STOchastic LAttice Simulation of hybrid inflation

We investigate the spatial profile of the curvature perturbation generated in multi-waterfall hybrid inflation models, which are known to produce various topological defects. Using the lattice simulation code STOchastic LAttice Simulation, based on the stochastic formalism of inflation, we analyse six cases by varying the number of waterfall fields $n$ and the functional form of the inflaton potential (``Quadratic'' and ``Cubic'' cases). Our statistical analysis shows that the probability density functions (PDFs) and power spectra are broadly consistent with the so-called stochastic-$δN$ algorithm. The ``Cubic'' case also exhibits a characteristic upper bound in the PDF, as discovered in our previous work, that suppresses \acl{PBH} formation while potentially affecting halo formation. Furthermore, we employ the Euler characteristic as a topological diagnostic tool to identify the structures of the waterfall fields as well as the curvature perturbation. We find that the topological defects, such as domain walls ($n=1$), cosmic strings ($n=2$), and monopoles ($n=3$), are reconnected during inflation into finer structures by the stochastic noise, making their correlation lengths much smaller than the Hubble scale at the critical point of the waterfall phase transition counterintuitively. The Euler characteristic also implies global structures of the curvature perturbation for $n=1$, though we do not conclude if they are due to the domain wall, because neither the strings ($n=2$) nor monopoles ($n=3$) leave such structures. The global structures of the curvature perturbation will provide a novel probe for the physics of the early universe.

Stochastic-tail of the curvature perturbation in hybrid inflation

The exponential-tail behaviours of the probability density function (PDF) of the primordial curvature perturbation are confirmed in the mild-waterfall variants of hybrid inflation with the use of the stochastic formalism of inflation. On top of these tails, effective upper bounds on the curvature perturbation are also observed, corresponding to the exact hilltop trajectory during the waterfall phase. We find that in the model where the leading and higher-order terms in the expansion of the inflaton potential around the critical point are fine-tuned to balance, this upper bound can be significantly reduced, even smaller than the primordial black hole (PBH) threshold, as a novel perturbation-reduction mechanism than the one proposed by Tada and Yamada. It makes PBH formation much difficult compared to the Gaussian or exponential-tail approximation. We also introduce Johnson's $S_U$-distribution as a useful fitting function for the PDF, which reveals a nonlinear mapping between the Gaussian field and the curvature perturbation.

Ghost-free 2-form fields in cosmology: implications for gravitational parity violation

We explore the possibility of parity-violating, nonminimally coupled 2-form field theories that retain the same dynamical degrees of freedom as a massive 2-form and thus are ghost-free. Starting from the most general kinetic terms and dimension four couplings between the 2-form field and the curvature tensors, we find a two-parameter family of such theories. However, we also find that parity-violating terms involving the dual 2-form field can be absorbed into a field redefinition, leaving a theory with essentially the same structure as that obtained by Heisenberg and Trenkler (i.e., the parity-preserving coupling to the double dual Riemann tensor). After the field redefinition, the only place where parity-violating terms can appear is in the potential. We then consider a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model with an isotropic configuration of a triplet of 2-form fields, and study tensor perturbations in this setup. There are three types of tensor perturbations, two of which are dynamical. We show that chiral gravitational waves can be generated in the presence of parity-violating terms in the potential.

STOLAS: STOchastic LAttice Simulation of cosmic inflation

We develop a C++ package of the STOchastic LAttice Simulation (STOLAS) of cosmic inflation. It performs the numerical lattice simulation in the application of the stochastic-$δN$ formalism. STOLAS can directly compute the three-dimensional map of the observable curvature perturbation without estimating its statistical properties. In its application to two toy models of inflation, chaotic inflation and Starobinsky's linear-potential inflation, we confirm that STOLAS is well-consistent with the standard perturbation theory. Furthermore, by introducing the importance sampling technique, we have success in numerically sampling the current abundance of primordial black holes in a non-perturbative way. The package is available at https://github.com/STOchasticLAtticeSimulation/STOLAS_dist.

Chromo-natural inflation supported by enhanced friction from Horndeski gravity

We study the extension of the chromo-natural inflation model by incorporating nonminimal coupling between the axion field and gravity. Nonminimal coupling is introduced so that it enhances friction in the axion's equation of motion and thus supports slow-roll inflation. This enhanced friction effectively delays the activation of the gauge field, thereby preventing the overproduction of gravitational waves in the CMB scale. We extend previous results by describing the nonminimal coupling in a general and unifying way utilizing Horndeski gravity. This allows us to explore systematically and comprehensively possible enhanced friction models of chromo-natural inflation consistent with observations. We find a novel enhanced friction model that shows better agreement (within 1$σ$) with CMB measurements than the previous nonminimally coupled chromo-natural inflation model. The gravitational-wave spectrum starts to rise at some wavenumber due to retarded activation of the gauge field in the late stage of inflation. We show how one can identify the wavenumber at which this occurs based on the background evolution and present a universal analytic formula for the gravitational-wave spectrum that can be used for any enhanced friction model of chromo-natural inflation.

Parity-violating scalar trispectrum from a rolling axion during inflation

We study a mechanism of generating the trispectrum (4-point correlation) of curvature perturbation through the dynamics of a spectator axion field and U(1) gauge field during inflation. Owing to the Chern-Simons coupling, only one helicity mode of gauge field experiences a tachyonic instability and sources scalar perturbations. Sourced curvature perturbation exhibits parity-violating nature which can be tested through its trispectrum. We numerically compute parity-even and parity-odd component of the sourced trispectrum. It is found that the ratio of parity-odd to parity-even mode can reach O(10%) in an exact equilateral momentum configuration. We also investigate a quasi-equilateral shape where only one of the momenta is slightly longer than the other three, and find that the parity-odd mode can reach, and more interestingly, surpass the parity-even one. This may help us to interpret a large parity-odd trispectrum signal extracted from BOSS galaxy-clustering data.

How does SU($N$)-natural inflation isotropize the universe?

We study the homogeneous and anisotropic dynamics of pseudoscalar inflation coupled to an SU($N$) gauge field. To see how the initially anisotropic universe is isotropized in such an inflation model, we derive the equations to obtain axisymmetric SU($N$) gauge field configurations in Bianchi type-I geometry and discuss a method to identify their isotropic subsets which are the candidates of their late-time attractor. Each isotropic solution is characterized by the corresponding SU(2) subalgebra of the SU($N$) algebra. It is shown numerically that the isotropic universe is a universal late-time attractor in the case of the SU(3) gauge field. Interestingly, we find that a transition between the two distinct gauge-field configurations characterized by different SU(2) subalgebras can occur during inflation. We clarify the conditions for this to occur. This transition could leave an observable imprint on the CMB and the primordial gravitational wave background.

The isotropic attractor solution of axion-SU(2) inflation: Universal isotropization in Bianchi type-I geometry

SU(2) gauge fields coupled to an axion field can acquire an isotropic background solution during inflation. We study homogeneous but anisotropic inflationary solutions in the presence of such (massless) gauge fields. A gauge field in the cosmological background may pose a threat to spatial isotropy. We show, however, that such models $\textit{generally}$ isotropize in Bianchi type-I geometry, and the isotropic solution is the attractor. Restricting the setup by adding an axial symmetry, we revisited the numerical analysis presented in Wolfson et.al (2020). We find that the reported numerical breakdown in the previous analysis is an artifact of parametrization singularity. We use a new parametrization that is well-defined all over the phase space. We show that the system respects the cosmic no-hair conjecture and the anisotropies always dilute away within a few e-folds.

Dynamics of inflation with mutually orthogonal vector fields in a closed universe

We study the dynamics of a homogeneous, isotropic, and positively curved universe in the presence of a SU(2) gauge field or a triplet of mutually orthogonal vector fields. In the SU(2) case we use the previously known ansatz for the gauge-field configuration, but the case without non-abelian symmetries is more nontrivial and we develop a new ansatz. We in particular consider axion-SU(2) inflation and inflation with vector fields having U(1)$\times$U(1)$\times$U(1) symmetry, and analyze their dynamics in detail numerically. Novel effects of the spatial curvature come into play through vector fields, which causes unconventional pre-inflationary dynamics. It is found that the closed universe with vector fields is slightly more stable against collapse than that filled solely with an inflaton field.
