Check on the features of potted 20-inch PMTs with 1F3 electronics prototype at Pan-Asia

The Jiangmen underground neutrino observatory (JUNO) is a neutrino project with a 20-kton liquid scintillator detector located at 700-m underground. The large 20-inch PMTs are one of the crucial components of the JUNO experiment aiming to precision neutrino measurements with better than 3% energy resolution at 1 MeV. The excellent energy resolution and a large fiducial volume provide many exciting opportunities for addressing important topics in neutrino and astro-particle physics. With the container #D at JUNO Pan-Asia PMT testing and potting station, the features of waterproof potted 20-inch PMTs were measured with JUNO 1F3 electronics prototype in waveform and charge, which are valuable for better understanding on the performance of the waterproof potted PMTs and the JUNO 1F3 electronics. In this paper, basic features of JUNO 1F3 electronics prototype run at Pan-Asia will be introduced, followed by an analysis of the waterproof potted 20-inch PMTs and a comparison with the results from commercial electronics used by the container #A and #B.

Frequency Domain Identifiability and Sloppiness of Descriptor Systems with an LFT Structure

Identifiability and sloppiness are investigated in this paper for the parameters of a descriptor system based on its frequency response samples. Two metrics are suggested respectively for measuring absolute and relative sloppiness of the parameter vector at a prescribed value. In this descriptor system, system matrices are assumed to depend on its parameters through a linear fractional transformation (LFT). When an associated transfer function matrix (TFM) is of full normal row rank, a matrix rank based necessary and sufficient condition is derived for parameter identifiability with a set of finitely many frequency responses. This condition can be verified recursively which is computationally quite appealing, especially when the system is of a large scale. From this condition, an algorithm is suggested to find a set of frequencies with which the frequency responses of the system are capable to uniquely determine its parameters. An ellipsoid approximation is given for the set consisting of all the parameter values with which the associated descriptor system has a frequency response that deviates within a prescribed distance, from that corresponding to a globally identifiable parameter vector value. Explicit formulas are also derived for the suggested absolute and relative sloppiness metrics.

High average power ultrafast laser technologies for driving future advanced accelerators

Large scale laser facilities are needed to advance the energy frontier in high energy physics and accelerator physics. Laser plasma accelerators are core to advanced accelerator concepts aimed at reaching TeV electron electron colliders. In these facilities, intense laser pulses drive plasmas and are used to accelerate electrons to high energies in remarkably short distances. A laser plasma accelerator could in principle reach high energies with an accelerating length that is 1000 times shorter than in conventional RF based accelerators. Notionally, laser driven particle beam energies could scale beyond state of the art conventional accelerators. LPAs have produced multi GeV electron beams in about 20 cm with relative energy spread of about 2 percent, supported by highly developed laser technology. This validates key elements of the US DOE strategy for such accelerators to enable future colliders but extending best results to date to a TeV collider will require lasers with higher average power. While the per pulse energies envisioned for laser driven colliders are achievable with current lasers, low laser repetition rates limit potential collider luminosity. Applications will require rates of kHz to tens of kHz at Joules of energy and high efficiency, and a collider would require about 100 such stages, a leap from current Hz class LPAs. This represents a challenging 1000 fold increase in laser repetition rates beyond current state of the art. This whitepaper describes current research and outlook for candidate laser systems as well as the accompanying broadband and high damage threshold optics needed for driving future advanced accelerators.

Fusion of Majorana Bound States with Mini-Gate Control in Two-Dimensional Systems

A hallmark of topological superconductivity is the non-Abelian statistics of Majorana bound states (MBS), its chargeless zero-energy emergent quasiparticles. The resulting fractionalization of a single electron, stored nonlocally as a two spatially-separated MBS, provides a powerful platform for implementing fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. However, despite intensive efforts, experimental support for MBS remains indirect and does not probe their non-Abelian statistics. Here we propose how to overcome this obstacle in mini-gate controlled planar Josephson junctions (JJs) and demonstrate non-Abelian statistics through MBS fusion, detected by charge sensing using a quantum point contact, based on dynamical simulations. The feasibility of preparing, manipulating, and fusing MBS in two-dimensional (2D) systems is supported in our experiments which demonstrate the gate control of topological transition and superconducting properties with five mini gates in InAs/Al-based JJs. While we focus on this well-established platform, where the topological superconductivity was already experimentally detected, our proposal to identify elusive non-Abelian statistics motivates also further MBS studies in other gate-controlled 2D systems.

Nonreciprocal transport in a bilayer of MnBi2Te4 and Pt

MnBi2Te4 (MBT) is the first intrinsic magnetic topological insulator with the interaction of spin-momentum locked surface electrons and intrinsic magnetism, and it exhibits novel magnetic and topological phenomena. Recent studies suggested that the interaction of electrons and magnetism can be affected by the Mn-doped Bi2Te3 phase at the surface due to inevitable structural defects. Here we report an observation of nonreciprocal transport, i.e. current-direction-dependent resistance, in a bilayer composed of antiferromagnetic MBT and nonmagnetic Pt. The emergence of the nonreciprocal response below the Néel temperature confirms a correlation between nonreciprocity and intrinsic magnetism in the surface state of MBT. The angular dependence of the nonreciprocal transport indicates that nonreciprocal response originates from the asymmetry scattering of electrons at the surface of MBT mediated by magnon. Our work provides an insight into nonreciprocity arising from the correlation between magnetism and Dirac surface electrons in intrinsic magnetic topological insulators.

TFDPM: Attack detection for cyber-physical systems with diffusion probabilistic models

With the development of AIoT, data-driven attack detection methods for cyber-physical systems (CPSs) have attracted lots of attention. However, existing methods usually adopt tractable distributions to approximate data distributions, which are not suitable for complex systems. Besides, the correlation of the data in different channels does not attract sufficient attention. To address these issues, we use energy-based generative models, which are less restrictive on functional forms of the data distribution. In addition, graph neural networks are used to explicitly model the correlation of the data in different channels. In the end, we propose TFDPM, a general framework for attack detection tasks in CPSs. It simultaneously extracts temporal pattern and feature pattern given the historical data. Then extract features are sent to a conditional diffusion probabilistic model. Predicted values can be obtained with the conditional generative network and attacks are detected based on the difference between predicted values and observed values. In addition, to realize real-time detection, a conditional noise scheduling network is proposed to accelerate the prediction process. Experimental results show that TFDPM outperforms existing state-of-the-art attack detection methods. The noise scheduling network increases the detection speed by three times.

Structure Identifiability of an NDS with LFT Parametrized Subsystems

Requirements on subsystems have been made clear in this paper for a linear time invariant (LTI) networked dynamic system (NDS), under which subsystem interconnections can be estimated from external output measurements. In this NDS, subsystems may have distinctive dynamics, and subsystem interconnections are arbitrary. It is assumed that system matrices of each subsystem depend on its (pseudo) first principle parameters (FPPs) through a linear fractional transformation (LFT). It has been proven that if in each subsystem, the transfer function matrix (TFM) from its internal inputs to its external outputs is of full normal column rank (FNCR), while the TFM from its external inputs to its internal outputs is of full normal row rank (FNRR), then the structure of the NDS is identifiable. Moreover, under some particular situations like there are no direct information transmission from an internal input to an internal output in each subsystem, a necessary and sufficient condition is established for NDS structure identifiability. A matrix valued polynomial (MVP) rank based equivalent condition is further derived, which depends affinely on subsystem (pseudo) FPPs and can be independently verified for each subsystem. From this condition, some necessary conditions are obtained for both subsystem dynamics and its (pseudo) FPPs, using the Kronecker canonical form (KCF) of a matrix pencil.

Quantum Spin-Valley Hall Kink States: From Concept to Materials Design

We propose a general and tunable platform to realize high-density arrays of quantum spin-valley Hall kink (QSVHK) states with spin-valley-momentum locking based on a two-dimensional hexagonal topological insulator. Through the analysis of Berry curvature and topological charge, the QSVHK states are found to be topologically protected by the valley-inversion and time-reversal symmetries. Remarkably, the conductance of QSVHK states remains quantized against either nonmagnetic or long-range magnetic disorder, verified by the Green function calculations. Based on first-principles results, we show that QSVHK states, protected with a gap up to 287 meV, can be realized in bismuthene by alloy engineering, surface functionalization, or electric field, supporting non-volatile applications of spin-valley filters, valves, and waveguides even at room temperature.

Global Structure Identifiability and Reconstructibility of an NDS with Descriptor Subsystems

This paper investigates requirements on a networked dynamic system (NDS) such that its subsystem interactions can be solely determined from experiment data or reconstructed from its overall model. The NDS is constituted from several subsystems whose dynamics are described through a descriptor form. Except regularity on each subsystem and the whole NDS, no other restrictions are put on either subsystem dynamics or subsystem interactions. A matrix rank based necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the global identifiability of subsystem interactions, which leads to several conclusions about NDS structure identifiability when there is some a priori information. This matrix also gives an explicit description for the set of subsystem interactions that can not be distinguished from experiment data only. In addition, under a well-posedness assumption, a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for the reconstructibility of subsystem interactions from an NDS descriptor form model. This condition can be verified with each subsystem separately and is therefore attractive in the analysis and synthesis of a large-scale NDS. Simulation results show that rather than increases monotonically with the distance of subsystem interactions to the undifferentiable set, the magnitude of the external output differences between two NDSs with distinct subsystem interactions increases much more rapidly when one of them is close to be unstable. In addition, directions of probing signals are also very important in distinguishing external outputs of distinctive NDSs.These findings are expected to be helpful in identification experiment designs, etc.

ScoreGrad: Multivariate Probabilistic Time Series Forecasting with Continuous Energy-based Generative Models

Multivariate time series prediction has attracted a lot of attention because of its wide applications such as intelligence transportation, AIOps. Generative models have achieved impressive results in time series modeling because they can model data distribution and take noise into consideration. However, many existing works can not be widely used because of the constraints of functional form of generative models or the sensitivity to hyperparameters. In this paper, we propose ScoreGrad, a multivariate probabilistic time series forecasting framework based on continuous energy-based generative models. ScoreGrad is composed of time series feature extraction module and conditional stochastic differential equation based score matching module. The prediction can be achieved by iteratively solving reverse-time SDE. To the best of our knowledge, ScoreGrad is the first continuous energy based generative model used for time series forecasting. Furthermore, ScoreGrad achieves state-of-the-art results on six real-world datasets. The impact of hyperparameters and sampler types on the performance are also explored. Code is available at https://github.com/yantijin/ScoreGradPred.

Constructibility of a Causal/Impulse Free NDS Using Descriptor Form Subsystems

Requirements are investigated in this paper for each descriptor form subsystem, with which a causal/impulse free networked dynamic system (NDS) can be constructed. For this purpose, a matrix rank based necessary and sufficient condition is at first derived for the causality/impulse freeness of an NDS, in which the associated matrix depends affinely on subsystem connections. From this result, a necessary and sufficient condition is derived for each subsystem, such that there exists a subsystem connection matrix that leads to a causal/impulse free NDS. This condition further leads to a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a local static output feedback that guarantees the construction of a causal/impulse free NDS. A prominent property of these conditions are that all the involved numerical computations are performed independently on each individual subsystem, which is quite attractive in reducing computation costs and improving numerical stability for large scale NDS analysis and synthesis. Situations have also been clarified in which NDS causality/impulse freeness is independent of subsystem connections. It has also been made clear that under some situations, local static output feedbacks are not helpful in constructing a causal NDS.

Exploration of Whether Skylight Polarization Patterns Contain Three-dimensional Attitude Information

Our previous work has demonstrated that Rayleigh model, which is widely used in polarized skylight navigation to describe skylight polarization patterns, does not contain three-dimensional (3D) attitude information [1]. However, it is still necessary to further explore whether the skylight polarization patterns contain 3D attitude information. So, in this paper, a social spider optimization (SSO) method is proposed to estimate three Euler angles, which considers the difference of each pixel among polarization images based on template matching (TM) to make full use of the captured polarization information. In addition, to explore this problem, we not only use angle of polarization (AOP) and degree of polarization (DOP) information, but also the light intensity (LI) information. So, a sky model is established, which combines Berry model and Hosek model to fully describe AOP, DOP, and LI information in the sky, and considers the influence of four neutral points, ground albedo, atmospheric turbidity, and wavelength. The results of simulation show that the SSO algorithm can estimate 3D attitude and the established sky model contains 3D attitude information. However, when there are measurement noise or model error, the accuracy of 3D attitude estimation drops significantly. Especially in field experiment, it is very difficult to estimate 3D attitude. Finally, the results are discussed in detail.

Search-Based Online Trajectory Planning for Car-like Robots in Highly Dynamic Environments

This paper presents a search-based partial motion planner to generate dynamically feasible trajectories for car-like robots in highly dynamic environments. The planner searches for smooth, safe, and near-time-optimal trajectories by exploring a state graph built on motion primitives, which are generated by discretizing the time dimension and the control space. To enable fast online planning, we first propose an efficient path searching algorithm based on the aggregation and pruning of motion primitives. We then propose a fast collision checking algorithm that takes into account the motions of moving obstacles. The algorithm linearizes relative motions between the robot and obstacles and then checks collisions by comparing a point-line distance. Benefiting from the fast searching and collision checking algorithms, the planner can effectively and safely explore the state-time space to generate near-time-optimal solutions. The results through extensive experiments show that the proposed method can generate feasible trajectories within milliseconds while maintaining a higher success rate than up-to-date methods, which significantly demonstrates its advantages.

Influence of sensor tilts on bio-inspired polarized skylight orientation determination

Inspired by many insects, several polarized skylight orientation determination approaches have been proposed. However, almost all of these approaches always require polarization sensor pointing to the zenith of the sky dome. So, the influence of sensor tilts (not point to the sky zenith) on bio-inspired polarization orientation determination needs to be analyzed urgently. Aiming at this problem, a polarization compass simulation system is designed based upon solar position model, Rayleigh sky model, and hypothetical polarization imager. Then, the error characteristics of four typical orientation determination approaches are investigated in detail under only pitch tilt condition, only roll tilt condition, pitch and roll tilts condition respectively. Finally, simulation and field experiments all show that the orientation errors of four typical approaches are highly consistent when they are subjected to tilt interference, in addition, the errors are affected by not only the degree of inclination, but also the solar altitude angle and the relative position between the Sun and polarization sensor. The results of this paper can be used to estimate the orientation determination error caused by sensor tilts and correct this kind of error.

Online State-Time Trajectory Planning Using Timed-ESDF in Highly Dynamic Environments

Online state-time trajectory planning in highly dynamic environments remains an unsolved problem due to the unpredictable motions of moving obstacles and the curse of dimensionality from the state-time space. Existing state-time planners are typically implemented based on randomized sampling approaches or path searching on discretized state graph. The smoothness, path clearance, and planning efficiency of these planners are usually not satisfying. In this work, we propose a gradient-based planner over the state-time space for online trajectory generation in highly dynamic environments. To enable the gradient-based optimization, we propose a Timed-ESDT that supports distance and gradient queries with state-time keys. Based on the Timed-ESDT, we also define a smooth prior and an obstacle likelihood function that is compatible with the state-time space. The trajectory planning is then formulated to a MAP problem and solved by an efficient numerical optimizer. Moreover, to improve the optimality of the planner, we also define a state-time graph and then conduct path searching on it to find a better initialization for the optimizer. By integrating the graph searching, the planning quality is significantly improved. Experiment results on simulated and benchmark datasets show that our planner can outperform the state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating its significant advantages over the traditional ones.

Affine Dependence of Network Controllability/Observability on Its Subsystem Parameters and Connections

This paper investigates observability/controllability of a networked dynamic system (NDS) in which system matrices of its subsystems are expressed through linear fractional transformations (LFT). Some relations have been obtained between this NDS and descriptor systems about their observability/controllability. A necessary and sufficient condition is established with the associated matrices depending affinely on subsystem parameters/connections. An attractive property of this condition is that all the required calculations are performed independently on each individual subsystem. Except well-posedness, not any other conditions are asked for subsystem parameters/connections. This is in sharp contrast to recent results on structural observability/controllability which is proven to be NP hard. Some characteristics are established for a subsystem which are helpful in constructing an observable/controllable NDS. It has been made clear that subsystems with an input matrix of full column rank are helpful in constructing an observable NDS, while subsystems with an output matrix of full row rank are helpful in constructing a controllable NDS. These results are extended to an NDS with descriptor form subsystems. As a byproduct, the full normal rank condition of previous works on network observability/controllability has been completely removed. On the other hand, satisfaction of this condition is shown to be appreciative in building an observable/controllability NDS.

Optically Probing Tunable Band Topology in Atomic Monolayers

In many atomically thin materials their optical absorption is dominated by excitonic transitions. It was recently found that optical selection rules in these materials are influenced by the band topology near the valleys. We propose that gate-controlled band ordering in a single atomic monolayer, through changes in the valley winding number and excitonic transitions, can be probed in helicity-resolved absorption and photoluminescence. This predicted tunable band topology is confirmed by combining an effective Hamiltonian and a Bethe-Salpeter equation for an accurate description of excitons, with first-principles calculations suggesting its realization in Sb-based monolayers.

Regularity/Controllability/Observability of an NDS with Descriptor Form Subsystems and Generalized LFTs

This paper investigates regularity, controllability and observability for a networked dynamic system (NDS) with its subsystems being described in a descriptor form and system matrices of each subsystem being represented by a generalized linear fractional transformation (GLFT) of its parameters. Except a well-posedness condition, no any other constraints are put on either parameters or connections of a subsystem. Based on the Kronecker canonical form (KCF) of a matrix pencil, some matrix rank based necessary and sufficient conditions are established respectively for the regularity and complete controllability/observability of the NDS, in which the associated matrix depends affinely on both subsystem parameters and subsystem connections. These conditions keep the property that all the involved numerical computations are performed on each subsystem independently, which is attractive in the analysis and synthesis of a large scale NDS. Moreover, some explicit and easily checkable requirements are derived for subsystem dynamics/parameters with which a completely controllable/observable NDS can be constructed more easily.
