Signatures of Non-Gaussianity in the Curvaton Model

We discuss the signatures of non-Gaussianity in the curvaton model where the potential includes also a non-quadratic term. In such a case the non-linearity parameter f_NL can become very small, and we show that non-Gaussianity is then encoded in the non-reducible non-linearity parameter g_NL of the trispectrum, which can be very large. Thus the place to look for the non-Gaussianity in the curvaton model may be the trispectrum rather than the bispectrum. We also show that g_NL measures directly the deviation of the curvaton potential from the purely quadratic form. While g_NL depends on the strength of the non-quadratic terms relative to the quadratic one, we find that for reasonable cases roughly g_NL\sim O(-10^4)-O(-10^5), which are values that may well be accessible by future observations.

The Hubble constant and dark energy from cosmological distance measures

We study how the determination of the Hubble constant from cosmological distance measures is affected by models of dark energy and vice versa. For this purpose, constraints on the Hubble constant and dark energy are investigated using the cosmological observations of cosmic microwave background, baryon acoustic oscillations and type Ia suprenovae. When one investigates dark energy, the Hubble constant is often a nuisance parameter, thus it is usually marginalized over. On the other hand, when one focuses on the Hubble constant, simple dark energy models such as a cosmological constant and a constant equation of state are usually assumed. Since we do not know the nature of dark energy yet, it is interesting to investigate the Hubble constant assuming some types of dark energy and see to what extent the constraint on the Hubble constant is affected by the assumption concerning dark energy. We show that the constraint on the Hubble constant is not affected much by the assumption for dark energy. We furthermore show that this holds true even if we remove the assumption that the universe is flat. We also discuss how the prior on the Hubble constant affects the constraints on dark energy and/or the curvature of the universe.

On the Determination of Neutrino Masses and Dark Energy Evolution from the Cross Correlation of CMB and LSS

We discuss the possibilities of the simultaneous determination of the neutrino masses and the evolution of dark energy from future cosmological observations such as cosmic microwave background (CMB), large scale structure (LSS) and the cross correlation between them. Recently it has been discussed that there is a degeneracy between the neutrino masses and the equation of state for dark energy. It is also known that there are some degeneracies among the parameters describing the dark energy evolutions. We discuss the implications of these on the cross correlation of CMB with LSS in some details. Then we consider to what extent we can determine the neutrino masses and the dark energy evolution using the expected data from CMB, LSS and their cross correlation.

Constraints on Generalized Dark Energy from Recent Observations

Effects of a generalized dark energy fluid is investigated on cosmic density fluctuations such as cosmic microwave background. As a general dark energy fluid, we take into consideration the possibility of the anisotropic stress for dark energy, which has not been discussed much in the literature. We comprehensively study its effects on the evolution of density fluctuations along with that of non-adiabatic pressure fluctuation of dark energy, then give constraints on such a generalized dark energy from current observations. We show that, though we cannot find any stringent limits on the anisotropic stress or the non-adiabatic pressure fluctuation themselves, the constrains on the equation of state of dark energy can be affected in some cases by the nature of dark energy fluctuation characterized by these properties. This may have important implications to the strategy to study the nature of dark energy.

Dark Energy Parametrizations and the Curvature of the Universe

We investigate observational constraints on the curvature of the universe not restricting ourselves to a cosmological constant as dark energy, in particular allowing a dark energy equation of state to evolve with time in several ways. We use type Ia supernovae (SNeIa) data from the latest gold data set which includes 182 SNeIa, along with the CMB shift parameter and the baryon acoustic oscillation peak. We show quantitatively that the constraint on the curvature of the universe depends on dark energy model: some popular parametrizations give constraints closely around the flat universe at 5% level (2 sigma C.L.) whereas some parametrizations allow the universe to be as open as Omega_k ~ 0.2.

Cosmological Avatars of the Landscape II: CMB and LSS Signatures

This is the second paper in the series that confronts predictions of a model of the landscape with cosmological observations. We show here how the modifications of the Friedmann equation due to the decohering effects of long wavelength modes on the wavefunction of the Universe defined on the landscape leave unique signatures on the CMB spectra and large scale structure (LSS). We show that the effect of the string corrections is to suppress $σ_8$ and the CMB $TT$ spectrum at large angles, thereby bringing WMAP and SDSS data for $σ_8$ into agreement. We find interesting features imprinted on the matter power spectrum $P(k)$: power is suppressed at large scales indicating the possibility of primordial voids competing with the ISW effect. Furthermore, power is enhanced at structure and substructure scales, $k\simeq 10^{-2-0} h~{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. Our smoking gun for discriminating this proposal from others with similar CMB and LSS predictions come from correlations between cosmic shear and temperature anisotropies, which here indicate a noninflationary channel of contribution to LSS, with unique ringing features of nonlocal entanglement displayed at structure and substructure scales.

Cosmological Avatars of the Landscape I: Bracketing the SUSY Breaking Scale

We investigate the effects of quantum entanglement between our horizon patch and others due to the tracing out of long wavelength modes in the wavefunction of the Universe as defined on a particular model of the landscape. In this, the first of two papers devoted to this topic, we find that the SUSY breaking scale is bounded both above {\em and} below: $10^{-10} M_{\rm P}\leq M_{\rm SUSY}\leq 10^{-8} M_{\rm P}$ for $GUT$ scale inflation. The lower bound is at least five orders of magnitude larger than the expected value of this parameter and can be tested by LHC physics.

Constraining SuperWIMPy and Warm Subhalos with Future Submillilensing

We propose to observe QSO-galaxy strong lens systems to give a new constraint on the damping scale of the initial fluctuations. We find that the future observation of submilliarc scale astrometric shifts of the multiple lensed images of QSOs would find \sim 10^{(3-9)} M_{\odot} subhalos inside the macrolens halo. The superweakly interacting massive particles (superWIMPs) produced from a WIMP decay and the warm dark matter (WDM) particles that predict a comoving damping scale larger than \sim 2 kpc can be constrained if \sim 10^3 M_{\odot} subhalos are detected.

Effects of Cosmic Strings on Free Streaming

We study the effect of free streaming in a universe with cosmic strings with time-varying tension as well as with constant tension. Although current cosmological observations suggest that fluctuation seeded by cosmic strings cannot be the primary source of cosmic density fluctuation, some contributions from them are still allowed. Since cosmic strings actively produce isocurvature fluctuation, the damping of small scale structure via free streaming by dark matter particles with large velocity dispersion at the epoch of radiation-matter equality is less efficient than that in models with conventional adiabatic fluctuation. We discuss its implications to the constraints on the properties of particles such as massive neutrinos and warm dark matter.

Implications of cosmic strings with time-varying tension on CMB and large scale structure

We investigate cosmological evolution and implications of cosmic strings with time-dependent tension. We derive basic equations of time development of the correlation length and the velocity of such strings, based on the one scale model. Then, we find that, in the case where the tension depends on some power of the cosmic time, cosmic strings with time-dependent tension goes into the scaling solution if the power is lower than a critical value. We also discuss cosmic microwave background anisotropy and matter power spectra produced by these strings. The constraints on their tensions from the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe (WMAP) three year data and Sloan digital sky survey (SDSS) data are also given.

Implication of Dark Energy Parametrizations on the Determination of the Curvature of the Universe

We investigate how the nature of dark energy affects the determination of the curvature of the universe from recent observations. For this purpose, we consider the constraints on the matter and dark energy density using observations of type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillation peak and cosmic microwave background with several types of dark energy equation of state. Although it is usually said that the combination of current observations favors a flat universe, we found that a relatively large parameter space allows the universe to be open for a particular model of dark energy. We also discuss what kind of dark energy model or prior allow a non-flat universe.

Revisiting the Constraint on the Helium Abundance from CMB

We revisit the constraint on the primordial helium mass fraction Yp from observations of cosmic microwave background (CMB) alone. By minimizing chi square of recent CMB experiments over 6 other cosmological parameters, we obtained rather weak constraints as 0.17 < Yp < 0.52 at 1 sigma C.L. for a particular data set. We also study the future constraint on cosmological parameters when we take account of the prediction of the standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) theory as a prior on the helium mass fraction where Yp can be fixed for a given energy density of baryon. We discuss the implications of the prediction of the standard BBN on the analysis of CMB.

Dark Energy Evolution and the Curvature of the Universe from Recent Observations

We discuss the constraints on the time-varying equation of state for dark energy and the curvature of the universe using observations of type Ia supernovae from Riess et al. and the most recent Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS), the baryon acoustic oscillation peak detected in the SDSS luminous red galaxy survey and cosmic microwave background. Due to the degeneracy among the parameters which describe the time dependence of the equation of state and the curvature of the universe, the constraints on them can be weakened when we try to constrain them simultaneously, in particular when we use a single observational data. However, we show that we can obtain relatively severe constraints when we use all data sets from observations above even if we consider the time-varying equation of state and do not assume a flat universe. We also found that the combined data set favors a flat universe even if we consider the time variation of dark energy equation of state.

Implications of the Curvaton on Inflationary Cosmology

We study implications of the curvaton, a late-decaying light scalar field, on inflationary cosmology, paying particular attentions to modifications of observable quantities such as the scalar spectral index of the primordial power spectrum and the tensor-to-scalar ratio. We consider this issue from a general viewpoint and discuss how the observable quantities are affected by the existence of the curvaton. It is shown that the modification owing to the curvaton depends on class of inflation models. We also study the effects of the curvaton on inflation models generated by the inflationary flow equation.

Relaxing Constraints on Inflation Models with Curvaton

We consider the effects of the curvaton, late-decaying scalar condensation, to observational constraints on inflation models. From current observations of cosmic density fluctuations, severe constraints on some class of inflation models are obtained, in particular, on the chaotic inflation with higher-power monomials, the natural inflation, and the new inflation. We study how the curvaton scenario changes (and relaxes) the constraints on these models.

Making waves on CMB power spectrum and inflaton dynamics

We discuss cosmic microwave background anisotropies in models with an unconventional primordial power spectrum. In particular, we consider an initial power spectrum with some ``spiky'' corrections. Interestingly, such a primordial power spectrum generates ``wavy'' structure in the CMB angular power spectrum.

Correlated Isocurvature Fluctuation of Quintessence and Curvaton Scenario

We consider cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy in models with quintessence taking into account of isocurvature fluctuation in the quintessence. It is shown that, if the primordial fluctuation of the quintessence has a correlation with the adiabatic density fluctuations, CMB angular power spectrum $C_l$ at low multipoles can be suppressed. Possible scenario of generating correlated mixture of the quintessence and adiabatic fluctuations is also discussed.

Bigger Rip with No Dark Energy

By studying a modified Friedmann equation which arises in an extension of general relativity which accommodates a time-dependent fundamental length $L(t)$, we consider cosmological models where the scale factor diverges with an essential singularity at a finite future time. Such models have no dark energy in the conventional sense of energy possessing a truly simple pressure-energy relationship. Data on supernovae restrict the time from the present until the Rip to be generically longer than the current age of the Universe.
