Higher-order topological phases in a spring-mass model on a breathing kagome lattice

We propose a realization of higher-order topological phases in a spring-mass model with a breathing kagome structure. To demonstrate the existence of the higher-order topological phases, we characterize the topological properties and show that the corner states appear under the fixed boundary condition. To characterize the topological properties, we introduce a formula for the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Berry phases in the Brillouin zone. From the numerical result of this $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Berry phase, we have elucidated that coupling between the longitudinal and transverse modes yields a state characterized by the Berry phase $\frac{2π}{3}$ for our mechanical breathing kagome model. In addition, we suggest that the corner states can be detected experimentally through a forced vibration.

Oriented propagation of magnetization due to chiral edge modes in Kitaev-type models

Detecting chiral edge modes in topological materials has been intensively pursued in experiments. However, the phenomena caused by the modes are not yet elucidated theoretically. We study the dynamics of chiral spinon wave packets at the edge in Kitaev-type magnets. More precisely, by relying on the exact solvability of the models, we construct a spinon wave packet, localized edge magnetization, which shows oriented propagation along the edge, whose behavior is expected from the chiral character of the dispersion relation of the chiral edge modes. In general, this approach enables us to study not only spin transport in anisotropic magnets but also charge transport in Bogoliubov-de Gennes-type superconductors because it does not rely on a conserved quantity.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction between Multipolar Moments in $5d^1$ Systems

We propose a new type of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions which act on high-rank multipolar moments such as quadrupolar and octupolar moments. Here we consider 5d1 systems with broken spatial inversion symmetry, where the interplay of electron correlation, the spin-orbit coupling, and inversion symmetry breaking plays a crucial role. Using a numerical diagonalization on a two-site multiorbital Hubbard model, we reveal that anti-symmetric products of multipole operators have finite expectation values, indicating the existence of DM interactions for multipoles. We also find that the spin-orbit coupling dependences of DM interactions for multipoles are significantly different depending on the lattice structure. Finally, we discuss the numerical results for small and large spin-orbit coupling region by using perturbative analysis.

Flat bands and higher-order topology in polymerized triptycene: Tight-binding analysis on decorated star lattices

In a class of carbon-based materials called polymerized triptycene, which consist of triptycene molecules and phenyls, exotic electronic structures such as Dirac cones and flat bands arise from the kagome-type network. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the tight-binding models for polymerized triptycene, focusing on the origin of flat bands and the topological properties. The mechanism of the existence of the flat bands is elucidated by using the "molecular-orbital" representation, which we have developed in the prior works. Further, we propose that the present material is a promising candidate to realize the two-dimensional second-order topological insulator, which is characterized by the boundary states localized at the corners of the sample. To be concrete, we propose two methods to realize the second-order topological insulator, and elucidate the topological properties of the corresponding models by calculating the corner states as well as the bulk topological invariant, namely the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Berry phase.

Trimer classical spin liquid from interacting fractional charges

We study a problem of interacting fractional charges with $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ Ising model on a checkerboard lattice under magnetic field. As a result of the interplay between repulsive interactions and particle density tuning by magnetic field, the fractional charges form a classical spin liquid (CSL) phase. The CSL phase is composed of degenerate spin configurations, which can be mapped to the trimer covering of dual square lattice. The CSL state shows macroscopic ground-state entropy, implying the emergence of novel quantum spin liquid phase when quantum fluctuations are turned on. In addition to the CSL phase, the system exhibits multiple magnetization plateaus, reflecting the fertile screening processes of dimer-monomer mixtures.

$\mathbb{Z}_Q$ Berry Phase for Higher-Order Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases

We propose the $\mathbb{Z}_Q$ Berry phase as a topological invariant for higher-order symmetry-protected topological (HOSPT) phases for two- and three-dimensional systems. It is topologically stable for electron-electron interactions assuming the gap remains open. As a concrete example, we show that the Berry phase is quantized in $\mathbb{Z}_4$ and characterizes the HOSPT phase of the extended Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes (BBH) model, which contains the next-nearest neighbor hopping and the intersite Coulomb interactions. In addition, we introduce the $\mathbb{Z}_4$ Berry phase for the spin-model-analog of the BBH model, whose topological invariant has not been found so far. Furthermore, we demonstrate the Berry phase is quantized in $\mathbb{Z}_4$ for the three-dimensional version of the BBH model. We also confirm the bulk-corner correspondence between the $\mathbb{Z}_4$ Berry phase and the corner states in the HOSPT phases.

Molecular-orbital representation of generic flat-band models

We develop a framework to describe a wide class of flat-band models, with and without a translational symmetry, by using "molecular orbitals" introduced in the prior work (HATSUGAI Y. and MARUYAMA I., \textit{EPL}, \textbf{95}, (2011) 20003). Using the molecular-orbital representation, we shed new light on the band-touching problem between flat and dispersive bands. We show that the band touching occurs as a result of collapse, or the linearly dependent nature, of molecular orbitals. Conversely, we can gap out the flat bands by modulating the molecular orbitals so that they do not collapse, which provides a simple prescription to construct models having a finite energy gap between flat bands and dispersive bands.

Higher-Order Topological Phase in a Honeycomb-Lattice Model with Anti-Kekulé Distortion

Higher-order topological insulators have attracted considerable interests as a novel topological phase of matter, where topologically non-trivial nature of bulk protects boundary states whose co-dimension is larger than one. It has been revealed that the alternating pattern of hopping amplitudes in two-dimensional lattices provides a promising route to realization of the higher-order topological insulators. In this paper, we propose that a honeycomb-lattice model with anti-Kekulé distortion hosts a higher-order topological phase. Here, the term anti-Kekulé distortion means that the pattern of strong and weak hoppings is opposite to that for the conventional Kekulé distortion. We demonstrate the existence of the higher-order topological phase by calculating the $\mathbb{Z}_6$ Berry phase that serves as a bulk topological invariant of the higher-order topological phase, and by showing the existence of corner states.

Sequential quantum phase transitions in $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg chains with integer spins ($S > 1$): Quantized Berry phase and valence-bond solids

On the basis of a Berry-phase analysis, we study the ground state of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg chain for $S=2,3,4$. We find that changes of the Berry phase occur $S$ times for spin-$S$ systems, indicating the sequential phase transitions. The sequential phase transitions are associated with the change of valence-bond configurations of the ground states. To demonstrate this numerically, we connect the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg Hamiltonian with the generalized Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model, and show that the different phases are connected to the different valence-bond-solid states.

Flat-band engineering in tight-binding models: Beyond the nearest-neighbor hopping

In typical flat-band models, defined as nearest-neighbor tight-binding models, flat bands are usually pinned to the special energies, such as top or bottom of dispersive bands, or band-crossing points. In this paper, we propose a simple method to tune the energy of flat bands without losing the exact flatness of the bands. The main idea is to add farther-neighbor hoppings to the original nearest-neighbor models, in such a way that the transfer integral depends only on the Manhattan distance. We apply this method to several lattice models including the two-dimensional kagome lattice and the three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice, as well as their breathing lattices and non-line graphs. The proposed method will be useful for engineering flat bands to generate desirable properties, such as enhancement of $T_c$ of superconductors and nontrivial topological orders.

Majorana edge magnetization in the Kitaev honeycomb model

We propose an approach to detect the peculiarity of Majorana fermions at the edges of Kitaev magnets. As is well known, a pair of Majorana edge modes is realized when a single complex fermion splits into real and imaginary parts which are, respectively, localized at the left and right edges of a sample magnet. Reflecting both of this peculiarity of the Majorana fermions and the ground-state degeneracy caused by the existence of the Majorana edge zero modes, the spins at the edges of the sample magnet are expected to behave as a peculiar "free" spin which exhibits a unidirectional magnetization without any transverse magnetization when applied a sufficiently weak external magnetic field. For the Kitaev honeycomb model, we obtain the expression of the Majorana edge magnetization by relying on standard techniques to diagonalize a free fermion Hamiltonian. The magnetization profile thus obtained indeed shows the expected behavior. We also elucidate the relation between the Majorana edge flat band and the bulk winding number from a weak topological point of view.

Symmetry-protected topological magnons in three dimensional Kitaev materials

Topological phases in magnetic materials offer novel tunability of topological properties via varying the underlying magnetism. We show that three dimensional Kitaev materials can provide a great opportunity for controlling symmetry-protected topological nodal magnons. These materials are originally considered as strong candidates for the Kitaev quantum spin liquid due to the bond-dependent frustrating spin exchange interactions. As a concrete example, we consider the symmetry and topology of the magnons in the canted zig-zag ordered state in the hyperhoneycomb $β\text{-}\mathrm{Li_2IrO_3}$, which can be obtained by applying a magnetic field in the counter-rotating spiral state at zero field. It is shown that the magnetic glide symmetries and the non-Hermitian nature of the bosonic magnons lead to unique topological protection that is different from the case of the fermionic counterparts. We investigate how such topological magnons can be controlled by changing the symmetry of the underlying spin exchange interactions.

Phase diagram of disordered higher-order topological insulator: A machine learning study

A higher-order topological insulator is a new concept of topological states of matter, which is characterized by the emergent boundary states whose dimensionality is lower by more than two compared with that of the bulk, and draws a considerable interest. Yet, its robustness against disorders is still unclear. Here we investigate a phase diagram of higher-order topological insulator phases in a breathing kagome model in the presence of disorders, by using a state-of-the-art machine learning technique. We find that the corner states survive against the finite strength of disorder potential as long as the energy gap is not closed, indicating the stability of the higher-order topological phases against the disorders.

Magnetic clustering, half-moons, and shadow pinch points as signals of a proximate Coulomb phase in frustrated Heisenberg magnets

We study the formation of magnetic clusters in frustrated magnets in their cooperative paramagnetic regime. For this purpose, we consider the $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ classical Heisenberg model on kagome and pyrochlore lattices with $J_2 = J_3=J$. In the absence of farther-neighbor couplings, $J=0$, the system is in the Coulomb phase with magnetic correlations well characterized by pinch-point singularities. Farther-neighbor couplings lead to the formation of magnetic clusters, which can be interpreted as a counterpart of topological-charge clusters in Ising frustrated magnets [T. Mizoguchi, L. D. C. Jaubert and M. Udagawa, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 119}, 077207 (2017)]. The concomitant static and dynamical magnetic structure factors, respectively $\mathcal{S}({\bm{q}})$ and $\mathcal{S}({\bm{q}},ω)$, develop half-moon patterns. As $J$ increases, the continuous nature of the Heisenberg spins enables the half-moons to coalesce into connected `star' structures spreading across multiple Brillouin zones. These characteristic patterns are a dispersive complement of the pinch point singularities, and signal the proximity to a Coulomb phase. Shadows of the pinch points remain visible at finite energy, $ω$. This opens the way to observe these clusters through (in)elastic neutron scattering experiments. The origin of these features are clarified by complementary methods: large-$N$ calculations, semi-classical dynamics of the Landau-Lifshitz equation, and Monte Carlo simulations. As promising candidates to observe the clustering states, we revisit the origin of "spin molecules" observed in a family of spinel oxides $AB_2$O$_4$ ($A=$ Zn, Hg, Mg, $B=$ Cr, Fe).

Clustering of Topological Charges in a Kagome Classical Spin Liquid

Fractionalization is a ubiquitous phenomenon in topological states of matter. In this work, we study the collective behavior of fractionalized topological charges and their instabilities, through the $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ Ising model on a kagome lattice, which can be mapped to a model of interacting topological charges under the constraint of Gauss' law. We find that the recombination of topological charges gives rise to a yet unexplored classical spin liquid. This spin liquid is characterized by an extensive residual entropy, as well as the formation of hexamers of same-sign topological charges. The emergence of hexamers is reflected to a half-moon signal in the magnetic structure factor, which provides us a signature of this new spin liquid in neutron-scattering experiments. To study this phase, a worm algorithm has been developed which does not require the usual divergence-free condition.

Quantum spin liquid and magnetic order in a two-dimensional non-symmorphic lattice: considering the distorted Kagome lattice of Volborthite

The Kagome-lattice-based material, Volborthite, $\mathrm{Cu_3 V_2 O_7 (OH)_2 \cdot 2 H_2 O}$, has been considered as a promising platform for discovery of unusual quantum ground states due to the frustrated nature of spin interactions. Here we explore possible quantum spin liquid and magnetically ordered phases in a two-dimensional non-symmorphic lattice described by $p2gg$ layer space group, which is consistent with the spatial anisotropy of the spin model derived from density functional theory (DFT) for Volborthite. Using the projective symmetry group (PSG) analysis and Schwinger boson mean field theory, we classify possible spin liquid phases with bosonic spinons and investigate magnetically ordered phases connected to such states. It is shown, in general, that only translationally invariant mean field states are allowed in two-dimensional non-symmorphic lattices, which simplifies the classification considerably. The mean field phase diagram of the DFT-derived spin model is studied and it is found that possible quantum spin liquid phases are connected to two types of magnetically ordered phases, a coplanar incommensurate $(q,0)$ spiral order as the ground state and a closely competing coplanar commensurate $(π,π)$ spin density wave order. In addition, periodicity enhancement of the two-spinon continuum, a signature of symmetry fractionalization, is found in the spin liquid phases connected to the $(π,π)$ spin density wave order. We discuss relevance of these results to recent and future experiments on Volborthite.

Generic model for hyperkagome iridate in the local moment regime

Hyperkagome iridate, Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$, has been regarded as a promising candidate material for a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid. Here the three-dimensional network of corner-sharing triangles forms the hyperkagome lattice of Ir$^{4+}$ ions. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling, the local moments of Ir$^{4+}$ ions are described by the pseudospin $j_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ Kramers doublet. The Heisenberg model on this lattice is highly frustrated and quantum/classical versions have been studied in earlier literature. In this work, we derive a generic local-moment model beyond the Heisenberg limit for the hyperkagome iridate by considering multi-orbital interactions for all the $t_{2g}$ orbitals and spin-orbit coupling. The lifting of massive classical degeneracy in the Heisenberg model by various spin-anisotropy terms is investigated at the classical level and the resulting phase diagram is presented. We find that different anisotropy terms prefer distinct classes of magnetically ordered phases, often with various discrete degeneracy. The implications of our results for recent $μ$SR and NMR experiments on this material and possible quantum spin liquid phases are discussed.

Controlling spin Hall effect by using a band anticrossing and nonmagnetic impurity scattering

The spin Hall effect (SHE) is one of the promising phenomena to utilize a spin current as spintronics devices, and the theoretical understanding of its microscopic mechanism is essential to know how to control its response. Although the SHE in multiorbital systems without inversion symmetry (IS) is expected to show several characteristic properties due to the cooperative roles of orbital degrees of freedom and a lack of IS, a theoretical understanding of the cooperative roles has been lacking. To clarify the cooperative roles, we study the spin Hall conductivity (SHC) derived by the linear-response theory for a $t_{2g}$-orbital tight-binding model of the $[001]$ surface or interface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ in the presence of dilute nonmagnetic impurities. We find that the band anticrossing, arising from a combination of orbital degrees of freedom and a lack of IS, causes an increase of magnitude and a sign change of the SHC at some nonmagnetic impurity concentrations. Since a similar mechanism for controlling the magnitude and sign of the response of Hall effects works in other multiorbital systems without IS, our mechanism provides an ubiquitous method to control the magnitude and sign of the response of Hall effects in some multiorbital systems by introducing IS breaking and tuning of the nonmagnetic impurity concentration.
