How fake news can turn against its spreader

When different information sources on a given topic are combined, they interact in a nontrivial manner for a rational receiver of these information sources. Suppose that there are two information sources, one is genuine and the other contains disinformation. It is shown that under the conditions that the signal-to-noise ratio of the genuine information source is sufficiently large, and that the noise terms in the two information sources are positively correlated, the effect of disinformation is reversed from its original intent. That is, the effect of disinformation on a receiver of both information sources, who is unaware of the existence of disinformation, is to generate an opposite interpretation. While the condition in which this phenomenon occurs cannot always be ensured, when it is satisfied, the effect provides an effective way of countering the impacts of disinformation.

Three candidate election strategy

The probability of a given candidate winning a future election is worked out in closed form as a function of (i) the current support rates for each candidate, (ii) the relative positioning of the candidates within the political spectrum, (iii) the time left to the election, and (iv) the rate at which noisy information is revealed to the electorate from now to the election day, when there are three or more candidates. It is shown, in particular, that the optimal strategy for controlling information can be intricate and nontrivial, in contrast to a two-candidate race. A surprising finding is that for a candidate taking the centre ground in an electoral competition among a polarised electorate, certain strategies are fatal in that the resulting winning probability for that candidate vanishes identically.

Semi-implicit Euler--Maruyama scheme for polynomial diffusions on the unit ball

In this article, we consider numerical schemes for polynomial diffusions on the unit ball, which are solutions of stochastic differential equations with a diffusion coefficient of the form $\sqrt{1-|x|^{2}}$. We introduce a semi-implicit Euler--Maruyama scheme with the projection onto the unit ball and provide the $L^{2}$-rate of convergence. The main idea to consider the numerical scheme is the transformation argument introduced by Swart for proving the pathwise uniqueness for some stochastic differential equation with a non-Lipschitz diffusion coefficient.

Higher-order error estimates of the discrete-time Clark--Ocone formula

In this article, we investigate the convergence rate of the discrete-time Clark--Ocone formula provided by Akahori--Amaba--Okuma [1]. In that paper, they mainly focus on the $L_{2}$-convergence rate of the first-order error estimate related to the tracking error of the delta hedge in mathematical finance. Here, as two extensions, we estimate "the higher order error" for Wiener functionals with an integrability index $2$ and "an arbitrary differentiability index."

$L^{q}$-error estimates for approximation of irregular functionals of random vectors

Avikainen showed that, for any $p,q \in [1,\infty)$, and any function $f$ of bounded variation in $\mathbb{R}$, it holds that $\mathbb{E}[|f(X)-f(\widehat{X})|^{q}] \leq C(p,q) \mathbb{E}[|X-\widehat{X}|^{p}]^{\frac{1}{p+1}}$, where $X$ is a one-dimensional random variable with a bounded density, and $\widehat{X}$ is an arbitrary random variable. In this article, we will provide multi-dimensional versions of this estimate for functions of bounded variation in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, Orlicz--Sobolev spaces, Sobolev spaces with variable exponents, and fractional Sobolev spaces. The main idea of our arguments is to use the Hardy--Littlewood maximal estimates and pointwise characterizations of these function spaces. We apply our main results to analyze the numerical approximation for some irregular functionals of the solution of stochastic differential equations.

An efficient weak Euler-Maruyama type approximation scheme of very high dimensional SDEs by orthogonal random variables

We will introduce Euler-Maruyama approximations given by an orthogonal system in $L^{2}[0,1]$ for high dimensional SDEs, which could be finite dimensional approximations of SPDEs. In general, the higher the dimension is, the more one needs to generate uniform random numbers at every time step in numerical simulation. The schemes proposed in this paper, in contrast, can deal with this problem by generating very few uniform random numbers at every time step. The schemes save time in the simulation of very high dimensional SDEs. In particular, we conclude that an Euler-Maruyama approximation based on the Walsh system is efficient in high dimensions.
