Survey Observation of CH$_3$NH$_2$ and Its Formation Process

We present the observational result of a glycine precursor, methylamine (CH$_3$NH$_2$), together with methanol (CH$_3$OH) and methanimine (CH$_2$NH) towards high-mass star-forming regions, NGC6334I, G10.47+0.03, G31.41+0.3, and W51~e1/e2 using ALMA. The molecular abundances toward these sources were derived using the rotational diagram method and compared with our state-of-the-art chemical model. We found that the observed ratio of "CH$_3$NH$_2$/CH$_3$OH" is in between 0.11 and 2.2. We also found that the observed "CH$_3$NH$_2$/CH$_3$OH" ratio agrees well with our chemical model by considering the formation of CH$_3$NH$_2$ on the grain surface via hydrogenation process to HCN. This result clearly shows the importance of hydrogenation processes to form CH$_3$NH$_2$. NGC63343I MM3, where CH$_3$NH$_2$ was not detected in this study and showed "CH$_3$NH$_2$/CH$_3$OH" ratio of less than 0.02, is clearly distinguished from the other cores.

Sulfur-Bearing Species Tracing the Disk/Envelope System in the Class I Protostellar Source Elias 29

We have observed the Class I protostellar source Elias 29 with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We have detected CS, SO, $^{34}$SO, SO$_2$, and SiO line emissions in a compact component concentrated near the protostar and a ridge component separated from the protostar by 4\arcsec\ ($\sim 500$ au). The former component is found to be abundant in SO and SO$_2$ but deficient in CS. The abundance ratio SO/CS is as high as $3^{+13}_{-2} \times 10^2$ at the protostar, which is even higher than that in the outflow-shocked region of L1157 B1. However, organic molecules (HCOOCH$_3$, CH$_3$OCH$_3$, CCH, and c-C$_3$H$_2$) are deficient in Elias 29. We attribute the deficiency in organic molecules and richness in SO and SO$_2$ to the evolved nature of the source or the relatively high dust temperature (\protect\raisebox{-0.7ex}{$\:\stackrel{\textstyle >}{\sim}\:$} 20 K) in the parent cloud of Elias 29. The SO and SO$_2$ emissions trace rotation around the protostar. Assuming a highly inclined configuration ($i \geq 65$\degr; 0\degr\ for a face-on configuration) and Keplerian motion for simplicity, the protostellar mass is estimated to be (0.8 -- 1.0) \Msun. The $^{34}$SO and SO$_2$ emissions are asymmetric in their spectra; the blue-shifted components are weaker than the red-shifted ones. Although this may be attributed to the asymmetric molecular distribution, other possibilities are also discussed.

The first bird's-eye view of a gravitationally unstable accretion disk in high-mass star formation

We report on the first bird's-eye view of the innermost accretion disk around the high-mass protostellar object G353.273+0.641, taken by Atacama Large Millimter/submillimeter Array long-baselines. The disk traced by dust continuum emission has a radius of 250 au, surrounded by the infalling rotating envelope traced by thermal CH$_3$OH lines. This disk radius is consistent with the centrifugal radius estimated from the specific angular momentum in the envelope. The lower-limit envelope mass is $\sim$5-7 M$_{\odot}$ and accretion rate onto the stellar surface is 3 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ or higher. The expected stellar age is well younger than 10$^{4}$ yr, indicating that the host object is one of the youngest high-mass objects at present. The disk mass is 2-7 M$_{\odot}$, depending on the dust opacity index. The estimated Toomre's $Q$ parameter is typically 1-2 and can reach 0.4 at the minimum. These $Q$ values clearly satisfy the classical criteria for the gravitational instability, and are consistent with the recent numerical studies. Observed asymmetric and clumpy structures could trace a spiral arm and/or disk fragmentation. We found that 70$\%$ of the angular momentum in the accretion flow could be removed via the gravitational torque in the disk. Our study has indicated that the dynamical nature of a self-gravitating disk could dominate the early phase of high-mass star formation. This is remarkably consistent with the early evolutionary scenario of a low-mass protostar.

Understanding Accretion Outbursts in Massive Protostars through Maser Imaging

The bright maser emission produced by several molecular species at centimeter to long millimeter wavelengths provides an essential tool for understanding the process of massive star formation. Unimpeded by the high dust optical depths that affect shorter wavelength observations, the high brightness temperature of these emission lines offers a way to resolve accretion and outflow motions down to scales below $\sim$1 au in deeply embedded Galactic star-forming regions at kiloparsec distances. The recent identification of extraordinary accretion outbursts in two high-mass protostars, both of which were heralded by maser flares, has rapidly impacted the traditional view of massive protostellar evolution, leading to new hydrodynamic simulations that can produce such episodic outbursts. In order to understand how these massive protostars evolve in response to such events, larger, more sensitive ground-based centimeter wavelength interferometers are needed that can simultaneously image multiple maser species in the molecular gas along with faint continuum from the central ionized gas. Fiducial observations of a large sample of massive protostars will be essential in order to pinpoint the progenitors of future accretion outbursts, and to quantify the outburst-induced changes in their protostellar photospheres and outflow and accretion structures. Knowledge gained from these studies will have broader impact on the general topic of accretion onto massive objects.

Dust continuum emission and the upper limit fluxes of sub-millimeter water lines of the protoplanetary disk around HD 163296 observed by ALMA

In this paper, we analyse the upper limit fluxes of sub-millimeter ortho-H$_{2}$$^{16}$O 321 GHz, para-H$_{2}$$^{18}$O 322 GHz, and HDO 335 GHz lines from the protoplanetary disk around the Herbig Ae star HD 163296, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). These water lines are considered to be the best candidate sub-millimeter lines to locate the position of the H$_{2}$O snowline, on the basis of our previous model calculations. We compare the upper limit fluxes with the values calculated by our models with dust emission included, and we constrain the line emitting region and the dust opacity from the observations. We conclude that, if the outer edge of the region with high water vapor abundance and if the position of the water snowline are beyond 8 au also, the mm dust opacity will have a value larger than 2.0 cm$^{2}$ g$^{-1}$. In addition, the position of the water snowline will be inside 20 au, if the mm dust opacity is 2.0 cm$^{2}$ g$^{-1}$. Future observations of the dust continuum emission at higher angular resolution and sub-millimeter water lines with longer observation time are required to clarify the detailed structures and the position of the H$_{2}$O snowline in the disk midplane.

Extremely high excitation SiO lines in disk-outflow system in Orion Source I

We present high-resolution images of the submillimeter SiO line emissions of a massive young stellar object Orion Source I using the Atacama Large Millimeter/ Submillimeter Array (ALMA) at band 8. We detected the 464 GHz SiO v=4 J=11-10 line in Source I, which is the first detection of the SiO v=4 line in star-forming regions, together with the 465 GHz 29SiO v=2 J=11-10 and the 428 GHz SiO v=2 J=10-9 lines with a resolution of 50 AU. The 29SiO v=2 J=11-10 and SiO v=4 J=11-10 lines have compact structures with the diameter of <80 AU. The spatial and velocity distribution suggest that the line emissions are associated with the base of the outflow and the surface of the edge-on disk. In contrast, SiO v=2 J=10-9 emission shows a bipolar structure in the direction of northeast-southwest low-velocity outflow with ~200 AU scale. The emission line exhibits a velocity gradient along the direction of the disk elongation. With the assumption of the ring structure with Keplerian rotation, we estimated the lower limit of the central mass to be 7 solar mass and the radius of 12 AU< r <26 AU.

Multi-epoch VLBI of a double maser super burst

In a rare and spectacular display, two well-known massive star forming regions, W49N and G25.65+1.05, recently underwent maser 'super burst' - their fluxes suddenly increasing above 30,000 and 18,000 Jy, respectively, reaching several orders of magnitude above their usual values. In quick-response, ToO observations with the EVN, VLBA and KaVA were obtained constituting a 4 week campaign - producing a high-cadence multi-epoch VLBI investigation of the maser emission. The combination of high-resolution, polarisation and flux monitoring during the burst provides one of the best accounts, to date, of the maser super burst phenomenon, aiding their use as astrophysical tools. These proceedings contain the preliminary results of our campaign.

Compressed magnetic field in the magnetically-regulated global collapsing clump of G9.62+0.19

How stellar feedback from high-mass stars (e.g., H{\sc ii} regions) influences the surrounding interstellar medium and regulates new star formation is still unclear. To address this question, we observed the G9.62+0.19 complex in 850 $μ$m continuum with the JCMT/POL-2 polarimeter. An ordered magnetic field has been discovered in its youngest clump, the G9.62 clump. The magnetic field strength is determined to be $\sim$1 mG. Magnetic field plays a larger role than turbulence in supporting the clump. However, the G9.62 clump is still unstable against gravitational collapse even if thermal, turbulent, and magnetic field support are taken into account all together. The magnetic field segments in the outskirts of the G9.62 clump seem to point toward the clump center, resembling a dragged-in morphology, indicating that the clump is likely undergoing magnetically-regulated global collapse. However, The magnetic field in its central region is aligned with the shells of the photodissociation regions (PDRs) and is approximately parallel to the ionization (or shock) front, indicating that the magnetic field therein is likely compressed by the expanding H{\sc ii} regions that formed in the same complex.

Science with an ngVLA: Understanding Massive Star Formation through Maser Imaging

Imaging the bright maser emission produced by several molecular species at centimeter wavelengths is an essential tool for understanding the process of massive star formation because it provides a way to probe the kinematics of dense molecular gas at high angular resolution. Unimpeded by the high dust optical depths that affect shorter wavelength observations, the high brightness temperature of these emission lines offers a way to resolve accretion and outflow motions down to scales as fine as $\sim$1-10 au in deeply embedded Galactic star-forming regions, and at sub-pc scales in nearby galaxies. The Next Generation Very Large Array will provide the capabilities needed to fully exploit these powerful tracers.

Chemical Diversity in Three Massive Young Stellar Objects associated with 6.7 GHz CH$_{3}$OH Masers

We have carried out observations in the 42$-$46 and 82$-$103 GHz bands with the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope, and in the 338.2$-$339.2 and 348.45$-$349.45 GHz bands with the ASTE 10-m telescope toward three high-mass star-forming regions containing massive young stellar objects (MYSOs), G12.89+0.49, G16.86$-$2.16, and G28.28$-$0.36. We have detected HC$_{3}$N including its $^{13}$C and D isotopologues, CH$_{3}$OH, CH$_{3}$CCH, and several complex organic molecules (COMs). Combining our previous results of HC$_{5}$N in these sources, we compare the $N$(HC$_{5}$N)/$N$(CH$_{3}$OH) ratios in the three observed sources. The ratio in G28.28$-$0.36 is derived to be $0.091^{+0.109}_{-0.039}$, which is higher than that in G12.89+0.49 by one order of magnitude, and that in G16.86$-$2.16 by a factor of $\sim 5$. We investigate the relationship between the $N$(HC$_{5}$N)/$N$(CH$_{3}$OH) ratio and the $N$(CH$_{3}$CCH)/$N$(CH$_{3}$OH) ratio. The relationships of the two column density ratios in G28.28$-$0.36 and G16.86$-$2.16 are similar to each other, while HC$_{5}$N is less abundant when compared to CH$_{3}$CCH in G12.89+0.49. These results imply a chemical diversity in the lukewarm ($T \sim 20-30$ K) envelope around MYSOs. Besides, several spectral lines from complex organic molecules, including very-high-excitation energy lines, have been detected toward G12.89+0.49, while the line density is significantly low in G28.28$-$0.36. These results suggest that organic-poor MYSOs are surrounded by a carbon-chain-rich lukewarm envelope (G28.28$-$0.36), while organic-rich MYSOs, namely hot cores, are surrounded by a CH$_{3}$OH-rich lukewarm envelope (G12.89+0.49 and G16.86$-$2.16).

An Expanded Gas-Grain Model for Interstellar Glycine

The study of the chemical evolution of glycine in the interstellar medium is one of challenging topics in astrochemistry. Here, we present the chemical modeling of glycine in hot cores using the state-of-the-art three-phase chemical model NAUTILUS, which is focused on the latest glycine chemistry. For the formation process of glycine on the grain surface, we obtained consistent results with previous studies that glycine would be formed via the reactions of COOH with CH$_2$NH$_2$. However, we will report three important findings regarding the chemical evolution and the detectability of interstellar glycine. First, with the experimentally obtained binding energy from the temperature programmed thermal desorption (TPD) experiment, a large proportion of glycine was destroyed through the grain surface reactions with NH or CH$_3$O radicals before it fully evaporates. As a result, the formation process in the gas phase is more important than thermal evaporation from grains. If this is the case, NH$_2$OH and CH$_3$COOH rather than CH$_3$NH$_2$ and CH$_2$NH would be the essential precursors to the gas phase glycine. Secondly, since the gas phase glycine will be quickly destroyed by positive ions or radicals, early evolutionary phase of the hot cores would be the preferable target for the future glycine surveys. Thirdly, we suggest the possibility that the suprathermal hydrogen atoms can strongly accelerate the formation of COOH radicals from CO$_2$, resulting in the dramatic increase of formation rate of glycine on grains. The efficiency of this process should be investigated in detail by theoretical and experimental studies in the future.

Recent progress in high-mass star-formation studies with ALMA

Formation processes of high-mass stars have been long-standing issues in astronomy and astrophysics. This is mainly because of major difficulties in observational studies such as a smaller number of high-mass young stellar objects (YSOs), larger distances, and more complex structures in young high-mass clusters compared with nearby low-mass isolated star-forming regions (SFRs), and extremely large opacity of interstellar dust except for centimeter to submillimeter wavelengths. High resolution and high sensitivity observations with Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) at millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths will overcome these observational difficulties even for statistical studies with increasing number of high-mass YSO samples. This review will summarize recent progresses in high-mass star-formation studies with ALMA such as clumps and filaments in giant molecular cloud complexes and infrared dark clouds (IRDCs), protostellar disks and outflows in dense cores, chemistry, masers, and accretion bursts in high-mass SFRs.

The Difference in Abundances between N-bearing and O-bearing Species in High-Mass Star-Forming Regions

The different spatial distributions of N-bearing and O-bearing species, as is well known towards Orion~KL, is one of the long-lasting mysteries. We conducted a survey observation and chemical modeling study to investigate if the different distributions of O- and N-bearing species are widely recognized in general star-forming regions. First, we report our observational results of complex organic molecules (COMs) with the 45~m radio telescope at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory towards eight star-forming regions. Through our spectral survey ranging from 80 to 108~GHz, we detected CH$_3$OH, HCOOCH$_3$, CH$_3$OCH$_3$, (CH$_3$)$_2$CO, CH$_3$CHO, CH$_3$CH$_2$CN, CH$_2$CHCN, and NH$_2$CHO. Their molecular abundances were derived via the rotation diagram and the least squares methods. We found that N-bearing molecules, tend to show stronger correlations with other N-bearing molecules rather than O-bearing molecules. While G10.47+0.03 showed high fractional abundances of N-bearing species, those in NGC6334F were not so rich, being less than 0.01 compared to CH$_3$OH. Then, the molecular abundances towards these sources were evaluated by chemical modeling with NAUTILUS three-phase gas-grain chemical code. Through the simulations of time evolutions for the abundances of COMs, we suggest that observed correlations of fractional abundances between COMs can be explained by the combination of the different temperature structures inside the hot cores and the different evolutionary phase. Since our modeling could not fully explain the observed excitation temperatures, it is important to investigate the efficiency of grain surface reactions and their activation barriers, and the binding energy of COMs to further promote our understanding.

Candidate Water Vapor Lines to Locate the $\mathrm{H_2O}$ Snowline through High-dispersion Spectroscopic Observations. III. Submillimeter $\mathrm{H_2}$$^{16}\mathrm{O}$ and $\mathrm{H_2}$$^{18}\mathrm{O}$ Lines

In this paper, we extend the results presented in our former papers (Notsu et al. 2016, 2017) on using ortho-$\mathrm{H_2}$$^{16}\mathrm{O}$ line profiles to constrain the location of the $\mathrm{H_2O}$ snowline in T Tauri and Herbig Ae disks, to include sub-millimeter para-$\mathrm{H_2}$$^{16}\mathrm{O}$ and ortho- and para-$\mathrm{H_2}$$^{18}\mathrm{O}$ lines. Since the number densities of the ortho- and para-H$_{2}$$^{18}$O molecules are about 560 times smaller than their $^{16}$O analogues, they trace deeper into the disk than the ortho-H$_{2}$$^{16}$O lines (down to $z=0$, i.e., the midplane). Thus these H$_{2}$$^{18}$O lines are potentially better probes of the position of the H$_{2}$O snowline at the disk midplane, depending on the dust optical depth. The values of the Einstein $A$ coefficients of sub-millimeter candidate water lines tend to be lower (typically $<$$10^{-4}$ s$^{-1}$) than infrared candidate water lines (Notsu et al. 2017). Thus in the sub-millimeter candidate water line cases, the local intensity from the outer optically thin region in the disk is around $10^{4}$ times smaller than that in the infrared candidate water line cases. Therefore, in the sub-millimeter lines, especially H$_{2}$$^{18}$O and para-H$_{2}$$^{16}$O lines with relatively lower upper state energies ($\sim$ a few 100K) can also locate the position of the $\mathrm{H_2O}$ snowline. We also investigate the possibility of future observations with ALMA to identify the position of the water snowline. There are several candidate water lines that trace the hot water vapor inside the $\mathrm{H_2O}$ snowline in ALMA Bands $5-10$.

Chemical survey toward young stellar objects in the Perseus molecular cloud complex

Chemical diversity of the gas in low-mass protostellar cores is widely recognized. In order to explore its origin, a survey of chemical composition toward 36 Class 0/I protostars in the Perseus molecular cloud complex, which are selected in an unbiased way under certain physical conditions, has been conducted with IRAM 30 m and NRO 45 m telescope. Multiple lines of C2H, c-C3H2 and CH3OH have been observed to characterize the chemical composition averaged over a 1000 au scale around the protostar. The derived beam-averaged column densities show significant chemical diversity among the sources, where the column density ratios of C2H/CH3OH are spread out by 2 orders of magnitude. From previous studies, the hot corino sources have abundant CH3OH but deficient C2H, their C2H/CH3OH column density ratios being relatively low. In contrast, the warm-carbon-chain chemistry (WCCC) sources are found to reveal the high C2H/CH3OH column density ratios. We find that the majority of the sources have intermediate characters between these two distinct chemistry types. A possible trend is seen between the C2H/CH3OH ratio and the distance of the source from the edge of a molecular cloud. The sources located near cloud edges or in isolated clouds tend to have a high C2H/CH3OH ratio. On the other hand, the sources having a low C2H/CH3OH ratio tend to be located in inner regions of the molecular cloud complex. This result gives an important clue to an understanding of the origin of the chemical diversity of protostellar cores in terms of environmental effects.

ALMA Observations of the IRDC Clump G34.43+00.24 MM3: Complex Organic and Deuterated Molecules

We have observed complex organic molecules (COMs) and deuterated species toward a hot core/corino (HC) associated with the infrared dark cloud (IRDC) clump G34.43+00.24 MM3 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We have detected six normal-COMs (CH3OH, CH3CHO, CH3CH2CN, CH3OCH3, HCOOCH3, and NH2CHO), one deuterated-COM (CH2DCN), and two deuterated fundamental molecules (D2CO and DNC) toward G34.43+00.24 MM3 HC. None of these lines, except for CH3OH, are detected toward the shocked regions in our data, which suggests that COMs do not originate in shocks. The abundance of the COMs relative to CH3OH in G34.43+00.24 MM3 HC is found to be similar to those in high-mass hot cores, rather than those in hot corinos in low-mass star-forming regions. This result suggests that the physical conditions of the warm-up phase of G34.43+00.24 MM3 HC are similar to those of high-mass sources. On the other hand, the D2CO abundance relative to CH$_3$OH in G34.43+00.24 MM3 HC is higher than that of other hot cores, and seems to be comparable to that of hot corinos. The relatively high D2CO/CH3OH ratio of G34.43+00.24 MM3 HC implies a long cold starless phase of G34.43+00.24 MM3 HC.

Gravitationally unstable condensations revealed by ALMA in the TUKH122 prestellar core in the Orion A cloud

We have investigated the TUKH122 prestellar core in the Orion A cloud using ALMA 3 mm dust continuum, N$_2$H$^+$ ($J=1-0$), and CH$_3$OH ($J_K=2_K-1_K$) molecular line observations. Previous studies showed that TUKH122 is likely on the verge of star formation because the turbulence is almost dissipated and chemically evolved among other starless cores in the Orion A cloud. By combining ALMA 12-m and ACA data, we recover extended emission with a resolution of $\sim5"$ corresponding to 0.01 pc and identify 6 condensations with a mass range of $0.1-0.4$ $M_\odot$ and a radius of $\lesssim0.01$ pc. These condensations are gravitationally bound following a virial analysis and are embedded in the filament including the elongated core with a mass of $\sim29$ $M_\odot$ and a radial density profile of $r^{-1.6}$ derived by {\it Herschel}. The separation of these condensations is $\sim0.035$ pc, consistent with the thermal jeans length at a density of $4.4\times10^5$ cm$^{-3}$. This density is similar to the central part of the core. We also find a tendency that the N$_2$H$^+$ molecule seems to deplete at the dust peak condensation. This condensation may be beginning to collapse because the linewidth becomes broader. Therefore, the fragmentation still occurs in the prestellar core by thermal Jeans instability and multiple stars are formed within the TUKH122 prestellar core. The CH$_3$OH emission shows a large shell-like distribution and surrounds these condensations, suggesting that the CH$_3$OH molecule formed on dust grains is released into gas phase by non-thermal desorption such as photoevaporation caused by cosmic-ray induced UV radiation.

A Statistical Study of Massive Cluster-Forming Clumps

We report results of the observations of 15 regions in several molecular lines for a statistical study of massive cluster-forming clumps. We identified 24 clumps based on the C18O (J=1-0) data obtained by the NRO 45 m telescope, and found that 16 of them are associated with young clusters. The clumps associated with clusters have a typical mass, radius, and molecular density of ~1 X 10^3 Mo, ~0.5 pc, ~1 X 10^5 cm^-3, respectively. We categorized the clumps and clusters into four types according to the spatial coincidence of gas and star density, and discussed their evolutions: Clumps without clusters (Type 1), clumps showing good correlations with clusters (Type 2), clumps showing poor correlations with clusters (Type 3), and clusters with no associated clumps (Type 4). Analyses of the velocity structures and the chemical compositions imply that the clump + cluster systems should evolve from Type 1 to Type 4. We found that some of the Type 2 clumps are infalling on the clump-scale to form clusters at the clump center, which should commonly occur in the beginning of cluster formation. Interestingly, all of the identified Type 1 clumps are likely to be older than the Type 2 clumps in terms of chemical compositions, suggesting that they have been gravitationally stable for a long time possibly being supported by the strong magnetic field of > 1 mG.Type 1 clumps younger than the observed Type 2 clumps should be very rare to find because of their short lifetime.
