A note on "Folding wheels and fans."

In S.Gervacio, R.Guerrero and H.Rara, Folding wheels and fans, Graphs and Combinatorics 18 (2002) 731-737, the authors obtain formulas for the clique numbers onto which wheels and fans fold. We present an interpolation theorem which generalizes their theorems 4.2 and 5.2. We show that their formula for wheels is wrong. We show that for threshold graphs, the achromatic number and folding number coincides with the chromatic number.

Folding graphs

Let G be a graph. Consider two nonadjacent vertices x and y that have a common neighbor. Folding G with respect to x and y is the operation which identifies x and y. After a maximal series of foldings the graph is a disjoint union of cliques. The minimal clique number that can appear after a maximal series of foldings is equal to the chromatic number of G. In this paper we consider the problem to determine the maximal clique number which can appear after a maximal series of foldings. We denote this number as Sigma(G) and we call it the max-folding number. We show that the problem is NP-complete, even when restricted to classes such as trivially perfect graphs, cobipartite graphs and planar graphs. We show that the max-folding number of trees is two.

Independent sets in edge-clique graphs

We show that the edge-clique graphs of cocktail party graphs have unbounded rankwidth. This, and other observations lead us to conjecture that the edge-clique cover problem is NP-complete for cographs. We show that the independent set problem on edge-clique graphs of cographs and of distance-hereditary graphs can be solved in O(n^4) time. We show that the independent set problem on edge-clique graphs of graphs without odd wheels remains NP-complete.

Edge-clique graphs of cocktail parties have unbounded rankwidth

In an attempt to find a polynomial-time algorithm for the edge-clique cover problem on cographs we tried to prove that the edge-clique graphs of cographs have bounded rankwidth. However, this is not the case. In this note we show that the edge-clique graphs of cocktail party graphs have unbounded rankwidth.

A note on triangle partitions

Koivisto studied the partitioning of sets of bounded cardinality. We improve his time analysis somewhat, for the special case of triangle partitions, and obtain a slight improvement.

The black-and-white coloring problem on circle graphs

Given a graph G and integers b and w. The black-and-white coloring problem asks if there exist disjoint sets of vertices B and W with |B|=b and |W|=w such that no two vertices x in B and y in W are adjacent. In this paper we show that the problem is polynomial when restricted to permutation graphs and, more generally, to circle graphs.

A note on probe cographs

Let G be a graph and let N_1, ..., N_k be k independent sets in G. The graph G is a k-probe cograph if G can be embedded into a cograph by adding edges between vertices that are contained in the same independent set. We show that there exists an O(k n^5) algorithm to check if a graph G is a k-probe cograph.

The black-and-white coloring problem on permutation graphs

Given a graph G and integers b and w. The black-and-white coloring problem asks if there exist disjoint sets of vertices B and W with |B|=b and |W|=w such that no vertex in B is adjacent to any vertex in W. In this paper we show that the problem is polynomial when restricted to permutation graphs.

The black-and-white coloring problem on distance hereditary graphs and strongly chordal graphs

Given a graph G and integers b and w. The black-and-white coloring problem asks if there exist disjoint sets of vertices B and W with |B|=b and |W|=w such that no vertex in B is adjacent to any vertex in W. In this paper we show that the problem is polynomial when restricted to cographs, distance-hereditary graphs, interval graphs and strongly chordal graphs. We show that the problem is NP-complete on splitgraphs.

New parameterized algorithms for edge dominating set

An edge dominating set of a graph G=(V,E) is a subset M of edges in the graph such that each edge in E-M is incident with at least one edge in M. In an instance of the parameterized edge dominating set problem we are given a graph G=(V,E) and an integer k and we are asked to decide whether G has an edge dominating set of size at most k. In this paper we show that the parameterized edge dominating set problem can be solved in O^*(2.3147^k) time and polynomial space. We show that this problem can be reduced to a quadratic kernel with O(k^3) edges.

Black-and-white threshold graphs

Let k be a natural number. We introduce k-threshold graphs. We show that there exists an O(n^3) algorithm for the recognition of k-threshold graphs for each natural number k. k-Threshold graphs are characterized by a finite collection of forbidden induced subgraphs. For the case k=2 we characterize the partitioned 2-threshold graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs. We introduce restricted -, and special 2-threshold graphs. We characterize both classes by forbidden induced subgraphs. The restricted 2-threshold graphs coincide with the switching class of threshold graphs. This provides a decomposition theorem for the switching class of threshold graphs.

Some results on triangle partitions

We show that there exist efficient algorithms for the triangle packing problem in colored permutation graphs, complete multipartite graphs, distance-hereditary graphs, k-modular permutation graphs and complements of k-partite graphs (when k is fixed). We show that there is an efficient algorithm for C_4-packing on bipartite permutation graphs and we show that C_4-packing on bipartite graphs is NP-complete. We characterize the cobipartite graphs that have a triangle partition.

Graphs without even holes or diamonds

An even hole is an induced chordless cycle of even length at least four. A diamond is an induced subgraph isomorphic to K_4-e. We show that graphs without even holes and without diamonds can be decomposed via clique-separators into graphs that have uniformly bounded cliquewidth.
