A new $SL_2$-action on the rank-two $βγ$-system

We construct an explicit rational \(\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb C)\)-action on the underlying vector space of the rank-two \(βγ\)-system. The construction is motivated by Creutzig's branching decomposition with respect to \(L_{-1}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)\) and a rank-one Heisenberg vertex algebra. We realize the raising and lowering operators as residues of lattice-type fields, prove that they preserve the original \(βγ\)-system despite being defined on localizations, and establish their commutation relations and integrability. The resulting action commutes with the affine \(L_{-1}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)\)-action and all nonzero Heisenberg modes, while the Heisenberg zero mode serves as its Cartan operator. Each affine multiplicity space is thereby identified with \(V_n\otimes\mathcal F_{\mathrm{osc}}\), where \(V_n\) is the irreducible \(\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb C)\)-module of highest weight \(n\) and \(\mathcal F_{\mathrm{osc}}\) is the Heisenberg oscillator Fock space. Thus the Heisenberg charge decomposition is realized as the weight decomposition of \(V_n\). The infinitesimal action is not by vertex algebra derivations and does not preserve the symmetric conformal grading.

W-algebras as conformal extensions of affine VOAs

We provide a criterion for a vertex operator superalgebra homomorphism from an affine vertex algebra to another vertex superalgebra to be conformal, and an additional criterion that guarantees that this homomorphism is surjective. This situation is applied to W-algebras and W-superalgebras and we list all cases where our criterion applies. This gives many new examples of W-algebras that collapse to affine vertex algebras or are conformal extensions. In particular, we provide many examples of simple W-algebras at non-admissible levels that collapse to admissible level affine vertex algebras.

Vertex Superalgebras for Hypertoric Varieties and 3d Abelian Gauge Theories

Hypertoric (or toric hyperkähler) varieties are a class of symplectic singularities and their resolutions, obtained as Hamiltonian reductions of a symplectic vector space acted on by a torus. In physics, they appear as Higgs (and Coulomb) branches of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric quantum field theories with abelian gauge group. In this work, we construct an $\hbar$-adic (in the sense of microlocalisation) sheaf of vertex operator superalgebras over a given smooth hypertoric variety. Its global sections give the $A$-twisted boundary of the corresponding 3d gauge theory. We use this to prove that the associated affine variety of this hypertoric vertex operator superalgebra recovers the singular hypertoric variety. This proves the 3d Higgs branch conjecture for a large class of boundary vertex operator superalgebras. In particular, these vertex operator superalgebras are quasi-lisse. This is in contrast to the (purely even) hypertoric vertex operator superalgebras (and their $\hbar$-adic localisations) constructed previously by Kuwabara as global sections of sheaves on families of universal Poisson deformations of the hypertoric varieties. These are generally not quasi-lisse. We show that the vertex operator superalgebras defined in this paper are (fermionic) simple-current extensions of those defined by Kuwabara, and investigate the consequences for symplectic duality and characters. We observe that the latter are upgraded from partial (or false) theta functions to quasimodular forms.

Modular invariance of characters of quasi-lisse vertex algebras

We study spaces of conformal blocks associated with line bundles over elliptic curves, with coefficients in a vertex algebra. For vertex algebras satisfying suitable finiteness and semisimplicity conditions, which are met by all admissible affine vertex algebras as well as admissible W-algebras associated with nilpotent elements of standard Levi type, we prove the holonomicity of the sheaf of conformal blocks over the moduli space of bundles. Furthermore, we show that the space of flat sections of the associated Jacobi-invariant connection is spanned by trace functions on modules. This result provides a substantial generalization of the celebrated theorem of Yongchang Zhu to quasi-lisse vertex algebras. As a special case, we deduce that for affine vertex algebras at admissible level, the dimension of the space of conformal blocks coincides with the number of admissible weights at that level.

Characters and fusion rules of boundary W-algebras

We study the q-characters and modular data of exceptional W-algebras and give several examples and applications. We establish equality of q-characters and modular data between certain boundary W-algebras, leading in particular to a largely complete determination of fusion rules of exceptional W-algebras in type A.

Generalized Grothendieck's simultaneous resolution and associated varieties of simple affine vertex algebras

The closure of a Diximier sheet is the image of a generalized Grothendieck's simultaneous resolution. We show that the associated variety of simple affine vertex algebras is contained in the closure of the Diximier sheet when a chiralization of generalized Grothendieck's simultaneous resolution exists. This generalizes in a conceptual manner the results obtained by the first named author and Anne Moreau and, in particular, allows to extend them to the types A_2, C_n, E_6, E_7.

On some simple orbifold affine VOAs at non-admissible level arising from rank one 4D SCFTs

We study the representations of some simple affine vertex algebras at non-admissible level arising from rank one 4D SCFTs. In particular, we classify the irreducible highest weight modules of $L_{-2}(G_2)$ and $L_{-2}(B_3)$. It is known by the works of Adamović and Perše that these vertex algebras can be conformally embedded into $L_{-2}(D_4)$. We also compute the associated variety of $L_{-2}(G_2)$, and show that it is the orbifold of the associated variety of $L_{-2}(D_4)$ by the symmetric group of degree 3 which is the Dynkin diagram automorphism group of $D_4$. This provides a new interesting example of associated variety satisfying a number of conjectures in the context of orbifold vertex algebras.

On lisse non-admissible minimal and principal W-algebras

We discuss a possible generalization of a result by the third-named author on the rationality of non-admissible minimal W-algebras. We then apply this generalization to finding rational non-admissible principal W-algebras.

The centre of the modular affine vertex algebra

The Feigin--Frenkel theorem states that, over the complex numbers, the centre of the universal affine vertex algebra at the critical level is an infinite rank polynomial algebra. The first author and W.~Wang observed that in positive characteristics, the universal affine vertex algebra contains a large central subalgebra known as the $p$-centre. They conjectured that at the critical level the centre should be generated by the Feigin--Frenkel centre and the $p$-centre. In this paper we prove the conjecture for classical simple Lie algebras for $p$ larger than the Coxeter number, and for exceptional Lie algebras in large characteristics. Finally, we give an example which shows that at non-critical level the center is larger than the $p$-centre.

Hilbert Schemes of Points in the Plane and Quasi-Lisse Vertex Algebras with $\mathcal{N}=4$ Symmetry

To each complex reflection group $Γ$ one can attach a canonical symplectic singularity $\mathcal{M}_Γ$ arXiv:math/9903070. Motivated by the 4D/2D duality arXiv:1312.5344, arXiv:1707.07679, Bonetti, Meneghelli and Rastelli arXiv:1810.03612 conjectured the existence of a supersymmetric vertex operator superalgebra $\mathsf{W}_Γ$ whose associated variety is isomorphic to $\mathcal{M}_Γ$. We prove this conjecture when the complex reflection group $Γ$ is the symmetric group $S_N$ by constructing a sheaf of $\hbar$-adic vertex operator superalgebras on the Hilbert scheme of $N$ points in the plane. For that case, we also show the free-field realisation of $\mathsf{W}_Γ$ in terms of $\operatorname{rk}(Γ)$ many $βγbc$-systems proposed in arXiv:1810.03612, and identify the character of $\mathsf{W}_Γ$ as a certain quasimodular form of mixed weight and multiple $q$-zeta value. In physical terms, the vertex operator superalgebra $\mathsf{W}_{S_N}$ constructed in this article corresponds via the 4D/2D duality arXiv:1312.5344 to the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $\operatorname{SL}_N$.

Weight representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras and small quantum groups

We study the weight modules over affine Kac-Moody algebras from the view point of vertex algebras, and determine the abelian category of weight modules for the simple affine vertex algebra $L_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ at any non-integral admissible level $k$. In particular, we show that the principal block of the category of weight modules over admissible $L_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ is equivalent to that of the corresponding (unrolled) small quantum group.

Singularities of nilpotent Slodowy slices and collapsing levels of W-algebras

We apply results from the geometry of nilpotent orbits and nilpotent Slodowy slices, together with modularity and asymptotic analysis of characters, to prove many new isomorphisms between affine W-algebras and affine Kac-Moody vertex algebras and their finite extensions at specific admissible levels. In particular we identify many new collapsing levels for W-algebras.

Rationality and Fusion Rules of Exceptional W-Algebras

First, we prove the Kac-Wakimoto conjecture on modular invariance of characters of exceptional affine W-algebras. In fact more generally we prove modular invariance of characters of all lisse W-algebras obtained through Hamiltonian reduction of admissible affine vertex algebras. Second, we prove the rationality of a large subclass of these W-algebras, which includes all exceptional W-algebras of type A and lisse subregular W-algebras in simply laced types. Third, for the latter cases we compute S-matrices and fusion rules. Our results provide the first examples of rational W-algebras associated with non-principal distinguished nilpotent elements, and the corresponding fusion rules are rather mysterious.

Urod algebras and Translation of W-algebras

In this work, we introduce Urod algebras associated to simply-laced Lie algebras as well as the concept of translation of W-algebras. Both results are achieved by showing that the quantum Hamiltonian reduction commutes with tensoring with integrable representations, that is, for $V$ and $L$ an affine vertex algebra and an integrable affine vertex algebra associated with $\mathfrak{g}$, we have the vertex algebra isomorphism $H_{DS,f}^0(V\otimes L)\cong H_{DS,f}^0(V)\otimes L$, where in the left-hand-side the Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction is taken with respect to the diagonal action of $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$ on $V\otimes L$. The proof is based on some new constructionof automorphisms of vertex algebras, which may be of independent interest. As corollaries we get fusion categories of modules of many exceptional W-algebras and we can construct various corner vertex algebras. A major motivation for this work is that Urod algebras of type $A$ provide a representation theoretic interpretation of the celebrated Nakajima-Yoshioka blowup equations for the moduli space of framed torsion free sheaves on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ of an arbitrary rank.

A question of Joseph Ritt from the point of view of vertex algebras

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero. This paper studies a problem proposed by Joseph F. Ritt in 1950. Precisely, we prove that (1) If $p\geq 2$ is an integer, for every integer $i\in\mathbb{N}$, the nilpotency index of the image of $T_i$ in the ring $k\{T\}/[T^p]$ equals $(i+1)p-i$. (2) For every pair of integers $(i,j)$, the nilpotency index of the image of $T_iU_j$ in the ring $k\{T\}/[TU]$ equals $i+j+1$.

Simplicity of vacuum modules and associated varieties

In this note, we prove that the universal affine vertex algebra associated with a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is simple if and only if the associated variety of its unique simple quotient is equal to $\mathfrak{g}^*$. We also derive an analogous result for the quantized Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction applied to the universal affine vertex algebra.
