Remote Inflation: Hybrid-like inflation without hybrid-type potential

A new scenario of hybrid-like inflation is considered without using hybrid-type potential. Radiation raised continuously by a dissipating inflaton field keeps symmetry restoration in a remote sector, and the false-vacuum energy of the remote sector dominates the energy density during inflation. Remote inflation is terminated when the temperature reaches the critical temperature, or when the slow-roll condition is violated. Without introducing a complex form of couplings, inflaton field may either roll-in (like a standard hybrid inflation) or roll-out (like an inverted-hybrid model or quintessential inflation) on arbitrary inflaton potential. Significant signatures of remote inflation can be observed in the spectrum caused by (1) the inhomogeneous phase transition in the remote sector, or (2) a successive phase transition in the remote sector. Remote inflation can predict strong amplification or suppression of small-scale perturbations without introducing multiple inflation. Since the inflaton may have a run-away potential, it is also possible to identify the inflaton with quintessence, without introducing additional mechanisms. Even if the false-vacuum energy is not dominated by the remote sector, the phase transition in the remote sector is possible during warm inflation, which may cause significant amplification/suppression of the curvature perturbations.

Cosmological perturbations from an inhomogeneous phase transition

A mechanism for generating metric perturbations in inflationary models is considered. Long-wavelength inhomogeneities of light scalar fields in a decoupled sector may give rise to superhorizon fluctuations of couplings and masses in the low-energy effective action. Cosmological phase transitions may then occur that are not simultaneous in space, but occur with time lags in different Hubble patches that arise from the long-wavelength inhomogeneities. Here an interesting model in which cosmological perturbations may be created at the electroweak phase transition is considered. The results show that phase transitions may be a generic source of non-Gaussianity.

Curvatons and inhomogeneous scenarios with deviation from slow-roll

The spectral index is studied at the point where scalar fields deviate from slow-roll during inflation. Considering the deviation that may cause a significant difference to the time derivative of the Hubble parameter and also to the terms in the evolution equation, we show how the deviation affects the spectral index of the curvature perturbations. Considering conventional inflation, curvatons and other inhomogeneous scenarios as mechanisms for generating the cosmological perturbation, we examine whether the spectral index induced by the deviation from the standard slow-roll can explain the spectral index n-1>0 at k=0.002/Mpc while keeping n-1<0 at a smaller scale.

Non-standard kinetic term as a natural source of non-Gaussianity

We consider reheating after inflation with a non-standard kinetic term. We show that the difference in the kinetic term in different Hubble patches inherited from the long-wavelength moduli inhomogeneities may generate a significant level of non-Gaussianity after inflation.

Modulated Inflation (@SUSY08)

We consider cosmological perturbations caused by modulated inflaton velocity. During inflation, the inflaton motion is damped and the velocity is determined by the parameters such as couplings or masses that may depend on light fields(moduli). The number of e-foldings is different in different patches if there are spatial fluctuations of such parameters. Based on this simple idea, we consider ``modulated inflation'' in which the curvature perturbation is generated by the fluctuation of the inflaton velocity. This talk is based on our recent papers.

Modulated Inflation

We have studied modulated inflation that generates curvature perturbation from light-field fluctuation. As discussed in previous works, even if the fluctuation of the inflaton itself does not generate the curvature perturbation at the horizon crossing, fluctuation of a light field may induce fluctuation for the end-line of inflation and this may lead to generation of cosmological perturbation ``at the end of the inflation''. Our scenario is different from those that are based on the fluctuations of the boundary of the inflaton trajectory, as clearly explained in this paper by using the $δN$ formalism. In this paper, we will consider the perturbation of the inflaton velocity that can be induced by a light field other than the inflaton. We also explain the crucial difference from the standard multi-field inflation model. We show concrete examples of the modulated inflation scenario in which non-gaussianity can be generated. We also discuss the running of the non-gaussianity parameter.

Modulated inflation from kinetic term

We study modulated inflation from kinetic term. Using the Mukhanov-Sasaki variable, it is possible to determine how mixing induced by the kinetic term feeds the curvature perturbation with the isocurvature perturbation. We show explicitly that the analytic result obtained from the evolution of the Mukhanov-Sasaki variable is consistent with the $δN$-formula. From our results, we find analytic conditions for the modulated fluctuation and the non-Gaussianity parameter.

Running spectral index from shooting-star moduli

We construct an inflationary model that is consistent with both large non-Gaussianity and a running spectral index. The scenario of modulated inflation suggests that modulated perturbation can induce the curvature perturbation with a large non-Gaussianity, even if the inflaton perturbation is negligible. Using this idea, we consider a multi-field extension of the modulated inflation scenario and examine the specific situation where different moduli are responsible for the perturbation at different scales. We suppose that the additional moduli (shooting-star moduli) is responsible for the curvature perturbation at the earlier inflationary epoch and it generates the fluctuation with n>1 spectral index at this scale. After a while, another moduli (or inflaton) takes the place and generates the perturbation with n<1. At the transition point the two fluctuations are comparable with each other. We show how the spectral index is affected by the transition induced by the shooting-star moduli.

Hilltop Curvatons

We study ``hilltop'' curvatons that evolve on a convex potential. Hilltop curvatons evolving on the Hubble-induced potential are generic if supergravity is assumed in the theory. We do not consider curvatons whose potential is protected from $O(H)$ corrections, where $H$ is the Hubble parameter. We assume that the effective mass of a curvaton is expressed as $m_σ= c H$, where the coefficient varies within $0.2 \le c \le 5$ depending on the circumstances. A negative mass term may lead to enhancement of curvaton fluctuation, which has a significant impact on the energy bound for low-scale inflation. Using a simple curvaton model and following the conventional curvaton hypothesis, we demonstrate the generality of this enhancement.

Inhomogeneous preheating in multi-field models of cosmological perturbation

We consider inhomogeneous preheating in multi-field models of cosmological perturbation. After preheating, two fields are trapped at an enhanced symmetric point. One field is an oscillating field and the other is a light field that plays an important role in generating perturbation. In this presentation, we consider two types of potential for the light field.

Hybrid Curvatons from Broken Symmetry

We present a new general mechanism for generating curvature perturbations after inflation. Our model is based on the simple assumption that a field that starts to oscillate after inflation has a potential characterized by an underlying global symmetry that is slightly or badly broken. Inhomogeneous preheating occurs due to the oscillation with the broken symmetry. Unlike the traditional curvaton model, we will not identify the curvaton with the oscillating field. The curvaton is identified with the preheat field that could be either a scalar, vector, or fermionic field. We introduce an explicit mass term for the curvaton, which is important for later evolution and the decay. Our present model represents the simplest example of the hybrid of the curvatons and inhomogeneous preheating.

NO Curvatons or Hybrid Quintessential Inflation

We consider a curvaton scenario in which the late-time domination and the generation of the curvature perturbation is achieved by a non-oscillatory (NO) curvaton potential. Instead of considering the conventional curvaton oscillation, we consider ``weak trapping'' after preheating, which modifies the evolution of the curvaton density after preheating. The primordial isocurvature perturbation related to the curvaton is once converted into the fluctuation of the number density of the preheat field through inhomogeneous preheating. Then the evolution of the curvatons and the preheat field is controlled by the preheat-field number density. The density of these fields decreases slightly slower than the standard matter density which suggests that these fields will grow with time. Finally, the preheat field decays to reheat the Universe leaving behind the curvature perturbation. In our scenario the task of the standard curvaton is not executed solely by the curvaton itself but is partially shared with the preheat field. NO curvatons can be considered as the hybrid version of the quintessential inflationary model.

Cosmological perturbations from inhomogeneous preheating and multi-field trapping

We consider inhomogeneous preheating in a multi-field trapping model. The curvature perturbation is generated by inhomogeneous preheating which induces multi-field trapping at the enhanced symmetric point (ESP), and results in fluctuation in the number of e-foldings. Instead of considering simple reheating after preheating, we consider a scenario of shoulder inflation induced by the trapping. The fluctuation in the number of e-foldings is generated during this weak inflationary period, when the additional light scalar field is trapped at the local maximum of its potential. The situation may look similar to locked or thermal inflation or even to hybrid inflation, but we will show that the present mechanism of generating the curvature perturbation is very different from these others. Unlike the conventional trapped inflationary scenario, we do not make the assumption that an ESP appears at some unstable point on the inflaton potential. This assumption is crucial in the original scenario, but it is not important in the multi-field model. We also discuss inhomogeneous preheating at late-time oscillation, in which the magnitude of the curvature fluctuation can be enhanced to accommodate low inflationary scale.

Generating curvature perturbations with or without MSSM flat directions

We consider instant preheating as the mechanism for generating the curvature perturbation at the end of chaotic inflation. Then we examine if inflation could be driven by a Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) flat direction or a sneutrino. Our simple mechanism relaxes some serious constraints that appeared in past studies, making inflation driven by a MSSM flat direction or a sneutrino more plausible.

Brane inflation without slow-roll

The scenario of brane inflation without using the conventional slow-roll approximations has been investigated. Based on the mechanism of generating the curvature perturbations at the end of inflation, a new brane inflation paradigm was developed. The conditions for making a sufficiently large enough number of e-foldings and for generating the curvature perturbations without producing dangerous relics were also examined. Benefits of our scenario are subsequently discussed in detail.

Generating the curvature perturbation with instant preheating

A new mechanism for generating the curvature perturbation at the end of inflaton has been investigated. The dominant contribution to the primordial curvature perturbation may be generated during the period of instant preheating. The mechanism converts isocurvature perturbation related to a light field into curvature perturbation, where the ``light field'' is not the inflaton field. This mechanism is important in inflationary models where kinetic energy is significant at the end of inflaton. We show how one can apply this mechanism to various brane inflationary models.
