Morse and stable subgroups via the coset intersection complex

In this note, we study the equivalence of Morse and stable subgroups in the framework of the coset intersection complex. Under certain conditions on a coset intersection complex of a group, we prove that infinite-index Morse subgroups are stable.

A Combination Theorem for Geodesic Coarsely Convex Group Pairs

The first author and Oguni introduced a class of groups of non-positive curvature, called coarsely convex group. The recent success of the theory of groups which are hyperbolic relative to a collection of subgroups has motivated the study of other properties of groups from the relative perspective. In this article, we propose definitions for the notions of weakly semihyperbolic, semihyperbolic, and coarsely convex group pairs extending the corresponding notions in the non-relative case. The main result of this article is the following combination theorem. Let $\mathcal{A}_{wsh}$, $\mathcal{A}_{sh}$, and $\mathcal{A}_{gcc}$ denote the classes of group pairs that are weakly semihyperbolic, semihyperbolic, and geodesic coarsely convex respectively. Let $\mathcal A$ be one of the classes $\mathcal{A}_{wsh}$, $\mathcal{A}_{sh}$, and $\mathcal{A}_{gcc}$. Let $G$ be a group that splits as a finite graph of groups such that each vertex group $G_v$ is assigned a finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal{H}_v$, and each edge group $G_e$ is conjugate to a subgroup of some $H\in \mathcal{H}_v$ if $e$ is adjacent to $v$. Then there is a non-trivial finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal{H}$ of $G$ satisfying the following properties. If each $(G_v, \mathcal{H}_v)$ is in $\mathcal{A} $, then $(G,\mathcal{H})$ is in $\mathcal{A}$. The main results of the article are combination theorems generalizing results of Alonso and Bridson; and Fukaya and Matsuka.

Blown-up corona of relatively hyperbolic groups

We show that under appropriate assumptions, a blown-up corona of a relatively hyperbolic group is equivariant and the compactification of the universal space for proper action by the blown-up corona is contractible. As a corollary, we establish the formula to determine the covering dimension of the blown-up corona by the cohomological dimension of the group. We also show that the blown-up corona of a hyperbolic group with respect to an almost malnormal family of quasiconvex subgroups is homeomorphic to the Gromov boundary of the group.

Boundary of free products of metric spaces

In this paper, we compute (co)homologies of ideal boundaries of free products of geodesic coarsely convex spaces in terms of those of each of the components. The (co)homology theories we consider are, $K$-theory, Alexander-Spanier cohomology, $K$-homology, and Steenrod homology. These computations led to the computation of $K$-theory of the Roe algebra of free products of geodesic coarsely convex spaces via the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture.

Free products of coarsely convex spaces and the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture

The first author and Oguni introduced a wide class of metric spaces, called coarsely convex spaces. It includes Gromov hyperbolic metric spaces, CAT(0) spaces, systolic complexes, proper injective metric spaces. We introduce the notion of free products of metric spaces and show that free products of symmetric geodesic coarsely convex spaces are also symmetric geodesic coarsely convex spaces. As an application, it follows that free products of symmetric geodesic coarsely convex spaces satisfy the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture.

A topological decomposition of Busemann space

We show that a Busemann space $X$ which is covered by parallel bi-infinite geodesics is homeomorphic to a product of another Busemann space $Y$ and the real line. We also show that a semi-simple isometry on $X$ preserving the foliation by parallel geodesics canonically induces a semi-simple isometry on $Y$.

Visual maps between coarsely convex spaces

The class of coarsely convex spaces is a coarse geometric analogue of the class of nonpositively curved Riemannian manifolds. It includes Gromov hyperbolic spaces, CAT(0) spaces, proper injective metric spaces and systolic complexes. It is well known that quasi-isometric embeddings of Gromov hyperbolic spaces induce topological embeddings of their boundaries. Dydak and Virk studied maps between Gromov hyperbolic spaces which induce continuous maps between their boundaries. In this paper, we generalize their work to maps between coarsely convex spaces.

Coarse compactifications and controlled products

We introduce the notion of controlled products on metric spaces as a generalization of Gromov products, and construct boundaries by using controlled products, which we call the Gromov boundaries. It is shown that the Gromov boundary with respect to a controlled product on a proper metric space complements the space as a coarse compactification. It is also shown that there is a bijective correspondence between the set of all coarse equivalence classes of controlled products and the set of all equivalence classes of coarse compactifications.

A coarse Cartan-Hadamard theorem with application to the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture

We establish a coarse version of the Cartan-Hadamard theorem, which states that proper coarsely convex spaces are coarsely homotopy equivalent to the open cones of their ideal boundaries. As an application, we show that such spaces satisfy the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture. Combined with the result of Osajda-Przytycki, it implies that systolic groups and locally finite systolic complexes satisfy the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture.

The coarse Baum-Connes conjecture for Busemann non-positively curved spaces

We prove that the coarse assembly maps for proper metric spaces which are non-positively curved in the sense of Busemann are isomorphisms, where we do not assume that the spaces are with bounded coarse geometry. Also it is shown that we can calculate the coarse K-homology and the K-theory of the Roe algebra by using the visual boundaries.

Coronae of relatively hyperbolic groups and coarse cohomologies

We construct a corona of a relatively hyperbolic group by blowing-up all parabolic points of its Bowditch boundary. We relate the $K$-homology of the corona with the $K$-theory of the Roe algebra, via the coarse assembly map. We also establish a dual theory, that is, we relate the $K$-theory of the corona with the $K$-theory of the reduced stable Higson corona via the coarse co-assembly map. For that purpose, we formulate generalized coarse cohomology theories. As an application, we give an explicit computation of the $K$-theory of the Roe-algebra and that of the reduced stable Higson corona of the fundamental groups of closed 3-dimensional manifolds and of pinched negatively curved complete Riemannian manifolds with finite volume.

Coronae of product spaces and the Coarse Baum-Connes conjecture

We study the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture for product spaces and product groups. We show that a product of CAT(0) groups, polycyclic groups and relatively hyperbolic groups which satisfy some assumptions on peripheral subgroups, satisfies the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture. For this purpose, we construct and analyze an appropriate compactification and its boundary, "corona", of a product of proper metric spaces.

The coarse Baum-Connes conjecture for relatively hyperbolic groups

We study a group which is hyperbolic relative to a finite family of infinite subgroups. We show that the group satisfies the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture if each subgroup belonging to the family satisfies the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture and admits a finite universal space for proper actions. Especially, the group satisfies the analytic Novikov conjecture.

Sublinear Higson corornae of Euclidean cones

The aim of this paper is to introduce the sublinear Higson corona and show that the sublinear Higson corona of Euclidean cone of P and X is decomposed into the product of P and that of X. Here P is a compact metric space and X is unbounded proper metric space. For example, the sublinear Higson corona of n-dimensional Euclidean space is homeomorphic to the product of (n-1)-dimensional sphere and that of natural numbers.

Coarse dynamics and fixed point property

We investigate the fixed point property of the group actions on a coarse space and its Higson corona. We deduce the coarse version of Brouwer's fixed point theorem.

Application of Groebner bases to the cup-length of oriented Grassmann manifolds

We determine the cup-length of some oriented Grassmann manifolds by finding a Groebner basis associated with a certain subring of the cohomology of them. As its applications, we provide not only a lower but also an upper bound for the LS-category of some oriented Grassmann manifolds. We also study the immersion problem of them.
