Artificial Intelligence Enables Real-Time and Intuitive Control of Prostheses via Nerve Interface

Objective: The next generation prosthetic hand that moves and feels like a real hand requires a robust neural interconnection between the human minds and machines. Methods: Here we present a neuroprosthetic system to demonstrate that principle by employing an artificial intelligence (AI) agent to translate the amputee's movement intent through a peripheral nerve interface. The AI agent is designed based on the recurrent neural network (RNN) and could simultaneously decode six degree-of-freedom (DOF) from multichannel nerve data in real-time. The decoder's performance is characterized in motor decoding experiments with three human amputees. Results: First, we show the AI agent enables amputees to intuitively control a prosthetic hand with individual finger and wrist movements up to 97-98% accuracy. Second, we demonstrate the AI agent's real-time performance by measuring the reaction time and information throughput in a hand gesture matching task. Third, we investigate the AI agent's long-term uses and show the decoder's robust predictive performance over a 16-month implant duration. Conclusion & significance: Our study demonstrates the potential of AI-enabled nerve technology, underling the next generation of dexterous and intuitive prosthetic hands.

Crystal growth engineering and origin of the weak ferromagnetism in antiferromagnetic matrix of orthochromates from $t$-$e$ orbital hybridization

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on intriguing magnetic properties of quasiferroelectric orthochromates. Large single crystals of the family of RECrO$_3$ (RE = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds were successfully grown. Neutron Laue study indicates a good quality of the obtained single crystals. Applied magnetic-field and temperature dependent magnetization measurements reveal their intrinsic magnetic properties, especially the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperatures. Density functional theory studies of the electronic structures were carried out using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional plus Hubbard $U$ method. Crystallographic information and magnetism were theoretically optimized systematically. When RE$^{3+}$ cations vary from Y$^{3+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ to Lu$^{3+}$ ions, the calculated $t$-$e$ orbital hybridization degree and Néel temperature behave similarly to the experimentally-determined AFM transition temperature with variation in cationic radius. We found that the $t$-$e$ hybridization is anisotropic, causing a magnetic anisotropy of Cr$^{3+}$ sublattices. This was evaluated with the nearest-neighbour $J_1$-$J_2$ model. Our research provides a picture of the electronic structures during the $t$-$e$ hybridization process while changing RE ions and sheds light on the nature of the weak ferromagnetism coexisting with predominated antiferromagnetism. The available large RECrO$_3$ single crystals build a platform for further studies of orthochromates.

The perturbation of the de Rham Hodge Operator and the Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for manifolds with boundary

In this paper, we give Lichnerowicz type formulas for the perturbation of the de Rham Hodge operator. We prove the Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorems for the perturbation of the de Rham Hodge operator on 4-dimensional and 6-dimensional compact manifolds with (resp.without) boundary. Some concrete examples of the perturbation of the de Rham Hodge operator are provided for our main theorems.

Solid-like high harmonic generation from rotationally periodic systems

High harmonic generation (HHG) from crystals in strong laser fields has been understood by the band theory of solid, which is based on the periodic boundary condition (PBC) of translational invariant. For systems having PBC of rotational invariant, in principles an analogous Bloch theorem can be developed and applied. Taking a ring-type cluster of cyclo[18]carbon as a representative, we theoretically suggest a quasi-band model and study its HHG by solving time-dependent Liouville-von Neumann equation. Under the irradiation of circularly polarized laser, explicit selection rules for left-handed and right-handed harmonics are observed, while in linearly polarized laser field, cyclo[18]carbon exhibits solid-like HHG originated from intra-band oscillations and inter-band transitions, which in turn is promising to optically detect the symmetry and geometry of controversial structures. In a sense, this work presents a connection linking the high harmonics of gases and solids.

Super warped products with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection

In this paper, we define a semi-symmetric non-metric connection on super Riemannian manifolds. And we compute the curvature tensor and the Ricci tensor of a semi-symmetric non-metric connection on super warped product spaces. Next, we introduce two kinds of super warped product spaces with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection and give the conditions that two super warped product spaces with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection are the Einstein super spaces with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection.

Multi-View Partial (MVP) Point Cloud Challenge 2021 on Completion and Registration: Methods and Results

As real-scanned point clouds are mostly partial due to occlusions and viewpoints, reconstructing complete 3D shapes based on incomplete observations becomes a fundamental problem for computer vision. With a single incomplete point cloud, it becomes the partial point cloud completion problem. Given multiple different observations, 3D reconstruction can be addressed by performing partial-to-partial point cloud registration. Recently, a large-scale Multi-View Partial (MVP) point cloud dataset has been released, which consists of over 100,000 high-quality virtual-scanned partial point clouds. Based on the MVP dataset, this paper reports methods and results in the Multi-View Partial Point Cloud Challenge 2021 on Completion and Registration. In total, 128 participants registered for the competition, and 31 teams made valid submissions. The top-ranked solutions will be analyzed, and then we will discuss future research directions.

Distribution-Balanced Loss for Multi-Label Classification in Long-Tailed Datasets

We present a new loss function called Distribution-Balanced Loss for the multi-label recognition problems that exhibit long-tailed class distributions. Compared to conventional single-label classification problem, multi-label recognition problems are often more challenging due to two significant issues, namely the co-occurrence of labels and the dominance of negative labels (when treated as multiple binary classification problems). The Distribution-Balanced Loss tackles these issues through two key modifications to the standard binary cross-entropy loss: 1) a new way to re-balance the weights that takes into account the impact caused by label co-occurrence, and 2) a negative tolerant regularization to mitigate the over-suppression of negative labels. Experiments on both Pascal VOC and COCO show that the models trained with this new loss function achieve significant performance gains over existing methods. Code and models are available at: https://github.com/wutong16/DistributionBalancedLoss .

In this paper, we obtain two Lichnerowicz type formulas for the operators $\sqrt{-1}\widehat{c}(V)(d+δ)$ and $-\sqrt{-1}(d+δ)\widehat{c}(V)$. And we give the proof of Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorems for the operators $\sqrt{-1}\widehat{c}(V)(d+δ)$ and $-\sqrt{-1}(d+δ)\widehat{c}(V)$ on 3,4-dimensional oriented compact manifolds with (resp.without) boundary.

Density-aware Chamfer Distance as a Comprehensive Metric for Point Cloud Completion

Chamfer Distance (CD) and Earth Mover's Distance (EMD) are two broadly adopted metrics for measuring the similarity between two point sets. However, CD is usually insensitive to mismatched local density, and EMD is usually dominated by global distribution while overlooks the fidelity of detailed structures. Besides, their unbounded value range induces a heavy influence from the outliers. These defects prevent them from providing a consistent evaluation. To tackle these problems, we propose a new similarity measure named Density-aware Chamfer Distance (DCD). It is derived from CD and benefits from several desirable properties: 1) it can detect disparity of density distributions and is thus a more intensive measure of similarity compared to CD; 2) it is stricter with detailed structures and significantly more computationally efficient than EMD; 3) the bounded value range encourages a more stable and reasonable evaluation over the whole test set. We adopt DCD to evaluate the point cloud completion task, where experimental results show that DCD pays attention to both the overall structure and local geometric details and provides a more reliable evaluation even when CD and EMD contradict each other. We can also use DCD as the training loss, which outperforms the same model trained with CD loss on all three metrics. In addition, we propose a novel point discriminator module that estimates the priority for another guided down-sampling step, and it achieves noticeable improvements under DCD together with competitive results for both CD and EMD. We hope our work could pave the way for a more comprehensive and practical point cloud similarity evaluation. Our code will be available at: https://github.com/wutong16/Density_aware_Chamfer_Distance .

Gauss-Bonnet theorems associated to deformed Schouten-Van Kampen connection in the affine group and the group of rigid motions of the Minkowski plane

In this paper, we define deformed Schouten-Van Kampen connections which are metric connections and compute sub-Riemannian limits of Gaussian curvature for a Euclidean C2-smooth surface associated to deformed Schouten-Van Kampen connections with two kinds of distributions in the affine group and the group of rigid motions of the Minkowski plane away from characteristic points and signed geodesic curvature for Euclidean C2-smooth curves on surfaces. According to above results, we get Gauss-Bonnet theorems associated to two kinds of deformed Schouten-Van Kampen connections in the affine group and the group of rigid motions of the Minkowski plane.

Modeling spatial waves of Wolbachia invasion for controlling mosquito-borne diseases

Wolbachia is a natural bacterium that can infect mosquitoes and reduce their ability to transmit mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue fever, Zika, and chikungunya. Field trials and modeling studies have shown that the fraction of infection among the mosquitoes must exceed a threshold level for the infection to persist. To capture this threshold, it is critical to consider the spatial heterogeneity in the distributions of the infected and uninfected mosquitoes, which is created by the local release of the infected mosquitoes. We develop and analyze partial differential equation (PDE) models to study the invasion dynamics of Wolbachia infection among mosquitoes in the field. Our reaction-diffusion-type models account for both the complex vertical transmission and the spatial mosquito dispersion. We characterize the threshold for a successful invasion, which is a bubble-shaped profile, called the "critical bubble". The critical bubble is optimal in its release size compared to other spatial profiles in a one-dimensional landscape. The fraction of infection near the release center is higher than the threshold level for the corresponding homogeneously mixing ODE models. We show that the proposed spatial models give rise to the traveling waves of Wolbachia infection when above the threshold. We quantify how the threshold condition and traveling-wave velocity depend on the diffusion coefficients and other model parameters. Numerical studies for different scenarios are presented to inform the design of release strategies.

Adversarial Robustness under Long-Tailed Distribution

Adversarial robustness has attracted extensive studies recently by revealing the vulnerability and intrinsic characteristics of deep networks. However, existing works on adversarial robustness mainly focus on balanced datasets, while real-world data usually exhibits a long-tailed distribution. To push adversarial robustness towards more realistic scenarios, in this work we investigate the adversarial vulnerability as well as defense under long-tailed distributions. In particular, we first reveal the negative impacts induced by imbalanced data on both recognition performance and adversarial robustness, uncovering the intrinsic challenges of this problem. We then perform a systematic study on existing long-tailed recognition methods in conjunction with the adversarial training framework. Several valuable observations are obtained: 1) natural accuracy is relatively easy to improve, 2) fake gain of robust accuracy exists under unreliable evaluation, and 3) boundary error limits the promotion of robustness. Inspired by these observations, we propose a clean yet effective framework, RoBal, which consists of two dedicated modules, a scale-invariant classifier and data re-balancing via both margin engineering at training stage and boundary adjustment during inference. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our approach over other state-of-the-art defense methods. To our best knowledge, we are the first to tackle adversarial robustness under long-tailed distributions, which we believe would be a significant step towards real-world robustness. Generalizing Nucleus Recognition Model in Multi-source Images via Pruning

Ki67 is a significant biomarker in the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer, whose index can be evaluated by quantifying its expression in Ki67 immunohistochemistry (IHC) stained images. However, quantitative analysis on multi-source Ki67 images is yet a challenging task in practice due to cross-domain distribution differences, which result from imaging variation, staining styles, and lesion types. Many recent studies have made some efforts on domain generalization (DG), whereas there are still some noteworthy limitations. Specifically in the case of Ki67 images, learning invariant representation is at the mercy of the insufficient number of domains and the cell categories mismatching in different domains. In this paper, we propose a novel method to improve DG by searching the domain-agnostic subnetwork in a domain merging scenario. Partial model parameters are iteratively pruned according to the domain gap, which is caused by the data converting from a single domain into merged domains during training. In addition, the model is optimized by fine-tuning on merged domains to eliminate the interference of class mismatching among various domains. Furthermore, an appropriate implementation is attained by applying the pruning method to different parts of the framework. Compared with known DG methods, our method yields excellent performance in multiclass nucleus recognition of Ki67 IHC images, especially in the lost category cases. Moreover, our competitive results are also evaluated on the public dataset over the state-of-the-art DG methods.

Towards Evaluating and Training Verifiably Robust Neural Networks

Recent works have shown that interval bound propagation (IBP) can be used to train verifiably robust neural networks. Reseachers observe an intriguing phenomenon on these IBP trained networks: CROWN, a bounding method based on tight linear relaxation, often gives very loose bounds on these networks. We also observe that most neurons become dead during the IBP training process, which could hurt the representation capability of the network. In this paper, we study the relationship between IBP and CROWN, and prove that CROWN is always tighter than IBP when choosing appropriate bounding lines. We further propose a relaxed version of CROWN, linear bound propagation (LBP), that can be used to verify large networks to obtain lower verified errors than IBP. We also design a new activation function, parameterized ramp function (ParamRamp), which has more diversity of neuron status than ReLU. We conduct extensive experiments on MNIST, CIFAR-10 and Tiny-ImageNet with ParamRamp activation and achieve state-of-the-art verified robustness. Code and the appendix are available at https://github.com/ZhaoyangLyu/VerifiablyRobustNN.

QNMnonreciprocal_resonators: an openly available toolbox for computing the QuasiNormal Modes of nonreciprocal resonators

QNMnonreciprocal_resonators is an extension (posted in 2021) of the QNMEig solver of the freeware package MAN. It provides a comprehensive presentation of the computation and normalization of electromagnetic quasinormal modes (QNMs) of resonators composed of nonreciprocal materials. It features a theoretical background on the topic and a COMSOL model that illustrates how to put into practice the theory on the example of a Yttrium iron garnet wire in a homogenous background. This document provides the necessary details on how the model is built so that the interested readers may easily modify it for computing QNMs of other nonreciprocal resonators.

TM-NET: Deep Generative Networks for Textured Meshes

We introduce TM-NET, a novel deep generative model for synthesizing textured meshes in a part-aware manner. Once trained, the network can generate novel textured meshes from scratch or predict textures for a given 3D mesh, without image guidance. Plausible and diverse textures can be generated for the same mesh part, while texture compatibility between parts in the same shape is achieved via conditional generation. Specifically, our method produces texture maps for individual shape parts, each as a deformable box, leading to a natural UV map with minimal distortion. The network separately embeds part geometry (via a PartVAE) and part texture (via a TextureVAE) into their respective latent spaces, so as to facilitate learning texture probability distributions conditioned on geometry. We introduce a conditional autoregressive model for texture generation, which can be conditioned on both part geometry and textures already generated for other parts to achieve texture compatibility. To produce high-frequency texture details, our TextureVAE operates in a high-dimensional latent space via dictionary-based vector quantization. We also exploit transparencies in the texture as an effective means to model complex shape structures including topological details. Extensive experiments demonstrate the plausibility, quality, and diversity of the textures and geometries generated by our network, while avoiding inconsistency issues that are common to novel view synthesis methods.
