Inviscid Incompressible Limit for Degenerate Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations on Expanding Domains

We simultaneously investigate the inviscid and Low Mach number limits on expanding domains for the $3D$ degenerate compressible Navier-Stokes equations, whose viscosity depends on density. Starting from ill-prepared data, we show the limit system is the incompressible Euler system. Our result extends a previous result of Feireisl et al. concerning the constant viscosity Navier-Stokes equations, and is the first to establish the inviscid and incompressible limits at the same time for density-dependent viscosity.

On the Vanishing Viscosity and Magnetic Diffusion Limit for Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamics

The article focuses on the inviscid and non-resistive limit of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in a bounded domain. We derive sufficient conditions for the limit of Leray-Hopf solutions of the MHD system, which converges to the weak solutions of the ideal MHD system when $\mu,\nu\rightarrow0$, under the assumptions of uniform interior regularity and uniform equi-continuity at the boundary. Therefore, we establish an analogue of the Kato-type criterion to show that the energy dissipation rate is independent of the coefficients of viscosity and resistivity. Moreover, to analyze the different decay rates for the viscosity and resistivity, we obtain the limits of infinite and vanishing magnetic Prandtl number ($Pm=\frac{\mu}{\nu}$) for the incompressible MHD system. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first rigorous result from a mathematical viewpoint on the limit of the magnetic Prandtl number.

Revisiting the Radial Velocities of Nearby Open Clusters using Gaia DR3

Open clusters (OCs) are essential laboratories for probing stellar dynamics and tracing the structure and evolution of the Milky Way. Accurate measurements of their average radial velocities (RVs) and RV dispersions are crucial for estimating dynamical masses, orbital evolution, and overall kinematic states. Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) provides an unprecedented volume of high-precision RVs. However, when applied to OCs, Gaia DR3 RVs often yield unusually large and overestimated RV dispersions. This inflation is primarily driven by RV measurement systematics for hot and faint stars, as well as unresolved binary contamination. To mitigate this, we revisit the average RVs and RV dispersions of OCs within 500 pc of the Sun using Gaia DR3. We evaluate the reliability of RV measurements and employ a color-based filtering method. By selecting member stars within an intrinsic color range of $0.2 \le (BP-RP)_{0} \le 1.2$ mag, we exclude hot and cool stars with less reliable RVs. This filtering significantly reduces the inferred RV dispersions while maintaining average RVs consistent with previous literature. Specifically, the median RV dispersion decreases by 26%, dropping from 3.76 km s$^{-1}$ prior to filtering to 2.79 km s$^{-1}$ afterward. These filtered RV dispersions remain systematically larger than tangential velocity dispersions, likely due to residual biases and undetected binaries. However, RV dispersions measured exclusively from red clump giants (found in 6 clusters) are remarkably small ($\lesssim 1.6$ km s$^{-1}$) and align closely with tangential dispersions ($\lesssim 1$ km s$^{-1}$). Ultimately, we provide a practical, Gaia-only strategy to derive more realistic RV dispersions for OCs, identifying red clump giants as exceptionally high-fidelity kinematic tracers for robust cluster studies.

A catalog of new blue stragglers in open clusters with Gaia DR3

The high-precision {\it Gaia} data release 3 (DR3) enables the discovery of numerous open clusters in the Milky Way, providing an excellent opportunity to search for blue straggler stars in open clusters and investigate their formation and evolution in these environments. Using the member stars from literature open cluster catalogs, we visually inspected the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of each cluster and selected cluster candidates that potentially host blue stragglers. We then reassessed cluster memberships using the {\tt pyUPMASK} algorithm with {\it Gaia} DR3 and performed isochrone fitting to derive physical parameters for each cluster, including age, distance modulus, mean reddening, and metallicity. Finally, we empirically identified straggler stars based on their positions relative to the best-fitting isochrone, zero-age main sequence (ZAMS), and equal-mass binary sequence on the CMD. In total, we identified 272 new straggler stars in 99 open clusters, comprising 153 blue stragglers, 98 probable blue stragglers, and 21 yellow stragglers. Compared to the reported blue straggler catalogs based on earlier {\it Gaia} data, our results increase the number of open clusters with stragglers in the Milky Way by 22.2\%, and the total number of blue stragglers by 11.2\%.

On dissipative turbulent solutions to the compressible anisotropic Navier-Stokes equations in unbounded domains

Inspired by Abbatiello, Feireisl and Novotn\'y, we prove the global existence of dissipative turbulent solution for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with anisotropic viscous stress tensor on unbounded domain. Our work complements the result of Bresch and Jabin, where the authors used the new compactness method to prove the existence of a weak solution to the same system in $\mathbb{T}^3$. By virtue of the concept of dissipative turbulent solutions, we are able to relax assumptions on the anisotropic tensor coefficients and the pressure law coefficient. We point out that we establish the existence result on a large class of unbounded domains, which is more conform to geophysical context. We also prove the weak-strong uniqueness property of acquired dissipative turbulent solutions.

Energy Conservation and Vanishing Viscosity Limit for the Primitive Equations

In this paper, we consider the problem of energy conservation for weak solutions of the inviscid Primitive Equations (PE) in a bounded domain. Based on the work [Bardos et al., Onsager's conjecture with physical boundaries and an application to the vanishing viscosity limit, Comm. Math. Phys., 2019, 291-310], we prove the energy conservation for PE with boundary condition under suitable Onsager-type assumptions. But due to the special structure of PE system and its domain, some new challenging difficulties arise: the lack of information about the vertical velocity, and existing corner points in the domain. We introduce some new ideas to overcome the above obstacles. As a byproduct, we give a sufficient condition for absence of anomalous energy dissipation in the vanishing viscosity limit.

Selected open cluster sample for validating atmospheric parameters: Application to Gaia and other surveys

Reliable stellar atmospheric parameters are essential for probing stellar structure and evolution, and for stellar population studies. However, various deviations appear in comparisons with different ground-based spectroscopic surveys. We aim to select high-quality open cluster members and employ the atmospheric parameters provided by the theoretical isochrones of open clusters as a benchmark to assess the quality of stellar atmospheric parameters from Gaia DR3 and other ground-based spectroscopic surveys, such as LAMOST DR11, APOGEE DR17, and GALAH DR4. We selected 130 open clusters with well-defined main sequences within 500 pc of the solar neighborhood as a benchmark sample to estimate the reference atmospheric parameters of the members from the best-fit isochrones of those clusters. By comparing the atmospheric parameters provided by different spectroscopic surveys to the theoretical parameters, we found that the atmospheric parameter deviation and the corresponding dispersions exhibit different variations. The atmospheric parameter deviations of F, G, and K-type stars are smaller than those of B, A, and M-type stars for most surveys. For most samples, the dispersion of Teff decreases as temperature decreases, whereas the dispersion of logg shows the opposite trend.

On the Lack of Robustness of Binary Function Similarity Systems

Binary function similarity, which often relies on learning-based algorithms to identify what functions in a pool are most similar to a given query function, is a sought-after topic in different communities, including machine learning, software engineering, and security. Its importance stems from the impact it has in facilitating several crucial tasks, from reverse engineering and malware analysis to automated vulnerability detection. Whereas recent work cast light around performance on this long-studied problem, the research landscape remains largely lackluster in understanding the resiliency of the state-of-the-art machine learning models against adversarial attacks. As security requires to reason about adversaries, in this work we assess the robustness of such models through a simple yet effective black-box greedy attack, which modifies the topology and the content of the control flow of the attacked functions. We demonstrate that this attack is successful in compromising all the models, achieving average attack success rates of 57.06% and 95.81% depending on the problem settings (targeted and untargeted attacks). Our findings are insightful: top performance on clean data does not necessarily relate to top robustness properties, which explicitly highlights performance-robustness trade-offs one should consider when deploying such models, calling for further research.

Unveiling the Binary Nature of NGC 2323

As a well-known open cluster, NGC 2323 (also called M50) has been widely investigated for over a hundred years and has always been considered a classical single cluster. In this work, with the help of Gaia DR3, we study the binary structure nature of this cluster. Although indistinguishable in the spatial space, the small but undeniable difference in the proper motion indicates that they may be two individual clusters. After investigating the properties of the two clusters, it is found that they have very close positions (three-dimensional $\Delta$pos = 12.3 pc, $\sigma_{\Delta \mathrm{pos}} = 3.4$ pc) and similar tangential velocities (two-dimensional $\Delta$V = 2.2 km s$^{-1}$, $\sigma_{\Delta \mathrm{V}} = 0.02$ km s$^{-1}$), indicating the existence of their physical association. Moreover, the best isochrone fitting ages of the two clusters are the same (158 Myr), further proving their possibly common origin. To comprehensively understand the formation and evolution of this binary cluster, we employ the PETAR $N$-body code to trace back their birthplace and deduce their dynamical evolutionary fate. With observational mean cluster properties, the simulations suggest that they may form together, and then orbit each other as a binary cluster for over 200 Myr. After that, because of their gradual mass loss, the two clusters will eventually separate and evolve into two independent clusters. Meanwhile, the numerical $N$-body simulation suggests that the less massive cluster is unlikely to be the cluster tidal tails created by the differential rotation of the Milky Way.

On the Determination of Stellar Mass and Binary Fraction of Open Clusters within 500 pc from the Sun

We investigated the stellar mass function and the binary fraction of 114 nearby open clusters (OCs) using the high-precision photometric data from Gaia Data Release 3 (Gaia DR3). We estimated the mass of member stars by using a ridge line (RL) that is better in line with the observed color-magnitude diagram (CMD), thus obtaining more accurate stellar mass and binary mass ratio ($q$) at the low-mass region. By analyzing the present-day mass function (PDMF) of star clusters, we found that 108 OCs follow a two-stage power-law distribution, whereas 6 OCs present a single power-law PDMF. Subsequently, we fitted the high(low)-mass index of PDMF ($dN/dm \propto m^{-\alpha}$), denoted as $\alpha_{\rm h}$($\alpha_{\rm l}$), and segmentation point $m_{\rm c}$. For our cluster sample, the median values of $\alpha_{\rm h}$ and $\alpha_{\rm l}$ are 2.65 and 0.95, respectively, which are approximately consistent with the initial mass function (IMF) results provided by Kroupa (2001). We utilized the cumulative radial number distribution of stars with different masses to quantify the degree of mass segregation. We found a significant positive correlation between the state of dynamical evolution and mass segregation in OCs. We also estimated the fraction of binary stars with $q \geq 0.5$, ranging from 6% to 34% with a median of 17%. Finally, we provided a catalog of 114 nearby cluster properties, including the total mass, the binary fraction, the PDMF, and the dynamical state.

Interest-Aware Joint Caching, Computing, and Communication Optimization for Mobile VR Delivery in MEC Networks

In the upcoming B5G/6G era, virtual reality (VR) over wireless has become a typical application, which is an inevitable trend in the development of video. However, in immersive and interactive VR experiences, VR services typically exhibit high delay, while simultaneously posing challenges for the energy consumption of local devices. To address these issues, this paper aims to improve the performance of the VR service in the edge-terminal cooperative system. Specifically, we formulate a problem of joint caching, computing, and communication VR service policy, by optimizing the weighted sum of overall VR delivery delay and energy consumption of local devices. For the purpose of designing the optimal VR service policy, the optimization problem is decoupled into three independent subproblems to be solved separately. To enhance the caching efficiency within the network, a bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (Bert)-based user interest analysis method is first proposed to characterize the content requesting behavior accurately. On the basis of this, a service cost minimum-maximization problem is formulated with consideration of performance fairness among users. Thereafter, the joint caching and computing scheme is derived for each user with given allocation of communication resources while a bisection-based communication scheme is acquired with the given information on joint caching and computing policy. With alternative optimization, an optimal policy for joint caching, computing and communication based on user interest can be finally obtained. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed user interest-aware caching scheme and the effective of the joint caching, computing and communication optimization policy with consideration of user fairness.

Energy equality for the compressible Primitive Equations with vacuum

The paper deals with the problem of the energy conservation for the weak solutions to the compressible Primitive Equations (CPE) system with degenerate viscosity. The sufficient conditions on the regularity of weak solutions for the energy equality are obtained even for the case when the solutions may include vacuum. In this paper, we show two theorems, the first one gives regularity in the classical isotropic Sobolev and Besov spaces. The second one states regularity in the anisotropic spaces. We obtain new regularity results in the second theorem due to the special structure of CPE system, which are in contrast to compressible Navier-Stokes equations.

Hunting for Neighboring Open Clusters with Gaia DR3: 101 New Open Clusters within 500 pc

We systematically searched for open clusters in the solar neighborhood within 500 pc using pyUPMASK and HDBSCAN clustering algorithms based on {\it Gaia} DR3. Taking into consideration that the physical size for most open clusters is less than 50 pc, we adopted a slicing approach for different distance shells and identified 324 neighboring open clusters, including 223 reported open clusters and 101 newly discovered open clusters (named as OCSN, Open Cluster of Solar Neighborhood). Our discovery has increased the number of open clusters in the solar neighborhood by about 45\%. In this work, larger spatial extents and more member stars were attained for our cluster sample. We provided the member stars and the membership probabilities through the pyUPMASK algorithm for each cluster and derived their astrophysical, age, and structural parameters.

Depersonalized Federated Learning: Tackling Statistical Heterogeneity by Alternating Stochastic Gradient Descent

Federated learning (FL), which has gained increasing attention recently, enables distributed devices to train a common machine learning (ML) model for intelligent inference cooperatively without data sharing. However, problems in practical networks, such as non-independent-and-identically-distributed (non-iid) raw data and limited bandwidth, give rise to slow and unstable convergence of the FL training process. To address these issues, we propose a new FL method that can significantly mitigate statistical heterogeneity through the depersonalization mechanism. Particularly, we decouple the global and local optimization objectives by alternating stochastic gradient descent, thus reducing the accumulated variance in local update phases to accelerate the FL convergence. Then we analyze the proposed method detailedly to show the proposed method converging at a sublinear speed in the general non-convex setting. Finally, numerical results are conducted with experiments on public datasets to verify the effectiveness of our proposed method.

A Probabilistic Bound for Peak Age of Information Guarantee

This paper considers the distribution of a general peak age of information (AoI) model and develops a general analysis approach for probabilistic performance guarantee from the time-domain perspective. Firstly, a general relationship between the peak AoI and the inter-arrival and service times of packets is revealed. With the help of martingale theory, a probabilistic bound on the peak AoI is then derived for the general case of endogenous independently and identically distributed increments in information generation and transmission processes. Thereafter, the application of the obtained bound is illustrated with the M/M/1 and D/M/1 queuing models. The validity of the proposed bound is finally examined with numerical results.

On well-posedness of quantum fluid systems in the class of dissipative solutions

The main objects of the present work are the quantum Navier-Stokes and quantum Euler systems; for the first one, in particular, we will consider constant viscosity coefficients. We deal with the concept of dissipative solutions, for which we will first prove the weak-strong uniqueness principle and afterwards, we will show the global existence for any finite energy initial data. Finally, we will prove that both systems admit a semiflow selection in the class of dissipative solutions.

On the hydrostatic approximation of compressible anisotropic Navier-Stokes equations -- rigorous justification

In this work, we obtain the hydrostatic approximation by taking the small aspect ratio limit to the Navier-Stokes equations. The aspect ratio (the ratio of the depth to horizontal width) is a geometrical constraint in general large scale geophysical motions that the vertical scale is significantly smaller than horizontal. We use the versatile relative entropy inequality to prove rigorously the limit from the compressible Navier-Stokes equations to the compressible Primitive Equations. This is the first work to use relative entropy inequality for proving hydrostatic approximation and derive the compressible Primitive Equations.

Measure-valued solutions and weak-strong uniqueness for the incompressible inviscid fluid-rigid body interaction

We consider a coupled system of partial and ordinary differential equations describing the interaction between an isentropic inviscid fluid and a rigid body moving freely inside the fluid. We prove the existence of measure-valued solutions which is generated by the vanishing viscosity limit of incompressible fluid-rigid body interaction system under some physically constitutive relations. Moreover, we show that the measure-value solution coincides with strong solution on the interval of its existence. This relies on the weak-strong uniqueness analysis.
