path, will either oscillate alternating or in synchronisation. We consider a simplified model given by discrete and continuous time Markov Chains with two states. This was done for alternating and synchronised wells. The invariant measures are derived for both cases and shown to be constant for the synchronised case. A PDF for the escape time from an oscillatory potential is reviewed. Methods of detecting stochastic resonance are presented, which are linear response, signal-to-noise ratio, energy, out-of-phase measures, relative entropy and entropy. A new statistical test called the conditional Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is developed, which can be used to analyse stochastic resonance. An explicit two dimensional potential is introduced, the critical point structure derived and the dynamics, the invariant state and escape time studied numerically. The six measures are unable to detect the stochastic resonance in the case of synchronised saddles. The distribution of escape times however not only shows a clear sign of stochastic resonance, but changing the direction of the forcing from alternating to synchronised saddles an additional resonance at double the forcing frequency starts to appear. The conditional KS test reliably detects the stochastic resonance even for forcing quick enough and for data so sparse that the stochastic resonance is not obvious directly from the histogram of escape times.

A comparative study of stochastic resonance for a model with two pathways by escape times, linear response, invariant measures and the conditional Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test

A Kolmogorov-Smirnov type test for two inter-dependent random variables

Consider $n$ iid random variables, where $ξ_1, \ldots, ξ_n$ are $n$ realisations of a random variable $ξ$ and $ζ_1, \ldots, ζ_n$ are $n$ realisations of a random variable $ζ$. The distribution of each realisation of $ξ$, that is the distribution of \emph{one} $ξ_i$, depends on the value of the corresponding $ζ_i$, that is the probability $P\left(ξ_i\leq x\right)=F(x,ζ_i)$. We develop a statistical test to see if the $ξ_1, \ldots, ξ_n$ are distributed according to the distribution function $F(x,ζ_i)$. We call this new statistical test the condition Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.
