Identification of Absorption Lines of Heavy Metals in the Wavelength Range 0.97--1.32 Micron

Stellar absorption lines of heavy elements can give us various insights into the chemical evolution of the Galaxy and nearby galaxies. Recently developed spectrographs for the near-infrared wavelengths are becoming more and more powerful for producing a large number of high-quality spectra, but identification and characterization of the absorption lines in the infrared range remain to be fulfilled. We searched for lines of the elements heavier than the iron group, i.e., those heavier than Ni, in the Y (9760--11100 AA) and J (11600--13200 AA) bands. We considered the lines in three catalogs, i.e., Vienna Atomic Line Database (VALD), the compilation by R. Kurucz, and the list published in 1999 by Melendez and Barbuy. Candidate lines were selected based on synthetic spectra and the confirmation was done by using WINERED spectra of 13 supergiants and giants within FGK spectral types (spanning 4000--7200 K in the effective temperature). We have detected lines of Zn I, Sr II, Y II, Zr I, Ba II, Sm II, Eu II, and Dy II, in the order of atomic number. Although the number of the lines is small, 23 in total, they are potentially useful diagnostic lines of the Galactic chemical evolution, especially in the regions for which interstellar extinction hampers detailed chemical analyses with spectra in shorter wavelengths. We also report the detection of lines whose presence was not predicted by the synthetic spectra created with the above three line lists.

First detection of $A$--$X$ (0,0) bands of interstellar C$_2$ and CN

We report the first detection of C$_2$ $A^1Π_u$--$X^1Σ_g^+$ (0,0) and CN $A^2Π_u$--$X^2Σ^+$ (0,0) absorption bands in the interstellar medium. The detection was made using the near-infrared (0.91--1.35 $μ$m) high-resolution ($R=20,000$ and 68,000) spectra of Cygnus OB2 No.\,12 collected with the WINERED spectrograph mounted on the 1.3 m Araki telescope. The $A$--$X$ (1,0) bands of C$_2$ and CN were detected simultaneously. These near-infrared bands have larger oscillator strengths, compared with the $A$--$X$ (2,0) bands of C$_2$ and CN in the optical. In the spectrum of the C$_2$ (0,0) band with $R=68,000$, three velocity components in the line of sight could be resolved and the lines were detected up to high rotational levels ($J''\sim20$). By analyzing the rotational distribution of C$_2$, we could estimate the kinetic temperature and gas density of the clouds with high accuracy. Furthermore, we marginally detected weak lines of $^{12}$C$^{13}$C for the first time in the interstellar medium. Assuming that the rotational distribution and the oscillator strengths of the relevant transitions of $^{12}$C$_2$ and $^{12}$C$^{13}$C are the same, the carbon isotope ratio was estimated to be $^{12}\text{C}/^{13}\text{C}=50$--100, which is consistent with the ratio in the local interstellar medium. We also calculated the oscillator strength ratio of the C$_2$ (0,0) and (1,0) bands from the observed band strengths. Unfortunately, our result could not discern theoretical and experimental results because of the uncertainties. High-resolution data to resolve the velocity components will be necessary for both bands in order to put stronger constraints on the oscillator strength ratios.

FeI lines in 0.91-1.33 ${\rm μ}$m spectra of red giants for measuring the microturbulence and metallicities

For a detailed analysis of stellar chemical abundances, high-resolution spectra in the optical have mainly been used, while the development of near-infrared (NIR) spectrograph has opened new wavelength windows. Red giants have a large number of resolved absorption lines in both the optical and NIR wavelengths, but the characteristics of the lines in different wave passbands are not necessarily the same. We present a selection of FeI lines in the $z^{\prime}$, $Y$, and $J$ bands (0.91-1.33 $μ$m). On the basis of two different lists of lines in this range, the Vienna Atomic Line Database (VALD) and the catalog published by Meléndez & Barbuy in 1999 (MB99), we selected sufficiently strong lines that are not severely blended and compiled lists with 107 FeI lines in total (97 and 75 lines from VALD and MB99, respectively). Combining our lists with high-resolution ($λ/Δλ= 28,000$) and high signal-to-noise ($>500$) spectra taken with a NIR spectrograph, WINERED, we present measurements of the iron abundances of two prototype red giants: Arcturus and $μ$ Leo. A bootstrap method for determining the microturbulence and abundance together with their errors is demonstrated. The standard deviations of $\logε_{\rm Fe}$ values from individual FeI lines are significantly smaller when we use the lines from MB99 instead of those from VALD. With the MB99 list, we obtained $ξ=1.20\pm0.11\ {\rm km~s^{-1}}$ and $\logε_{\rm Fe}=7.01\pm0.05$ dex for Arcturus, and $ξ=1.54\pm0.17\ {\rm km~s^{-1}}$ and $\logε_{\rm Fe}=7.73\pm0.07$ dex for $μ$ Leo. These final values show better agreements with previous values in the literature than the corresponding values we obtained with VALD.

Correction of near-infrared high-resolution spectra for telluric absorption at 0.90-1.35 microns

We report a method of correcting a near-infrared (0.90-1.35 $μ$m) high-resolution ($λ/Δλ\sim28,000$) spectrum for telluric absorption using the corresponding spectrum of a telluric standard star. The proposed method uses an A0\,V star or its analog as a standard star from which on the order of 100 intrinsic stellar lines are carefully removed with the help of a reference synthetic telluric spectrum. We find that this method can also be applied to feature-rich objects having spectra with heavily blended intrinsic stellar and telluric lines and present an application to a G-type giant using this approach. We also develop a new diagnostic method for evaluating the accuracy of telluric correction and use it to demonstrate that our method achieves an accuracy better than 2\% for spectral parts for which the atmospheric transmittance is as low as $\sim$20\% if telluric standard stars are observed under the following conditions: (1) the difference in airmass between the target and the standard is $\lesssim 0.05$; and (2) that in time is less than 1 h. In particular, the time variability of water vapor has a large impact on the accuracy of telluric correction and minimizing the difference in time from that of the telluric standard star is important especially in near-infrared high-resolution spectroscopic observation.

The Subaru-XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) VIII.: Multi-wavelength Identification, Optical/NIR Spectroscopic Properties, and Photometric Redshifts of X-ray Sources

We report the multi-wavelength identification of the X-ray sources found in the Subaru-XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) using deep imaging data covering the wavelength range between the far-UV to the mid-IR. We select a primary counterpart of each X-ray source by applying the likelihood ratio method to R-band, 3.6micron, near-UV, and 24micron source catalogs as well as matching catalogs of AGN candidates selected in 1.4GHz radio and i'-band variability surveys. Once candidates of Galactic stars, ultra-luminous X-ray sources in a nearby galaxy, and clusters of galaxies are removed there are 896 AGN candidates in the sample. We conduct spectroscopic observations of the primary counterparts with multi-object spectrographs in the optical and NIR; 65\% of the X-ray AGN candidates are spectroscopically-identified. For the remaining X-ray AGN candidates, we evaluate their photometric redshift with photometric data in 15 bands. Utilising the multi-wavelength photometric data of the large sample of X-ray selected AGNs, we evaluate the stellar masses, M*, of the host galaxies of the narrow-line AGNs. The distribution of the stellar mass is remarkably constant from z=0.1 to 4.0. The relation between M* and 2--10 keV luminosity can be explained with strong cosmological evolution of the relationship between the black hole mass and M*. We also evaluate the scatter of the UV-MIR spectral energy distribution (SED) of the X-ray AGNs as a function of X-ray luminosity and absorption to the nucleus. The scatter is compared with galaxies which have redshift and stellar mass distribution matched with the X-ray AGN. The UV-NIR SEDs of obscured X-ray AGNs are similar to those of the galaxies in the matched sample. In the NIR-MIR range, the median SEDs of X-ray AGNs are redder, but the scatter of the SEDs of the X-ray AGN broadly overlaps that of the galaxies in the matched sample.

Development of a Fine Grating on ZnS for a Wideband Spectral Disperser in Characterizing Exoplanets using Space-borne Telescopes

We present the fabrication and optical testing of a fine grating on a ZnS substrate to be used as a wideband infrared spectral disperser and for which the primary application is measurement of the composition of the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets using space-borne infrared astronomical telescopes. A grating with a blaze angle of 2.1 deg. and pitch of 166.667 midron was constructed on a roughly flat 10 mm x 10 mm substrate with a maximum thickness of 1 mm. To obtain high accuracy, the sample was fabricated on a ZnS monocrystal using a high performance processing machine at Canon Inc. The surface roughness measured with a microscope interferometer was 2.6 nm rms. The shape of the fabricated grating edges was examined with a scanning electron microscope. The diffraction efficiency was evaluated by optical experiments at λ = 633 nm, 980 nm, and 1550 nm, and compared with the efficiencies calculated using a Fourier Modal Method. The results showed that the differences between the diffraction efficiencies obtained from experiment and by calculation were between just 0.9 % and 2.4 %. We concluded that the quality of the fabricated ZnS grating was sufficiently high to provide excellent diffraction efficiency for use in the infrared wavelength region. We also present the design of a spectral disperser in CdTe for future more advanced performance.

The Formation of the massive galaxies in the SSA22 z=3.1 protocluster

The properties of K-band selected galaxies (K_AB<24) in the z = 3.09 SSA22 protocluster field are studied. 430 galaxies at 2.6 < z_phot < 3.6 are selected as potential protocluster members in a 112 arcmin^2 area based on their photometric redshifts. We find that \approx 20% of the massive galaxies with stellar masses >10^11 M_sun at z_phot \sim 3.1 have colors consistent with those of quiescent galaxies with ages > 0.5 Gyr. This fraction increases to \approx 50% after correcting for unrelated foreground/background objects. We also find that 30% of the massive galaxies are heavily reddened dusty star-forming galaxies. Few such quiescent galaxies at similar redshifts are seen in typical survey fields. An excess surface density of 24μm sources at z_phot \sim 3.1 is also observed, implying the presence of dusty star-formation activity in the protocluster. Cross-correlation with the X-ray data indicates that the fraction of K-band selected protocluster galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN) is also high compared with the field. The sky distribution of the quiescent galaxies, the 24μm sources, and the X-ray AGNs show clustering around a density peak of z=3.1 Lyαemitters (LAEs). A significant fraction of the massive galaxies have already become quiescent, while the dusty star-formation is still active in the SSA22 protocluster. These findings indicate that we are witnessing the formation epoch of massive early-type galaxies at the center of predecessors to present-day rich galaxy clusters.

Assembly of Massive Galaxies in a High-z Protocluster

We present the results of wide-field deep JHK imaging of the SSA22 field using MOIRCS instrument equipped with Subaru telescope. The observed field is 112 arcmin^2 in area, which covers the z=3.1 protocluster characterized by the overdensities of Ly Alpha emitters (LAEs) and Ly Alpha Blobs (LABs). The 5 sigma limiting magnitude is K_{AB} = 24.3. We extract the potential protocluster members from the K-selected sample by using the multi-band photometric-redshift selection as well as the simple color cut for distant red galaxies (DRGs; J-K_{AB}>1.4). The surface number density of DRGs in our observed fields shows clear excess compared with those in the blank fields, and the location of the densest area whose projected overdensity is twice the average coincides with the large-scale density peak of LAEs. We also found that K-band counterparts with z_{phot} = 3.1 are detected for 75% (15/20) of the LABs within their Ly Alpha halo, and the 40 % (8/20) of LABs have multiple components, which gives a direct evidence of the hierarchical multiple merging in galaxy formation. The stellar mass ofLABs correlates with their luminosity, isophotal area, and the Ly Alpha velocity widths, implying that the physical scale and the dynamical motion of Ly Alpha emission are closely related to their previous star-formation activities. Highly dust-obscured galaxies such as hyper extremely red objects (HEROs; J-K_{AB}>2.1) and plausible K-band counterparts of submillimeter sources are also populated in the high density region.

Cryogenic Volume-Phase Holograpic Grisms for MOIRCS

We have developed high dispersion VPH (volume phase holographic) grisms with zinc selenide (ZnSe) prisms for the cryogenic optical system of MOIRCS (Multi-Object near InfraRed Camera and Spectrograph) for Y-, J-, H- and K- band observations. We fabricated the VPH gratings using a hologram resin. After several heat cycles at between room temperature and 120 K, the VPH gratings were assembled to grisms by gluing with two ZnSe prisms. Several heat cycles were also carried out for the grisms before being installed into MOIRCS. We measured the efficiencies of the VPH grisms in a laboratory, and found them to be 70% - 82%. The performances obtained by observations of MOIRCS with the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope have been found to be very consistent with the results in the laboratory test. This is the first astronomical application of cryogenic VPH grisms.

MOIRCS Deep Survey. IX. Deep Near-Infrared Imaging Data and Source Catalog

We present deep J-, H-, and Ks-band imaging data of the MOIRCS Deep Survey (MODS), which was carried out with Multi-Object Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) mounted on the Subaru telescope in the GOODS-North region. The data reach 5sigma total limiting magnitudes for point sources of J=23.9, H=22.8, and Ks=22.8 (Vega magnitude) over 103 arcmin^2 (wide field). In 28 arcmin^2 of the survey area, which is ultra deep field of the MODS (deep field), the data reach the 5sigma depths of J=24.8, H=23.4, and Ks=23.8. The spatial resolutions of the combined images are FWHM ~ 0.6 arcsec and ~ 0.5 arcsec for the wide and deep fields in all bands, respectively. Combining the MODS data with the multi-wavelength public data taken with the HST, Spitzer, and other ground-based telescopes in the GOODS field, we construct a multi-wavelength photometric catalog of Ks-selected sources. Using the catalog, we present Ks-band number counts and near-infrared color distribution of the detected objects, and demonstrate some selection techniques with the NIR colors for high redshift galaxies. These data and catalog are publicly available via internet.

MOIRCS Deep Survey. VII: NIR Morphologies of Star-forming Galaxies at Redshift z~1

We investigate rest-frame near-infrared (NIR) morphologies of a sample of 139 galaxies with M_{s} >= 1 x 10^{10} M_{sun} at z=0.8-1.2 in the GOODS-North field using our deep NIR imaging data (MOIRCS Deep Survey, MODS). We focus on Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs), which dominate high star formation rate (SFR) density at z~1, in the sample identified by cross-correlating with the Spitzer/MIPS 24um source catalog. We perform two-dimensional light profile fitting of the z~1 galaxies in the Ks-band (rest-frame J-band) with a single component Sersic model. We find that at z~1, ~90% of LIRGs have low Sersic indices (n<2.5, similar to disk-like galaxies) in the Ks-band, and those disk-like LIRGs consist of ~60% of the whole disk-like sample above M_{s} >= 3 x 10^{10} M_{sun}. The z~1 disk-like LIRGs are comparable or ~20% small at a maximum in size compared to local disk-like galaxies in the same stellar mass range. If we examine rest-frame UV-optical morphologies using the HST/ACS images, the rest-frame B-band sizes of the z~1 disk-like galaxies are comparable to those of the local disk-like galaxies as reported by previous studies on size evolution of disk-like galaxies in the rest-frame optical band. Measuring color gradients (galaxy sizes as a function of wavelength) of the z~1 and local disk-like galaxies, we find that the z~1 disk-like galaxies have 3-5 times steeper color gradient than the local ones. Our results indicate that (i) more than a half of relatively massive disk-like galaxies at z~1 are in violent star formation epochs observed as LIRGs, and also (ii) most of those LIRGs are constructing their fundamental disk structure vigorously. The high SFR density in the universe at z~1 may be dominated by such star formation in disk region in massive galaxies.

MOIRCS Deep Survey. VI. Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of K-Selected Star-Forming Galaxies at z~2

We present near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for 37 BzK-color-selected star-forming galaxies with MOIRCS on Subaru. The sample is drawn from the Ks-band selected catalog of the MOIRCS Deep Survey (MODS) in the GOODS-N region. About half of our samples are selected from the MIPS 24um-source catalog. Ha emission lines are detected from 23 galaxies, of which the median redshift is 2.12. We derived the star formation rates (SFRs) from extinction-corrected Ha luminosities. The extinction correction is estimated from the SED fitting of multi-band photometric data covering UV to NIR wavelengths. The Balmer decrement of the stacked emission lines shows that the amount of extinction for the ionized gas is larger than that for the stellar continuum. From a comparison of the extinction corrected Ha luminosity and other SFR indicators we found that the relation between the dust properties of stellar continuum and ionized gas is different depending on the intrinsic SFR. The comparison between the Ha SFR and stellar mass estimated from SED fitting shows no correlation between them. Some galaxies with stellar mass smaller than ~10^10 Msun show SFRs higher than ~100 Msun/yr. The specific SFRs (SSFRs) of these galaxies are remarkably high. The average stellar-population age of these high-SSFR galaxies is younger than 100 Myr, which is consistent with the implied high SSFR. The large SFR implies the possibility that the high SSFR galaxies significantly contribute to the cosmic SFR density of the universe at z~2. The total SFR density estimated from the Ha emission line galaxies is 0.089-0.136 Msun/yr/Mpc^3, which is consistent with the total SFR densities in the literature. The metallicity of the high-SSFR galaxies is larger than that expected from the mass-metallicity relation of UV-selected galaxies at z~2 by Erb et al. (2006a). [Abridged]

Subaru/MOIRCS Near-Infrared Imaging in the Proto-Cluster Region at z=3.1

We present the results of deep near-infrared imaging observations of the z=3.1 proto-cluster region in the SSA22a field taken by MOIRCS mounted on the Subaru Telescope. We observed a 21.7 arcmin^2 field to the depths of J=24.5, H=24.3, and K=23.9 (5 sigma). We examine the distribution of the K-selected galaxies at z~3 by using the simple color cut for distant red galaxies (DRGs) as well as the photometric-redshift selection technique. The marginal density excess of DRGs and the photo-z selected objects are found around the two most luminous Ly alpha blobs (LABs). We investigate the correlation between the K-selected objects and the LABs, and find that several galaxies with stellar mass M_* = 10^9-10^11 M_solar exist in vicinity of LABs, especially around the two most luminous ones. We also find that 7 of the 8 LABs in the field have plausible K_s-band counterparts and the sum of the stellar mass possibly associated with LABs correlates with the luminosity and surface brightness of them, which implies that the origin of Ly alpha emission may be closely correlated with their stellar mass or their previous star formation phenomena.

MOIRCS Deep Survey. II. Clustering Properties of K-band Selected Galaxies in GOODS-North Region

We present the first measurement of clustering properties of low mass galaxies with a stellar mass down to M_*~10^9 Msun at 1 1.3 show a large bias of b~7.2+-1.3 on scales up to θ~100" or 3.1 comoving Mpc, while blue galaxies with 0.5 ~10^{10} Msun, we estimate a correlation length and bias to be r_0~4.5 h^{-1} Mpc and b=1.9-3.5, which are much larger than those of low mass (M_*~10^9-10^{10} Msun) galaxies. The comparison of our measurements with analytic CDM models constrains the properties of hosting dark halos, and indicates that the low mass galaxies would be progenitors of galaxies with a typical luminosity of L<~L_* in the local Universe. The blue galaxies in low mass samples are more strongly clustered in more massive halos with higher occupation numbers than low mass red galaxies. This fact suggests an environment effect due to the halo mass on star formation activity at high-z.

MOIRCS Deep Survey. I: DRG Number Counts

We use very deep near-infrared imaging data taken with Multi-Object InfraRed Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) on the Subaru Telescope to investigate the number counts of Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs). We have observed a 4x7 arcmin^2 field in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N), and our data reach J=24.6 and K=23.2 (5sigma, Vega magnitude). The surface density of DRGs selected by J-K>2.3 is 2.35+-0.31 arcmin^-2 at K<22 and 3.54+-0.38 arcmin^-2 at K<23, respectively. These values are consistent with those in the GOODS-South and FIRES. Our deep and wide data suggest that the number counts of DRGs turn over at K~22, and the surface density of the faint DRGs with K>22 is smaller than that expected from the number counts at the brighter magnitude. The result indicates that while there are many bright galaxies at 2 22 suggest that the mass-dependent color distribution, where most of low-mass galaxies are blue while more massive galaxies tend to have redder colors, had already been established at that epoch.
