Decentralized Learning of Generative Adversarial Networks from Non-iid Data

This work addresses a new problem that learns generative adversarial networks (GANs) from multiple data collections that are each i) owned separately by different clients and ii) drawn from a non-identical distribution that comprises different classes. Given such non-iid data as input, we aim to learn a distribution involving all the classes input data can belong to, while keeping the data decentralized in each client storage. Our key contribution to this end is a new decentralized approach for learning GANs from non-iid data called Forgiver-First Update (F2U), which a) asks clients to train an individual discriminator with their own data and b) updates a generator to fool the most `forgiving' discriminators who deem generated samples as the most real. Our theoretical analysis proves that this updating strategy allows the decentralized GAN to achieve a generator's distribution with all the input classes as its global optimum based on f-divergence minimization. Moreover, we propose a relaxed version of F2U called Forgiver-First Aggregation (F2A) that performs well in practice, which adaptively aggregates the discriminators while emphasizing forgiving ones. Our empirical evaluations with image generation tasks demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach over state-of-the-art decentralized learning methods.

On Cosmic No-hair in Bimetric Gravity and the Higuchi Bound

We study the cosmic no-hair in the presence of spin-2 matter, i.e. in bimetric gravity. We obtain stable de Sitter solutions with the cosmological constant in the physical sector and find an evidence that the cosmic no-hair is correct. In the presence of the other cosmological constant, there are two branches of de Sitter solutions. Under anisotropic perturbations, one of them is always stable and there is no violation of the cosmic no-hair at the linear level. The stability of the other branch depends on parameters and the cosmic no-hair can be violated in general. Remarkably, the bifurcation point of two branches exactly coincides with the Higuchi bound. It turns out that there exists a de Sitter solution for which the cosmic no-hair holds at the linear level and the effective mass for the anisotropic perturbations is above the Higuchi bound.

Instability of Charged Lovelock Black Holes: Vector Perturbations and Scalar Perturbations

We examine the stability of charged Lovelock black hole solutions under vector type and scalar type perturbations. We find the suitable master variables for the stability analysis; the equations for these variables are the Schrodinger type equations with two components and these Schrodinger operators are symmetric. By these master equations, we show that charged Lovelock Black holes are stable under vector type perturbations. For scalar type perturbations, we show the criteria for the instability and check these numerically. In our previous paper, we have shown that nearly extremal black holes have the instability under tensor type perturbations. In this paper, we find that black holes with small charge have the instability under scalar type perturbations even if they have relatively large mass.

Pathologies in Lovelock AdS Black Branes and AdS/CFT

We study the pathologies in AdS black branes in Lovelock theory. More precisely, we examine the conditions that AdS black branes have the naked singularity, the ghost instability and the dynamical instability. From the point of view of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the pathologies in AdS black branes indicate the pathologies in the corresponding CFT. Hence, we need to be careful when we apply AdS/CFT in Lovelock theory to various phenomena such as the shear viscosity to entropy ratio in strongly coupled quantum filed theory.

Fatal Effects of Charges on Stability of Black Holes in Lovelock Theory

We study the stability of static spherically symmetric charged black holes under tensor type perturbations in Lovelock theory which is a natural higher dimensional generalization of Einstein theory. We derive the master equation for tensor type perturbations and present the criterions for the stability. Examining these criterions numerically, we show that a black hole with small charge has the instability if its mass is as small as extreme mass. Combined with our previous result that neutral black hole has no dynamical instability in odd dimensions, this result suggests that charges have fatal effects on black holes in Lovelock theory.

Catastrophic Instability of Small Lovelock Black Holes

We study the stability of static black holes in Lovelock theory which is a natural higher dimensional generalization of Einstein theory. We show that Lovelock black holes are stable under vector perturbations in all dimensions. However, we prove that small Lovelock black holes are unstable under tensor perturbations in even-dimensions and under scalar perturbations in odd-dimensions. Therefore, we can conclude that small Lovelock black holes are unstable in any dimensions. The instability is stronger on small scales and hence catastrophic in the sense that there is no smooth descendant.

Hawking Radiation from Fluctuating Black Holes

Classically, black Holes have the rigid event horizon. However, quantum mechanically, the event horizon of black holes becomes fuzzy due to quantum fluctuations. We study Hawking radiation of a real scalar field from a fluctuating black hole. To quantize metric perturbations, we derive the quadratic action for those in the black hole background. Then, we calculate the cubic interaction terms in the action for the scalar field. Using these results, we obtain the spectrum of Hawking radiation in the presence of interaction between the scalar field and the metric. It turns out that the spectrum deviates from the Planck spectrum due to quantum fluctuations of the metric.

Instability of Small Lovelock Black Holes in Even-dimensions

We study the stability of static black holes in Lovelock theory which is a natural higher dimensional generalization of Einstein theory. We derive a master equation for tensor perturbations in general Lovelock theory. It turns out that the resultant equation is characterized by one functional which determines the background black hole solutions. Thus, the stability issue of static black holes under tensor perturbations in general dimensions is reduced to an algebraic problem. We show that small Lovelock black holes in even-dimensions are unstable.

Chiral Primordial Gravitational Waves from a Lifshitz Point

We study primordial gravitational waves produced during inflation in quantum gravity at a Lifshitz point proposed by Ho${\rm\check{r}}$ava. Assuming power-counting renormalizability, foliation preserving diffeomorphism invariance, and the condition of detailed balance, we show that primordial gravitational waves are circularly polarized due to parity violation. The chirality of primordial gravitational waves is a quite robust prediction of quantum gravity at a Lifshitz point which can be tested through observations of cosmic microwave background radiation and stochastic gravitational waves.

Spin-polarized electronic structures and transport properties of Fe-Co alloys

The electrical resistivities of Fe-Co alloys owing to random alloy disorder are calculated using the Kubo-Greenwood formula. The obtained electrical esistivities agree well with experimental data quantitatively at low temperature. The spin-polarization of Fe50Co50 estimated from the conductivity (86%) has opposite sign to that from the densities of the states at the Fermi level (-73%). It is found that the conductivity is governed mainly by s-electrons, and the s-electrons in the minority spin states are less conductive due to strong scattering by the large densities of the states of d-electrons than the majority spin electrons.

Stability of Lovelock Black Holes under Tensor Perturbations

We study the stability of static black holes in the third order Lovelock theory. We derive a master equation for tensor perturbations. Using the master equation, we analyze the stability of Lovelock black holes mainly in seven and eight dimensions. We find there are cases where the linear analysis breaks down. If we restrict ourselves to the regime where the linear analysis is legitimate, black holes are always stable in seven dimensions. However, in eight dimensions, there exists a critical mass below which black holes are unstable. Combining our result in the third order Lovelock theory with the previous one in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, we conjecture that small black holes are unstable in any dimensions. The instability found in this paper will be important for the analysis of black holes at the LHC.
