Phase transition of clock models on hyperbolic lattice studied by corner transfer matrix renormalization group method

Two-dimensional ferromagnetic N-state clock models are studied on a hyperbolic lattice represented by tessellation of pentagons. The lattice lies on the hyperbolic plane with a constant negative scalar curvature. We observe the spontaneous magnetization, the internal energy, and the specific heat at the center of sufficiently large systems, where the fixed boundary conditions are imposed, for the cases N>=3 up to N=30. The model with N=3, which is equivalent to the 3-state Potts model on the hyperbolic lattice, exhibits the first order phase transition. A mean-field like phase transition of the second order is observed for the cases N>=4. When N>=5 we observe the Schottky type specific heat below the transition temperature, where its peak hight at low temperatures scales as N^{-2}. From these facts we conclude that the phase transition of classical XY-model deep inside the hyperbolic lattices is not of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type.

Ising model on hyperbolic lattice studied by corner transfer matrix renormalization group method

We study two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model on a series of regular lattices, which are represented as the tessellation of polygons with p>=5 sides, such as pentagons (p=5), hexagons (p=6), etc. Such lattices are on hyperbolic planes, which have constant negative scalar curvatures. We calculate critical temperatures and scaling exponents by use of the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method. As a result, the mean-field like phase transition is observed for all the cases p>=5. Convergence of the calculated transition temperatures with respect to p is investigated towards the limit p->infinity, where the system coincides with the Ising model on the Bethe lattice.

Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group Method Applied to the Ising Model on the Hyperbolic Plane

Critical behavior of the Ising model is investigated at the center of large scale finite size systems, where the lattice is represented as the tiling of pentagons. The system is on the hyperbolic plane, and the recursive structure of the lattice makes it possible to apply the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method. From the calculated nearest neighbor spin correlation function and the spontaneous magnetization, it is concluded that the phase transition of this model is mean-field like. One parameter deformation of the corner Hamiltonian on the hyperbolic plane is discussed.

Least Action Principle for the Real-Time Density Matrix Renormalization Group

A kind of least action principle is introduced for the discrete time evolution of one-dimensional quantum lattice models. Based on this principle, we obtain an optimal condition for the matrix product states on succeeding time slices generated by the real-time density matrix renormalization group method. This optimization can also be applied to classical simulations of quantum circuits. We discuss the time reversal symmetry in the fully optimized MPS.

Modulation of Local Magnetization in two-dimensional Axial-Next-Nearest-Neighbor Ising model

The axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model is studied in two dimensions at finite temperature using the density matrix renormalization group. The model exhibits phase transition of the second-order between the antiphase in low temperature and the modulated phase in high temperature. Observing the domain wall free energy, we confirm that the modulation period in high-temperature side is well explained by the free-fermion picture.

Product Wave Function Renormalization Group: construction from the matrix product point of view

We present a construction of a matrix product state (MPS) that approximates the largest-eigenvalue eigenvector of a transfer matrix T, for the purpose of rapidly performing the infinite system density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method applied to two-dimensional classical lattice models. We use the fact that the largest-eigenvalue eigenvector of T can be approximated by a state vector created from the upper or lower half of a finite size cluster. Decomposition of the obtained state vector into the MPS gives a way of extending the MPS, at the system size increment process in the infinite system DMRG algorithm. As a result, we successfully give the physical interpretation of the product wave function renormalization group (PWFRG) method, and obtain its appropriate initial condition.

Critical Point of a Symmetric Vertex Model

We study a symmetric vertex model, that allows 10 vertex configurations, by use of the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG), a variant of DMRG. The model has a critical point that belongs to the Ising universality class.

Estimation of the magnetic critical exponent by Tensor Product Variational Approach

A variational problem for three-dimensional (3D) classical lattice models is considered with trial state given by two-dimensional (2D) uniform product of local variational weights. This approach, the tensor product variational approach (TPVA), has been applied to 3D classical models (the Ising and the Potts models). We consider a way of estimating the magnetic critical exponent $β$ for the simple 3D Ising model assuming a functional form of the spontaneous magnetization in the off critical region, where the TPVA provides reliable data.

Phase diagram of the 3D Axial-Next-Nearest-Neighbor Ising model

The three-dimensional axial-next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model is studied by a modified tensor product variational approach (TPVA). A global phase diagram is constructed with numerous commensurate and incommensurate magnetic structures. The devil's stairs behavior for the model is confirmed. The wavelength of the spin modulated phases increases to infinity at the boundary with the ferromagnetic phase. Widths of the commensurate phases are considerably narrower than those calculated by mean-field approximations.

Stable Optimization of a Tensor Product Variational State

We consider a variational problem for three-dimensional (3D) classical lattice models. We construct the trial state as a two-dimensional product of local variational weights that contain auxiliary variables. We propose a stable numerical algorithm for the maximization of the variational partition function per layer. The numerical stability and efficiency of the new method are examined through its application to the 3D Ising model.

Latent Heat Calculation of the 3D q=3, 4, and 5 Potts models by Tensor Product Variational Approach

Three-dimensional (3D) $q$-state Potts models ($q$=3, 4, and 5) are studied by the tensor product variational approach (TPVA), which is a recently developed variational method for 3D classical lattice models. The variational state is given by a two-dimensional (2D) product of local factors, and is improved by way of self-consistent calculations assisted by the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG). It should be noted that no a priori condition is imposed for the local factor. Transition temperatures and latent heats are calculated from the observations of thermodynamic functions in both ordered and disordered phases.

Interaction-round-a-face density-matrix renormalization-group method

A brief review of the interaction-round-a-face (IRF) density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method. We have demonstrated the numerical superiority of IRF-DMRG method applied to SU(2) invariant quantum spin chains over the conventional DMRG. The ground state energy densities and the gap energies of both $S = 1$ and $S = 2$ spin chains can be calculated using the IRF-DMRG without extensive computations. We have also studied the effect of tuning boundary interaction $J_{\rm end}^{~}$ at both ends of the chain from the IRF view point. It is clearly observed that the magnon distribution is uniform when the best $J_{\rm end}^{~}$ is chosen.

Vertical Density Matrix Algorithm: A Higher-Dimensional Numerical Renormalization Scheme based on the Tensor Product State Ansatz

We present a new algorithm to calculate the thermodynamic quantities of three-dimensional (3D) classical statistical systems, based on the ideas of the tensor product state and the density matrix renormalization group. We represent the maximum-eigenvalue eigenstate of the transfer matrix as the product of local tensors which are iteratively optimized by the use of the ``vertical density matrix'' formed by cutting the system along the transfer direction. This algorithm, which we call vertical density matrix algorithm (VDMA), is successfully applied to the 3D Ising model. Using the Suzuki-Trotter transformation, we can also apply the VDMA to two-dimensional (2D) quantum systems, which we demonstrate for the 2D transverse field Ising model.

Phase Diagram of a 2D Vertex Model

Phase diagram of a symmetric vertex model which allows 7 vertex configurations is obtained by use of the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG), which is a variant of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). The critical indices of this model are identified as $β= 1/8$ and $α= 0$.

Two-Dimensional Tensor Product Variational Formulation

We propose a numerical self-consistent method for 3D classical lattice models, which optimizes the variational state written as two-dimensional product of tensors. The variational partition function is calculated by the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG), which is a variant of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Numerical efficiency of the method is observed via its application to the 3D Ising model.

Kramers-Wannier Approximation for 3D Ising Model

We investigate the Kramers-Wannier approximation for the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model. The variational state is represented by an effective 2D Ising model, which contains two variational parameters. We numerically calculate the variational partition function using the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) method, and find its maximum with respect to the variational parameters. The calculated transition point $K_{\rm c} = 0.2184$ is only 1.5% less than the true $K_{\rm c}$; the result is better than that obtained by the corner transfer tensor renormalization group (CTTRG) approach. The calculated phase transition is mean-field like.

A Density Matrix Algorithm for 3D Classical Models

We generalize the corner transfer matrix renormalization group, which consists of White's density matrix algorithm and Baxter's method of the corner transfer matrix, to three dimensional (3D) classical models. The renormalization group transformation is obtained through the diagonalization of density matrices for a cubic cluster. A trial application for 3D Ising model with m=2 is shown as the simplest case.

Ground-State and Thermodynamic Properties of the Quantum Mixed Spin-1/2-1/2-1-1 Chain

We investigate both analytically and numerically the ground-state and thermodynamic properties of the quantum mixed spin-1/2-1/2-1-1 chain described by the Hamiltonian $H=\sum_{\ell=1}^{N/4} (J_1\vecs_{4\ell-3}\cdot \vecs_{4\ell-2}+J_2\vecs_{4\ell-2}\cdot\vecS_{4\ell-1}+J_3\vecS_{4\ell-1}\cdot \vecS_{4\ell}+J_2\vecS_{4\ell}\cdot\vecs_{4\ell+1})$, where two $S=1/2$ spins ($\vecs_{4\ell-3}$ and $\vecs_{4\ell-2}$) and two S=1 spins ($\vecS_{4\ell-1}$ and $\vecS_{4\ell}$) are arranged alternatively. Inseveral limiting cases of $J_1$, $J_2$, and $J_3$ we apply the Wigner-Eckart theorem and carry out a perturbation calculation to examine the behavior of the massless lines where the energy gap vanishes. Performing a quantum Monte Carlo calculation without global flips at a sufficiently low temperature for the case where $J_1=J_3=1.0$ and $J_2>0$, we find that the ground state of the present system in this case undergoes a second-order phase transition accompanying the vanishing of the energy gap at $J_2=J_{2c$ with $J_{2 c} = 0.77 \pm 0.01$. We also find that the ground states for both $J_2 < J_{2 c$ and $J_2 > J_{2c$ can be understood by means of the valence-bond-solid picture. A quantum Monte Carlo calculation which takes the global flips along the Trotter direction into account is carried out to elucidate the temperature dependences of the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility. In particular, it is found that the susceptibility per unit cell for $J_2=0.77$ with $J_1=J_3=1.0$ takes a finite value at absolute zero temperature and that the specific heat per unit cell versus temperature curve for $J_2=5.0$ with $J_1=J_3=1.0$ has a double peak.
